  • After getting pummeled in my last session working on foot switches, I decided to get a bit more focused in my approach. I found a series of exercises from Kitesurf College and the Progression video series (links below), and I set out to do each of them before trying foot switches again. They were hard, but they made me progress.

    Sweet....I don't think I paid much attention to this video a year ago as I hadn't started foiling. But now that I'm up and going on foil I'll be trying these moves out (when some wind arrives).

    Nice, I study from the same sources, cool to see your process applying it. It surprised me your on foil foot swap went well after your taxi foot swap didn't, looks like the exercises in between really helped. I have been trying on taxing and a few went well, haven't tried on the foil yet, and I haven't tried the ski stance and foot together drills yet.
    For me, what seems to be working best is
    1) pre-set the upper body pointing to the front of the board, to minimize movement after the swap
    2) have a shallower stance pre-swap, I set up my mast far ahead and the foot straps far behind
    3) Using lift from the kite
    4) I agree the land drills really helped, I think putting the front foot weight from toes to heel as you bring the back foot to the front also helps keeping the pressure point balanced on the board

      They definitely helped strengthen my balance and my board control, which then eventually helped me get the foot swap a few times. I'm still not at the point where I can get it consistently :)

    Just practicing this now. I like the tips! I have the same board/foil setup. Thanks for making this!

      I’m still practicing this :) was out in waves and just wasn’t comfortable foot switching under pressure… still so much to progress

      @@erbartlett do you have your mast on the foil in position A or B?

      @@FunWayRoundI think it make the setup rise up much faster / sooner? Could be helpful if your mounting holes are too far back, but otherwise it might not help anything

    An important point for me was not trying to switch my feet as fast as possible. It is not needed, it just makes the risk of mistakes higher (in my experience). Another key point for me was to pull the bar gradually directly after a calm pop, and just switch your feet while doing that without panicking. It is scary the first times because you think you will fall, but when you pull the bar in you just keep flying, time enough to switch your feet. Of course line tension is important. A slow climbing kite will help with that

      Very good advice!! Rushing definitely makes me fall more frequently. Great advice to move calmly , both with your feet and with your sheeting in.

      @hugovanderzee4944 Рік тому +1

      @@erbartlett Hope it helps. Once you feel that sheeting in keeps you flying for a while the foot change itself becomes more relaxed and controlled.

      @@hugovanderzee4944 I probably need to bring my kite up a bit faster to get more lift, I don't quite feel like I'm being carried calmly yet :)

    very nice vid, im very in the same point/level at foot switch as you (maybe 1-2 days back) ;). Will also keep try the pop, i think it´s the most common technique what i see so far.

    • @erbartlett
      @erbartlett  2 роки тому +1

      The pop is important but I think it’s pretty easy. I think the land drill with keeping your weight forward and the back foot lift are the most important for working on balance and they helped me the most

    None of it worked for me. Learning a basic Salsa step is more beneficial. Basically you are moving your feet without disturbing the hips while getting a bit of weightlessness from the kite and popping the board. Direction of board travel was very important for me. Most videos say upwind which is total BS. Maybe they meant upwind before turning slightly downwind, otherwise all those videos are dead wrong.

      As a dancer, I can relate to that. Thanks. I just got my Gybe down, but have yet to land a foot swap. Will try this.
