I love this game! A couple years back, I looked up a "most underrated NES games" list, and this game was #1. Thankfully, not that expensive, either! So, I got a physical copy for my NES a couple years back, swapped the save battery, played it all the way through, and loved it. I dont mind the sword-swapping. You gotta swap items in menus all the time in Link's Awakening, and that's one of the most beloved Game Boy games of all time.
I own two copies of this game. One CIB and one that was gifted to me. I agree with you on the menu system. The story of Crystalis itself has lived on in Breath of the Wild. I'm glad to meet a fellow Crystalis and Link's Awakening fan.
I really like your review style, and I never knew about the text alteration to the western ending. Yep, can attest to the menu frustration, but as you say, this remains a beloved title!
In all honesty I used to run a crystalis fan site, love this game to death. I own one CIB, one loose and several copies of snk 40th anniversary edition. Thank you for the continued support and sharing your personal experience with this gem.
