I’ve bred several batches of bettas in the past and I’m currently raising up several more. When it comes to the runts something that’s really helped me get them to grow is separating them out from the bigger fish to allow them to get some more of that food and give them a bit more space. Still takes them a long time to grow, like you were saying about the genetics (I’d say about twice as long as the growers. for example I had some in a batch that were fully grown by 3.5 months whereas the runts took 6-7 months for full growth). I’m by no means an expert but just my experience. Beautiful looking fry by the way, so great to see!
It's the same with guppies. Each time I see one colouring up, I take it out of the community tank and then another of those left behind will speed up in development. Also, it helps sort out 'sneaker males,' the males that look like females, have the drabber colouring of females, but have a gonopodium that looks like a pointy anal fin. They like the pretend to hang out with the 'fellow' females, then sneak-impregnate them when the males aren't looking. With more developed males removed, they don't have any reason to hide the fact that they are male. I reckon the dominant, more developed guppies release hormones into the water, which inhibits and slows down the development of the other less developed guppies. By separating them, they aren't exposed to this and with doing water changes more often, there are less pollutants in the water and they don't need to compete for food also.
I have a question, you may not know the answer and Thats ok but how come the jet black and the platinum fry had so much blue in them? Is it a like recessive trait?
The pink betta that you bred is actually called a mascot betta so i think you’re gonna have a lot of mascot crown, comb or maybe halfsun betta. love the videos btw i breed bettas here in the Philippines and looking to get into danios soon because of your videos✨✨✨
Nick get some of those colour blind glasses just so you can appreciate the true colours of your fish now and then, even if you dont show it on UA-cam it would be a great thing to have for yourself personally. Great video as always buddy
Anyone who tells you that you are anything but amazing has a lot to learn. You are trying and learning and that's awesome keep going outside the box and be you. Haters are going to hate. It's sad they have to put someone down to feel like they count in life. I can't wait to see your shows and what you are doing.
The lavender and pink bettas are so gorgeous and so cute! If there isn't an official name for that kind of coloring/breed, I'd label them Fairy Bettas. Cute, very active, and with that iridescent purple and pink colors to them. I can't wait to see what they look like as adults!
got to say, really love the natural blue colours on these young bettas! Especially in combination with them still being young and kinda having the body of a croaking dwarf gourami. Wonderful fish!
Nice video :) Betta release GIH that’s why you have big size difference! You can put the bigger ones in an other tank, do a big water change (to remove the hormones) than the little ones will have the chance to grow bigger! Love from Quebec, Canada! Xx
I empathise with you, especially considering how keen you are on breeding tropical fish and not fully seeing the reward of your labours, with their vivid colourings, which are a joy to see.
Unless someone is completely color blind (which is extremely rare) they can see color, just not the full scale, my point is he can appreciate the colors in his fish, but is kind of difficult for him to transmit the visual information he is getting to others because, well, is simply not the same. there is the opposite case in which a mutation allow you to have 4 colors receptors (instead of the 3 most people have) resulting in the ability to see a lot more colors (also differentiate between more tones) than the rest of us, some time even expanding into the near infrared!
Betta color (and fin type) genetics are not that random, there are just many rezessiv genes for example the black one. It needs some learning if you want to know which colors you can get in a batch. But sometimes a surprise is also nice. And your batch of crowntail x plakat will get combtail fins in medium length.
So glad you posted this because I was wondering. Blue being my favorite color. So, these fish are turning into really beautiful fish. To me the lavenders have a different variety of purplish/blue and bluish/purple. The metallic blues were awesome. I can't wait to see the calicos. Sometimes the hardest thing is to do your thing and tell the rest of the world to buzz off. You're doing a great job and getting results doing your own thing. Pick out any useful constructive criticism that's useful and pitch the rest. For a young person you're doing great as a person much older. Your "disability" doesn't seem hamper you. Can't wait to see the new fish room.
Thank you for the updated video and thank you to whomever that was in the comment section of original video posting link to this one for me! I pray there’s another video like he said he would post as they fully mature. This is so exciting to see, I just started watching and wanted to comment that because I was so thankful to get to see the colors of the fry to adult.
Congrats on your spawns, that are all looking great. Watch those red/blue bicolours in the Koi spawn, they tend to start marbling for me around the 3 month mark. With your Crowntail crosses, you'll get a variety of webbing reduction in the final result. Should be some real stunners colourwise! Don't be so hard on yourself. It's fun to play with Genetics to see what they do.
if anyone hasn't mentioned it, more frequent water changes during growth with help reduce runt rate via reduction of growth inhibiting hormones and enzymes released by the alphas of the spawn.Your an awesome dude, frustrations can only make u betta 😸 best Aquarist channel on UA-cam please don't stop! 🔥🤘
