I'm a Western NC resident, as well as Western NC LEO. First five minutes of this video is 100% true. Locals have been putting boots on the ground and getting things done. Wealthy philanthropists and small nonprofits have been funding an overwhelming majority of supplies to the area since day 1. Also, that bit about making contacts has been huge during this relief effort. I experience that as LEO a few times, someone coming into to EOC asking how they can help, we didn't need assistance from their skillset, but I know a guy that does know where you can help, here is his contact. That was a huge piece of the puzzle. The lack of communication for the first week was an absolute crisis. Love that you guys made this video. There is so much to learn from this.

I ain't trying to throw anybody under the bus here nor there I usually keep to myself and just fish but I've heard some rotten stuff about some command elements that just did some horrible decision making, and I'm afraid that can't be hidden, you won't stand for either if you're a person of integrity.. you seem like you are..
Pushing forward, working on the fly, I'm right on the line on the Tennessee side .
Oh man, I seen a wall of water, a straight line vortex just train wreck and flattened these mountaintops..
It was a literal wall of water I can't say it any other way I was thinking I'm next..
I didn't realize below me, on the lower grounds, was getting absolutely train wrecked, I was trapped in my lil road..
It was 18 hours before we could get the pass cut up and dozered open,
That's when I started seeing the washouts.
I can't explain it any other way, if you can visualize a straight line wind wall of water..
I bumped into fellow veterans along the way, we just went at it.. on the fly we synchronized up and handle business, cleared the objective and move to the next.. I'm proud and honored to have worked with these men of the Highlands.. the circumstances was horrible, however I' met the real men out there handling business in the High Country, we all live here, we all have each other's backs regardless of a job title..
      Why?
      Because America...🇺🇸
Ps (To the male species that did nothing..
We know who you are too, thanks for nothing)
      Nothing further out..

I agree. We had a crew of 6 go up to averey county from the foothills with saws and supplies in a couple trucks. Saw one chinook dropping supplies, but the vast majority of people were just good dudes with equipment and the knowledge to use it. 99% civilians from all over. Hell, we were helping locate missing people with an outfit out of PA! The amount of community support shows that we, in the Appalachian Mountains, never have and never will need the federal government. They've only ever gotten in our way.

You featured a family friends home in one of the images in the beginning. She has a dog kennel there as her small business. She waded through waist deep water as it flowed down the mountain and creek to save 20 animals. By time she got the last animals out, she couldn’t make it back to her home and had to take refuge in the attic of a barn. Shortly after a mudslide hit the barn she was taking refuge in. Fortunately she survived. And due to her selfless efforts, all the animals survived as well.

I've been to roughly 12-15 points like the Banner Elk airfield over the past two weeks and y'all happened to be based out of the best run operation I've seen. The other ones are all doing great work but the Sentinel folks were crushing it for sure; it turns out that many of the SOF Core Competencies translate well into many different non combat scenarios including disaster relief. As someone who was hit by Helene, what made me sad was to see just 2 or 3 days later there were state troopers and cops pulling people over instead of directing traffic in high traffic areas that were closed off, traffic lights that were not working. This was very sad to see. Im sorry if you have time to speed trap people you should have time helping your community.

And this is where people need to understand their authority. Under an emergency situation, NFPA guidelines outline how fire departments and EMS have superseding authority over all police activity. Someone should've been directing them to a useful activity instead of allowing them to cause problems with traffic flow.
I've been in the fire service for a long time but most people don't have any idea how all of this is supposed to work.

No cops directing traffic, moving trees, placing signs, nope. Sitting in a parking lot waiting for accidents to then give traffic tickets.

In western North Carolina, we went and helped last weekend. Went up 19E towards Minneapolis and Roaring creek. Only named organization we saw along the way, outside of the national guard helicopters and a few national guard vehicles with guys, was Samaritans Purse. They were going to homes that were affected by major flooding, and helping with cleanup and manual labor. Continuing on, roaring creek was heavily hurt by the hurricane. Brought supplies and helped with some labor. Super glad to have people like you and sentinel foundation that are willing to step up and help our community. From the Carolinas, thank you.

