Cleveland flats documentary 1980s (2022 version)
Переглядів 16 тис.2 роки тому
This video documents the buildings on the East side of the flats during the late 90s. The flats were a big part of my life in the 80s. Great memories during my 20s here. Hope you enjoy the video. There was another version of this that I took down a few months ago because of copyright issues on Music. Here’s the new revision O The website shown in the video is here: www.city-data.com/forum/clev...

I attended school there Jan - Feb 1982. I recently found some 8mm film and spliced it in with some footage I found on here.
Grid N Orbit Night club in Cleveland Ohio
Переглядів 5 тис.14 років тому
At one time the top 3 largest Night club in Cleveland. The club had multiple rooms and levels. The club showcased Djs and entertainment from all over. It had a 7 plus year or longer run. One day in October of 2008 the doors just closed. No workers or anyone was informed. It is still a mystery why this club closed.

A Great club. Footage shot in 1999 on New Years Eve.. The girls were always wild there. The club closed down after many years of being open in the mid to late 2000's. Of course I got fired because they were going toward rap in the late 90s and I wanted to stay towards house. I DJ'd there for 6 Years and ended Up Djing in the City.

So very sad. I attended in 1992. My cousin Kim and I went together from NY. Our roomate was from Maine and she ended up going home after a couple weeks. I remember the rooms and the main lobby. Thank you for sharing this video.

I appreciated this video. I graduated in 1990, wow. It rook me down memory lane. Reminded me of how hot it was and we had to wear suits almost everyday. I'm currently a retired Persian Gulf Veteran. Thanks and Salute. Btw, the only teacher I remember is Mrs. Prasse.

I work down on the west bank in was once the Mirage but is now a doggy daycare. When cleaning out the building to get it ready a picture of Snoop Dog was found and we keep it hanging on the wall. I tell people it was a sign that the place was meant to be for the dogs. We still have the disco balls up.

The main reason the flats died out was because, they had opened alot of rap clubs down there, and during closing time there were lots if race related fights and problems, people started going up the hill to west 6th street, kind of a white flight. Then that area eventually got bad, so they are now on west 4th street, these are facts....

I worked there as a bartender in the early to mid-90s. It's nice to see some familiar faces. The bouncer, Jerry, who flips off the camera in the beginning, flipped everyone off. Some people say "hello" when they greet you. Jerry, on the other hand, would flip you the bird. 🤣

The flats became a tug of war for land. Thats what killed it. You had many investors wanting to build and the city wanted them to jump through hoops. To the point they no longer wanted to invest. Now on the west side of the flats its abandoned buildings and unfinished demolition. The flats shouldve stayed a place to party, not live. We had enough liveable spaces up on W.9th , W.6th , and W. 3rd just to name a few. Seriously every historic building for the most part thats still standing has apartments in it. Plus they are pricey as hell

Even before the '80s, the Flats were a fun nightlife spot. Back in the 70s, the bars were smaller, but each one was unique, each had its own vibe and type of music: jazz, bluegrass, folk, etc. People used to bar crawl there before the term was even invented. I moved from Cleveland in the 70s, but visited often afterwards. For decades, Cleveland businessmen worked with city government to rejuvenate downtown. Has that all over too?

Whoever did this video was either NOT from Cleveland or too YOUNG to remember this. That bar with the peace sign was NOT "A Groovy Bar"..... It was Have A Nice Day Cafe!!! If there's anything Clevelanders hate most, it's people who are not from here, or too young to remember how things used to be, trying to tell stories as if they were here or do remember them.

We used to race cars under the Detroit Ave bridge in the early 70's. Then in the late 80's, I came back to visit relatives for a wedding. Hell, in the late 60's, the Cuyahoga River caught fire because it was so polluted 🤪

The most awesome thing about Cleveland is how all their roads prioritize horrible looking telephone lines and extremely ugly colored masonry buildings with off-tan concrete sidewalks. Cleveland believes in bringing heavy industry into the pedestrian experience just in case anyone was in danger of thinking any zone would be created for enjoyability.
