The Mai Tai that you get in Hawaii today is often far from the original Mai Tai brought to the islands in the 1950s by Trader Vic. When Trader Vic first introduced the Mai Tai to the Surf Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in 1953 the menu stated the drink was "made simply with fine old rums and fresh limes."
The pineapple and orange juice addition came later and is a much-unwelcomed addition to this iconic cocktail. I've had this drink before and didn't remember much of it. As I was making it for this video, I was open-minded to the idea that while it might not be an authentic 1944 Mai Tai, it would probably still be decent.
I was wrong.
And if you like this drink that's okay by me. I like pineapple juice and I like orange juice, but simply adding rum to juice doesn't taste good to me. I also love Coca-Cola on its own and enjoy rum on its own but together, another combo I don't care for.

The way they make the Mai Tai there it clearly has more than 1 oz of Dark Rum, which likely would improve both the balance and the flavor. And thanks for the shout-out.
You’re on a roll with these.
You hit the nail on the head! Whether you're at the Royal Hawaiian or Dukes, the drinks alway taste better when you're relaxing in Waikiki.
Damn it, Derek. You're the best. Thanks so much! My birthday month just got better!!
Hey me too www.tiktok.com/@soupygarbagejuice/video/7262802480197668142?lang=en&q=august%20birthday&t=1691447146207
I love your disdain for Hawaiian style mai tais 😂 I share the sentiment. Traditional is king
WHAT, “I MADE MY WOREST DRINK”…. Luv it when the presentation is HONEST!! 👍🏻
This series is awesome, thanks for all the work you're doing!
Our Mai Tai journey will have ups and down ... we can only go up from here. Thanks for keeping this necessary, evolutionary step nice and short. The good stuffs comin'.
We'll go lower
@@makeanddrink Oh my, you're making a $6 Mucho Mai Tai from Applebee's. Don't skimp on the gummy garnish.
Great series, Derek. Really enjoying it!
Love it. I've personally been trying to sift through Mai Tai recipes and have not landed one I have liked.
I frequently ask myself why do they always taste better at a bar?
Thank you for your efforts, consistency, delivery, & thoroughness!
Thank you!
By the end of the month there will be at least 5 recipes that will be solid ones worth trying.
Hey Derek, just wanted to mention how much I’ve been enjoying your videos! The Trader Vic Mai Tai is my favorite tiki drink and I’m very excited for this series…and even more excited that you got this one out of the way haha. Keep up the great work.
Awesome! Thank you. Trader Vic's will definitely be in the mix!
Can’t wait for the next Mai Tai videos
Looking forward to a “fix” for this fruit juice cocktail.
Hopefully I'll make it to Hawaii before I die and if I have to drink a hundred of these to get there so be it
Agreed 100%. It’s hideous. Everything you said is spot on! Just found your channel and… Great videos!
Keep em comin
Appreciate the honest opinion even when you don't fancy it. Never had one of those, but looking at recipe, I won't make it :D
Hey there Derek! I just wanted to let you know that I did this recipe for my wife but used Denizen Merchant's reserve (it was all I had) for the dark rum and shook it in with the rest of the ingredients. It actually turned out really well! Perhaps experimenting around with the rums might make this turn out more appealing for you.
Fool me once, shame on you... Fool me twice...
I'm curious, knowing you have a copy of Tropical Standard, how their Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai, would contrast to this recipe. It's on page 180. Keep up the great work!!
the TS Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai has it's own video!
Can't wait for the one with Amaretto - always wondered why that came to be, assuming a sub for bars that don't want to sub orgeat
Congrats on 5k subscribers, can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thank you!
I juuuust made the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai (Tropical Standard Specs) for the 3rd time…I think I know what‘s coming ;)
Spoiler alert. Jeeze!

My 1% Acid Adjuster is poised and ready.
Please fix ASAP! I saw those 2 oz of pineapple and 1 orange and was immediately suspicious...
It seems like this version is unfortunately the one that is ubiquitous in average bars - way too sweet and unbalanced. Looking forward to the next one when you fix it. I'm sensing some acid adjustment coming with improved proportions.
The Total Tiki app lists the Royal Hawaiian as also having lime, lemon juice, and 3 total oz of rum. It’s still not a Mai Tai, but I actually think it’s a pretty solid drink.
Yeah there are several Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai’s that have “evolved” over the years and this recipe is the official one from the Mai Tai Bar at least as of now. But wouldn’t be surprised if they change it again someday.
I sometimes wonder if some of these hotels hire bartenders and sit them in a dark room under a bright light and tell them they have to make BAD drinks. Ugh... The horror.
Fully true, On paper it looks not bad but I also found it quite disappointing
Maybe if it was called something different like a “Royal Hawaiian” it would taste better. Psychological effect kinda thing.
I think other people will like it just fine. I honestly don't have a sophisticated pallet, but drinks that use juices, soda, etc to mask the booze I cannot stand. And it's weird because I like juices and soda on their own, just not juice and booze.
That drink sounds like every bad mai tai ever made.
It’s missing the Grenadine and Amaretto but it’s pretty egregious.
Can you even call the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai a Mai Tai??? 😂😂😂
I don’t understand. The the drink should literally be just rums and lime juice. That’s it!
The Tropical Standards Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai is the only one I make anymore. Retains the original flavor of the Mai Tai, even with the pineapple. The original is trash.
😂👎.
My first Mai Tai was a “batch” made Mai Tai at the Waikola Village on The Big Island of Hawaii and it was delicious.
Everything tastes better in Hawaii. And one of the best Mai Tai's I've made is from just 2 hotels over from the Royal Hawaiian.
@@makeanddrink You have the Key to a great Mai Tai. Looking forward to it.
Pineapple juice doesn't belong in a Mai Tai. It's awful.
