Super Constellation ✈ Amazing Black Forest Flight & Low Pass in Cockpit!

- A truly spectacular scenic flight with the legendary Super Constellation over the formidable Black Forest and the beautiful Lake Schluchsee. The formation flight with a Pilatus PC-12 was hugely impressive. Flying across the historical city Freiburg im Breisgau. A breathtaking lowpass and go-around was performed while I stayed in the cockpit. The pilots were busy with the manually operated aircraft which demands a high level of concentration. Finally, we landed at the same location where the flight began, in Bremgarten Germany.

No crappy music! Just engine music. Super videography. A keeper.
Thank you!
Probably the most beautiful airplanes ever built. Just stunning. One of my earliest memories as a child was walking out on the tarmac to board a TWA Connie. I was maybe 4 years old and I remember how beautiful I thought it was. Somehow I felt I was destined to be an Airline Pilot. I've just celebrated my 30th year with Continental/United.
The Connie is my favorite airliner too, a very sexy plane.
My dad was an A&P mechanic for TWA. I was also 4 years old when I took my first flight on a Connie in 1958 from Idlewild to LA.

I never had the privilege of flying in a Connie, but I'v had the priviledge of flying in DC-3's. Once we hit a air pocket and fell quite a ways, twice. it was glorious! People were screaming but I thought it was great, of course I was much younger then and had complete faith in the pilots and the plane!
The epitome of piston powered passenger flight. I worked on the 3350 engine 50 years ago on P-2 Neptune's and can attest to the power and efficiency of those powerplants. The L-1049 was truly an inspired airframe.
Best looking plane ever built!
Among the most beautiful airplanes ever. Awesome flight thanks

