Being able to completely change the lighting in a location is one of the fundamental skills needed in cinematography. Sometimes you need to use lighting to hide part of a location or make it look like a different space altogether. Having a few basic lighting setups to start from will help you better shape the lighting of a location to suit your story. Today, director of photography Dave Cortez teaches us how to create three different looks with one setup, using different light modifiers and color temperature.
In this video, Dave shows us how to create three different narrative looks in one setup. For the first look, he motivates light from the window in frame, creating a cool evening look. For the second look, he adds a soft key light to create a higher key scene. For the third look, he uses warmer light to create a golden hour setting.
The main techniques we will be discussing today are for lighting for your background, motivating light from practicals, and using white balance to adjust your lighting. Lighting for your background is when you expose for the background first, and then light your subject. This way you can have the most control over the light separation between foreground and background. Motivating light from practicals is when you use things like lamps and windows in your scene to determine where light is coming from. Using white balance to adjust your lighting is when you use the settings in the camera to help make a scene feel warmer or colder overall, without having to gel your lights.
Ultimately, as filmmakers we are constantly creating illusions. Lighting is a big way you can make these illusions more believable. Different stories call for different lighting effects, and being able to create a number of different effects in the same location will make you a better storyteller. The best way to do this is to find a location and try lighting it as many different ways as you can. That way you can learn through practice, and it might just inspire your next film.

Godox sl60w, came tv Boltzen 60w fresnel, and an Aputure light storm ls 1s. I spotted the Boltzen on a wall through some Rosco urban vapor as well as a gobo I made on location, then bounced the Lightstorm off of the ceiling to fill in the moonlight, then finally motivated my sl60w key light from a $2 led Edison bulb hooked up to a homemade dimmer.

My favorite thing about this channel has become watching Valentina become more and more confident/comfortable as the host. Ted was the reason I got into this channel, but I really do love Valentina's energy & personality in the newer videos. Content is always great, but just so nice to see how she is able to play off of the guests with her charismatic delivery.

One suggestion for future when showing the recaps would be to include the WB, ISO and aperture settings used to get that look.

    • @sbozinovic
      @sbozinovic 4 роки тому +6

Since they are using the lighting, iso depends on the camera used and it's dr, apreture is related to it (and set according to the brightness of background (window). Everything else is lighted to match that aperture. WB is dependent of the color of the lighting fixtures (5600 or 6500k probably since it is a d300) except for the night shot (that is described in the video). They could've go for a specific aperture, but it would envolve nd filters and such and this vidio is not about that.

Comment question: Last few times I have been lighting people for interviews I have used the 120Dii through a shower curtain as the key. The shadows were already filled enough by how wrappy the light was. I then used a few tiny led panels in the background for pops of light on background objects.
Really enjoying this style of video, I can never get enough of lighting tutorials as its such a complex thing to learn on your own, but the Aputure breakdowns really show it in an easy way to understand and learn and be inspired from.

Last time I shot a conversation between three community activists at a local art studio. I used two Aputure 120d Mark II lights and placed a large diffuser in front of the lights. The art studio had sky light windows where natural light changed dramatically and affected the space. I used the two 120d at full power and I was able to keep the exposure the same despite the fact that the recording was just before sunset. My current kit includes three 120d Mark II and two brand new 300d Mark II. I just love them so much just ordered my third 300d Mark II! If Ann Liebowitz can have so many Aputure lights, I can as well!
I love those videos you put together for us. They are great to show how those awesome lights can be used. Thank you for all your hard work.

Recently, I shot a interview with a West African rapper Ndong Essinga.its scheduled to air on the Underground 6ystem Show.
I used just 1 of my two 120d Mark 2 and a light done 2 with the grid. This was the first time using this set up. I used the heavier diffusion cloth.
The look was really cool! It was very soft. We used the white wall to bounce some light to fill some of the shadow side.
What I learned is that I can achieve a pretty nice look with one fixture if the light is placed properly.

