  • 1973 Honda CR250M Elsinore - It's mechanically sound, but not aesthetically pleasing. I'm about to start the restoration process, and will post some new videos as that proceeds.

The bike is in need of cosmetic restoration, but I love the styling of the early Hondas. It's not ugly to me, just needing some refreshing. Thanks for looking!

My dad had a Honda dealership back in the 70's. We took a CR250 and a CR125 to the Widowmaker Hillclimbs in Utah in 1973 to demo them. Both of these bikes were beasts! They were state of the art machines and nothing came close to touching them at the time. Brave man starting that thing in sandals. It must have low compression otherwise you never would have attempted it. The 250 we had at Widowmaker broke a few ankles from people attempting to start them with just a pair of sneakers or cowboy boots. The compression and the kickback was wicked! Thank you for sharing your video and good luck on your restoration. You are truly lucky to have this amazing piece of dirt bike history.

@@brentroussin6777 Honda hype? Can you name another bike that was even close to the Elsinore's? Yamaha didn't come out with the YZ til late 1974 and Suzuki RM's didn't drop til 1975. Honda's were way ahead of the game by then!
What were you riding then? A Hodaka?

One other thing-- At least when it was new, this bike set a standard of comparison for fantastic, short-throw positive shifting (no false neutrals). My '09 BMW F800GS is quite good, but I don't think there has ever been a bike made that had better "snick it into gear" shift action than Honda's CR250M.

I was lucky enough to grow up during this period, at the time we all rode Yamaha,Bultaco,Husk's and so on. When our local Honda dealer got their first CR250 in "73" they invited everyone down to the local Dirt Track to ride it unfortunately I was only 14 and my mom would not sign a waiver to ride it so I was left to watch. 12 or so older more experience riders took to the track, and what you have to understand is we had what we thought were pretty good bikes back then but this Honda was a Beast only one rider managed to stay on the bike I got the CR125 when it came in along with everybody else in town I think they were around $600 maybe a little lower the 70' were great times to ride Dirt Bikes.

It is truly a Jekyll and Hyde bike! When it comes on pipe, it would pull the front wheel in just about any gear. I pine for the days when we had real bikes like these. Glad you got to experience these first hand. And thanks for watching! Don't forget to check out the other videos on my channel, and subscribe if you like what you see. Sean

Actually, the air box is there, but the tube that connects the filter to the inlet of the carb was off in this video. I've got it, and it's in place when riding.

I haven't done anything in quite some time. Between work and other projects (1952 Chevrolet), the Elsinore has been put on the back burner. But, at some point it will get some more love!

these bikes are rare! good luck finding the original tank, because it looked like it had a dent there, but it looks all original. if this thing is all stock, it will fetch tens of thousands after resto.

I bought one brand new in 1973 (CR250M). I thought it was beautiful. Shoulda' held out for the street legal wide-ratio transmission version, but I had to have the latest and greatest immediately. The MX version was not a very good play bike-- too peaky powerband. Scared the shit outa me with that 35hp!

DONT TREAD ON ME !!! Agreed! Most of the time it was a royal pain to kick start, just for some reason it was being cooperative then. CR500s take an act of God to kick over, and some were left side kickers!

@@AutoAnatomy LOL I had a 83 cr 480 too ,left side kickstart. I never had any problems kickstarting either and when I raced as a expert/pro I was only 5'4" 135 lbs ! When you kickstart a bigbore twostroke you kick them WITH AUTHORITY lol .learned a very Valuable lesson one day when I attempted to kickstart my 83 480 while wearing my old chuck taylors because I was too much of a hurry to start it without my motocross boot on ! When I kicked it over after 3 or 4 attempts the stroke went all the way through and the kickstart lever mashed my left foot in between the lever and the footpeg instantly breaking my left foot halfway through my first expert A class season 😫 my season was DONE !!! Wasnt funny back then 🤬😁
