As a harsh critic of Vanney in the past, I do believe he deserves more credit this year. The way he’s been able to manage player injuries,,suspensions and finding a way to incorporate our bench players to create more depth has been phenomenal. Also, props on the podcast. Love how you guys keep everything on point without unnecessary rambling.
Thanks so much for the feedback and thanks for listening! Agree on Vanney. And the beautiful thing is it looks like the league at large is starting to give him credit as well, as evidenced by his inclusion within the top 5 candidates for MLS Coach of the Year per MLS.
Being able to do all that while also picking up results is the mark of a good coach. Hoping more of the national media starts to give him his props like many of us here on the West Coast. Thanks for watching!
It was a ballsy call to go into such a high-stakes match with only one pivot, given how successful we have been playing with Cerrillo, Delgado and/or Brugman in a double-pivot setup. It worked for most of Saturday night and also when Reus came on against Atlanta, but the double pivot is what got us to the top of the West in the first place. Which system do you think will get us further in the playoffs: single or double pivot?
Double gives us better defensive solidity, but Greg likes the single so we can flood the box with numbers and overload especially that right side - in other words I think he likes attacking with 5 rather than 4. It will also likely depend on the opposition and Greg & the team will adjust in game when they recognize where the spaces are. It'll also be interesting if/how this changes when Julian Aude gets back into the lineup since he's also very attacking.
I feel that with Reus now getting lots of minutes, we're going to see more of this inverted full back role during matches. It just makes sense to take advantage of Yamane's good technical ability and IQ. I think being able to bring in Delgado ( a guy who covers a ton of ground) and Brugman (one of the best ball progressors in the league) off the bench entices Vanney as it allows for him to make in game adjustments for certain scenarios. Cerrillo has the grit to play at the lone six - it's just about making sure he's got passing outlets near him often. Cerrillo still isn't a great ball progressor - the data backs that up