Thanks Valentina for this video. I would have a request, if possible of course. Lighting up a static scene, thanks to your advice, is relatively simple. But what happens where there are camera movements? Suppose the camera moves around the subject; it is inevitable that the cameraman passes in front of the lights, in the same way it can happen that some unwanted accessories enter the scene. Or, another example: there are scenes in wide angle, where the environment is very wide and I don't think that the lights on the subject are really positioned so far from the actor. I know this is beyond the concept of lighting, but it would be interesting to know what to do in these cases.

I love the tip of changing white balance in camera to create mood. On a few occasions, I actually inadvertently set the "wrong" white balance for where I was shooting. Yet, I noticed how WB could be used in post for setting the mood. Love those happy accidents.

I worked on a music video a few weeks ago where we were in a living room during the day and wanted it to look like golden hour. We had a 120d mkii and a few rgb tube lights. After literally trying to cover all the windows with every scrap of CTO we had, we realized it just didn't work. What we ended up doing was shooting the 120d mkii in the ceiling with full CTB on it. Then we set the camera kelvin/white balance to around 7000k. (similar to what you all did in this video) Then end result actually looked pretty good. The outside went orange and the actors looked like they were in a neutral color light. Golden hour interior with one light!!! Live and learn. :)

I use the Godox SL-150W, 2 Yongnuo light wands, 2 Neewer LED lights, reflector diffuser and bed sheet. I taped the reflector diffuser to a window and cast a soft warm rim light camera right, used the SL-150W as the key with a 60” octobox, had to block off 1/3 of the box because it was too hot on the table closer to the light. There was a soft practical in the back, camera left which I should have swapped out the bulb for, but didn’t realize until this video. I also lit the background with an Apurture AL-M9 Amaran!

In my kit are 2 x 120d mkII lights. Last project I used one outside with a reflector to simulate the moon and the other inside on a 7" reflector bouncing into a 5-in-1 soft white reflector mounted in the corner of a ceiling. Color temp on the camera was lowered to simulate the cool temp of moonlight, a fog machine was used to add atmosphere and "light streaks" through the blinds, and a desat color grade was applied to help sell the moonlight effect. Project was a child being super excited for her climbing adventure, so she was up at 3am to wake up dad so they could hit the road.

My current kit is comprised of a Aputure 120D, Aputure 672C and a couple of Wescott 10" Flexlites which I use for my 3-point lighting setups.
Yesterday I shot a vertical video social media piece using the 120D and Light Dome II (which I love) with 2 stop diffusion, 672C with EZ-Box and 35 degree grid and lastly a Westcott Flexlite. There was already a large window with sheers to the right providing a lot of level so I placed the 120D with Light Dome II at max output on the right of camera to add a bit more light wrap on the talents face.
The 672C was used as a 3/4 backlight directly opposite the keylight. I set the colour temperature of the light to 3200K to give a bit of colour contrast in the scene and to match some of the tungsten spotlights in the background. Lastly the Westcott Flexlite was used to add a bit of shape to a product in the background of the shot, just to give it a bit more of a defined edge.
    ---------------------------
I've really been enjoying these light setup breakdowns guys and I've learned a lot from them! Look forward to the future tutorials!

In my lighting kit I have a 120D ii and the lighdome ii, with several Torch LED's and also Dracast panel LED's. Every since adding the 120D into my kit, I use that exclusive as my primary light. It's the most effective light I've used, and the dome ii is the easiest travel diffusion as well. I used this light last for a travel shoot at a concert to capture the story of an artist. it was crucial because I used v mounts to power the light, and needed to be able to travel light via plane for everything. It worked perfectly! Also, the CTO holder in the dome was a perfect addition for the temp of the room.

I think the best use of my Aputure lights so far has been using an F7 as an on-camera light for a dinner party. Light was extremely low but the color temp adjust-ability allowed me to keep the ambiance of the room while still getting enough light on people and objects. And today im prepping the same setup for event coverage at a club.