I think what you helped with is great. The anti-government sentiment is unfounded. The government isn't an expert in the area, doesn't know the roads, doesn't know the people. The 'government' you keep referring to is still people. They need to be brought up to speed and to be able to fit into the puzzle like anyone else unfamiliar with an area. The best way for them to help is to serve the distribution centers that have the local knowledge. Cleetus was in a tiny helicopter and he said the HLZs were tight and stressful and that a blackhawk and chinook would've been unable to serve people he was able to reach based on not only space but other worries about rotor wash and clearance to questionable/compromised utilities. I've been close to a chinook taking off and had to hide behind a car to stay upright- the force is eye-opening. Locals were also a bottleneck as they fought for control (noting that one threatening a helicopter pilot with arrest for helping move people) and some were not experienced enough to deploy a Starlink (which is near-dead-simple). Forgetting that 'government' is people and that everyone doesn't know everything drives division and that's not what's going to help in the wake of disaster. Yes there is red tape, yes there is stupidity, but there's a word for all of this: unprecedented.
Luckily my area was out of the path but we had a boil water notice caused by the rainfall overwhelming water treatment. Local cooperation was great and we even saw local breweries boiling water and distributing it. I can't even imagine what my area would have done if the water was unusable for showering and hand washing or if we lost water service.
Thank you for your channel and videos, but don't fall for the anti-government trap as it is easy but can cause more harm than good. Be anti-stupidity instead.

Its amazing what we did here with very little help from the government and theres a tiny little part of me that appreciates it. It was the most amazing thing ever to ve apart of. Every able bodied man and woman with a chainsaw, atv and tractor showed up, we had 5 small bridges wash out on my road and within a week 3 of them were back. It wasn't thr state or county that did that, just the local farmers and trade workers on my road.

I am actually planning on saving up for a couple years to get an old piper cherokee or cesna 172 to learn to fly, go on vacations, rent it out to pay its payments, and BIG GOAL is to respond to disasters like this. I first looked into SAR with helos, but they cost millions. A good used piper is 75k. I just think being able to run resources out to these disaster areas would be a good thing to be involved in.

I would highly recommend to any civilian to go take the ICS (incident command system) courses online. They're free. It was implemented by CalFire back in the 60s or 70s and are the standard for incident response across the US. Fire departments live by ICS every call.

My wife and I had come down to Swannanoa, NC from Connecticut with our side by side to help get supplies to people in the mountains for around 7 days. The devastation was immense but the community in that area is so resilient. I've never seen so many people come together to help each other. Aside from the just the local community, I had met people who had come from all over the state of NC, the country and even some lineman from Canada who had come to volunteer their time and expertise. Truly outstanding people and community. We hope to get back down there mid November to do more of what we can to help. Thank you guys for lending aid as well!

Our church in western, PA raised $14,000 to be disturbed to those effected down south primarily going through Samaritans purse. We also sent a "recon" team to North Carolina consisting of church elders and volunteers. They were able to make contact with several local churches and distribute their entire load of donations directly to these churches and their devastated congregations. In addition, they were able to do meaningful work during their 3 days there, cleaning up trees and debris from people's property damaged by the floods. were soon planning to return to continue lending a hand.

30 years ago an operation like this would have been impossible. Americans are becoming more capable in general due to modern communications, the internet and general exposure to the world through the internet. Most people who know what a 'go bag' is will have 10x the knowledge in what to do during a disaster than their equivalent in the 90's. People are changing and for the better.

It's been 22 days since the storm, and I went to help a lady today in the Minneapolis community. She has no power, but she was able to walk over a mile up the mountain to fix her own spring. The stream behind her property removed a few hundred feet of her property, and is only a few inches of rain from taking more, but there is no way she can afford to hire a contractor with an excavator(even if you can find one) to fix what was taken.
I say this because she lives less than a mile from a major highway. What once was a 2 lane paved rd is now a single lane trail that you have to dodge power lines and trees. And by local standards, she is doing fine. She has water and has a wood stove. It is hard to explain how bad this really is. As a local, I want to thank each and every one who has helped in any way. We will rebuild, but this would have broken the community had it not been for the generosity of all of you.

