Saw this quote on instagram a while a go and it stuck with me. "Before you go trying to change other people, remember how hard it is to change yourself."
Why does JP put out all the complex nuances to the general public? Because you know that it is important for people to learn “how” to think as opposed to “what” to think. There is a stark difference!!
I think these breakdowns are really what set your channel apart from others, other creators have tried to copy you, but no one really pulls it off like you guys do. @masculine man Dont kid yourself. Everyone copies everyone, including 'Charisma On command'. Its normal though, i wouldnt even use the word 'Copying' rather 're-packaging', such as C on C has just done with Petersons lectures and youtube material.
I think Ned Stark's head might take a bit of issue with the whole "telling the truth inevitably leads to good" axiom... Sometimes, especially in the face of great corruption or tyranny, clandestine operations are the only way to effect positive change.. that's why we have spies.

@Channel34 Good question! It's hard to say because I don't think she was even aware of it, but I think it had something to do with our "on again, off again" status. If your friend is making a mistake, then tell him, but be sure the "help" is motivated by genuine concern and not just bullying. ;)

dude, try writing some poetry if you want to make shadows appear! my own ideas came in by the boatload, but because i started with being inspired by things perceived to be of the light, i came to see that, if i just write, about this darkness over here, within me, then i can get to know it, and it sounded scary at first but, art in this form, will show you what you really think of youeself., it will help you get past your perceptions of your supeficial self but, you have to be aware though, that art invites criticism by its very nature.... no more words on this, you figure it out!
@@Vertutame Yeah.... there is a danger of being possessed by the idea of truth... Of course, you can be a moron and crave having the truth or being right, but then you can be more sophisticated about it and while knowing that you can never "be right", you can still be identified and possessed by getting things right and center all your life around it, which is probably motivated by fear of being wrong (thats the shadow part here) and that can prevent you from acting and its also pretty tough on your relationships, especially if youre smart.
@@DarkHound9999 I struggle with the "telling the truth" idea, as you don't really know the truth... what you have is an understanding of what you percive as reallity, which is limited by your knowledge and experience and intelligence, and your truth may not be the real truth. I find relief in saying "from my point of view, what I see is" and then describe my truth. This way I start a discussion, share ideas about what I know, and become more receptive to feedback I may not know. We all live in our own perseption of the world, our own delusion
@@DarkHound9999 if I need to be honest, the truth can be good or bad, if we put in context, truths that are dangerous and would cause incredible danger to society as a whole, should be kept, there are some moments when truths may benefit everyone but there will be moments where the truth is best kept hidden like an information hazard.

@ That is, in my opinion, a disgusting perversion of the parent-child relationship. An extreme failure as a parent. Everyday I struggle to learn how to be a better mom and support my husband in becoming a better father. I will make a lot of mistakes on this journey. But what I won't do is sacrifice my children on the altar of convenience. But, I believe in God. I believe that children are the most amazing, wonderful gift any person could receive. I believe that God intended for parents to guide, protect and cultivate the hearts and souls of their children. And I believe we will have to answer for how we executed that mission.
Love it. We had a guy at work , 2 levels of management above me, strong arming a bunch of people around. JP inspired me to speak the truth with confidence. I escalated all the way up to the CEO. Once I did that , lots of people followed whom he had been bossing around. He ended up getting fired and the company is so much the better. And I'm on a first name basis with senior management now. He's so right that saying the truth - in the right way at the right time - eventually will have the best outcome.
Absolute honesty is like absolute pacifism - it's a beautiful ideal but impractical. Just as if the USA had unilaterally disarmed it would have been invaded by the USSR, telling the truth in all situations will make life hard for you.