Love the video! My light kit is one Lupo Superpanel Full Color 60 (usually as a key because of its natural softness, but it's nice to have every color of the rainbow as well as lighting effect presets all in one fixture), two GVM 50RS either for fill or for exposing backgrounds with fun colors, a 4x4 bead board (sometimes used for soft fill) with shiny side (for reflecting the sun and blasting it through windows), a 2x2 bead board (small fill) with shiny side, and three Yongnuo YN360 light wands. I love placing the wands on the ground especially during walking shots. They're great for illuminating backgrounds or for tying to C Stands to make helicopter rigs. It's nice to have RGB control over all of my lights, but I'm hoping to snag one or two 300D mark 2s very soon as I currently don't have a light that can punch through a window.
Thanks for the great video Apurture!!

In my kit, I have an Aputure 120t, a Came TV Boltzen, a Torch LED, a mini Ikan cold shoe light, a Lowel Pro, and a Flex light. I’ve had some cool lighting setups before, however I’d say my most interesting was when I was DP for a shoot that took place in the woods. I brought all the lights mentioned, but forgot batteries! And of course, there are no outlets in the woods. What did we do?? We collected everyone on sets phone and used their flashlights as well as a cars headlights to light our actors. Interesting to say the least, but it ended up looking pretty good😂 We used the same trick of changing the white balance to make the super orange car lights look blue, so seeing that in this episode was super cool 😎

I love this kind of content -- it's always a great resource to see how other DP's light their scenes. A valuable learning tool to learn from others specially when you're a solo operator.
I shot a 1 minute fashion last week and used three Aputure 120D mk II's. One as a key, one with a space light modifier and one as a with 0 modifier bouncing off the ceiling. Since for many of the shots, the model was modeling near or atop a bed. We hazed the room a bit, and added 6 Aputure AL-MW's under the bed (held up under the bed frame with velcro straps) to give the scene some depth and separation. It was a lovely shoot and the Aputure lights withstood the rediculous heat that was in the room. Love your products!

The last project was an interview and i use two light setup, i use sl100, one as a key light with softbox and another as a backlight .
So we got nice shadow on the face with key light and outline the subject so it look separate
    from the background.
we use rode wireless mic as an audio.

I just got done filming an interview style video with a 300D as my main key, 3 Amaran lights as fill, hair, and a practical on a lamp with the orange gel to make the lamp look brighter on our subjects face. as for backing the church had 15 LED moving head lights hanging from the truss system that we made blue and also had tungsten 42in moons on the background as bokeh, and fogged the room out. Raised the white balance to warm up the key lights and it turned out great! It was almost a teal and orange look.

I only have an Amaran AL-M9 and using it to light details shot for events specially wedding. I love this light because it’s so light and compact. Light up our shot well and also use it as a fill light on my wall for my youtube videos. Peace! Cheers!

I used the Aputure 120d mark ii outside to mimic the sun coming in through some windows for some interiors. That thing has some real punch for how small it is. Cant wait to get my hands on the 300 d II... or like in this video 4 of them lol

Currently, I own a 120dii, light dome ii, and I just recently got the lantern. Outside of Aputure I own a Hive 100-C Wasp for RGB controls. The 300dii is next on my list. I recently had two different shoots in the same studio space. The first time they let me bring my own lights. The second time they insisted that we use their options. I'm a big fan of Aputure with all of the versatility they afford me, but I humored them and tried out their Jokers and LiteMat 4x4 as my key light instead of a 300d. After using their stuff, I'm even more convinced of using Aputure products. The bowens s mount is a dream so I can shape one light quickly with many different options. My go-to on the first studio shoot was the studio's space lights through a 12x12 in the ceiling. Then I put a 300d with the reflector on through an 8x8 cloth as my key. (it was much more even than the Jokers), and a light dome on a 120dii and use as a hair light. That usually gets things pretty close to how I want them for a simple even studio cyc shoot.

