    Fun fact about the "aim at waist height", but for the Finnish in WWII a common battle cry for machine gunners was “Tulta munille!” which translates to "Fair at their balls"
    So the last thing a Russian soldier freezing to death in Finland might have heard was a crazy Finn commander ordering his machine gunners to aim for his balls.

    I've looked into it: Incendiary weapons are technically not banned by the Geneva Convention, it's just that their use against civilians is punishable by Court Marshal, and with most combat being done in insurgency these days, it's virtually impossible to use incendiaries as anti-personnel without violating multiple treaties and rules-of-engagement. So, they're instead relegated to strictly anti-material. If you're in the unique situation where you know for a fact that all casualties will be enemy combatants, you are sill technically allowed to light 'em up like it's Nam.

    The PIAT is such a dumb-smart weapon. It worked with the mechanical style of a crossbow using basic physics to propel it instead of more conventional rocketry. It's a handheld mortar for shooting tanks, that relies on a spring instead of a typical bullet or rocket mechanism. British engineering during the second world war was.... suspect to say the least but still damn impressive in the crazy things they came up with. No, there's no treaties banning the use of incendiary weapons against personnel. Flamethrowers the US unilaterally retired from use in the 70s, napalm is legal and they just use different names for it because "napalm" has Vietnam-era PR issues (I think you're thinking of Agent Orange regarding long-term issues, napalm is basically just instant jelly powder and gasoline) and WP is fine to use against infantry, there's just a special exemption where you _can_ use smoke and signal rounds near concentrations of civilians even if they have an "incidental incendiary effect."

    Actually the M4 Sherman and several other American tanks of WW2 did have vertical gyrostabilizers that worked at low speeds, for the M4 it was around 15mph, with debatable usefulness, ranging from being accurate enough to shoot on the move, to only being stable enough to keep the gun pointed while on the move. Most tankers were not well trained in its use, and some did not like using it and disabled it. Most other tanks of WW2 did not have them.

      It’s also worth noting that a lot of early-war or pre-war tanks had main guns small enough to just be equipped with a shoulder stock and elevated manually by the gunner, which made them easier to keep on target while moving than something where you’d have to be constantly spinning a wheel to keep the elevation on target. I know the Japanese definitely did this with their 37mm guns, and I think the British did with their 2 pounder as well, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was done with a lot of other low caliber guns.

He was one of the few teachers I actually respected as a person as well as an authority figure, and he genuinely cared about every individual person in his class and wanted us all to succeed. I have a vivid memory of him walking into class on monday after a weekend-long training exercise of some kind, and telling us that as frustrating as we could be as a class sometimes, we were still better behaved than some Lieutenants he had to deal with. Fun fact: The M4 Sherman, a mass produced tank from the US in the early 40's did have a stabilizer, along with other tanks from other countries like the British Crusader. The caveat though, is that they only stabilized vertically not horizontally, and they only worked up to a certain speed.

  • @JainZar1
    @JainZar1 2 роки тому +93

    Regarding the stabilizers: "The Sherman, like its M3 predecessor, was one of the first tanks to feature a gyroscopically stabilized gun and sight. The stabilization was only in the vertical plane; the mechanism could not slew the turret. The stabilizer was sufficient to keep the gun's elevation setting within 1/8th of a degree, or 2 mils, while crossing moderately rough terrain at 15 miles per hour (24 km/h). This gave a hit probability of 70% on enemy tanks at ranges of 300 yards (270 m) to 1,200 yards (1,100 m). - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_Sherman
    So they had stabilizers, but they weren't that good for firing on the move. The time for the entire: Full stop, Fire, Move. Was greatly reduced though, since you could skip the target reacquisition step.

    M4 Sherman tanks did have a stabilizer but it was not advanced enough to allow moving and shooting. It did give them a huge edge in that the gunners didn't have to adjust for every bump in motion before dialing in the sights though so they could move, stop, fire within seconds, then start moving again.

    'Shaped charge and a spring?'
    Yes, the PIAT (Projector Infantry Anti-Tank) is an anti-tank weapon design based on the Spigot Mortar system. But unlike a conventional mortar, the massive firing pin is propelled forward by a massive spring, with simultaneously arms the charge and help launch it forward, the force of the propellant charge being enough to re-prime the spring for a follow-up shot once reloaded (as the spring was notoriously difficult to cock when the weapon wasn't prepared for combat)
    The arc of the HEAT round it fired being quite effective, until the germans started putting spaced armor on their vehicles, which defeated the shaped charge rather handily. Also it suffered from reliability issues as all quickly-researched weapons tend to do

    Those grenades you were talking about where most likely thermite grenades which are used to disable machines and weaponry like artillery pieces. Thermite burns at over 4000 degrees Fahrenheit which is why it is also used to cut/melt through metals like steel. Thermite works by a chemical process between metal powders and oxides to create extremely high temperatures. Strange fact: the manufacturing of thermite is generally not illegal in the US because of it’s uses in industry such the welding of railroad tracks via thermite welding.