As someone who bred bettas once before and is trying again now this is actually really useful information you're providing because I haven't actually come across many videos of people sharing their bettas at this stage of growth, the culls, the big ones etc. Thx for sharing love this type of content. There are alot of very defensive betta enthusiasts out there who think their opinions are the only correct ones (see them on FB groups all the time) just ignore them lol. If I end up with culls I might just consider giving them to a friend who keeps something big that would eat is as live food. Also, dont sell your wisdom short bro, I am betting anyone dumb enough to criticise hasn't kept or raised fish successfully to your extent.
Loved the third tank, a combination of iridescent pink, blue and lavender with their light colored bodies that makes their eyes pop 🥰 excellent combo pair
Man never owned a fish tank but happened to scroll upon your page and now I’m filling up on info before I purchase my first aquarium.. thanks for all the useful info. Everything I’ve looked into that you’ve said has been true so thanks for being reliable
Oh my goodness those last ones 😍When I saw you pair the platinum crown tail and pink/lavender female together, I was very interested and excited to see the results...absolutely stunning! Can't wait to see their fully mature colors!
My brother was dyslexic and he hid it from everyone he saw it as a weakness which it is not being color blind if a gift. It is great to see you accept it so readily. Keep up the good work
The pink/lavender bettas are gorgeous! And the white/black, who would have thought they would come out like that?! There were some pretty ones in there too!
The fact that you are taking action into your curiosity says alot about who you are and I guarantee those trolling on here to be negative have no ambition n no goals so don't ever let negativity bring your shine down
Thank you! We just got a baby betta from a pet store who looks just like the pale guys in your last tank. Pale, lavender and beady little eyes. Very active and loves eating. Our first time raising a baby and it's so fun watching him get bigger and change. We have been changing his water, we added a heater and we are feeding him a combo of crushed pellets, crushed flakes and mealworms. I love your enthusiasm and am impressed by your knowledge. cheers
The fry look great. You might try seperating the runts to get them more space and less competition for food. Get a pair of color glasses. You need the pleasure of seeing your fish colors.
Not sure that you will see this but I have to thank you for getting me into the hobby. I watched a few of md’s videos and stumbled onto your page and it gave me the confidence to start keeping fish. These videos are so fun to watch and really help me relax after a long day. Keep up with the videos they are awesome.
Thanks for the update! I was wondering about the breeding projects and how things are progressing. You did fantastic with the colors! Try not to let the negativity get to you 🙂.
I use to breed, show and sell guppies 60 years ago. Watching your channel has motivated me to start raising fish again (not guppies). Great channel, very informative. Thanks
In commercial breeding programs, for food or pets in Brazil, we always separate the fry based on its size. It is almost impossible to achieve a very homogeneous batch with high populational density and the adequate density varies with the specie, at least with the species commonly reproduced in my country. Specifically talking about betas is common to put each individual alone in its own aquarium, sometimes a cup with volume less than 500ml. It may difficult some procedures as tpa and stuff, but it forces/facilitates the observation of the growth, food intake, etc of every individual.
I would say they are pale lilac in this vid but they are absolutely adorable. I am always so impressed with your videos. You know more than you give yourself credit for. ♥️
Once again, I absolutely Love seeing fish develop from fry like this. All the stages and changes are awesome to see. Thank for the video dude, you rock!
I just havw to tell you your amazing! To keep so many and know so much and each specific name its just wow! These babies really have grown so much in those two-three months and to breed them yourself is just awesome!!! You know so much and there is always more to learn so don't beat yourself up about, because what you do is beautiful I see your passion and how much you love them. Not to mention your videos are awesome and I love how you try and explain everything so well. Keep up the hard work!❤
Love this! Don't be so hard on yourself color wise, you're spot on with their colors and the lavender accents are amazing. Love their hot pink little cheeks
Love love love your videos, hands down the best help , I am breeding Betas for the first time thanks to you! Keep the good work, I can feel the passion in your posts!
I can’t wait to see the outcome of these fry. The 3rd tank of beta are also my favorite. Please do keep us updated. Who knows, maybe I’ll buy a few. Currently have tanks of various sizes and there just in storage. Plus my daughter has a community tank.
Thank you for the update! Seeing the outcome of all these different combinations is super neat. Keep up the good work and good luck with your new place!
My 12 year old and I are using your videos on betta breeding to conduct our own trial for the love of it. She’s always asking for updates from spawns we saw from the beginning. A time-lapse of the parents and their nests would be on our wish-list. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thanks for posting, I always love your videos. You are an amazing fishkeeper and a good person. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise isn't worth your thoughts or energy. Try to focus on all the people who make you feel like your favorite self. You've got this!