IMO the Super Connie is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever built. It's fuselage looks like a dolphin jumping out of the water. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for the compliment. Cheers Matt
Nothing beats the sound of good ol' radial engines
Quite so ! Four radials do not make noise - They Sing !!
Wow - that sound. Nothing comes close. Thank you for posting.
I live in Australia we have a Super Constellation affectionately called Connie she’s airworthy and beautiful!
I was 18, in the Navy, and going to my first duty station following my boot-camp leave. Because I was in my uniform, TWA upgraded me to first-class passenger status. I was delightfully surprised when I saw the plane, and realized I would be a passenger! “Connie” was the most beautiful, graceful fuselage design I’ve ever seen … down-swept nose … upswept tail … all of it like the flow of an artists’ brush. The steady engine drones were energizing and I’d never felt such exhilaration from a mechanical device before, nor after, that flight. This video brought it all back through the dusty cobwebbed corners of my aging memory. Thank you.
Thank you very much for sharing your nice story!
My brother also liked the Connie. Who wouldn't? Until he had to fly on one, from SF to Tokyo, in the 60's. Long trip, small plane, noisy, bumpy - he couldn't wait to get off! The romance verses reality...
But then, I once flew to Rio on a 757, and felt the same way. Even in business class, with the whole row to myself.
I love that, upgraded to first class because you were in uniform.
Reminds me of my first flight overseas in 1959 from Frankfurt DE to Laguardia. I was ^ then. Two engines caught on fire and another was smoking but no flames then started up and if I remember right , we had to land at Gander Newfoundland. Great video!
Bring this plane back for occasional transcontinental flights. I am sure people would still fly them for nostalgia and a sense of history. Beautiful plane!
I was a GI passenger on one of the amazing airplanes back in 66, I was told it was the final flight, ever this particular aircraft. I recall the seats were red in color, and pretty threadbare. There were a few other soldiers on it, may have been flying from Atlanta, don’t remember for sure. Irving P.
From what I remember, flying on an EAL Shuttle backup from DCA to LGA fifty years ago, about everything from a Connie was a 'low-pass.' My skull is still vibrating. Such a really beautiful aircraft!
This beautiful bird was a bit before my time as a Flight Attendant with EAL, but I did have the pleasure to work on her grandaughter, the L10ll. The Electra was the last prop that EAL had and I did my very first flight on it in very bumpy weather coming into "La Garbage" on Thanksgiving weekend. Got airsick and was afraid I would throw up on passengers seated across from me and get fired on my first flight.....Would have loved to have a flight on the "Connie", I use to hear the pilots talk about her and how much they missed her. Geez, the guy flying the panel looks very busy!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience of your very 1st flight. What a story! How many years did you work as a Flight Attendant? I am convinced that you would definitely have many interesting story to tell. I remember Eastern Air Lines especially when the flew the great L10ll. EAL was the launch customer of this impressive aircraft.
Yes, the flight in the Super Connie was very adventurous and most spectacular. I will always remember it. All the best to you.
the sound of these engines are like music for me ! great video ! thank you for sharing
My pleasure! The flight was most spectacular. Cheers Matt
1:10 I can listen to that beast go full throttle anytime, any day. You can hear the immense power in her. So beautiful!
Great video. A classic aircraft and some beautiful scenery. Love the footage of the cockpit.
That's when flying an aircraft was an art form that required an entirely different set of skills.
Thanks for posting this vide.
Thank you for your kind words! Much appreciated!
Staggeringly beautiful - both the scenery and the aircraft. Thank you for this!
So majestically exciting when the engines smoke on startup.. 🤗
Now that’s my definition of a REAL AIRPLANE! Really Love those old Connies!
I have almost 2500 hours in the USAF EC-121... the finest three engine aircraft ever built.
Even this day, she's a grand ol' lady of the sky! Functional art at it's engineering best!
Fantastic plane! Thanks for sharing, and greets from the Netherlands!
This is going to sound both ridiculous and sad, and I guess it is. I love aircraft and the idea of flight, but I have a terrible fear of flying and so the closest I get is in Flight Simulator and UA-cam videos. It also means I'm forever stuck in Australia and will probably never see the rest of the World in real life. Thank you for this fantastic video. 👍
Thank you for your kind feedback. It was a very adventurous flight with this Super Connie. All the best, Matt
They have the only flying Connie in Australia at Qantas.
It ain’t ridiculous and sad to me at all. You have a thing, many people do.
Loved the part at 4:56 where the shadow of that beautiful plane crosses the ground. Great clip.
Thank you for the compliment.
NICE! Mid twentieth century beautiful air plane, with twenty first century tower crane, in the background. What a pretty picture !
Thank You, for bringing back childhood memories.
THUMBS UP, BOYS !
Thank you very much!
The. Most beautiful propeller driven plane ever built love this 😀 ❤️ plane
That was some great footage, what an amazing experience this must have been! Loved those cockpit views and super cool to get to fly along with the PC-12.
Thank you very much! The formation flight with the PC-12 was awesome. It was a most wonderful flight experience which I can highly recommend to you! Cheers Matt
Brings back memories. My dad worked for the US Army in the Canal Zone (Panama) and we would fly Military Air Transport Service (MATS) C-121 Constellations from Panama to Charleston, SC during the 1950's. Keep up the videos.
Thanks for sharing your memories. It is great to hear. This flight meant an unforgettable and most wonderful flight experience for me. Cheers Matt
So beautiful, a classic....Thank you.
the plane, the countryside all beautiful
Thank you very much!
Simplesmente lindo!!! Esse foi o primeiro avião de passageiros criado para longas distâncias.

One of the best planes built
Beautiful!
Thank you! It was a most adventurous flight!
I have an ID from my grandfather by Lockheed featuring a Constellation. He flew until 1966 in Mexico.
Very cool! The Constellation is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
Marvelous! Thank you so much for posting this.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Looks like you need to really fly it. Speaking of Black Forest, once I was driving around in Germany when I decided to exit the Autobahn and see how the countryside looks like. Soon I was driving in a dense forest and completely alone with nobody in sight - I had arrived to Schwartzwald. I even stopped a few times to see if somebody would come. The troll forest was so dense that you could vanish on a whim. The experience did not last for more than twenty minutes or so before emerging to broad daylight, but it was still strange to suddenly be alone in a dark forest in densely populated Germany.
Thanks for watching! It must be a cool experience to be alone in Schwarzwald. For me it sounds great :)
Breathaking in every way!
Breath Taking at it's best 👍
Thanks!
@@matthiashaenniYou're welcomed 😊
Thanks.Very Beautiful Airplane.
That was amazing, Matt! Lucky!! I'd immediately grab the chance to fly with one of these, must be so awesome. Beautiful video, loved the engine startup!
I understand :) It was a most wonderful flight experience which I can highly recommend to you! It is the only Super Constellation worldwide which is allowed to take passengers on board. Cheers Matt

