A man in Japan has done what French gourmets thought was impossible.Toshihide Takase, 76, has spent half his life figuring out how to farm a particular species of snails. The species, which is used to make the French delicacy Burgundy escargot, is at risk of extinction and is particularly hard to breed. Can Takase’s home-bred snails rival the taste of snails foraged in the wild?

The guy’s research and progress started at a snail’s pace but eventually blazed a trail.
At that's how the movie Turbo was born.
😂
@@EdibleDiarrhoea--... but eventually caused diarrhoea.
Well said
Lol, well done
We can conclude, He snails it
Yea snailed it 🐌 😏
Yeah ! Snailed it 😄
i dont get it
Another great example of perseverance, which is one of the virtues behind Japan's success.
Too bad the French cannot overlook the colab with Japanese. Pretty funny considering the wine industry
Next project for this guy: Growing French chefs right in Japan.
😆
Small advice, the music is too loud to hear over this man; great documentary as always, SCMP.
maybe try to lower down the music volume a bit, or not using it at all. its annoying
👍
He's happy snails are happy music is celebrating their happiness
If ya don't like it then shooooo shooo
@@Ame_no-seireiI loved the cute happy music choice made for this video but anyone here that is listening to the video by ear will definitely tell you that the volume was just too much, no need to be rude
Seriously, did Christopher Nolan direct this video?
RIP to those listening on headphones
The dedication and perseverance are incredibly impressive. One guy's dream can change an industry.
He's a man of focus, commitment, and sheer will
Slow and sure wins the snail race! :)
I THINK THE BACKGROUND MUSIC IS TOO LOW, CAN YOU TURN IT UP A BIT LOUDER?
As a French guy, this man is awesome.
I’m grateful for his efforts in favor of quality snails
a south china youtube chanel making content of a japanese that spends years to perfectly cultivate french food. this is the essence of internet
They cover stories all throughout Asia. It's why I'm subbed to them. 😁
in english!
In english too
truly the real mr. worldwide
This is very cool. I hope farmers in France can learn from him. No telling what the climate change will do to the snail population.
His slow and steady perseverance eventually helped him win the breeding race
I tried it, tastes like linguine pasta with the texture of an oyster
Go relentlessly in pursuit of your dreams and nothing is impossible.. I repeat nothing is impossible ! Whatever you do sky is the limit for a relentless mind.
There are people very successfully farming Helix Pomata in Europe. As child my grandmother once in a while send me out to forage a bucket full. She fed them a few days on milk. Afterwards they found their doom in a delicious soup or brazed in their shells with garlic butter. Nowadays it is forbidden to forage them in our area. We children played with the snails setting them on top of a wooden fence in one large line or using them for snail races. There were lots of them in our garden.
lol that Maplestory snail picture on the walls at 2.54 hahaha!
lol thats not the maplestory version
@@studyou1016
AHHH I LOVE maplestory. I'm so happy any time someone mentions it.
GAMBARE OJI SAN!!!!! I hope some Japanese restaurant in France will take a chance to introduce Takase-san's special white snails to French people! (Or even a french restaurant)! That would be so cool.
snail sushi, let's try it
@@lars-akechesburg9911 Maybe not that far. Haha!
Those snails look very nice and clean.
Hey there, french guy living in Burgundy here.
Used to play with those snails in the backyard as a kid, never expected they were considered a delicacy!
The only thing he knew was he wanted to do it, everything else he had to learn even though everyone kept rejecting his efforts and today he teaches the world....
What an amazing life to have lived.
In case anyone wants to know more:
Snail featured: burgundy snail
Farmer: Toshihide Takase, Age 76
Salute this Senpai's pure dedication and determination 🤩
The Japanese did it again! Amazing.
The snails in this video are very cute.
There's always craftsmen like this who will spend most of their life on a single thing that a generalist like me can't even begin to fathom but can only give respect.
Respect for this Man for spending most of his life doing this! truly amazing!
