  • The ever-relevant question: How do we make our photos look like film? I will try to answer it much as possible, by using Lightroom and Dehancer as a tool. Oh, and Fujifilm x100v . #fujifilmx100v and now that it's popular, Canon G7x ii #canong7xmarkii

    Hi all! Make sure to use promo code ULYSSES if you're interested in getting Dehancer.
    Also, I think I got too excited in my word usage at the later part of the video became a bit harsh. lol
    Will try to fix that in the next vid. Cheers :)

    I come from a music production background and got interested in photography over the last couple months. It's funny to see that people here tend to do the same things to their material: Trying to get away from the digital cleanness and add something analog, warm and organic. Love your channel! And yes, you catched me with the title of your last video 😂

    • @nickjohnson398
      @nickjohnson398 Рік тому +3

      Yessss the film "revival" is so similar to the tape "revival" I think now that the tech is there to have the option of pristine digital cleanliness both in audio and video, we can appreciate the texture and "character" of these analog mediums. I'd say stuff like "Dehancer" is the visual equivalent of all the tape machine plugins that keep popping up.

      Same here. I started losing interest producing music after many, many years, and photography is starting to take its place. I've been selling off some of my old synths and samplers to purchase old lenses and digi cams. And yes, it's interesting how even some of the same principles apply -- I feel like the filmic look is the photography equivalent of tape saturation, warm compression, etc.

    I never really liked a very clean look to my pictures, but started going a bit wilder with the editing when I started to shoot more with my phone, but this time to hide the limitations of the phone camera. But now I'm in a conflicting moment with my photography, because people seem to like my pictures, and I do too to a certain degree, but can't avoid questioning if I'm not relying too much on editing instead of perfecting my in camera skills.

      I often wonder the same thing. I think edits should be viewed as simply enhancing a good photograph which needs more important aspects like composition and lighting to be nailed in camera.

    I haven’t used a camera in 10+ years. Got into photography in 2009 with a canon t1i. For some reason your G7x ii video popped up on recommend and it made me wonder why I stopped. I love the style of your videos. You have inspired me to get back to it. I’m awaiting delivery of my G7x iii. I wanted something more discreet than my bulky old camera. I had trouble finding a used G7x ii for a reasonable price so I went with the mark iii. If you see this comment, what are your thoughts on the mark iii for street photography? I think if you can keep the videos concise, but retain your cinematic and moody style, all enhanced by your sort of "normal guy" personality, you'll keep doing well.
    Subject is supreme, though. I'm buying my first ever camera in part because of your previous video. I've just purchased a refurbished Canon G7 XII from the Canon website, expedited shipping, for $580.
    I'm a novelist, but I've always had a bit of a thing for camera work, even though I've never owned a camera. Your video really sparked off a fiery desire to try my hand at creating interesting, intense and compelling photographs.
    What will a novelist do with these photographs? I've no clue. Maybe I'll just use it as a hobby that has zero pressure, a creative outlet without expectations. Maybe I'll use the pictures as jumping off points for short stories.
    But anyway, I think your grainy, "filmic" and cool-90's-action-sci-fi-movie style is setting you apart from a lot of other creators.
    Godspeed.

    This makes me wonder, when color photos were introduced, did photographers then try to emulate old grainy pictures from past decades? maybe, until nobody cared and BW pictures are now few and far between. Now with digital I feel younger photographers don't care about emulating film. Anyone under 30 will not appreciate or understand it, film is a nice filter to them and that's it. Sad that we will see it fade away.
