When I was a youngster many years ago on Long Island, we live right under the flight path to Idyllwild airport (now JFK). I was always thrilled to see these TWA planes fly by overhead. Seeing them again brings back fond memories.
Same here, growing up on L.I., Hempstead, we saw/years a number of these wonderful, iconic passenger carriers by the great Lockheed Corp. flying over Nassau Co, in their app/dep paths to Idlewild (JFK)! Also saw numbers of the Air Force C-69s flying in/out of close-by Mitchel Field, mid/late 50s!! What a gargantuan, throaty roar, slightly out-of-sink the Weight radials emanated during their departure climb, after take-off!! Shall never ever forget!! What an airplane!!

We lived under the LaGuardia approach in Flushing Queens in the mid 60's - so so loud at dusk the engine exhaust would glow as they flew over unforgettable
Thank you for this. My dad flew his entire career for TWA starting on DC3s, then Martin 404s, then Connies, and finally retired after many years as captain on Boeing 707s ( Might have been Connies first, then martin 404s). Anyway, I have always wanted to see the interior of a constellation.

In 1952 my uncle came into Newark from LosAngeles in 8 hours! Nonstop!!I couldn't wait to fly the Super G!
In 1952, that must have been almost unbelievable then - to cross the United States in 8 hours, when just 10 years earlier it would have taken 16 to 18 hours!

I was lucky to walk through a SG Connie of Varig (a Brazilian carrier) back in 1958. A luxurious fantastic aircraft. I'll never get over its interiors refinement. Those were the happy days of air travel. Sigh,
Em 1961 dia 18 de Agosto eu imigrei para Estados Unidos voando um VARIG Super G de Congonhas, com escalas no Rio, Belem, Port of Spain ( Trinidad ) e finalmente New York Idlewild. Depois peguei um desses TWA Super G de La Guardia para Chicago, com escalas em Pittsburgh e Cleveland. Eu tinha 11 anos, logicamente estava com meus pais e irma. Agora tenho 73, e tenho essa viagem carimbada na minha cabeca como se foi ontem, viagem para Sao Paulo muitas vezes apos isso, agora ja parei abracos pra voce, agora de Chicago e Miami....

Super video, thanks for the brilliant walkthrough. I had never really thought about it, but looking at the small number of seats, I looked it up, and this model of the Constellation seated anywhere from 47 to 106 passengers. Which in today's terms, is really not that many. But this plane remains one of the most iconic passenger planes ever designed and flown in production. It is simply beautiful.

Nice video of this gorgeous TWA Super Constellation. Last year flew in the second existing Super Connies (HB-RSC) worldwide that is still airworthy and the only one that is admitted for passengers flights (for members only). What a great piece of aviation history! Thanks for sharing this video :)

The gauge you see to the upper middle right is the flaps setting. It is the most convenient I have ever seen. It literally says take off [position] , and landing. If you overspeed the rpm's, the red orange lights come on until you cut back on the props, roughly at 70%. Very nice flying and stable aircraft.

Toured the Save A Connie when it was displayed at EAA Oshkosh in the late 1990s and again at the Airline History Museum at the downtown airport when I was working in Kansas City in 2003. IF ONLY it would be made flyable again and tour the U.S., at least at airshows....
I guess I am lucky , I flew from Kansas City Mo. in Dec 1963 to Denver Co. and then I believe onto Phoenix Az I didn’t realize that this would be one of the last commercial flights the Connie would be making.
Flew on KLM and Air France Connies. My parents flew on the TWA Connies in the 40s and 50s from Cairo to Geneva. In 1950 one crashed immediately taking off from Cairo.

When I started flying for TWA in the 80s, the older flight attendants used to tell us about flying on the "Connies". No wonder they had such fond memories! The room for the passengers and crew is astounding by todays standards.A real kitchen! And it looks like the flight navigator sat exposed to the passengers?? There must have been a curtain or something separating him from them. Anyway, I would have loved to have flown on one just once.
This is a Super "H" Constellation that was generally used to haul freight versus passenger when it was first operated by Slick Airways starting in 1959.

Brings back memories my first commercial flight From Seattle to Anchorage PNA! Ex Air France I believe and I do remember that Battleship gray bathroom! Complete & Roomy with linen headrest not like a Boeing 737 sardine Max “Comet”
Also note when you were at the cockpit there are sometimes four to five crew members for the cockpit which includes the navigator, radio operator, and the engineer.

As a kid we would fly Pacific Northwest Airlines Connie's Seattle to Kodiak. They que serve Alaska King Crab sandwiches in coach. Then once we got over Cook Inlet the plane would start to bounce - and Connie's could bounce. The flight attendants would run up as down the aisle with full barf bags My dad always joked they served King Crab sandwiches on the way up and they all came up again in Cook Inlet. We flew a Connie from Kodiak to Seattle with a few stops on the Panhandle. Roy Rogers was in first class. My folks asked the stewardess if she would ask him if we could meet him. She did and the old bastard said no. At every airport (including Kodiak) some beautiful woman (not his wife Dale Evans) would meet him and they'd be smooching and cuddling. The stewardess, who had changed her opinion of Rogers after he refused to meet us three fans said "Mr. Roy Rogers sure has a lot of Kissing Cousins." But boy did I love those flights. Then we would get to Kodiak and get on Kodiak Airways' Grumman Goose to fly to Ouzinke. Those and the 747s are still my favorite airplanes.

