Never heard Ola playing Deftones before! Please do it often :D
He did a whole cover, right?
Just look for it
@@Sticky_Tea yeah drums , bass , and banjo !
Noooooo
don't
Loved that you showed what the oversized cab sounds like over the Camera mic.
One of the things I love about the H&K Grandmeister 40 is that it has an XLR out with good actual cabinet emulation options AND the ability to turn the emulation off for DI into an interface and/or IR.
I agree that the ability to turn off emulation for DI purposes is an excellent feature which all amps AND pedals should come with as standard.
Lol I think all of us that are guitarist right at 40 learned "my own summer" when it came out. Thanks Ola!!!
I’m always amazed at just how important a good IR is when you’re using emulation software
Dude i fucking wish I was able to get the same sound/tone as Ola, his metal tones are some of my favorites, even if most of the time I just hear him play whilst doing a demo
Man this amp sounds so good !
I think the amp sounds good! I want to get a Peavey 6505, but I'm thinking about the Iconic now, maybe.
I have one. I like it. It gets a lot of crap but out of a Mesa boogie dual rectifier and a Marshall DSL, I play the iconic the most.
0:50 Amp > Cab > Mic > Interface
1:54 Amp > Emulated Out > Interface
2:47 Amp > FX Send > Interface
Line DI out really should have defeatable cab sim or none at all these days.
These Iconics sound great though.
Totally agree. Whenever i see an amp has direct out the first thing i look for is if you can disable any crap IR they have set up. If you can't disable the IR, the direct out is now useless, so good job designers!
@@kylehowdy thanks! Seriously, just use the preamp out for no speaker sim. The point is to have a decent sounding simulator that doesn’t cost a lot like built in IR would. This does give you a live feed in case micing isn’t available or practical.
@@jamesbrown7468 you're totally right! I'll be 100% honest, I wasn't pointing specifically at this amp saying those things. Because like you said the preamp out pretty much does it since I'm sure the overall tone isn't very dependent on power amp saturation. I was just making a blanket statement that having a loaded output without giving the choice to the user always sucks. And, I totally get the cost a built in IR would be, but I would simply just want no IR built in! But maybe I'm a minority. Either way, the amp sounds killer for the cost, and I wouldn't expect those features on a cheaper amp, so well done!
@@kylehowdy you’re not the minority. I feel the exact same way. Like….please just let us bypass that ish
Plugging from the FX send directly to the interface - mind blown!
As long as you can put a load on the power section (or leave that off), you can!
@@markvandergiessen3158 the amp has a power amp mute switch to let you record without a speaker. From either the Speaker sim XLR or the non- simulation effects send or preamp out
@@jamesbrown7468 Yeah he just means in general. We can see in the vid it has a button for that but other amps might not. For example, you might need a load box with a line out instead if your amp doesnt have it. Some amps will even have an internal load that gets switched if you plug a cable into the headphones or line out etc.
Same, I try it on my little amp and just put a real IR what great ! So I'm thinking to have a load box like a captor for example, but I'm not sure if it's necessary with this trick...
I let the switch of the stand by off, but that by pass the power amp... That make de sound kind of weird... So a load box include the power amp.
Any suggestions ?
I tried the 5150 iconic 4x12 cabinet and i cant believe how great it sounds for that price through the 80w iconic head. No idea why people bash it. Mesa sounds great too but im sold.
Ola is the talented Mr. Metal on youtube
Bolt Thrower shirts make everything sound better! \m/
Bootleg Warmaster shirt, looks like.
Seeing that Gibson makes me hope that someday Ola will convert into the Les Paul Custom religion.
Thanks Ola for the FX loop trick :)
I'm not that happy with my direct output either (I was surprised how good it sounds the first time, though) but recording with a microphone is just too loud xD.
However, the FX loop input is a bit uncomfortable when wired to the pedals and interface. but let's see how it sounds :)
BTW: the ENGL Ironball Special Edition has several cabinet simulator seats that can be occupied. Here a test with your IR's might make sense :)
This chanel is more interesting than the regular Ola Englund yt chanel.
SHOVE IT SHOVE IT SHOVE IT
Now that's heavy Ola 💯🤘
thank you this is exacly what i wanted to know about this amp
Same here! Thank you for making this video, Ola.
Uncompromised videos are the best in the universe !
