I Think it is in La La Land when sebastian is playing piano at the restaurant and the lights changes in the middle of the scene to a hard light in sebastian playing. It's fenomenal when they used the hard light to bring all the attention to him! when they had the hard light, sebastian is the meaning of the scene but when the lights of the restaurant came back to normal, he is just an ordinary artist.
The church shot in Kendrick Lamar’s music video for “Humble” has stuck with me ever since I first saw it. That music video opened up so many perspectives for me in terms of lighting, camera work, visual effects, and so on, but that church shot with the huge light shaft coming down on him through a window was just so stunning.
Roger Deakins using hard light in Blade runner 2049. There was the one scene where they were walking down the hallway and the geometric shadows unfolded/slid along. That whole shot was so nuanced and deliberate. And also the water caustics he used against the walls to add fluid texture to those flat walls when that one girl was leaving the room. That movie is a Masterclass on how a Cinematographer can add a significant syrupy layer of added artistic depth to the story and to the world created. I sincerely enjoy these types of uploads. 😎👊
Slick video! The use of the 18x24 silk was a gorgeous way of combining hard and soft light. Favorite hard light scene: Blade Runner when Deckard is interviewing Rachel. The noir feel is spot on and the natural motivation for the haze (cigarette smoke) was great. Keep it up A Team! 👍
The beginning scene of Sicario where they shine light through the bullet holes in the building they are raiding really adds to the suspense of the situation. And obviously Deakins is the man!
MY FAVORITE HARD LIGHT example is from the end of "Annihilation" when Natalie Portman's character is climbing down the tunnel from the lighthouse into the cave where the center of the shimmer is morphing. Her complete silhouette, cautiously but too-curiously finding it's way against the alien rippled texture, and some atmospheric haze, is haunting and captivating. A great film all-around. Thanks for this video!
Wonderful video! My favourite scene of using hard and soft light is from the movie 'Chicago', when Roxie Hart is performing the song 'The Name on Everyone's Lips'. I love that scene because of their shaping of lighting. The entire frame is pitch dark with just one character having a hard backlight, and a soft frontal fill. The character is dancing and is moving throughout the frame, interacting with mirrors and other things and not once has the light spilt over anything else in the frame. The shaping of the light, the selection of other materials (pentablack or some other non reflective black material), the consistency of the light even when the character is moving throughout the stage was just a mesmerizing experience for me. And as said in the video, hard backlight always looks good! It gives that glamorous look to the character perfectly in this scene.
The exterior shots in the Fall (2006) are incredible! The hard light used in the story sequence offset the softer lights in the real world setting. Absolutely love Tarsem Singh and Colin Watkinson’s work on this film.
I don't know if it have been used in a movie before but here's a scene. We see a character (villain) being backlight by a hard source and then to reveal him another character comes near him in the frame and acts as a bounce to light his face. To tie everything together haze or fog can be used. This can be a very exciting way to reveal the character. Great tutorial and keep up the good work A-Team.
Favorite example of hard light is from Hugo - specifically the scenes in the movie theaters where the hard lights are the movie projectors. Not only is it a great use of hard light through haze, but it also enhances the story.
Drive (2011). In this movie, hard light is used in many scenes - especially in the car. But also in the elevator scene, where hard light is used to guide your focus around.
Great video! My favorite example of hard light is in aki kaurismaki’s films. He almost never uses soft light. That means he uses hard light as a key. But he uses it so good, that his actors still look beautiful. U can see their flaws, but who cares. They look more human like this (in my opinion). Kaurismaki himself also said he wants to make honest movies. I think his lighting is honest. So if I had to pick one example from the past 5 years, it would be from the other side of hope in the restaurant. The lighting is very well motivated from the windows, and the scenes there are very well lit, with hard light.
One of my favorite examples of hard light is in Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark when the sun shines through that hole to that map in that cave. I haven't seen the film in years but that is a really memorable example for me. It also is a little volumetric as well. Keep up the great work!
Really liking the use of that silk on a single source to make it pull double duty. I love the hard lighting that's used throughout Black Hawk Down. The Irene scene (kickoff of the mission) is fantastic.
Excellent tut! As someone who often works with speed lights for photos and the MX's, M9's, F7's, and as of today the MW, knowing how to modify small, hard light sources, is key to my work flow. Thank you Aputure for providing us run and gunners crazy good little lights!
My favourite example of hard light in a movie in the past 5 years is in the latest Halloween (2018) movie... When Michael Myers is going through the small back alley of a random woman's house right before killing her (while she doesnt even see him coming) there is a hard light (with its source apparently low positioned) casting the shadow of Michael on the white wall as he walks on by (but you dont see him directly) and the closer he gets to entering the house and killing her the bigger his shadow become, showing how big of a threat he is, an unstopable specter that knows how to walk unseen towards his prey, needing rarely to run around (the shadow was probably used as a metaphor, to give the idea he is more than a simple man that could be stopped by common methods, and that he can go anywhere and get to anyone he wants to), and also of course the poor lady unexpected doom. All of that unconsciously absorbed by the spectator mind thanks to such simple although very strategic use of hard lighting.
I'd have to say one of my favourite examples of hard light in film from the last 5 years is in Green Room from 2015. The way they motivated from practicals to give texture to the world is just beautiful, but if we have to get specific, there's a scene about 53 minutes in that takes place out in the main hall of their location that is primarily lit with "moonlight" that just screams classic horror while doing a really effective job of teaching you the geometry of the location for a later confrontation. It's an absolutely excellent movie if you can stomach the violence.
Great video and tips. Favorite hard light example: The Revenant, when the character is walking in the snow and being completely backlit by the sun with the sun in frame.
My favorite using of hard light is a little bit older. it is in The master when Freddie sets with Lancaster in a table and the harsh light tells you how intense the situation is.
Awesome video guys as always. Now for one of my favorite dark hard light scenes would have to be from the movie Riddick. When the team had to fight their way through the monsters in the rain and in the dark back to their ship.
Nice video! I like this format. Favorite hard light: the inital scene from 007 - Casino Royale when one lamp light both the men in the room, it is perfect for the mood of the scene, a spy story.
The lighting of MI:Fallout in the underground scene. The change in lighting and the hardness of the lights in the second scene really drive the suspense from the twist.
Some very recent movies that I've seen with hard light done well would be. Bird Box, especially everytime the sun pours through a window. They emphasis the danger of seeing. And I actually liked the lighting in Venom. Story aside, the lighting was really cool. Lots of dark scenes with strong hard light to guide the viewer.
Matthew Libatique actually shot Venom, and he's an amazing cinematographer. He's also the cinematographer behind Black Swan and A Star is Born! So there's every reason to dig the cinematography.
Personally, I love the shot from LaLaLand, when Emma Stone's character Mia enters the Jazz Bar and she sees Sebastian playing the piano for the first time. The whole scene goes dark, except a single spotlight that is shining down on Seb from above. It's just great storytelling.
I actually like Michael Bay's use of hard light quite a bit. He seems to be very good at using it at the right time in the right way. The iconic dolly pan around + up from Bad Boys 2 stands out to me.
Has to be fight club when Tyler Durden is laying down the rules for it, or any scene in that movie for that matter since much of it was hard lighting other than Edward Norton's pre burnt house. They also used a lot of rim lighting to make the character pop without having to light him very much from the front, something I noticed after watching this video!
It's not from the past 5 years, but my favourite hard lighting scene by far is the scene where the fellowship of the ring runs away from the Balrog and Gandalf falls in the Lord of the Rings.
We want to see a mini noir film, how to light, i suggest you create A small feature noir film, so we will be to see how to create this mode, and also how to keep visual continuty when you change camera angles or when you do blocking for your scenes
put more videos about light setups . but more wide frames . like if a film scene is where family is sitting on sofa near wall . its not dark moody shot . so how to make it look interesting .
This Catacombs shootout scene from John Wick 2 has some fantastic lighting design, like the hard light pooling through the ceiling to form shafts to add depth and scale to the scene, underlighting with gels to add eerieness, beams from flashlights being used to add to what little light is offered in the scene, and volumetric lighting galore. ua-cam.com/video/u3OvrLe_eNo/v-deo.html As for a question, what are your favorite hazers to use on set?
I know godfather is an obvious choice, but coming to the recent times Quentin Torantino's movies, shot by Robert Richardson uses perfect hardlight and use of perfect bounce, example the room scene in the hateful eight. #apurture #AmaranMX
my favorite scene that use hard light is the blue cut train robbery scene from the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford that scene use the hard light motivated by the light coming from the train. what a beautiful scene
Prisoners (Roger Deakins) - Scene when cops surround the crashed RV and arrest the initial suspect, by the gas station. Gas station lights, cop car lights, flashlights and smoke from crashed RV silhouette all foreground subjects dramatically: ua-cam.com/video/02m2C06dOP8/v-deo.html
I am submitting The Raid: Redemption (2014) as a movie whose use of hard light is constant and motivated from toplight hard sources as seen in hallway fight ua-cam.com/video/3hYsVqpiEa4/v-deo.html and in the intro scene as Rama trains in early morning light peeking through. ua-cam.com/video/KtXBUqqRbzY/v-deo.html This use of hard light mirrors the hard reality that the main character is in as soon as he steps into the apartment complex.
C'est agaçant ces plans d'illustration qui ne durent qu'une seconde, alors que le bla-bla-bla dure, dure, dure... la négation même du cinéma. Et, en plus, Aputure, c'est cher.
It’s true that hardlight looks good with haze, but haze doesn’t fit just any scene. In fact it’s a sign of low budget movie, making haze to mask poor production design :)
What is your favorite example of hard light in a movie or TV show in the past 5 years?

