Drivers continue illegally parking on greenway in Queens

- Months ago, CBS New York first reported on a greenway in Queens that was taken over by illegally parked cars. Authorities say they took steps to address the problem, but has it helped? CBS New York's Elle McLogan reports from Long Island City.

Vehicle has to have parking ticket first before getting legally towed. No ticket, no tow. That space is not (impeding) private property either so you can't just get a cop to write a ticket.

wrong, all those cars parked there are housing resident vehicles. if you know that area you know its hard to find parking.

If parking is that bad in the area why hasn't part of the solution to the problem been to make more areas for legal parking? Not condoning illegal parking but the lack of parking has been a problem for NYC since skyscrapers started going up.
People aren't going to pay 500$ a month to park in a garage.
Queensbridge got soft. Those cars would not park there in the 90s.
4 tow trucks can solve the problem real fast - and make major money for the city.
The first image they showed is a car with no plates, meaning its likely not even registered. Its not difficult to imagine there are many others like it, or they simply have fake or stolen plates.
These people wont try to retrieve their cars, costing the city money to park them over the obligatory period theyre held.
Until a cop's personal car is towed. Or a local city councilman. Or a Karen with a politician husband. Or a tow truck driver is assaulted because he tows my car but leaves all the cars with MTA and NYPD vests on the dashboard. Orchard Beach went through something similar and it was clear the tow drivers were discriminating like crazy.

They problem is that's the City property which means towing those cars isn't that simple.
start towing,especially the ones with no plates,then it's just a storage yard,charge for storage as well.

Put a $100 ticket on the windshield to warn them. If they still do it, tow it and fine them $10000. Sounds harsh? Then don't do it.

@@AlphaQHard Cars with no plates that seemingly never get towed or stopped are likely Police driving unregistered cars or city workers with connections. In NYC you can't drive more than 10 feet with no license before the cops pull you over. You really think a regular nobody can park an unregistered vehicle in an illegal spot in a PARK and not get it towed? Come on buddy...... be real here.

This is what happens when you register anyone and overcrowd a location. NYC gets what it votes for.
How about just start issuing tickets? Repeat offenders automatically get double fine. Keep doing it and have them all towed at owner expenses. There is easy money to be made here and they wishy washy about it here. 🤦
Could use a fence around the bike lane but emergency vehicles have it as a pathway when 41st Ave is clogged. Depending on the owners of those vehicles, Mayor Adams could have send them all to the Tow Pound and ask questions later.
That would hurt Adams and the local City Councilman politically. 90% chance these cars belong to cops or city workers. Nowhere in NYC can you park illegally anywhere, let alone on GRASS in a PARK and not be towed within a few hours. These drivers are connected somehow. Look how one of the cars have no plates. The drivers are connected.

This is what happens when parking is virtually impossible to find in nyc.. NYC will keep building everywhere, but that never includes parking. Does that make sense? So what do you expect? Where are people supposed to park??
There’s no parking in the city nyc , we are overrun with chaos of e-bikes, bike lanes random barricades, outdoor dining. What’s the point of living here if we can’t even park in our own community.

I'm all for greenways and bike lanes but they need to stop taking away parking spaces and limiting parking! Over here where I live they removed the fire hydrants from the non parking side and placed them on the parking side taking up many parking spots. There's low traffic streets with no parking on one side for absolutely no reason! And people really need to stop being bootlickers to government...smh.. New York city does not have the adequate infrastructure or planning competence to force a "greener" future

We need parking for trucks and vans, we do not need parking for personal vehicles. Cars are greatly inefficient at transporting a large number of people. What I can probably say is those cars are probably stolen. There is a same problem at some highway exits in Brooklyn with seemingly abandoned cars in the shoulder.

If the city made parking more available and more affordable people wouldn’t need to resort to this. Do you think all those people want to risk getting a ticket? Some, maybe, not all.
They should make it vertical parking and shorten the greenway. These housing developments have a ton of grassland space. There would still be plenty of green. Why not shorten it so more cars can fit? People living there likely just have 1 or 2 cars and one car is at a parking space anyway.
