In that respect, it's really very good writing advice. If you want to write diverse characters you have to get a good understanding of what makes different kinds of people tick, because anywhere you're not thinking intentionally about the character's constructed personality it just means you're unwittingly smuggling in your own.
We are ever-changing, imperfect creatures. Don't let those features cringe you out of putting pen to paper, seeing those vulnerabilites in the characters you create can likely help you understand yourself better.
That is the essence of art. We can't truly create something outside of our perspective. We can broaden it and supplement it with knowledge and experiences from others. But at the end of the day we still filter that through our own perspective. You will be in everything you create.
My personal take is that when an Artist is done with a work and makes it to the public, it's no longer his work, its ours. So, his relationship with the work is different from what you would normally expect. It is "his" work, but at the same time, not anymore. Its done and gone, even if tries to "go back and remake". Art I draw that has a huge amount of my personhood and life story in it (like a painting I did of my dad who passed away as an angel hugging me from behind while I cry but I can't see him) is often art that I become more harshly critical of more quickly and won't show to people as easily. My art has a happy, bright vibe usually but when I break out the traumatized expressions and the muted colors it generally means I'm making something I won't let see the light of day

There other anime I could drag in but again its more commercial while Gainax were striking it with the otaku being largely otaku origin themselves.