The problem with the way this claim is made, whether it is by Peterson or by other ultra-conservatives, is that it's always strongly tied to the subjective opinions of the person making it. "Tidy your room" might seem like an acceptable standard, ethically benign and good advice. Yet appearances are often deceiving. The way it is used to imply that a person's ability to impose order on his surroundings is directly tied to his worth and intelligence is a standard that is not only ethically bankrupt, but also divorced from reality. Even putting aside the numerous studies that suggest a correlation between a chaotic mind and intellectual potential, simply by looking at the examples of history anyone would realize that this standard would lead a society to dismiss Einstein (which the fascist Nazi regime that valued obedience and absolute order did, losing one of their most valuable assets), Isaac Newton (arguably the greatest mind in recorded history) and many more other great artists, scientists and even politicians. Again I have to stress that this is not really about whether we should judge someone by his willingness to tidy his personal space, but about the dangers of idealizing order and structure to the point that one places it above the ideals of liberty and justice, something that I have regularly observed Peterson doing. Behind his neo-conservative rhetoric there is a darker shade of the colors he sports. He often references freedom of speech and yet his rhetoric routinely strays to denunciation of attempts to change society be means of conversation and a great willingness to dismiss people rather than their opinions. Another point one will notice on closer inspection is that he overuses "arguments from authority", or arguments that do not mainly rely on logical consistency but rather the arbitration of a particular individual or institution. Not to say that he does not have a certain mastery of logical arguments, but rather, that he seems to, perhaps without full awareness, dispense with that critical pattern of thought when asserting certain values (e.g. every single damn time he uses the term "traditional"). All these points combine to the rather chilling suggestion, that beyond conservationism, the ideals he champions are deeply authoritarian. That is not to say that he is necessarily unintelligent, or incapable, or that all his suggestions are invalid. The real problem is that besides these qualities his dogmatic point of view and attachment to the ideas he has been raised with seem to undermine those values and drive him to a severely harmful political movement. [Based on his opinions on child rearing and his references to his family and early life; he probably had a strict childhood that effectively indoctrinated him into his core ideas, those being religious, political and even rational.]
At this point I would like to add that the idea of people not deserving to voice political concerns until they conform with a societal norm is founded on the base ideology of fascism, particularly that of the '30's and Hirohito Japan.
I'm a Jordan Peterson fan. He's really made a difference globally on so many people. And then on your channel you take so many complex and confusing aspects on an everyday's life for everyone, but you get to the very essence. Simple and concrete, as shown on this video. Dude. I love this here. "Embrace your own shadow." It's so true, I have some of the exact same personality traits that I abhor in others who are close to me. 😥
In my early adulthood I made it a conscious point to practise this: _do not emulate the undesirable actions/behaviours of other people_ So, much of my accumulated wisdom today is not so much about what's the correct thing to do, but recognising the observed mistakes I should not be doing. To put it as another phrase, "Those who do not remember and learn from history are doomed to repeat it." The result is I've forged relationships and reputation that hardly makes me appear like an enemy to others. Based on the feedback people give me, I can sincerely believe this is a direction I can continue ahead.
I find it funny how JP went into the public sphere of debate looking to be as impartial and brutally honest as possible....and now finds it extremely hard to not be brandished a "right wing bigot nazi!!!!!". He is the epitome of the notion "an uncomfortable truth is better than a comfortable lie". He speaks of holding yourself accountable for your actions, putting in a good work ethic, holding yourself to the same standards you preach at others online, and the value of freedom of expression and speech and will not yield to government mandated speak. Extremely tame views that most people would consider reasonable...yet still gets character assassinated as a "Nazi". It speaks volumes how scared of personal responsibility those people are more than Jordan Peterson could have ever put into words.
He only became famous cause he saw this right wing wave and profited from it. Aligning his views with the Right Wing, and trying to make himself look like a huge intellectual, when theres just no content. I cringe every time im forced to listen to JP

I don’t think, that professor Peterson using abstract language makes him incomprehensible, even better, I think it makes him precise in speech, which I believe to be quite valuable and helpful, when you’re discussing something with a person who doesn’t agree with you.
Piotr Żwirowski How does spewing word salad make someone more precise in speech? This guy can give great lectures but when he's put in a debate setting he just becomes Christian Deepak Choprah.
That is being precise, not being easy to comprehend, but being professional and precise. Tell me what could be misinterpreted in this statement: “The state’s proper functioning is dependant on the proper functioning of the individual” And what could be misinterpreted in this statement: “A person is more important than the country”
In that case yes, watch his talk with Dillahunty though and you'll have to admit that he is just spinning around questions by being vague instead of precise.
After the first 10 pages of his book, that by the way almost exclusively deal with lobsters, i had to rethink my stance on the policy of Otto von Bismark.
6:38 This is why your channel is so good and you provide so much value to us. You don't expect us to just take everything you say at face value, you want us to consider everything ourselves and through experience. You truly want us to be our best.