I don’t know why these companies just don’t put in an IR of a 4x12 with an SM57 in it on these DI outputs like if you just showed up at a gig and mic’d up your cab.
I agree with you. There's processing involved with IRs though. They'd have to factor that into the price of the amp. It's definitely much easier to slap a passive filter on an output and approximate a good sound for convenience.
@@RX120D it probably cost about $1 extra to put a tiny chip holding an IR back there.
@@schlagdog i didn't realize miniature chips housing high quality A/D/A converters and a DSP core that can run an IR with low enough latency that it's not noticeable would be so cheap. Surely this chip would only cost about 25c since the development and programming cost to implement would take up the majority of the price of the chip, right?. Why doesn't someone dial up Revv or any other amp builder that has IR features and ask them why their amps are so damn expensive if it's so cheap to build?
Running the Iconic in Mesa 2x12 with TS9Dx in the front and MXR 6 band EQ through the loop and sounds absolutely kick ass with both active or passive pickups. Actually have to back gain down a little for the actives.
@Just J Just like how everyone usually does. Bass just below 3/4s and mids at about 1/4 and then back up to just under 3/4s for treble. Basically looks like a smile.
01:11 OLA becomes for a second a jazz player
Dude that sounded great. On preamp out
Nice, I’m using the iconic and a Fryette fat bottom.
Your cabs sound heavy like a heavy metal sonic bliss!!! 💀
If you go from FX loop out into a cab emulation, you NEED power amp simulation in the chain. It makes a subtle, but necessary difference.
That’s what I’m thinking too
very cool video, i totally enjoy this second channel :)
Cheers from Texas!
🤘😎🤘
Killer amp!
It's on my "some day I will have one"
I'm actually stopping by to say,
Go Swede Curling Team! 😁
Sling those rocks! Yuss!!
Catch you online man
M
very nice sounding !!! It has a peavey 5150 character
great video, still need an Amp simulator after the FX send or Preamp out befor the IR
This video was very helpful! thank you!
The fizzines is gone now, as I expected, it was the iconic cab wich made it sound fizzy.
Ola playing Deftones 👌🏻
When's the Solar A2.7 Cannabalismo reveal video coming out?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, aren't FX loop send, and preamp out, the same thing? BTW, Ola, Loved the Deftones jam!
Yessir
I heard there's a difference in impedance so a preamp out signal is at the same level as the power amp "expects it". Because a power amp would react differently to a signal sent from fx send. But I can't hear the difference.
So can we expect a full-on cover of My Own Summer then?
I like watching the grill cloth move !☠️☠️☠️🖖
My favorite Deftones song too! 💪
Super informative brutha thanks dood
“Let’s try that or people will be like uhjudhdkfush” 😂😂😂
I'm listening to this through headphones while at work and the sound is very 3D. It actually sounds like OLA is in the room with me. When the camera is moving the sounds moves. Its kind of strange lol. Is this a new thing???
my own summer 👏🏼🎸🎶 more deftones 🤘🏼
Dude badass war master shirt!!
I think I've always been a fan of the camera audio rather than a mic'd cab.
I learned something today! 👨🏻🎓
FAQ: I've never played using tube amp + cab, as I only have a small combo. How loud does it get when you play in your studio? Are you worried about a potential hearing loss?
He has a decibel meter in many of the videos. That thing broke, if that tells you anything xD
Youre ears can take pretty loud noises for a few minutes at a time without the danger of hearing loss. It's when you go 15 minutes plus that you get in trouble.
But yeah playing from a cab like that is so loud it takes your breathe away and vibrates your whole body. It's really fun.
He has a notice on his watch that tells him it’s been to loud to long, warns about hearing loss, believe one of his demos of this had it go off
@@tommilitello198 oh yeah, I have this as well
My Mesa Triple Rec is so loud it scares me! Really! Like a rifle at close range.
I can chop a chord, & mute it quickly and hear stuff vibrating all over the house for a second or two.
Shove it, Shove it, Shove it !!!!!
Never thought I'd see the day I'd hear myself say: "the camera mic sounded better than the microphone mic!! What?
Sounds great
Jag köpte dimed och körde det i min NUX MG-300 och det blev fanken fett som jävlars!!
Nice bolt thrower shirt👌
This was the Ola emulating Ozzy video. Well done. Now add the Brit accent.....
My own summer every time
Was that a little bit Deftones right there :)..
