I don't think people understand: You're looking at the guy who made the greatest movie of the 1980's revisiting the place where it was made for the first time. Just pure magic. It's a perfect, perfect film. Not one choice misses. It's just pure magic.
I had no idea others were as affected by this movie as much as me. I'm a film NUT and this is one of only three films I've ever seen that I've rated 10 out of 10, and neither of the other two had such a profound influence on how I see life. Bill, if you're reading this, I cannot thank you enough.
I finally after 39 years got to Pennan to relive some of the scenes of one of my favourite films of all time Local Hero I wasn’t disappointed but sadly couldn’t bring my lovely girlfriend with me who tragically passed away just above 2 years ago 😢I brought her photo with me though and put it on the post box at the side of the famous Red telephone ☎️ box and took some photos.I felt her spirit with me ❤️
Not sure if you guys cares but if you are stoned like me atm then you can stream all of the new series on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few weeks xD
My husband and I saw Local Hero at the pictures when it first came out, we fell in love with it. We went to Scotland in 1990 and did a Local Hero trip stating in Pennan and using the real phone box. All through the 90s my husband and I would ring the phone box from Australia! There wouldn’t be a week go by where we don’t quite something from that movie! 10 out of 10! Equal with To Kill A Mockingbird!
This is my favorite film of all time. It hasn't aged at all in 34 years. It is the sweetest adult film I have ever seen and if you have a heart and a conscience this is for you. It is such a clever, inventive, humorous, sad/sweet script. I have often wondered why in the world film makers have gone down the loud, violent, crash type of films (that, let's face it - have inspired a lot of awful crimes), when this type of story is just so wonderfully resounding in its simplicity. Wonderful.
Love this film. Went to see it with my boyfriend, now husband, in ‘83 then went camping in all the locations. 33 years later and we watched it yesterday with our daughter and her partner. Stands the test of time. Thanks Bill Forsyth special memories.
I had this on DVD and played it in my apartment on a loop, it just kept going and going and it helped me claw my way out of depression. It remains a touchstone of my recovery, and rejoining the world.
I'm probably stating what people already know, but in addition to the village scenes in Pennan the beach scenes were filmed on the west coast of Scotland around Morar and Arisaig. All stunning locations, but I'll always remember camping close to the beach, with the setting sun behind the isle of Rhum and the sea calm and smooth....
Top man Kermode for organising this.......but a greater accolade to Bill Forsyth, who, without fanfare and manic OTT advertising, directed a British masterpiece, a film that lingers in the mind long after 'epics' have died away.Bill imbued his film with that much-sort after quality most director can't achieve; a whimsical, simple atmosphere and charm....every scene has it, the music by Knopfler has, the lighting has it.....and Bill Forsyth has it!
Arguably the most beautiful, most profund, and most eternal film in modern cinema history. And very funny as well. Today, on June 6 2023 there is an amazing article about this film on BBC, as to how it is the first movie that speaks on the environment entirely, and centrally. I have also seen it a hundred times, and it is likely I may see it many dozens more. It also has one of the most beautiful endings in cinema history.
This film is the perfect one for me. It's whimsical, it's deep, it's just plain fun. It's perfect. Bill Forsyth is a special person and I love him for it.
Adore this movie. It reasonates with me so much because I had a year-out as a student living and working in a West Wales seaside village not unlike "Ferness" (Pennan). I didn't want to leave. The Scottish filmed scenes and narrative are of course at the core of this film, but the US scenes, especially Lancaster's psychotic therapist are brilliant. A film, not to watch, but to immerse yourself in. Thank's for the upload Llangyfelach!
In 1982 a few friends and I drove across the hills from Aboyne, Aberdeenshire to Banff. When we drew up into the car park there was a telephone box chained to a pick up truck !!! ?. We were told that Burt Lancaster and the film team were staying in the hotel and that the telephone box featured somehow in their new movie. They brought it home every night after shooting.
Yes, a tribute was in order, and thanks to this obvious "Local Hero" fan for arranging such a fun tribute. The film is one of my all-time favorites as well--a gorgeous, funny, quirky, deeply human, socially conscious film that remains just as relevant and moving today. The soundtrack by Mark Knopfler is also exceptional--fantastic music that blends well with scenes in the film but also stands on its own as one of the best soundtracks ever. (So get the album, if you don't have it already.)
thanks for this post...left scotland for the us as a 9 yr old and this movie has a special place in my heart...the music will be played at my final curtain..
Scotland and Pennan, tug at the heart strings, I watched this film when it came out and loved it then, I must have watched it 50 plus times and I will never get bored of it. One day, I will visit, on my motorbike, however, I won't be blasting through the village :-) Because of this film, I can now play the Local Hero, Going Home theme on guitar :-)
I loved the movie so much I went to Pennan, and during the couple of hours I was there a motorcycle went blasting down the street. Also I saw those American Air Force jets go screeching overhead.