I am breeding 25,000 crickets in my room but I would never ever eat one.
me with dermestid beetles😂
I’ve eaten dried super worms, not bad,I did try a fresh one once, very woody flavor.
Japan has perfected what French cannot do
I salute your dedication and hardwork!! I wish you all the best.
background music is annoyingly loud, gosh!
That's the best part of it! They're just as annoying as the comments.
I didn’t know that snails can be edible when I’ve seen this - sooo yummy 💜
im impressed by his perseverance
R.I.P turbo
your video was a brilliant blend of information and creativity!

Legendary monster rancher!
Please make an isekai anime of this guy reincarnated as an overpowered snail
Why does the title and thumbnail feel like one of those movie recap videos lol
Of all things to build international relations, I did not expect it to be snails
The song a little bit slow.. i still can hear the conversation
He discovered the secret to immortality and is not taking any chances
I haven't tried land snail before but water snail i did. If you're not a big fan of cartilage from any animal like pig and cow. It won't be your taste due to the fact that it is rubbery like kind of textures. For thr land snail... I had no idea what kind of textures it would be.
I love escargot
I have to imagine his product will be more consistent than the wild harvested snails.
But the real question is how and where did he get the funding from? Savings? I mean for forty years working in the project!
He was the president of a factory that made steel frames for buildings.
Escargot: Remake 🐌
The wagyu Snail
Background music is too loud
I like it actually.
I remember eating one from Safeway in the late 80's or early 90's. They had it in deli section. They don't sell that there anymore.
Mad man with a can of salt breaks in one of these days
well it finally paid off! ❤❤
it took him seven years to get authorized before he started alkshshs
Japanese are on another level
This concludes that snails in his farm have 2 - 3 years to enjoy life before they are cooked.
4 months --watch it again
Escargot barbeque is delicious, indeed.
tasty? nope. that is the harsh reality. A squid or octopus tastes way better and it is cheaper
taste, like humour, is subjective.
It is up to French customers to decided whether Takeshi's carefully nurtured snails as delicious as those from the wild. 😑
No! Not Gary!
Man spent 40 years on this meanwhile people making fun of the french people all these time because they are snail eaters 😂
Only a Japanesse can andestand!❤
The snails look so cute
GENIUS!!!!!!!
I'll eat them all!!!!!
lol
And here in my country those snails are considered pest and no one wants to eat them
Well, Dang----Now we need a follow up to see if the French would prefer these over their home grown ones in a blind taste test. Seriously though? A blind taste test over two variety of snails. :D Which is the better tasting snail? I have had them a few times and each time it just tasted like whatever it was bathing in.
I wonder how he transports snail samples to France. Are they carry-on luggage? Or are they treated escargot?
Saizeriya secrets revealed
Japanese artisanry is always the best
Three years for a bite size piece of protein?!?! 🐌
BGM too loud..
All things considered, this is the most japanese thing for a French dish that the French wouldn't even care all that much for
Imagine spent 40 years just to eat a snail one day
Music too loud...
Snails taste great, but they're too disgusting and scary to handle with bare hands
why the loud music
I'm sure those snail would be more delicious freshly made than frozen storebought. I tried once which is those storebought it wasnt great safe to say xD
Great vid. Btw, Ive never tried this dish.
He should have done snail caviar along with his current operation
Wagyu 🐌?
didnt finish watching cause music was so loud and annoying
Ants Canada? That you?
Snails sashimi
The music ruin it...
Don't let them get out! We discovered in California that they can be a terrible invasive species!
different species
Chinese already covering it
Junji ito story material 😊
Tune down the mf music
how about as an experiment try to release 10% of the snails in the forest let's see what would be the outcome.
When I visited Paris, I discovered too they were very smelly and all BLACK ewh
Takes 2 to 3 years to grow to a mature size and gone in 1 minute..... 😐
Based snail man
Is AntsCanada voicing over this one?
In Japan each and every thing takes years
A typical Japanese otaku
The music is irritating me. Please stop lol