Sounds good.
Super Ola. I have a question.
Hej Ola
Best deal (bästa köpet)😅 this or bluguitar iridium or other suggestions
I know you probably won't respond but how does the 5150 iconic cabinet compare with the Mesa boogie cab
i like these videos pls make more 💥
Preamp out is after the fx loop so you can put the effects in and record with an ir. I’m guessing.
Usually effects are between the preamp and power amp so I would imagine it wouldn’t work that way
The DI is great to go direct to FOH.
I’d run the pre to a cab emu. That DI out sounds not so great (tried irl at my local shop)
For me the camera mic is better.
Nothing sounds sounds as good as that oversized Mesa 4x12 cab in the room. Seems that emulated outputs suck?
3:25 The face!!!
obviously the emulated speaker output is for all the people who can afford the amp but not an impulse response 😉
The only problem with going direct from preamp or fx loop send is that you lose the power section (which is a big contributing factor to tone through a cab). I wish there was something like IR to emulate the power amp section (so you could choose for instance EL34 vs 6L6, etc.)
I want to say that there are roundabout ways to do that…but it wouldn’t be worth it at all to have a Simplifier DLX and bypass the preamp to just use the power amp simulation section for example.
@@therewasascene I'm using a Two Notes Captor to get around this. I'm feeding the signal straight out of speaker out.
@@shaharbar I need one of those :)
There's a few VSTs that do it. I've tried KVR Audio TPA-1 which is free and worked pretty well.
AMT has ok power amp emulation on their VirginCab pedals
We are waiting an IR with 5150 + mesa cab
Hell yeah
How's your hearing, Ola?
Can't see the point. How about using an amp as it is?
A 5150 and an oversized cab but no Chimaira riffs 😢
Sounds great! Greetings from Brazil!
Try the Friedman 412 🤤
The camera's microphone sounds better than the Neumann... 😯
Ola. What is the signal path to get the tone from the preamp out to the Neural cab section. How do you do that.
Deftones!
👏 Sounds sick!
Do these major tube amp manufacturers ever actually listen to the line out? When my jvm came, i saw it had “silent recording” with the line out. Im pretty sure my farts have more of a 3D sound than most of these direct outs
Recto OS is brutal.
Hey Ola! Is your fav Mesa 4x12 cab loaded with stock V30s?
Isn’t FX loop out including the power amp? So it should sound different than preamp out?
I'm selling my Marshall 1974 bottom cab with 25 watt greenbacks. I want to know what anybody thinks about the 5150 Iconic as a replacement cab?
It would be awesome if you threw in some pinch harmonics in your amp / tone review videos. I find that so many different setups work ok at first listen for open E chugging, but then I try pinch harmonics and it sounds super weak and disappointing.
Hey, Dude Is it worth buying ? Cause i was wondering about this tube amp but lot Of people are complaining about that head, i play Metal/ Death Metal and I am wondering Will It be a good amp for this Kind Of Metal type? \m/
can you go 4CM but use the preamp out instead? or do I have to use the emulated output (XLR)?
you will never have the same missive tone as the Mesa 4x12 coming out of those rinky dink monitors just an observation.
0:41
1:56
2:45
And no reactive load box needed
Ola is like pizza. Everyone likes him.
i thought the camera microphone sounded better lol
I wonder why Ola demo in his main channel with the matching cabinets it sounds weird
Sound so much better with that Mesa
It's true that the matching cabs sucks lol
So, he got a Gibson Mustaine V.
Jesus christ.. One mic getting that sound?! Maybe I need me a Neumann.
Yeah… the TLM 102/103 sound good, but you can get this same tone (and better) with several decent LDC mics….. or Ribbons too!
Royers sound amazing, and the Warm WA-67 kills 🤘🏽
Mix either of those with a Heil PR-30, Sennheiser E906 or Shure SM7b 🤙🏽
Just have to be sure you are using a decent preamp….. which can be had for pretty cheap these days….. like a Warm 73 or Tone Beast….
(I use Great River MP2-NV’s….. but Warm, Golden Age, BLA, & Vintech all sound great!)
This sounds much better with the mesa or the IR.
This means the match cabs sucks
And I was right - 2:00
This is perfect hi-gain sound. That is all.
Gnarly
That cab is great. That Iconic is not. ( I see that JP-2c rig sitting back there. ) Hehehe!