A beautiful movie. It creates its own world, somewhere between reality and a dream. Light as a feather and warm and gentle, and yet almost heartbreaking for some reason I can never really articulate. I first saw this film in a theatre in London. I was a university student at the time, and I saw it while on a date with the girl I was seeing, the girl who was my first true love. As Bill says in this video, I've tried to watch it since, in screenings, online, on DVD. I have yet to make it to the end again. I just find myself awash in those feelings, those memories, and I can't believe how long ago that was, how old I have gotten, how much I miss those carefree days, as well as that girl. I have a genuinely happy life, don't misunderstand, but there is something in this movie that is magical. Any artist whose work can evoke in viewers the same sweet sadness more than three decades later is truly a master. Thanks so much for this video.
Great film and yes Pennan is a lovely place..I am just home from a week in Arisaig where most of the beach scenes were filmed. Morar & Camusdarrach beaches have to be see to be believed ' heaven on earth'
Thank you for posting this it was magical to watch. Firstly Mark Kermode is a fan. Secondly how I would have loved to attended that function to watch the film in Pennan with Bill Forsyth present, wow! After a 35yr wait I finally visited Pennan for the first time last month. What a special experience as I wandered around with the soundtrack playing on my iPod. I went into the hotel for a pint and along with the film poster on display they have the actual gramophone used in the film and a somewhat faded framed local newspaper article about the shoot on display. Local Hero is my favourite film it deserves a sequel. I would love to see Mac get a call in Houston to say Gordon has left the Hotel to him and for him to return and see the Happer institute.
One of my favourite films along with Highlander. I am blessed to live in Aberdeenshire not far from Pennan and I can often go out my front door in the winter and view the aurora. Fantastic film.
saw this in the cinema last night (first time since I saw it since I did so on its release) and it is still as relevant and as fresh today as it was then. Fantastic to see it in the cinema again.
Happy to find this and others who claim this as their favorite film. Quite a special touchstone, including stunning score from my favorite musician, Mark Knopfler. Fantastic, and always moving, to hear the film theme live in concert.
I used to live nearby in the early 90s. I remember a few nights in the Pennan Inn, having a pint of heavy and some sticky toffee pudding. Wrote something wistful in the visitor book. Strangely enough it came true.
Great great film. Of course that which was evoked on screen was an amalgam of Pennan and a location (or two) on the west coast. So to get the full LH experience, esp the stunning half-light 'gloaming' beach scenes, you'd need to visit both places.
Local Hero taught me about what "Home" is. It's like a lost beautiful girlfriend who elicited emotions no one else ever has. I nearly sold up and moved to west Scotland. I was born in Scotland and my first memories are of Edinburgh. I'm about as far from home as I can be, but Local Hero reminds me that I can get there
Well Done Mark....One of my all time top 10 Movies .Its a shame that Felix Happer..Mr Burt Lancaster is no longer with us too,He was one of the best in the best movies of all time you do not need a large budget just a good story line and a good Cast and good Director, and the rest will be history.. ...
I was in Pennan Last month and Magical is the only word that comes to mind. I met a few of the Locals, and had a great pint in the Hotel . Go Visit Pennan Scotland you wont be sorry.
If you love this, don't miss his beautiful, underrated Christmas movie 'Comfort and Joy' with Bill Paterson. It should be a seasonal classic in the UK and Ireland.
Ah bugger it. As a passionate fellow fan of the film, I sure wish I had known about the event. Glad it happened though for this great filmmaker. I hope to visit Pennan someday.
Fans of Local Hero should watch Rockets Galore from 1956 free on youtube. You will recognize that it is a source film for Local Hero. Similar theme and several shots are hat tips to Rockets Galore including the helecopter on the beach. Beautifully filmed in the Outer Hebrides. Rockets Galore has many of the same actors as Whisky Galore a seminal post WWII Scottish B&W film from 1948. Rockets Galore also influenced Dr. Strangelove in the character of Dr. Hamburger, the Nazi paperclip rocket scientist now working for British military. All are masterpieces.
Same here, Claes. I don't know anyone who's ever seen it, other than the person I saw it with. I went nuts for it, and watched it over and over, and tried to convince everyone I knew to see it. But no one ever did.
Beautiful, haunting, bittersweet film. Just watched it again yesterday for the first time since I was a kid in the '80s. Just have one question: why does Happer not recognize MacIntyre, whom he of course has already met a few days ago, when he visits the place towards the end of the movie?
I think it is meant to portray the fact that in big business multinationals you ere just a number not a person. As head of that company he doesn't feel the need to match names to faces. That is beneath him. In other words Mac as a person doesn't matter .He is am employee, a number.
@@scottmclaren3928 Yes, that's probably it. And Riegert and Capaldi are roughly the same size and the lighting at night is casting strange shadows, making it difficult to see clearly.
Bill Forsyth doesn't get the acclaim he deserves...you have fantastic social values Bill....I saw you in Glasgow about 10 years ago and wanted to go up and say hello but didn't...try and make more movies Bill..from another Glaswegian

