The ending alludes that Mrs Danvers set fire to Manderley, so Max and Mrs De Winter couldn't have their happy ending and it was how Rebecca "won." Mrs Danvers was always on Rebecca's side. I liked it, it was very subtle. And I do believe Rebecca was not actually a nice person. This is because of Ben. He comes across as this strange, not all there man, but his perspective reminds me that of a child's. They are just brutally honest and have an innocence to them. Ben had the same essence about him. He kept referencing that Rebecca wasn't a nice person and was a snake and that she had threatened to put him in an asylum. He was a scared of her and his character wasn't that of a conniving liar. I loved this book, gave it 5 stars.