    14:31 Yes. The PIAT was developed by the British, and used a compressed spring to launch its projectiles. The lack of any smoke when firing made it great for ambushes, as you could fire from indoors. And the you could re-cock the weapon by lying on your back, holding the muzzle end in your hands and pushing the other end with your feet.

    The remark about the KAR98 shooting down the plane reminded me of a WWI story. Large bore elephant rifles had begun being produced, and several shipments of them were sent out to the Brits fighting in the war. These are BIG guns, right? Like, .500 Nitro Express rounds. This one officer had his, and he used it to shoot down three (THREE) biplanes. He just led appropriately, fired, and a second later down it goes, "like a pheasant." Fired the second shot, got the next one, and had time to reload and get the third, which also spun out and crashed. Crazy stuff.

    The thing about the PIAT was that it was essentially a weaponized nerf gun, in the sense that it used a big spring that the operator had to tension by themselves, which when fired pushed a rod into the base of the round, which due to the mass and speed of said rod launched the shaped-charge at whatever it was aimed at. However, there were a few problems with the design, such as recoil impact harming soldiers even when properly handled, poor range, and the spring being unreliable.

  • @anzaca1
    @anzaca1 2 роки тому

    19:29 The M4 Sherman did have a gyro-stabiliser, but all it did was allow the gun to remain aimed at a target will the tank was moving. The tank still had to stop moving to fire, but the stabiliser meant that the gunner didn't have to adjust his aim after the tank stopped. The Sherman could still fire on the move, just with reduced accuracy. The Tiger, however, lacked a stabiliser, but also couldn't fire on the move, and the recoil from the 88mm gun would damage the turret ring if it did.

    The reason white phosphorus is so dangerous is because it is pyrophoric meaning it ignites on contact with oxygen so it can’t be smothered, it has a melting point lower than it’s burn temperature meaning you have a liquid on fire that is also sticky, a boiling point lower than it’s burn temperature so it boils spitting sticky fire which catches more things on fire. Not to mention it’s extreme toxicity. It reacts with moisture in the air to form acid which is why it is used in some tear gas grenades used by riot control because it irritates the lungs and eyes. There is also no cure for white phosphorus poisoning. It can’t be put out by water (forms acid) only by special neutralizing agents and by time you get a hold of those whatever was burning is already reduced to rubble. So really the only thing you can do with a white phosphorus fire is hope you get the neutralizing agents or wait until it burns itself out which takes extremely long and hope nothing else catches fire.

    Dude i remember the Training Exercise of "Ambush" at twilight hours we had to do. I remember this vividly because i was on the MG3 and my Unteroffizier(NCO) told me, for whatever reason, as soon as the Unimok(like a bigger Humvee, unarmoured) of the other team comes around the curve (Ambush was set up on a forrest dirt road) i should leave my prepared bunker and reposition. Which i did, stumbling in the half dark and hitting my face on 10kg of MG -.-. Still was kinda fun though, super chaotic. No idea who is who. Thaught me that i'm ok with playing a Soldier, but i really don't want to be in a war, like ever.

    The PIAT is a spigot launcher, thought up by the British. Key advantage: You could be inside a house or rubble and still fire that thing. Downside: The cocking of the spring assembly was pretty cumbersome and you essentially needed to stand up for it. Though the propellant charge in the round recocked the spring after firing.

      Well yeah it's literally a Spring Mortar made into a direct fire weapon. You could cock it laying down but it was definitely cumbersome and heavy. The charge however is so large that it is a threat even to Modern Tanks.
      But it's range is really short so there is that problem. Also in a pinch, you could even hit the bottom of a round on a hard surface and throw it instead of firing it, athlough that wasn't an intentional design feature.

    Hehe. What my grandfather and the Finnish Defence Forces did during the Winter War and the Continuation War was seriously progressive. He was a Kaukopartio (basically spec ops reconnaissance) Radio operator. He went behind enemy lines and radioed in where the enemy moved, often directing massive artillery fire onto major red army assets before they were in the front lines or any way prepared for combat.
    The way they did this, there was a aircraft in the air while he was making his move on the ground, sometimes alone I might add, and CW the enemy's position and complement forward. Then, from the airplane this information was forwarded to field command, and from there to artillery batteries.
    Also, that aircraft was under the command of my Grandfather. Not the other way around...
    You guys claim to have come up this idea. But, the fact of the matter is, you prolly heard about it from Larry Thorne (Nee Lauri Törni) as you didn't even experiment with anything of the sort before Korea and only fielded things seriously in Vietnam...