what are the others?
Yeah wtf. Tell us the others lol
What are the other 2 ?
Ring of Bright Water..

It warms my heart to know there are others who love this film like I do.
Lisa-and-Camera.Com where are you from?
Who doesn't? Movie magic. Keep the Union Together at all costs. Little JIMMY Crankie can go fuck herself. Self serving little Spaz that she is.
You're not alone girl.
Not sure if you guys cares but if you are stoned like me atm then you can stream all of the new series on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few weeks xD
@Kieran Damon yup, I have been using InstaFlixxer for years myself =)
My favourite film too. 40 years, and never been beaten.
My husband and I saw Local Hero at the pictures when it first came out, we fell in love with it. We went to Scotland in 1990 and did a Local Hero trip stating in Pennan and using the real phone box. A genuine homage and respectful representation of a fabulous film.
Painfully, beautifully bittersweet film, that generates love.

yip i never tire of this film .. even spent my honeymoon there in 85
Films have inspired violence? ?hmm ,nope!
My favourite adult film is pink velvet 3: a lesbian odyssey
There are no words that do justice to how great this film truly is--eternally grateful to Bill Forsyth for creating one of my all time favorite films.
Love this film. Went to see it with my boyfriend, now husband, in ‘83 then went camping in all the locations. 33 years later and we watched it yesterday with our daughter and her partner. Stands the test of time. Thanks Bill Forsyth special memories.

14 years later and this piece still gives me goosebumps...what a dream job to be there...to do this...with Bill
One of my all time favorite movies and soundtracks!

Pretty much a flawless film.
So wonderful ❤
Such an exquisite movie. There are no words, really. Everything came together for that piece of art. Everything.

If I ever feel like lying my head down to sleep for a long time this would be the place I'd most want to do it.
Seeing the film tomorrow for the first time. Never seen. But been recommended to see by my friend who’s girlfriends dad made the main song!
Mark Knopfler

Stephen Hogarth great story thanks for sharing it.
Just watched it this evening and this is the perfect ending. Bill Forsyth, a gentle man.
How lovely to come across this suddenly. What a lovely thing to have done.

Just saw this for the first time today on 35mm print. So, so gorgeous and sweet and funny. Life affirming in a way.
In hospital this week watched local hero again, also Jimmy Stewart in Harvey and the Joseph Locke inspired Hear my song all quirky all terrific
My favorite film of all time. For about ten years, I would watch it weekly.

Very good!
I am going to make it to Pennan. As God is my witness, I'm going to Pennan.
Aye!
Enjoy the mental drive into the village... the roads are worse than how it looks in the film!
Fabulous. One of my all-time favourite movies.
can't see a great film too often. just breathtaking
Wow, this was a fantastic trip down memory lane. I have also watched Local Hero dozens of times and love turning on friends to it.
Why don't they make movies like this anymore , it's just the best
It is, and always has been, one of my favourite films ever.
This is really wonderful. Thanks Mark, and thanks Bill.

truly a magical place, even after such a long time.
Strings of guitar make me well up , talk about pulling the heart strings with it man .
Love, love, love this film.
Best username :)
'Local Hero' has had a tremendous influence on my life, from the time I saw it in the theaters to this very day.
Couldn't agree with him more, one of may favorite films of all time...a film I would love to "live in".
Great, great homage to a brilliant movie!

One of my two favorite films in the whole world.
One of my favorite movies, glad to see others share the sentiment. I was 10 when I first saw it. Hopefully I'll make it to Pennan.
rggast You will. I have just visited after a 35 yr wait and it was magical.

Just wonderful, what a great post. Bill Forsyth seems like a lovely chap.

LOVE THIS FILM. I want to visit there before I die.

It’s a lovely place. In fact the whole Aberdeenshire coastline is perfect to me.
Love this film.

"It had a name. Two names!"
Great! Thanks so much for posting this.
Best Scottish film ever
Should be more nice stories told like this guy did .....A fantastic movie and . music score well done 🎂
Love
fav film. film of its time with one foot in the future.
Loved that movie and Gregory's Girl was also a funny, coming of age movie.
Wonderful film
"But there's two 'G's in 'bugger off'."
my fav too
That was brilliant!
I always mention Local Hero as the best film I have seen!
And none of my friends never heard of it :(
Serve the beer and they will come-and love the movie, I bet!

I think that 40 years on (2023) its the only truly perfect British film made in those four decades.
peter capaldi was so cute in this
Bill Forsyth doesn't get the acclaim he deserves...you have fantastic social values Bill....I saw you in Glasgow about 10 years ago and wanted to go up and say hello but didn't...try and make more movies Bill..from another Glaswegian
Been there. Even made a phone call from the red telephone box 🙂
My favorate film. They don't make them like that anymore.
Local Hero and then Northern Exposure inspired partly but the former.
Lovely 😀
Perfect film.
Bill must be protected at all costs