awesome
wow..that was cool :)
It really was! Thanks mate! Much appreciate your support. Matt
I ❤️ Connies!!!
Constellations were the second planes known as Connies. Before them were Convairs which I think were made by a company by the name of Republic Aviation.
Hate to disagree, but there two Constellations, the first being designated 749 and the larger later model the 1049.
steve holton Steve, Convair, which built the great twin engine 240-540 series of short-haul passenger airliners, the "Metroliners", commonly called "Convairs" was the result of the merger of Consolidated and Vultee. This company went on to build the 880 and 990 jet airliners.
Klasse Mathias, tolle Schnittechnik.
Danke!!
This was great Matt, you must have been very happy to get a ride on this and to film as well.a like from me.....Trevor.''
Thanks Trevor. It was an unforgettable and most wonderful flight experience. Cheers Matt
Awesome video mate
Thanks!
+matthiashaenni Subbed !
Wow, und als Begleitung die Pilatus 12
Personally, as the Sud-Aviation Caravelle is most beautiful jet propulsion aircraft ever designed, the Connie is as piston-propeller engineering. You cannot not loving it.
Turboprop? Well, that's a tough one... I take three: Bristol Britannia; Lockheed Electra; and the monster of all, Tupolev TU 114.
Very nice aircraft. You can see the mine her now online on UA-cam
That's our area, the plane flies over us a fair bit on its way to and from Basel. It's great to see.

Thank you very much!
Geniale Aufnahmen!Daumen hoch!Gruss inselvideo!
Danke! Der Flug war eine unglaublich tolle Erfahrung! Cheers Matt
the flying banana!
Wow these huge radio controlled models just look so realistic. You'd think it was the real thing.
This was a real thing and definitely not a radio controlled model ;)
Le plus belle avion du monde à piston ( ensuite vient le DC 10 aussi le plus belle avion du monde de la nouvelle génération
I wait for that day when the LH Connie will come to germany and I could see them fly
Good gravy there are a lot of buttons, knobs and gauges in that plane, I would hate to see the wiring harnesses :O
It's from the days when the Flight Engineer was the unsung hero of the air................................
...and Radio Operators! _ .... .- -. -.- ...!!!!!
Without question, without the the flight engineer the Connie didn't fly, the captain and co-pilot would not known what to do.
Very true, my dad was one of them. He loved the connie as you could feel the plane respond to the controls unlike the jets.
believe me i have seen enough of them, ouch!
❤️💯
Thank you
@@matthiashaenni You're more than welcome. I'll never forget my earliest plane rides before jets overshadowed commercial aviation.
But, like your first girlfriends, it's tough to play favorites. I'll rate them in my own way:
#1 for Connie - original Queen of the Skies
2 - DC6b - Classic bulbous 4 engine beauty. If Jayne Mansfield was a plane this would be her
3 - DC-3... Always check back - on some days it's #1
Honorable mentions - FH227s, Convair 440-660 etc.
I flew in them back in the day but it’s hard to believe that seeing them now. Military used them a lot for anti sub operations.
Flight engineer? I have fear flight in this airplane, but is a beatiful.
Peace "Earth Brothers", wonderful planet, built to be observed from the Heavens.Hirini
Kelly Johnson's work!
Dois pilotos e um flight engennering a bordo
As was the case with most propeller driven planes of that era they had reverse thrust which was used to shorten braking distances when landing. A little known fact it was used at outstations to reverse into and out different areas when a tractor wasn't available, even when it was, just for the thrill of it.
Thanks for this input. I did not know that.
Can someone tell me what was the flight engineer doing with the levers ? 4:33 by example. EDIT: I paused at 4:40 and apparently the panel for those levers say "Propeller Synchronizer", so was he basically manually doing the Prop Sync ?
Great to see some Navitimers in the cockpit!
It was a very adventurous flight which I will never forget. Thanks for watching.
Wright r3350 turbo compound :)
excellent video, thank you....very short take off. I know it's not accurate, but I feel safer in prop planed then jets
Most wonderful aircraft. Thank you for the compliments! Cheers Matt