In my kit, I have 2x120dii, Light dome mkii, mini light dome mkii, 4x4ft quasar science crossfade tube lights, 2x2ft quasar science crossfade, M9, Fresnel lens mk1, and am currently waiting for my 300dii to ship from a preorder! I have used this kit to light music videos, short films, documentaries, and corporate videos (interviews etc). I use them in various ways depending on what is called for. Key, fill, hair/rim, and lighting backgrounds! I cant wait to use all of this with my new 300dii in late August on my first indie feature film!!! LOVE what you guys do! KEEP IT UP! #aputure4life

My current kit consists of: 300d + 300d II + 120d II + HR672WWS LED kit + various modifiers (favs being light dome + light dome mini II).
One of my last setups: [hotel room - 10pm] we needed the lighting to look like early morning so I went 300d w/ Fresnel + CTO through a 4x4 scrim jim (1-1/4 stop) for ambient. HR672S full blast cut with flags to mimic sun through the curtains.
On the same project, we needed to portray the power flickering & eventually going out (backup generator company). 300d w/ Space Light for ambient fill. 120d II w/ TV effect for added texture to the scene. On que we had grip unplug the alarm clock (plug it back in) to simulate power flickering whilst another person adjusted the intensity of the 120d II for added flicker effect before the inevitable power failure. great project & glad i had the chance to utilize the majority of my kit in one project.

In my kit there is: 2x Aputure 120d II and Amaran AL-MW (and soon I will also take 300d II)
I usually use 1 120d II for ambient light and the other to create visual effects that can be lightning for example. AL-MW is fantastic and I use it to create light where I can't use 120d II because it's bulky. For example, to create a fantasy effect, I put it in a book and at the opening you see this beautiful light coming out.
I really like shooting night scenes, which is why I usually use a 120d II in the blue gel window, a 120d II in the interior with soft warm light, creating a nice contrast on the face and AL-MW positioned inside the bedside lamps (as you showed in your videos).
I also want to add that AL-MW use when I create rain effect because it has IP68 certification; in short, I use it in the rain for thunder effect.
The Aputure equipment is so incredible that I don't use anything else anymore.

I use 2 Aputure tri-8's. I usually do talking head interviews so I'll shine one of them off-camera on a subject through a sheet of loose bleached muslin hanging from a c stand. I use a simple photography reflector on the white side to bounce a bit of light opposite side fo the face. I use the 2nd tri-8 to put some light on the background. It's not the prettiest setup but it works. I do run into some trouble if there is a window I can't block out though. Those lights aren't the strongest.

One 300D (missed the II update) as a key with the Dome and the two Intellytech L-160s Kit (that I can keep separated for Fill and Back, but I am thinking of combining as - one - big fill and getting a 120 for any backlight I need to do... shooting in a small theater space with a few actors and I can take advantage of the existing Tungsten to light my background and keep my LEDs for the actors in the foreground.

So far, I got one light that I got from a giveaway at NAB. Its a Manfrotto Lumimuse 8. And the way I used it on a short 5- minute project I did was as a key light. For the scene I used it, the room was full of windows and the sun acted as my fill light. So I hid the Lumimuse behind some of the set dressing, using the different levels of brightness depending on the distance, and I also used some gaffers tape to put it on the wall when there was nothing to hide it behind.

