- Why didn’t the Vizards use Hollow Masks during BLEACH’s Thousand Year Blood War arc? In this video I explore why the Vizards were underutilised within the TYBW arc, and how this may have played a part in them not using their hollow masks. We will discuss multiple reasons behind why the Vizards didn’t hollowfy, and what is the current state of their hollow power in BLEACH.

I was so hyped when it was revealed that hollowfication would prevent bankai from being stolen because obviously the visords would be a huge asset.....
But then that "would" turned into a "could"
The fact that they didn't lift the ban for the war speaks alot...Because they used AIZEN...who created them as an asset. If I can as a Vizard I would have said fuck the rules at this point lol 😂
They’re just incompetent
It would have been a phenomenal way to bridge the gap in the third invasion instead of having Urahara almost immediately eliminate the bankai plundering threat.
Instead of having the captains go through their respective trainings to fight without bankai only to almost immediately get them back, we could have had the initial phase of the invasion where Kisuke reveals that they can’t handle hollow reiatsu, he’s “working on” the pills but they’re not ready yet, so in the meantime the vizards have a center stage opportunity as the only fighters able to use their bankai. The rest of the captains are fighting with their new training, they still struggle, and then eventually they still get their bankais back. But this way we avoid having the too many cooks in the kitchen issue, the heroes get subdivided into sections of the invasion. At first the vizards are center stage, then as they wear down and get their fights in the other captains get the pills to safely use their bankais and are able to reinforce the frontlines.
I just never quite liked how bod a deal it was to lose their bankais only for that plot point to get dropped nearly immediately into the next conflict.

Honestly I always imagined it was a pride thing. When the vizards were first introduced they made it quite clear that they were not soul reapers and were not affiliated with the gotei 13, they were vizards, something completely different. So when they were finally able to join back as captains they kept that distinction and abandoned that thing that made them vizards since they were now soul reapers again, except for mashiro who's always been a loose canon and probably doesn't care.
Agree but the problem is the seireitei is getting taken over by foe’s that are world ending strong and their weakness is hollows so they should put their pride to the side for that

Missed opportunity. As soon as we found out that Quincies were “allergic” to bankais with hollow elements, would have been a great opportunity to reveal the vizord’s resurrection

@@Nefata Not particularly, Ichigo's Hollowfication is drastically different from the Vizards' Hollowfication. The Vizard are Soul Reapers that were just burdened with Hollow Reatsu, whereas Ichigo was born with it, so anything Ichigo does can just be put to what White (Zangetsu) can do
The “Vizards” were supposed to be stronger than all other captains in terms of raw strength and reiatsu (especially the captain level Vizards) because they crossed the limits of Shinigami, what Aizen wanted to do. They should have at the very least be on par with the top Espada, who were basically Hollows with Shinigami powers. It’s sad how they were treated.
Exactly they had aizen talking about hollowfication being the *only* way to transcend a shinigamis limits only to have all the vizards weaker than the top espadas and some other full fledged captain shinigamis

Kubo messed up this little point here too. Especially with how hollow stuff is bad news for quincys and couldve turned the war early on

You're overthinking it my guy. Unlike Ichigo, they can’t use their Bankai and hollowfication simultaneously. For Ichigo, he was already a hybrid being that had his hollow powers mixed with his Zanpakto. The vizard could eventually get to this point, but for some odd reason be it pride or bad writing they never did.
I like this idea but the main problem with this is that shinji did not use his mask and he was basically always in shikai cause of what his bankai is.
ichigo's hollow powers *are* his zanpakuto. the vizards being discarded "mock arrancars" would never be able to reach such natural attunement between their hollow and zanpakuto spirit
It makes perfect sense, the vizards are a failed experiment by aizen. Ichigo could do it not because it's just his zanpakto but Ichigo was a successful result of aizen's experiment.
It wasn't because they didn't want to or because they were forbidden from doing so, but because they couldn't. Kubo revealed in Klub Outside that due to the Vizards' Inner Hollows being not native to their Shinigami powers, they weren't able to utilize Bankai and Hollowfication simultaneously. They'd be drawing too deeply on two separate powers, and wouldn't be able to focus their powers properly. As Hollow Zangetsu is a Hollowfied Zanpakuto natively, Ichigo had no problem with it. So, you're theory on that is why lol.
He did also reveal that with enough training, they'd be able to do it with no problems, as well as even attain a Ressureccion like Tosen did if any of them wanted to go that route.
Yeah I didn't even have to click yet and knew this about the vizards not being able to do that. They could in hell arc however

