Glad I ran into this review. I am about to give this a try to see if it can from the gitgo configure the disk to use encrypted btrfs with multiple subvols. The installation app is so far the most flexible I have ever seen. More later...
@@TheLinuxITGuy Well it worked out perfectly, no need for opening a busybox console session to build the subvols for btrfs just made one mistake by letting it set up a swap file which totally ticked off timeshift but after I corrcted that it works great. Only weidness that I have not figured out yet is timeshift takes several seconds like 45 or so to do a snapshot but restoring one is virtually instant. Last debian install I tried it on the snap was instant also. The MX tools are really great.
@@TheLinuxITGuy I found some others who had posted about having the same exact issue with timeshift on Fedora. Some thought it might have been X11 vs wayland but I tried switching and its still the same. Takes the same amount of time to delete a snapshot as well. But restore is instant and it all works with no errors. If the timeshift logs were down to the second I think I might could figure it out but not so much. It also looks like hourly does not work either on timeshift. Everything else is stellar though. The install app and MX Tools just puts this over the top for a daily driver.
Excellent review. I prefer a distro that is neither corporate nor maintained by an individual. The MX community is top notch. Complaints about the way it looks seem superficial to me. It's Linux, you can make it look any way you like. I prefer XFCE, but if you don't, there's KDE. So far, MX Linux is the most reliable to automatically connect to my network printer. I'm certainly not a power user and I've had zero issues on the default use of sysvinit. There is also a convenient systemd capability.
Just installed it today. Got my hands on Linux just this year but I got very much used to some basic terminal functions, so did sudo apt update and upgrade straight away. Mine has the xfce desktop, not sure I have ever had kde plasma version... hope it will work better on my old 2007 laptop than Wilma did, on a HDD instead of SSD. It worked well on SSD (Wilma) but I didn't like its slow performance on HDD, hence trying this. Fingers crossed!
Can you do a video on how to setup and connect to a hotspot? I'm using MX-Linux 23.4 on my raspberry pi 5 and want to be able to connect to it on my cellphone.
PERFECTION ?...for a linux distro...as close as you can get. For the slightly older systems like my well loved Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen3 the light and quick XFCE is excellent. Keep in mind you are using a distro WITHOUT the kludge and fragility of the systemd malware. If I'm force to use systemd then I might as well just run windows after all... This is why I have left the once good Linux Mint and then Debian when it also was corrupted by systemd to sound and reliable MX and Antix.
while I appreciate the tool set, the theming is trash to be honest. They got no polish at all. One example is when you hover your mouse cursor to the corner of a window to resize the window, it's a nightmare to grab the corner properly. It's been so many years and they still have done no work on it.
You got to be kidding me! Open MX Tweak > Theme tab > Window Manager and select one of four thick-border options. They've had that for years. There are at least 3 other ways of grabbing the corner for themes with super thin borders but it is easier IMO to use thick borders.
I must be missing something. Why would anyone use a distro that looks like it was made in 1992? Like its just ugly as sin lets be completely honest. So why is this like always number one on distrowatch? I don't get it.
Yeah you are definitely missing something..you can always customize the looks if you don't like the default one. Moreover other than aesthetics, there are more than meets the eye with MX-Linux. Strong hardware support, usability and stability, Debian based --> things just work very well and I'm having a hard time trying to break MX-Linux.
I was using a computer in 1992 and this looks NOTHING like it, it's even more updated than desktops in 2000, just because it isn't your favorite does not mean it's bad.
XFCE is extremely custmizable to look however you want. Besides, you can change the DE yourself to the most modern or archaic looking one at any time, regardless of distro. Linux is what you make of it.
I mean, function over form my guy. Legendary Debian support and stability in an easier to use form, on top of having different desktop versions, and the ability to roll your own if the ones available don't suit. I'm using the KDE edition, and in just a few setting changes, I have it looking pretty sweet
MX Linux STILL has too many flaws but have not tried anything concerning the latest except it WONT boot just like the last 3 versions. #1 XFCE is for 32bit machines at best. We need MATE to be the Main DE. #2 need to be able to update to the latest version without it breaking. #3 Its freakin ugly....ugly logo an ugly name. Perhaps drop the word Linux and call it M X

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

@@jerryfairclothI was blown away by MX’s tools. So good. Curious about the 45 sec delay with timeshift.

If you want a good distro that uses btrfs, try spiral linux
I love this distro so much. This + Qtile is my dream setup
Great Review! Many Thanks to you... Using daily since 2014...
Thank you! It’s an awesome OS.
They got MX to work on Ventoy now? I remember in the past I never could get it to boot properly when putting the ISO on a Ventoy stick. Cool.
MX has been supported since 2020/04/14 --- 1.0.05 Release.
Thanks for watching.
MX Linux Xfce my daily driver since May this year. Very fast install, quick, stable and easy to use.
Great to hear and thanks for watching
Clear and concise video. Great job. At 3:50 you can also right click on the update icon and select Check for updates.
Thanks! I use my Toolbox to update the system mainly.

How’d it go?
@@TheLinuxITGuy OK, but the youtube is still jumpy. It was OK on Wilma on SSD.
You should use 1080 resolution. Would be better for my eyes 😎
I should have zoomed in more.
Agree, I can read shyt.
Yes, it looks really practical. In many distros there more beautiful gui, but that have no sense if to configurate all you must use terminal.
MX still prefers sysinit over systemd? I do like systemd
mxlinux.org/wiki/system/systemd/
Default is sysinit. You can use boot option tool to change it to systemd.

Hotspots aren’t really any different than WiFi at home. You’ll just need to know your SSID and your password.
@@TheLinuxITGuy Does that mean no? I don't know my SSID just password.
Why would I use this instead of LMDE 6?
Up to you. MX has lots of tools pre-installed worth giving a look.
I guess it is lighter than LMDE, good for older hardware.

I really enjoyed MX. Are you running the XFCE version?
I have used Mate and Ghnome but I really lile the symplicity of XFCE. Fast, resource efficient and reliable...
Nice