They’re all so cute!! Makes me super excited for when I finally get all set up to breed my own! I’ve definitely been taking my time preparing after watching all your betta videos. It has helped me tremendously in knowing what things to expect and how to go about it. I’m hoping my patience pays off well like yours has! 😊

Your doing great. I have been in this bisiness since 1983. Sadly covid killed my store that open for 17 years. I am way off in Alberta, Canada. It pains me when you are hard on yourself. Like you, I love fish like my children. I enjoy your contect it helps bring me somepeace. So Thankyou.
I really really like the first blue fish.. the offspring from the white and black betta.. they are kind of a black and blue mix that i find to be really attractive, great stuff!
Such beautiful fish, I'd love to have one like the little crowntails someday! They're all very lucky to have such a great caretaker. You're doing awesome, not just with the fish but also with the colors- I honestly would've never guessed you're colorblind (: The lavenders range from more pinkish to more bluish, but I'd say the average is definitely more of a lavender color.
I am about to take a shot at this.. I remember as kids, we had a tank, but I do not recall the outcome.. I'm retired and have plenty of time now.. thank you so much for your videos
Love your videos and your enthusiasm is awesome. Keep it up Nick. You are sometimes hard on yourself and you should know your dedication and energy is Amazing

They are definitely cool! Bugger about the black not being a dominant gene. I’ll try and get some black females

I really really like the first blue fish.. the offspring from the white and black betta.. they are kind of a black and blue mix that i find to be really attractive, great stuff!
I had a pair of bettas that had around 9 babies. They are all coloured and grow up
I really enjoyed this video. Amazing to see the progress they’ve made. Beautiful colors.
That last tank of bettas do look awesome. Keep doing what you love man.
Where is the update? I'd really like to figure out how these turned out. But I can't find it anywhere on your channel
Oh my gosh. So many made it!
Super informative! Definitely feel confident, motivated and inspired enough to take the plunge into breeding some cute small Fri!! THANK YOU!!
Haters will always find something to hate, but your loyal follower base remains unshaken! We support and rally for you. 🙌🌻
Love your clips, you're so very smart but it's the love u show for your fish that keeps me watching

I don’t own fish or even like them that much, but I have been binging your videos for hours. Amazing content. Keep up the great work!
Those betta babies at the end are gorgeous!
Wow, the lavender Bettas are so gourgous! ❤