Yeah it really sucks considering how cool Shinji is and how broken his Shikai and Bankai are alone, and then you add the hollow boost *ON TOP* of that. It was sweet that we got to see his Bankai finally cannonized though

I think it was in the novel, where Shinji first used his Bankai, that he mentioned that "Sakanade does everything backwards", referring to how his Shikai is more effective against single, stronger opponents, and his Bankai, on the other hand, is fore effective against groups of weaker enemies. Wouldn't make much sense for him to use his Bankai against Bambietta.
It could be because the quincy holy arrows delete hollows from existence so if they hollowfy maybe they could get deleted
The arrows delete souls, (it's why the Shinigami tried to delete them) it's just until the TYBW the ones being shot were hollows that some people forget that
Quincy arrows didnt seem to be particularly effective against Ulquiorras wings.

Plus with ichigo he's a substitute soul reaper. He's not a official member of soul society. Anytime they've asked ichigo for help it's never been from an official capacity.
I get the feeling that Kubo was in such a rush to end the series, that he left out the most.
That’s confirmed, although it’s not quite that he was in a rush as it is that he was having lots of health issues and the publishers wouldn’t let him take a hiatus so he had no choice but to rush plot points instead of fleshing them out better, and dropping points entirely.
Luckily with the new anime he’s getting a chance to redo the story, for example the far improved squad zero fights in the anime compared to the manga

If Kubo wants to retcon the hollow captains' involvement, I'd be down for it. I was really hoping to see them use their hollow masks along with their bankai when the manga was still being released, but I was sorely disappointed.
I think the reason is pretty simple in their respective fight they were winning pretty handedly until they weren’t without they’re masks.They lose suddenly and without warning so they didn’t have time to activate them
I really wish that one of the vizards was included in the origional bankai steal. And for it to have not worked for them as well as ichigo, it would have really been a cooler way for fans to be able to work out why, plus would give better reasoning to kisikes realisation on the cause. Plus it woulda been cool if it was revealed shinji survived the bambieta explosion because he hollowfied

In kensei's fight against Wonderweis, he activated bankai but didn't use his mask.
So its possible that they cant do both together. 👍

Kubo did say it was possible for the vizard to use mask and bankai and they can even get resurrection and use that together with bankai
It could also be that to use hollow powers, they need to be able to pull in Hollow reshi, which would be absent in Yhwach's realm for obvious reasons. Meaning the Vizards couldn't hollowfy during the war for not having the right kind of energy/fuel to power the hollow masks and thus had to rely on what they had naturally.
I will never forget Kensei's hollowfication. The way he broke from Hachi's high level Bakudos hyped me up and I love the way he looks with that Military dude get up. He could be a Hakuda expert based on how his zanpakuto works.