“People hate most about others what they subconsciously hate about themselves” The part about our shadow selves is really interesting. Definitely makes one much more self aware. The upcoming video game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, is gonna be about Lara Croft struggling with her dark side and choices. I wonder if the devs and creators chose the title for that psychological reason? 🤔
I really like the term: the shadow. Anger is a very healthy emotion in regard to protecting your positive energy (so to speak). The first few seconds of anger is alignment (satisfaction), beyond that anger is an expression of powerlessness.
One of the hardest things is learning how to tell the truth tactfully, constructivly and with emotional restraint. Nobody ever taught me how to do that. I was only taught how to be polite, how to blend in and not stir the pot. I think there is way too much emphasis on politeness and being “nice” these days and not enough on actually standing up for your beliefs or telling it how it is. I grew up believing that being nice was a key priority in life, only to realise that it’s basically useless for any real purpose and one is much better off being a little bit arrogant, disagreeable and selfish in the right measure and at the right time. Because once people figure out that you won’t bite back, they will just trample you for their own benefit until there’s nothing left of you.
As a young adult, I was in that place of keeping my mouth shut. It was a constant struggle attempting to be polite but knowing I was weak. Finally, I got it through my head that "diplomatically" telling the truth turned out better than not saying anything. Eventually, people took my newfound assertiveness as "strong-willed." Guess what? I never lost any sleep over stating the facts.
I tell the truth about how I think and feel to people all the time. It's really hard, especially when it is telling the truth about your opinion on things to a friend that disagrees with you. I lost one friend and gained another. I realized how manipulative, vulnerable and how much of a big two faced liar the friend that I lost is. But the friend that stayed with me even after realizing that we don't always agree taught me how to look at the world more positively and how important being open to new ideas is. I am very grateful to JP for opening my eyes on the importance of truth and I really wish more people would learn from him to.
@@OfftoShambala not mine either... Sadly I learned you don't need to always tell the truth only after my 30's. Best rules for living with honour. However, I also believe that sometimes, by letting the truth unfold on its own you preserve your integrity & trustworthiness.
The good thing about Peterson is that he is so complicated in his speech that it can be hard to follow which leads to you to having to think so it makes sense. He’s making you think, and he’s not telling you how to think because you have to figure it out on your own. I just think it’s great tbh

