I can't say that this would be helpful for the ladies but the amount of force/pressure applied is key when a dude shaves his face with a safety razor - one of the big reasons why most (good) safety razors are "weighty" is so you can let the heft of the razor do the work - that may pose a problem for parts you're shaving that are not vertical or from underneath (back of one's leg for example). Time invested is also another possible issue - it just takes more time (and shorter strokes/passes) with a double edge safety razor than it does with a cartridge razor. As others have mentioned too - different blades perform differently in razors - it may be worth it to read a few reviews of your razor and look for suggestions on blades or try a sample package - look for a mix of mild, efficient and aggressive.

Thank you! This definitely makes sense (and I definitely need to be more patient)

I definitely agree with this comment. There are certain blades that are highly recommended that in my specific safety razor will chop up my face. Astra premium blades tend to work well in multiple different razors. And it’s true, certain angles of shaving on different parts of the body are not well suited to safety razors. As a man, there’s no way my beloved safety razor is going near my more beloved johnson.

Also wanted to mention, make sure you’re only shaving straight. Any movement from side to side will cause an immediate cut. Short strokes help to minimize that.

I don't know if you're still giving this a shot, but I've noticed many people try to do single long strokes while shaving, when a single blade is best with many short strokes to cut hair. I use a folding straight edge and the trajectory of the blade will have to change to the curvature of your surface. You try to cut straight through the curves, you'll cut skin.

At first I was slicing my legs like Edward scissor hands, then I learned to apply less pressure and use EOS Shea better dry skin shave cream. I haven’t had a cut since…

A safety razor suggested for woman is the Leaf brand twig or thorn. As its shaped more like the Gillette razors. And you just snap a DE Safety razor in half.

Only 3 nicks when shaving half your body against the grain is admirable! A major quirk, that some call a downside and some call a benefit, is that you really need to concentrate, be patient, and make sure your hair and skin are prepped. Applying your cream with a badger (or synthetic) hair brush which makes the hairs stand up helps, and because there's only one blade that can't always catch everything on the first pass, it's often recommended to finish the pass, then lather up for a second pass in a different direction and catch all the loose ends left in the first pass.
Switching to a more mild razor (which has less blade showing so it's harder to cut yourself) and mild blades (which have coating that makes them more forgiving on your skin) can really help too! The mild Henson AL13 razor is extremely hard to nick yourself with and still gives an amazing shave, and some beginner-friendly blades like the Astra Superior Platinum and Dorco ST-301 make the experience even smoother.

So can you shave against the grain on your face with a safety razor?? Bc I like clean shaves but idk if you can or not

    • @BBD-AITB
      @BBD-AITB 11 місяців тому

@@jaym1227yep, but not on your first pass. Do a first pass with the grain, reapply whatever cream or soap you’re using, do your second pass by shaving across the grain, reapply, then go against the grain for the last pass. Work slow and be careful about irritation. Have a styptic pencil on hand to fix up nicks.
There are a ton of good tutorial videos on UA-cam about safety razor shaving. SinatraLennon is the Bob Ross of shaving and has a good beginner’s guide video.

Yeah, that's key, concentrate, be patient and I would add, map your body, get to know your hair. This is an art, not zip zip with a cartridge, lol. It's knacky, you have to be patient, develop a technique and get some really good blades, (which don't necessarily have to be expensive). Some of the cheapest blades I have used were some of the best. Some of the best advice I've heard about it from some vids, was also to get to know your face (or in her case legs, pits etc.) and how the hair grows.
I got a variety pack and it's actually fun, trying out different blades. I really recommend doing that, it's amazing! Some I really like and hey, the variety pack I got was cheap and had 18 braands. So for $17 for 100 blades, that's alright. Some real nice blades in there too, I'm torn and will have to start over and rate them more seriously now, lol. I was just kinda trying them all out once, to get an idea.
Now it's time to get more serious and find out what I truly like best. Rapira is still a clear winner for me, sharper and cheaper than famous Feather blades from Japan. But Big Ben is real nice too, super sharp and also better than Feather. Shark brand is nice because they are quite sharp and come in many different steels/models. Softer steels can be more comfortable than stainless, so Shark is good that way, they have like 3-4 kinds of blades and steel chemistry. There were so many good blades in that multi pack, so it's a really great option for beginners and advanced alike. You may find a brand that is 10 times better than what you are currently using and cheaper! Seen it happen already. Blades near me are Wilkonson and Gillette at $1.00 per blade. Pffft, no way, I've use bettter than both already at like 25 cents a blade. lol.

Also, with those crystal hair remover yokes, a friend of mine had one and was mindlessly rubbing it on her arm whilst watching TV and then just had a bald patch on her arm for a while 😅

Get a veriety pack of blades online and get an ajustible safety razor with at least 3 -6 settings. That way you can try some good blades and many different ones and find what works best for you. And you can dial in the aggressiveness, from mild to aggressive. That can help with those problem areas. For me it's the neck, I need less aggressive, so I bought an adjustible. And I found some really sharp nice blades and differnet kinds of steel, which can be softer than stanless, which is a stiffer metal and that may be your issue and may help. Shark makes many different kinds of steel blades, so get a variety pack with some different Shark brand models in them. I havfe 3 and they are very nice, all of them. But the softer steel one is quite nice, very comfortable and no nicks for me.

safety razors don't have the same aggressiveness. your safety razor is probably too aggressive. i think a milder safety razor is especially better for the body, because you are less likely to cut yourself when holding it at the wrong angle. someone already mentioned the Henson AL13, which seems like a good one as it doesn't cut when holding it at the wrong angle, according to the reviews i've seen

  • @corycg9624

Whenever you’re shaving with a safety razor you have to hold it at a 360 degree angle because a cartridge razor is adjusted to a 360 degree angle it is a learning curve but once you get use to using one it gets easier

There's a tonne of tutorials here on UA-cam. There's a whole big shave culture around these razors. it's fun actually. This isn't just shaving, it's an art. It actually makes you think about how you shave. How your hair works, what directions it goes etc. You have to get a technique down. There are many tips and tricks, angle and pressure being thre two big ones. But after that it's mostly about what blades work for you, comfort wise and shave gels, soaps, oils or foams.
Don't be afraid to try many brands, variety packs are sold online, get one of those, I highly recommend that. Then pick a few favourites from that. That can be fun really, very explorative. Some blades are an absolute dream to use. Just glide through hair like it wasn't even there.

You are missing lots of tricks. First, use a quality tallow based shave soap like Cella, Williams, etc.applied with a boar brush . Second, use a mild blade. Third use a shallow shave angle (i.e. riding the cap). Watch a man shave his face with a safely razor.
