Nice vid. Ive had my boat with the 3.0 for 20+ years, and for the longest time would drain into a pan under the motor. What a pain. You can only drain about 1½ qts at a time because you have to tip the pan to get it out. Then a few times, I just drained it into the bilge, and then raised the bow to drain it from there. Then a few years ago, I went to the suction method. Way easier, and less mess.
Although it does make the job a lot easier to use the pump I just would not suggest doing that. by doing that you're not getting all of the oil out of it and if there's any dirt or sludge or anything in the oil you're not going to suck it up through that pump. The best thing to do is get a big heavy duty contractor's garbage bag and lay it underneath the motor and then pull the bottom plug. That way you are assured that you're going to get every drop of oil out and any dirt or sludge or male shavings that may be in the oil.. just my opinion but I see a lot of other people are agreeing with me that pump is a bad idea. And it also just makes the job longer
Contaminants should be contained in the filter or suspended throughout the oil. So long as you change oil on a regular basis, getting every last drop should not be critical. Extraction seems to be getting pretty common as car engines become less accessible.
Honestly, I thought the same thing there should be a oil plug on the motor at the bottom just like a car and I would prefer to drain it out also that way 🤷🏻♂️
After struggling to find a boat mechanic to do this (to busy working on bigger boats!) So I was able to do the job myself thanks so youtube, plus saved a couple of hundred in labour costs. It is a Seriously dead easy process. How good are those cheap pumps, so surprised how well they work. Thanks for the Video.
I know almost everyone pumps the oil out, like he shown. My question is why not add a hose to your oil drain, so you can drain the oil through the hull drain of the boat? I have done this with 2 other Mercruisers of my friends without a problem. Changing oil was very easy after that.
@@conlanbartley1636 You use a 3/8, 5/16 or 1/4” oil resistant hose, what ever fits your oil drain plug hole, make the hose long enough, to go from the engine out through, the water drain of your Boat Hull. Cut the hose long enough, to go down into a bucket. On the end of your hose make sure you have a threaded cap on it, because if all else fails the cap should not ever let you down, with it you should never have a oil leak. On the oil drain, of your engine block, put in a oil shutoff, that’s any valve that can handle the heat and the hot oil. Make sure it is the same tread count, that fits, your engine block. After the shutoff, is on your block place a 90 degree, street L, or what 90degree you wish to use, that fits your shutoff correctly. You then connect the drain hose to the street L. When a oil change is ever needed, open your drain plug on the hull, run your hose out through the drain, down into the bucket. Warm up your engine, so the oil flows easily. Take off the hose cap, and turn on the oil shutoff. Open the oil fill port, on the top of the engine tappet cover, this is where you fill your, engine oil. Opening the fill port, allows the engine block, to get the air needed to drain properly. After all of the oil is drained, reverse the process. Pull the hose back in, plug the hull, shut off the drain valve. Fill the engine with the correct oil, your done, and your off and running, (easy pessy). I hope that I, was able to helped you understand what I do, to change my oil in my I/O, the brand of I/O doesn’t matter, because all I/O engines are the same. I have done this for years, on my boats, and all my friends boats who have asked for my help. Doing this, there is no oil mess, in my hull. I have a brand new, engine oil suction pump. Used only a couple of times. I don’t care for those types of pumps for changing oil. I do love the pump for other things, when needed. Using a oil suction pump, to change oil, you can’t get the thicker stuff out, or the engine metal shavings, that always accrue, unless you get lucky, to suck the oil in that pocket, of nasty. When the warm, old oil is being passed over, the nasty’s, it will flush all that stuff out of your engine. With your car, If sucking the old oil, out of the engine, was so good, no one would drain the oil out, it would always be pumped out. The only oil that is ever pumped out, is for engines where oil is hard to get out. I just did a work around. I was asked in PM’s to clarify. So now kiddies, my presentation is complete, thank you, 😂. Later Everyone, have a better boating day, or for my fellow fishermen, (TIGHT LINES to all).
Pull the oil cap to release pressure. Maybe pump fast till it starts coming out. Is there oil in the motor? Maybe it is a bad pump. Try it in your sink Maybe. Is the pump the right direction?
Is there something simple I am missing? We warmed up the engine for 5 min attached our “trac” hand pump directly to the dip stick tube and pumped but nothing comes out. Dip stick looks to have oil when pulled out of dipstick tube. Do we need to vent the filter?

Thanks man I’ve got a little bigger motor but you showed me the basics
I really appreciate it stay healthy and safe float on
I like your videos. You go straight to the point.

My cheap pump has been working fir years. I got it for$18 but, they wwnt up in cost
Going to attempt this on my boat...
Came here first.
Good luck. It's pretty easy
What is the model number on the extractor pump? please and thank you

Can you make a video on how to replace or install a new drain hose and dip stick? I have the same 4.3 but mine doesnt have those
You don't have a drain hose or dip stick? Some don't have the drain hose. I never use mine
Would that work on a threaded tube dipstick
It should work
I simply use a drain hose that is connected to drain plug valve and feed it through the boat drain hole into a jug.
It's a. Easy way too. To hard for me to reach the bottom of the boat
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka using a snake wire eliminates the need to stand on your head.
I got a pump but I can’t get anything to come out of the dipstick it’s on the intake hose but it just won’t pull any oil, any tricks or tips?

Nice video thanks for sharing - Do you have a link or brand name for the pump??
Just look up oil pump for boat

That link is the pump I bought
Thanks
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka lol , you paid 18 and now it cost 40. Thank you joe B. Traitor
My local dealer wants $183 to do this on a 3.0. Doesn't look any different than any other oil change to me, other than using a pump.
Yep. Pretty easy. Buy a decent pump that will work every time. Will cost about $25 in oil and $10 for an oil filter. Super easy.

Maybe your pump isn't working right. It should seal around the dip stick holder and suck the oil like a straw
Maybe take the oil cap off also
Your dipstick tube does not go down to the bottom of the pan.thats why you won't get any oil out of it
thanks
I would only add to use the new oil on your oil filter gasket, vs the used oil. Otherwise, nice job.
Yes! I did it but didn't show it. I did in my newest oil change video
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka and wipe off the mounting pad on the block to make sure its clean.
@@Luigi-pk8mk yes. Make sure it Is a clean surface and the rubber gasket from the old filter didn't get stuck on there
I wont need earmuffs,my boat is not that noisy.
Lol
Your shift cable isn’t bolted all the way down lol. Look at the nut!
Where did you get the pump at
Online.
Just figured out he ment place pump over top of DIP STICK TUBE. Not the dip stick.
I'm bad with speaking
yeah you cant pump through if you dont remove the dipstick
Check I won’t do that
I wouldn't either.
That is not a motor.
Engine? 😁😁😁
Tell that to the NASCAR folks and see what THEY say.
not subscribing lol
That's cool