Hey Charlie, do you consider putting some of the vidoes' audio to Spotify? I'd like to listen them on the road but UA-cam isn't the best option sometimes :)
If you opt to go to podcast you'll want to pay attention to how much of your content is 'audio' or 'audio/visual' based. I mention this as the main time I listen to my podcasts is either when I'm driving or cooking; both of which my eyes and hands are doing something other than looking at my phone. Not a deal breaker by any means; just something to keep in mind on how people will consume the content.
There are very few times when telling the truth actually isn't a good idea at all. I told my very enthusiastic and talented teacher that I hadn't read any home work at all during the semester but I really liked his lectures and they taught me much. I still remember the sad face he gave me as I told him this. At this point I still thought that telling the truth no matter what was the best idea. But these news never helped him, it just made a very good teacher very sad. I didn't even start reading my home work because I hate reading, but I learnt that sometimes saying nothing is just better than saying the truth. By far, most cases will benefit from it but it's important to know when you're facing the exception like this. You could say that telling the truth would have forced me to read, but it didn't. Instead I just saw the importance of strategic silence, which is nice too, except it made me more deceitful than I already was.
Telling the truth can have short term conflict, but long term positivity. When my friend let me know that my behavior wasn't attractive it made me a little sad at first, but I worked on it. She could have never told me that being that nice was a turn off, but I would have never learned. One of my first girl friends corrected the way I kissed. That was an unpleasant thing to hear, however it made me improve and it made a very positive impact in the long run for my intimate relationships. My doctor let me know when I was getting fat, he didn't put it nicely he was blunt which helped hit it home. I am very thankful he was because I might have let it go to far, but instead it let me stop bad habits early instead of getting fat enough clothes stopped fitting. Hell, the guy at work letting my know my hair looked bad made me change my style and it got a lot of compliments. They weren't being mean, they were being honest. It helps people reflect when you're honest, but don't be honest to your detriment. If a girl likes you she doesn't need to know all your bad traits, stay positive when you a potential mate it affects your chances. Don't lie about liking things you don't though you can't fake it forever
Doing and saying the things that pop into my mind is the exact thing i have been struggling to dial back on. It gets me into so much trouble, especially nowadays when everyone is on edge
Hahaha telling the truth is different than having no filter, but I feel you on that. Sometimes it’s better to wait until a different moment to tell the truth, or to figure out how to say it the best way. It’s important to do it, but it’s important to get timing and delivery as good as you can too -not just blurt things out all the time. Lol
I actually really believe in this. Plenty of times my wife said "We shouldn't be together since we are so different" and I answered "What would be the point if we were the same? The benefit of a relationship is Learning with the other person, and that is why being different is better, since we balance our weaknesses with the other's strenghts"
The world is full of balance. We are naturally drawn to it. A partner with similar characteristics as yourself would create an imbalance. At the same time, if you meet someone who you hate because you recognise yourself in their behaviour it is time to reflect. It is God's way to make you more self-aware.
This was such a exceptionally great video from you, great job!! The research, arguments, and emphases were so on point. There is a lot of life value in this video, I'll definitely be watching this again occasionally.
1. the idea being conveyed is that changing your environment (clear your room) is often the first step in changing yourself. that then allows you to build self-esteem so you can go out and change a larger environment. start small and ratchet up, but it's always a dual-dynamic, Environment/Organism interaction: my environment affects me affecting my environment, which affects me etc. There's nothing special about starting with yourself. It's more about starting small. 2. this train of thought can lead people to total egoism; a selfishness that puts the focus on your own individuality rather than the way we interact and create a community. using the "i'm starting with the man in the mirror" analogy, you dont have to stay in front of the mirror until you're perfect before you go out and try and help the world. if we were to think like that, we'd create a world of narcissists, staring at our own reflections, trying to make adjustments, waiting for perfection while the world burns (kind of what is already happening). Even if we were to "perfect ourselves" first, it may have been so long since our initial struggle we may not be able to relate to it any more, making us worse at helping others. this is a common problem for professors teaching undergrad classes; it's been so long they don't understand how anyone could be struggling with such simple ABC level stuff, making them, in that scenario, poor educators. alternatively, it's often "broken" people who can help each other the best, because they relate the most, like the comments sections of self-help videos, or in other similar forums, such as support groups.
Sycsa, “Since you obviously want to improve your English.” is not a grammatically correct sentence. Sword. Live. Die. (Also, “practise” is an acceptable verb form in British English.)
I found that trying to be truthful does not work in your favour with narcissistic people, but against you during my life, but I have noticed that people who do know me are trusting me more. I would argue that narcissists do work on chipping away at your self esteem, and it is hard to defend yourself when attacked.
The only way to deal with a narcissist is to go away from them. Long term. Even professionals say that. They don’t want help or to change, so take care of yourself.
This may sound bloody crazy but every Jordan Peterson thumbnail title on UA-cam gets under my skin some way but every time I click on a video i just love it! And instantly hit like. I’m not sure why this has been but thank you for all these videos Jordan and friends!
Most of the time, it is us that need changing, the other part is society that needs to change, imagine telling Galileo: "Everyone is right and you are wrong, you need to change yourself." and he actually did it. Society needs changing. Since we are part of it, changing ourselves it's changing society by default, so saying "It's not me, it's them." it's completely valid but only if we did what we must with ourselves.