I grew up in Kansas City Kansas and this would fly over our neighborhood on occasion. What a sight and sound.... that was back in the 1980's..... does it still fly?
No, only two can be flown today but they are not used for commercial use.

Geez, 500 gallons an hour! That's like $2300 per hour in fuel to fly that thing...forget it. Back in the day high octane fuel was around .25 a gallon, so it would have been $125 an hour...that makes more sense. Nice to look at.

i love this old Connie and when i get to see it i will walk in it and look in it and look at all 4 of its setups and hope when i am there i will ask them when will they start it up if they do not i am fine with it i have see 2 Connies my self but not one that fly passengers on

I remember goin up to Tucson AZ to the 390 Pima Air/Space museum they have about 5 hangars you can visit from & I've gone up there plenty of times last time i went there they were working on the DC-3 (C-47) & a F64 Hellcat fighter. But man i know that they still allow us to rent luxury cars & i mean Man Made Real AMERICAN CARS like Mustangs or Pontiac's, Lincoln's, or Cadillacs that you can rent for a day or whole week why can't they still allow us passengers to experience this fly on these luxurious planes with bunk beds or nice soft comfortable seating like they had back in the 50s-70s? even with Stewardess bringing you gourmet meals not just peanuts or chips, but like how they did it with coffee or tea with a steak dinner you know & sidings for good price. I would go for that deal of doing it i bet a lot of people would take advantage of that deal & trip even the old timers before us would still do it.

Amazing how much we have given up in our insatiable quest for speed. 330 MPH is plenty fast. This is light years nicer than today's flying Greyhounds.
Back in the days when you had the expensive seats (coach) and the REAL expensive seats, 1st class (which by the way was in the back of the airliner away from the noisy propeller engines).

Was that the L 1049 "Save A Connie" parked next to it? Seems to me they paid less than $5,000 for it which included about ten engines. I wonder if there is enough experience still around to restore one of these planes. My brother used to rebuild old warbirds (including F-104s). I guess if you have blueprints you can build a lot of parts but probably not all. One thing l remember about the F-104 was that the leading edge of the wing was razor sharp. (Sorry l got off of the subject).
I was on a TWA flight from Louisville to Seattle on the first leg from Fort Knox to Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks. I was hoping for a voice-over description of the aircraft and its engines.
Connie loves should keep a close watch on the remaining Starliner at the LEWISTON/Auburn Airport in Auburn Me. That aircraft is headed to Germany in pieces first by trailers to Starsport Me the by ship. The maintenance paperwork is being destroyed at the L/A Airport before the airplane is shipped home. The 1749 STARLINER will be a static display only. Good LUCK to all in Germany.

WOW! Look how much space they have! They have beds, big bathrooms, lots of legroom, they even ate with real knives & forks & plates & their means were probably delicious! Flying on that connie was like heaven compared to flying on the pig pens we currently refer to as flying economy on modern aircraft! Because airlines only think about their profits & dont care about customer comfort & satisfaction, They have lowered their standards so much & taken away so many amenities, that flying on a modern jetliner (unless you dish out 3-6 times more money to flying business/first class) is basically an extremely uncomfortable experience!
Well, not quite. The price of a round-trip ticket from San Francisco to New York, on TWA’s Super Constellation in 1946 was $261. That’s around $3,733 in today’s dollars. TWA no longer exists today, but you can get two round trip business class tickets on Delta for $2,800 for the same distance. The difference: Super Connie took 11 hours plus a fuel stop (and Delta does it in five hours), and today’s Delta business class is far more spacious, luxurious, comfortable, with much less noisy and bumpy ride, and much better and tastier food and drinks. So, far better quality experience for much, much less money. Plus, you don’t have to have $3,700 to fly today; you can do it for $300 in the economy class (or $1,400 in business luxury). Back then, that was simply impossible.
That was the original Constellation. The Super Connie came out later.
Economy today, what we used to call Coach is HORRIBLE today. Pretzels and Potato Chips are not real food, and having no leg room is not "spacious". I don't care if is cheaper. It is grim.
Where are the overhead luggage shelves? The air nozzles?

If someone said you can go to space, or fly on a Constellation, I would take Connie for the same amount of hours every time. (fortunate enough to have been aboard this aircraft on the ground when she was still on the airshow circuit)
The engines must not have any oil in them and it doesn't appear they've had any for a while prior to this video.

Unfortunately not at the moment, the Airline History Museum is going through some legal battles which have closed them down for the time being. On the other side of the airport is the TWA Museum and I highly recommend checking them out, definitely worth a day trip!! They’re at 10 Richards rd at the downtown airport in TWAs original overhaul hangar.

Yes, that was an L-1049 (L-1049A) which was the first type of Super Constellation operated by TWA starting in September of 1952.

Beautiful and elegant airplane but a "hunk of junk" Those engines were a NIGHTMARE. Lockheed Constellation, had a reputation for dramatic engine starts, lot of smoke and flames and the fuel consumption, but it was normal operation for the radial engines however.