Honestly I think it's even simpler. I think that in shinjis case there's really no point to combining his mask and bankai as buffing his base stats would be irrelevant to the effect either way. That may go for rose too. As for kensei, I think he may have used it if he got the chance, but he was defeated before he could.
The reason is actually far more simple.
It is true that using Hollow Raiatsu against the Quincy would give them a serious advantage HOWEVER that also goes the other way around. Quincys obliberate Hollow Raiatsu and when a Vizard in Hollowfication gets hit by a Quincy its equaly as deadly as a Vizard hitting a Quincy. So in truth the Vizards dont have an advantage here at all. In fact they are outnumbered and landing a deadly blow on a Vizard is far more likely then the other way around.
So they didnt use it because they knew its not in their favor.
I think I said this on a different channel, but my theory is: their masks were sealed by the central 46. Think of it as similar to how the captain class and lieutenant class shinigami had their powers limited via seals during the arancar arc. Only difference is that, this time it's only limited to the captain class and that they were not given the method of releasing the seal. Some might think "well they could probably just say release and unlock the seal right?" That's like using only one password or keys on all the locks on your doors. And maybe you are thinking "Then why didn't they ask for permission?" 1.) I think at the moment Kyoraku is the only one capable of contacting central 46 and 2.) Even if they did get permission by the time they realized they needed their masks, there wasn't enough time for confirmation.
To me, the proposition that Central 46 placed an injunction upon the Visored Captains _seems_ logically consistent, given their overall paranoia regarding exceptional beings... but you aptly state that eventually, the bureau indeed does permit Aizen a kind of probationary(( and limited/restricted)) liberty expressly for facing Yhwach.
I myself, am inclined to believe that Central 46 did indeed impose the injunction, _BUT,_ after the slaying of Captains Kensei Muguruma and Rōjūrō Otoribashi, I believe that the bureau may have recinded that specific injunction... because they _finally_ realized that _not only is the Soul Society in a state of emergency -- war! -- but All of Existence was in dire threat of annihilation!_
Overall, I feel that Central 46 seems to behave as ponderous, disconnected((out-of-touch)) bureaucracies often do -- obdurate to the point of irrationally intractible, _until/unless_ there's a bona fide existential threat, wherein _finally_ they start being pragmatic...
I most definitely thought Shenji was going to Bankai while Hollowfied in this fight🤷🏽🫠
I have a theory for at least shinji and rose for it being that since they're illusions, they cant really be strengthened by hollow power, especially shinjis. Obviously this doesnt explain kensei but a second part is that if a vizard were to lose control they could run rampant and an uncontrolled captain using bankai and extra power would be devastating, especially with a banned bankai or indiscriminate illusions like shinjis and roses respectively

Lets keep it real, the reason they weren't allowed to use their masks is because they'd be too strong for most Quincy's.
Imagine if Kensei and Rose stacked their mask on top of their bankai, you really think they would have lost?
And Shinji would probably be a threat to every person in Soul Society if he did the same lmao.
You would think after learning the Quincy have issues with hollow riatsu, they would lean in with that. What if their version of Cero would be an issue for the Quincy or something? Knowing they aren’t actually giving their 100% is kind of silly now that I think about it.

One idea I’ve had is that what if using the mask and bankai would run the risk of them losing control of their inner hollow?
I remember reading bleach manga weekly as it was coming out ever since Soul Society arc concluded. The answer, I think, is much simpler and a combination of these two things:
1. The fact that bleach manga was being concluded was written all over the manga as tywb arc was just getting started.
2. Kubo has very clearly said, that he got into manga to draw cool stuff.
Most of vizards didn't show their bankais during aizen saga, and considering the "cool potential" of bankai vs hollowfication - bankai is clearly the winner. Hence Kubo decided to end manga in the way he loved to do it in the beginning.
I feel like they just got done dirty, or Kibe forgot. Time frames, especially older ones, are silly in Bleach now - since originally wasn't Ichigo supposed to be going so fast, that his bones would break under the pressure of the air? That literally was mentioned as a "limitation" to his Bankai, and forgotten in the same sentence, lol. So, the 3min thing is probably no go. It comes down to Kibe forgot, or we didn't have enough screen time, which is lame - they should get some screentime; Shinji shouldn't get chumped by a Quincy.
Whoa you're right! I never noticed that those that returned to soul society didn't brought out their mask during the tybw! No wonder Rose and Kensei got bodied so bad by Mask de Masculine.
That was always my head canon. Don't know if that was the case why it couldn't have been addressed in a single thought bubble 😅
So I think on order for them to find peace within themselves and prolong the time of using their hollow masks they would have to accept the fact that they are both hollows and shinigami
It could be that Yamamoto had that as a condition for them coming back to the gotei 13. However…. I think if the anime changes stuff we’ll see them pushed to the brinks near death and shinsui go “vizards, Those rules were under Yama you know….” And that is him giving the green light to Hollowfy 👍
also we haven't seen ichigo hollow mask in a very long time so in one way you could say it would feel out of place if they did use hollow masks in thousand year blood war because its been ages since the hollow mask's were used.
I think somewhere in cfyow shinji was planning to use the hollow mask when grimmjow went to soul society
In war set up it's make sense that Visords Cpts. choose to not use Hollowfications. Unlike small battles are in short match up like in Fake Karakura where they were (thought that)serve as reinforcement to close out the fight, The war set up is a cumulative of battles after battles. All In, All Out on the very first battles is not a great plan. "Just Win This Fight" does not enough anymore.