@@tartanhandbag You'll have to elaborate on that.
@@tyskbulle not to knock your MJ quote here, this is more for the "you can't help others until you've helped yourself" crowd, which i appreciate isn't directly implied by starting with the man in the mirror. my point is that this train of thought can lead people to total egoism; a selfishness that puts the focus on your own individuality rather than the way we interact and create a community. in a sentence what i mean is, *"dont feel like you have to stay in front of the mirror until you're perfect before you go out and try and help the world"*, because if we do that, we'll create a world of narcissists, staring at our own reflections waiting for perfection while the world burns.
X4rrr You emphasize the importance of community and brotherhood more than most. Some have been put off from that idea because they try to help others but it backfires

I appreciate this channel so much!
People thought you were confrontational because you were speaking the truth?
"Fix yourself before you fix the world." - extremely true. You need to be selfish first in order to become selfLESS
Wrong. You need to be humble to become selfless.
Fixing yourself before fixing world isn't selfish. If you wouldn't do it that way, you would just be hypocrite...
What he meant is that you should look out for yourself first, so you're in a position to look out for others, like trying to get on stable ground first before you pull someone else up. If you don't, you'll just pull yourself down.
We need Dr House video.

"If you want to upset someone tell them a lie. If you want to infuriate someone tell them the truth."
In my early adulthood I made it a conscious point to practise this: _do not emulate the undesirable actions/behaviours of other people_
So, much of my accumulated wisdom today is not so much about what's the correct thing to do, but recognising the observed mistakes I should not be doing. To put it as another phrase, "Those who do not remember and learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
The result is I've forged relationships and reputation that hardly makes me appear like an enemy to others. Based on the feedback people give me, I can sincerely believe this is a direction I can continue ahead.

Tell me what could be misinterpreted in this statement:
“The state’s proper functioning is dependant on the proper functioning of the individual”
And what could be misinterpreted in this statement:
“A person is more important than the country”
They could mean the same, but they could mean two very different things, depending on the interpretation of the second
In that case yes, watch his talk with Dillahunty though and you'll have to admit that he is just spinning around questions by being vague instead of precise.

We teach people how to treat us!
Telling the truth results in the best possible scenario even in the most difficult situation -- amazing truth!
That has not been my experience at all.
@@OfftoShambala not mine either... Sadly I learned you don't need to always tell the truth only after my 30's. If lies only hurt yourself and give you feeling of guilt, but the truth can hurt other people around you - you may think of accepting the sacrifice and hold your truth for yourself for the rest of your life...
Telling the truth to family that ignores their shadow is the worse.
I may not agree with many of Jordan Petersons politics however I recognize how intelligent he is. He has amazing philosophies and is a great debater
I have a summons I’ve been putting off for a long time. I am going to take care of that this weekend if the count allows. You inspired me to take care of this problem because it’s really been giving me great stress. It’s going to feel good taking on this challenge and getting it out of the way.
Good luck Alec. Hang in there. Taking responsibility for your self is a great thing. This could be an opportunity for change.
Alex Smith I sincerely appreciate that! I have a feeling it will be the start to something massive for me.

@@ad84_71 yep...its wisdom that we seek. I guess people will only hear the truths from whoever said it recently.

I have been living this way now. I didn't start that way. But I had to change a lot about myself just so I can be happy with just me. My marriage ended because of me not telling my true feelings. But by doing so made everyone much happier.
Best rules for living with honour. However, I also believe that sometimes, by letting the truth unfold on its own you preserve your integrity & trustworthiness.
I want to thank you guys so much for the effort you put into those videos! It‘s a joy to see your content inspiring people to improve themselves.
~ Our pleasure! Glad you're liking the videos. :-)
Thank you this video made me clean my room

