Alaska Airlines. They have incredibly awesome policies for flying with your bike. It's always like just $30. I printed out the email from customer service breaking down their policy, laminated, and I keep it in my bike case. I flew with a xl fat bike from New Orleans to SFO for just $30.
I've shipped my bike with USPS after doing 500 miles on the GDMBR (Great Divide). Found a bike box at a LBS and packed it up. They mailed it for about $150. Then I got on a Greyhound to Florida.
The flight bits OK, it's the getting to the airport and airport to trails that's near impossible to find public transport for! Having these issues for my trip to Asheville in 2 wks!
Awesome setup for sure but between the cost of bringing it along and the potential for damage I see traveling as a great opportunity to rent a demo bike and try a bike/brand that I'm interested in. But prepandemic FedEx had a flat rate 40$ charge for shipping bicycles which IMO was a great deal if you're down to take the chance.
As a wise man once told me: « Buy a 600 $ bike travelling bike to reduce a fifth of the bike’s volume. Try to ignore people looking at you like if you are a weirdo/maniac man walking with 3 meters long carrying case. ».

The airlines have absolutely destroyed my regular luggage. Just watch how they load/unload luggage on the flight line and that’s only what you can see. They don’t give a crap. I would never trust them with a $6,000-8,000 bike. I rather just rent a bike at my destination.

I didn't want to deal with the hassle so I just moved to the cycling destination. Best decision I've ever made.