My lighting kit consists of a Aputure 120D(key), Godox SL60W(fill), Powerextra 1296 (rim) bicolor led panel, 2 x Yongnuo ICE wands.
For lighting modifiers I have the light dome, the 2x fresnel, barndoors.
I used to own a couple old arri fresnel 1k, 650w, and 150w and I'm not really a fan of tungsten hot lights anymore now that LEDs are lighter, draw less power, and are less hot. I wanted to buy lights that served multiple purposes and not only one so I am slowly replacing those out with COB led lights with bowens mount.
One of the main reasons I love using the aputure's accessories is because its universally accepted on lights with bowens mount. I use the light dome and 120D on lots of corporate interviews. With corporate interviews I usually have a total of 3 lights. A 120d with a dome as the key. LED panel cross lighting the side where camera is going for subtle fill. And then the godox sl60w with fresnel 2x and barn door attachment as the hair light. The output of the fresnel 2x is amazing that I use it with aputure or the godox light in music videos where I need streaks of hard spotty light combined with the aputure barn doors and haze. Sometimes if I don't have the dome I will use the fresnel and a 24x36 silk to pull off the same effect.
Currently waiting on my order of the 300d ii and the aputure lantern as they will be a great accessory in my lighting kit for my short films and music videos!

    My lighting/grip kit is:
3x1000W Ianro red heads ($200 for the set including case, stands, and scrims)
4x1000W Par cans modified with baby pin recievers (got them for like $25 each, made a lot of sense)
A genuine mess of extension cables,
1 CAME-TV panel w/ 512 LEDs that they no longer sell,
    1 neewer CN-160,
Three 5-in-1 reflectors of varying sizes,
    1 improvised 4'x8' flop (DIY frame+blackout curtain+self-adhesive velcro+sewing skills)
    a 4'x4' sheet of 250 grid
    1 C-stand,
    5 regular stands,
and a whole mess of correction and party gels that live in what I call my "candy crate".
I use these tools in all kinds of configurations, but my favourite setup in recent memory was when we needed to do night-for-day on an interior at the end of a shoot.
We were shooting our talent through a doorway in the house that had an exterior door with a semi-circle window visible in the background.
I placed one of the middle diffusion sections of the 5-in-1 reflectors in the semi-circle door window, and blasted that with an LED panel to give a blown-out sky kinda look.
Then, I placed one of my par cans on a stand facing the wall beside a window that we had seen in previous shots with a frosted CTB gel on it, and used that to emulate the look of a hard afternoon sun coming in through our window.
Moving into our foreground, I kicked one of my redheads off of the ceiling with a 1/2CTB, and used that as both a general wash, and a key that ended up feeling pretty nice on our lead talent. With the camera at ~4300K, our lens wide-open, and an ISO sitting around 1250, it matched up with out reverse shot (actually shot in the late afternoon because shooting around turnarounds is fun) really well.
I have an incredibly oversaturated frame grab from it on my instagram here:

I only had the Amaran F7. We wanted to create a rotating scene that looks as though the light was spinning around the product. Instead of rigging the camera on the table, we rigged the F7 and spinned it instead. That way, we didn't have moving background and put more focus to the product.

Hi, thank you for all the help! I am a bit at a loss about sound recording for Indi filming. I hear quite a bit about mics, cables, cameras and recorders. I rarely get much info about the right way to do it. I'm lead to think that either I put each multi mic into its own separate camera, or its own recorder, or maybe a laptop on budget. Usb, multi track programs, rode wireless, syncing?
I feel the audio recording multi track recorders and syncing have always been far behind video innovation. How can I record multi separate audio tracks in a film? Should I buy the rode lavaiers , record quality into my Cannon, use a separate audio recorder for each vocal?
Is sending audio to a laptop the same as a Tascam in quality? It's going into my computer to edit right?
I've seen no audio video on UA-cam that simply explain how to record separate mics to separate tracks in a drive of any kind. Seems even 8- Tracks only can record 2 channels at once right? Please help us!
    Thank you!

I've had to employ a 6x6' silk on a corner-reinforced 6' PVC pipe rig that I've cut and glued to be easily disassembled/reassembled for transport to location. Total cost was a few PVC pipes and the silk, but it's easily rigged up on two stands and used to soften any harsh backlight from the sun on exterior shoots. It's cheap, but it does get the job done.