Jordan Peterson's voice sounds like an older Morty 😂😂
Longest Dream best. comment. ever.
Execpt with less rasp.
O ly see it because of the gray hair
Basically Rick
I think he sounds like Kermit the frog
Already watched this more than 5x, still and always REFRESHING.
The good thing about Peterson is that he is so complicated in his speech that it can be hard to follow which leads to you to having to think so it makes sense. He’s making you think, and he’s not telling you how to think because you have to figure it out on your own. I just think it’s great tbh
David Goggins- inspiring people like no other - in many ways the actualization of much of what Jordan Peterson says. I don't need to hear about him as I've listened to everything he's said but many in your audience haven't. Talk about David Goggins!
I guess you found out about him on JRE too?
great guy if I remember correctly. Is that the navy seal?
InternetSado blew me away - I was completely mesmerized through the whole podcast - changed my life - lost 15 lbs (6ft now weigh 167), make my bed every morning and hitting my priorities harder than I ever have in my life - so just like half the people who watched Goggins on JRE.
I agree David Goggins would be a great person to make a video on
Jordan B. Peterson
i read it: "Don't be that Peterson"
Czerwona Pigułka Honestly, better video
Sounds like a family friendly tv show
Czerwona Pigułka omg me too, didn't realize until read this comment
Actually some students at UofT would definitely watch that due to some of his actions.
same
Not telling lies sounds like pursue the truth. You do not know where it will lead you but it could set your life free time and time again. That is my life.
You should talk more about self-love. It's one of the things that have helped me the most
I think 4 times a week is a healthy amount of self-love.
+Paul Nope hahahaha
Paul Nope hahaha yes, but i mean making specific videos about it, giving exercises or sth like that
Wrist exercises?
Paul Nope No, pull ups, push ups and stuff
Hey Charlie, do you consider putting some of the vidoes' audio to Spotify? I'd like to listen them on the road but UA-cam isn't the best option sometimes :)
That or a podcast. I'll try to see what the simplest way to port would be :-)
If you opt to go to podcast you'll want to pay attention to how much of your content is 'audio' or 'audio/visual' based. I mention this as the main time I listen to my podcasts is either when I'm driving or cooking; both of which my eyes and hands are doing something other than looking at my phone. Not a deal breaker by any means; just something to keep in mind on how people will consume the content.
with the new UA-cam Premium you'll be able to listen to audio I think
That would be very appreciated
I have this beautiful ant standing on the tip of my thumb looking around . He made it to my other thumb. He's cool
This is my favorite thing I've read all day!
David Big, ants are very cool. Lifting over ten times their own body weight like it’s nothing. They’re pure strength.
What a bro
Lol this random but I love it bugs are cool😂😂😂
Probably a she.
Other Petersonian Truisms:
1) Pay attention.
2) Aim high.
Lol
"The person i hate the most has similar traits to me" Does the person i love the most have opposite traits from me?
I actually really believe in this. Plenty of times my wife said "We shouldn't be together since we are so different" and I answered "What would be the point if we were the same? The benefit of a relationship is Learning with the other person, and that is why being different is better, since we balance our weaknesses with the other's strenghts"
Yin & Yang?
The world is full of balance. We are naturally drawn to it. A partner with similar characteristics as yourself would create an imbalance. At the same time, if you meet someone who you hate because you recognise yourself in their behaviour it is time to reflect. It is God's way to make you more self-aware.

Probably more the case of the most traits you admire. You may not necessarily see those in yourself.
This was such a exceptionally great video from you, great job!! The research, arguments, and emphases were so on point. There is a lot of life value in this video, I'll definitely be watching this again occasionally.
Fixing ourselves first is absolutley right. We must change ourselves first in order to change our surroundings.
1. the idea being conveyed is that changing your environment (clear your room) is often the first step in changing yourself. that then allows you to build self-esteem so you can go out and change a larger environment. start small and ratchet up, but it's always a dual-dynamic, Environment/Organism interaction: my environment affects me affecting my environment, which affects me etc.
I watch JP a lot but this break down really hit me hard.
Woah this was released on my bday last year....
Makes me think about how far I've come since then...
happy incoming bud dei!
Dr. Peterson has saved countless lives.
Great video,
I recommend reading the book, its absolutely tremendous and also great practise of english for the non natives
*It’s, practice, English, non-natives. Since you obviously want to improve your English.
*deep breath
thank you
Cheers, mate!
“How to integrate your shadow?” - I believe, this topic is worth a separate video
“Truth is its own reward”
“Be quick to listen, slow to speak”
“Patience is a virtue”
“The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”
Most of the time, it is us that need changing, the other part is society that needs to change, imagine telling Galileo: "Everyone is right and you are wrong, you need to change yourself." and he actually did it. Society needs changing. Since we are part of it, changing ourselves it's changing society by default, so saying "It's not me, it's them." it's completely valid but only if we did what we must with ourselves.
This video opened my eyes to reality