Honestly the more I think about it...wouldn't Shinji, Kensei and Rose be immune to the bankai stealing because they're vizards? Or perhaps it only works if their bankai itself is hollofied like Toshiro's.
After all Aizen called them failed experiments and maybe the short time limited due to fatigue after hollowfication is a result as their body unconsciously trying to fight back against the hollow spirit trying to gain control over them
Good question. About 0:40 was this fight left out of the animation or something. I have not read the manga that far.

I always thought that because they were in position of power they didnt use their hollow powers in front of their men. Just to set an example of being a good Shinigami soldier. Thats why Mashiro went to the outskirts and only then used her powers there. Its why i think the other Visored didnt stay and were freely using their masks whenever they wanted to. It was probably a ban and maybe even a silent pact of some kind to not use those powers.

what if, when they hollowfy; after it ends for a short period of time, their hollowifcation abilities are not there so the chance to steal a bankai is possible again

Sarugaki Hiyori, Muguruma Kensei, Yadoumaru Lisa and Hirako Shinsi are my favourite Vizards, defienitily Hiyori and Kensei. I liked how Kensei and Hirako become to Soul Society Gotei 13 Captains in Bleach TYBW and they've got much more screen-time like Kensei and Shinji, it was really an interesting to see Shinji's bankai in TYBW Cour 2. It's interesting how Aizen changed Vizards to Hollow with the White Bleach substance, but Aizen didin't said what it is because they don't need to know what Hollow masks are, screw you Aizen. I liked how Vizards helped Ichigo and now they're Captains. I only want to see more screen-time with my favourite the most Cutest and Fastest Vizard Hyiori in TYBW Cour 3. It's weird Vizards have the Hollow masks, but they are BANNED to use those, why? Well that video will tell that for us. Can't wait i'm so excited for Bleach TYBW Cour 3 and Aizen "The Chair-Sama's return". That video will be so awesome like your every Bleach videos are because Bleach is the Number One Anime! 😊❤
I think is the principal or honor the idea of reapers vs quincy.
And lets be honest with the mad scientist Mayuri would have done some research on them and have solutions for them to weaken or improve them when the moment was needed.

Im hoping and praying that this is one of the major changes in Cour 3 because Shinji and Rose STILL got done dirty in the anime.

idk how much to believe that Shinji and the others would give up their masks for something that they despised for a long period while they were in the living world. it could be that they felt responsible as former captains to take the lead again, but to not use their masks because of that? idk.
Mashi can be a hollow for days on end and could leave her mask on 15 hours from the start without training

What if the visord captains were having the same problems that Ichigo had, if the were hollowfied with experiments don't u think that the hollowfication experiment that aizen tested on them would have changed their soul somehow giving rise to a new entity in their souls and since a zanpakuto is a representation of a person's soul and the hollow is part of their soul now their zanpakuto spirit and hollow spirit are fighting for who will be the centre of power so on other not to give their hollow side the advantage they are suppressing their hollow powers which are becoming more and more powerful the more the captains themselves become powerful

They can't all be main characters. TYBW has been kinda rushed. If this was One-Piece we'd still be in the Soul Society arc crying about the loss of Orihime's brother.😅

I find it naive that the central 46 would ban the visord captains from using their hollow masks because wouldn't it have maybe saved the society from most of the quincy's and help change the tide of battle.
Maybe its a double edged sword situation where the drawbacks of hollow masks leave them too vulnerable to make the benefits worth the risk?

1. Ayon is a creation and therefore technically not a real hollow. Just a mass of reishi no different from the ground and walls that quincys also absorb

It's not like the masks would have made any difference. Ichigo was like a thousand times stronger than the Vaizards when he had a Fullbring infused Bankai that failed to defeat Kirge on its own.
I actually think that kubo did a mess and made the vizards and hollow masks too strong. So he just "forget" to use their powers when clearly there was all the motivations to use it, even ichigo should have used it!

He doesn’t need to because his hollow powers merged into his base…at least that’s what is implied via his new bankai in the TYBW arc. Also his fullbringer shikai…it just seems like the hollow side merged perfectly with the shinigami powers

Wasn't the vizards able to use therir holow masks for hours becaus they tryed to increes Ichigos time and one of them coud alreddy use it for like 15-18 hours from the start.
