The main reason the flats died out was because, they had opened alot of rap clubs down there, and during closing time there were lots if race related fights and problems, people started going up the hill to west 6th street, kind of a white flight. Then that area eventually got bad, so they are now on west 4th street, these are facts....
It went to crap when thy put that RTA transit down there. Ppl were coming downtown o the rapid and leaving with a car of their choosing. I was really sad.
The flats became a tug of war for land. Thats what killed it. You had many investors wanting to build and the city wanted them to jump through hoops. To the point they no longer wanted to invest. Now on the west side of the flats its abandoned buildings and unfinished demolition. The flats shouldve stayed a place to party, not live. We had enough liveable spaces up on W.9th , W.6th , and W. 3rd just to name a few. Seriously every historic building for the most part thats still standing has apartments in it. Plus they are pricey as hell
I work down on the west bank in was once the Mirage but is now a doggy daycare. When cleaning out the building to get it ready a picture of Snoop Dog was found and we keep it hanging on the wall. I tell people it was a sign that the place was meant to be for the dogs. We still have the disco balls up.
Even before the '80s, the Flats were a fun nightlife spot. Back in the 70s, the bars were smaller, but each one was unique, each had its own vibe and type of music: jazz, bluegrass, folk, etc. People used to bar crawl there before the term was even invented. I moved from Cleveland in the 70s, but visited often afterwards. For decades, Cleveland businessmen worked with city government to rejuvenate downtown. Has that all over too?
Don't forget The Mirage on the West Bank!!! That is where all of the Soul, R&B, Hip Hop and Sports Stars from out of town came to party!! Missy Elliott, Puffy, Mike Tyson, Tommy Hearns, TLC are just a few of the celebrities that frequent the Mirage back in the day!!!!
jeez the backround music is way to loud i worked at Fagans from 86 to 91 the politicians destroyed the flats trying to land grab and it failed miserably
Whoever did this video was either NOT from Cleveland or too YOUNG to remember this. That bar with the peace sign was NOT "A Groovy Bar"..... It was Have A Nice Day Cafe!!! If there's anything Clevelanders hate most, it's people who are not from here, or too young to remember how things used to be, trying to tell stories as if they were here or do remember them.
Peabody's DownUnder, Pat's in the Flats, The Odeon (was still there but last I was downtown, but not the club it was) The Flats was an amazing place to be young and dumb, but maybe it's best that it has changed. "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life" ...

We used to race cars under the Detroit Ave bridge in the early 70's. Then in the late 80's, I came back to visit relatives for a wedding. Hell, in the late 60's, the Cuyahoga River caught fire because it was so polluted 🤪

The most awesome thing about Cleveland is how all their roads prioritize horrible looking telephone lines and extremely ugly colored masonry buildings with off-tan concrete sidewalks. Cleveland believes in bringing heavy industry into the pedestrian experience just in case anyone was in danger of thinking any zone would be created for enjoyability.
Being new to Cleveland this was very helpful in learning more about Cleveland's past. Thanks!
I did gigs in every venue on Old River Road in the '80s. As usual, city hall couldn't leave it alone. Nice job, you twerps.
Facts! They always messing up something
This was really well done! Thanks for posting it!
Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks!!!

I remember when the mirage was in Strongsville on rat 82. It was so fun until it moved to the flats.
Update: the Flats is Bumpin' again!!!
It is nice but not the same... those days will never come back besides young people these days rather stay home making TikTok

As a child of this era- I can confirm my brother came home with a new chick every night. They were great morning talkers too. :)

From his voice, he was not around in the '80's.
Have a Nice Day Cafe was my favorite of all the bars back then.
We enjoyed your video but could not hear what you were saying for much of the video. The music drowned your words out!

I did that "journey" (worst word ever, btw) back in the 80's. Thanks for the video, but the music is horrid.
You mean on Quigly?
Badly done music! It periodically gets so loud you can't hear the narration. So irritating

Yeah it is not a place for white liberals from suburbia.
What?
Peabody's Downunder
Once people move out , they will not come back . Go figure !
Going down to the flats, gonna mingle with the river rats!
it was vivacious
we need law and order in Cleveland. a strong Republican mayor.

Last republican mayor was Voinovich. My Mom voted for him. We moved to the suburbs after White won in '89.