In upstate South Carolina we were hit hard before the eye rolled into NC. I was proud to see small landscaping businesses stepping up to clear large oak trees from the roads and power lines long before Duke Energy. Duke Energy was calling in contractors from Canada and ‘staging’ at Haywood Mall meanwhile private citizens and entities were doing a lot of the cleanup. It took a week for Duke Energy just to restore the power here. $2K of stored food loss that had to be replaced since we can’t afford a generator to run refrigerators or freezers. Future planning is to buy one but that will be a while. At least the power is on, hurricane season ‘seems’ to be over, and we are well. WNC definitely got the worst with the mudslides and flooding. My prayers go out to the families effected there. If I was rich, I would quit work and go help. But alas, my own family needs me to keep providing. Godspeed to Grindstone, Sentinel, and others who are sacrificing so much.

I've sent money the initial first days after researching to find the best place and will continue every month I get paid. There are multiple great places to donate to now, so it's difficult to choose just one at this point. I wish I could be there physically to help, but the best I can do is donate for now. God bless you all for all the hard work. 🙏 ❤

Question: Have you heard talk about deliver of build on site mountain community centers powered by solar generator complete need for internet, phones, community meeting, doctor/nurse visit, food, supplies, potty, shower, washing machines. I saw a few designs that were light weight walls, floor and roof suited for air delivery. 100% water proof 40’ x 60’ attachable buildings with walls that are filled with water. Mr. Musk has these designs and they look nice. This design is meant for the 101 meeting needs for mountain communities.

We had new neighbors move in and within a day she's got all their names, what dogs they have, where they came from, where they work, what they like to do, etc.
She just rides around town on her golf cart and she scopes everything out.

Really amazing video. A future model government should be simply funding organizations like Sentinel and give them some nation guard members to help them out.
I recall some liberal new channel (forgot which one) criticizing private rescue efforts saying something along the lines of "Oh sure, you deliver water to people in need, but then they are going to need clear underwear the next day! You guys are not going to provide it, go home and let the government do their job." It was really irratating because a) people are continue going to need clean water coming in until their wells or public water systems are running again and B) your video is demonstrating civilian rescue groups are covering an even wider range of needs than FEMA ever could.

Some people are simply such miserable, selfish shits that anyone doing anything REMOTELY selfless, compassionate - they've got to knock it down however in order to try and justify their complete and willing uselessness to their fellow man.
I can't imagine how sad and dead inside people like that have allowed themselves to become .. but hey, who knows, maybe they work for the government themselves and are (hopefully), deep down, disgusted with the repeated heartbreaking.. sickening responses time and time again to tragedy. Especially here in the land of the brave and free... It's a spirit killer for sure. Just hope those types can see the value they have and even more so, a place of power (though I'm sure they feel defeated or unheard rly) .. and yk, even if no one wants to listen.. the entire point of the position is to exercise your authority. But FOR us. Not against. We are you. Those people their 'superiors' wouldn't let through and condemned to death..? Yeah, why .. for Any reason.. money, status, blahblah...even 'higher ideals'.. would you ever build any type of future anything on that type of foundation?
Just building on sand imo 😞.
Wish our men would get good and pissed (for the right reasons) .. wouldn't take many to stand up and shit turn around fast. Weak leaders w no morals or sense of dedication to the community, environment etc.. just breeds this type of cowardice, ignorance, negligence. But lol if you ask them it's a 'survival of the fittest' 🙄. No, that's what you call being an exceptional moron, skilled only in disappointment.
Lmao sorry for rant ! 😂 Thank you for helping these people however you could. This storm was insane and it is awesome to see that American Spirit who the world thought dead and gone... Come roaring to life within seconds. And on no small event but some unreal shit. Stay strong, keep heart ! ❤

Although the fed has it issues, remember they are comprised of people just like you and me, who given the opportunity would gladly help. Not to mention the wealth of knowledge and expertise they can bring. Its the suits and their deep-pocket backed bureaucracy, not those in uniforms doing what they think is a service to their country. Just semantics but I'd hate to generalize and discredit those who have made a willing sacrifice.