Generally Deakins' use of hard light is phenomenal. I'd say I love it the most in the opening scene of Sicario
You should win haha. I was thinking of that too. Good choice!
I agree. Great example, and one of my favorite films of all time. You should win.
Excellent note of the naturally-motivated haze!
The beginning scene of Sicario where they shine light through the bullet holes in the building they are raiding really adds to the suspense of the situation. And obviously Deakins is the man!
True. That sticks out in my head too. I was blown away (pun intended). It was so good.
Digital Ninja® right!
Really love how you guys break down the live scene, well done editing
Wonderful video!

Bridge of Spies had great backlit moments using hard light. Really nicely done

Seeing the imperfections within the faces of your subjects can make for a very emotionally moving visual! Great point!
One of my favorite examples of hard light is in Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark when the sun shines through that hole to that map in that cave. I haven't seen the film in years but that is a really memorable example for me. It also is a little volumetric as well. Keep up the great work!

You speak The Truth, James!
Awesome video! My favorite example would be from the Third Man. The final chase scene throughout Vienna's sewers cannot be beat!
Great video, once again!!;) T2 when Arni is walking down the hallway of the mental institute on the way to breakout Sara.

The epilouge in La La Land where Sebastian is playing piano used hard light beautifully.
Nice video! I like this format. Favorite hard light: the inital scene from 007 - Casino Royale when one lamp light both the men in the room, it is perfect for the mood of the scene, a spy story.

Very helpful!
But when’s that RGB led y’all making coming out 🥺
Patience is a virtue!!! :P
Great video!
Favorite hard light scene : I would say Diplomatie, of Volker Schlöndorff, on the balcony.
太厉害了,真的很专业,很喜欢这种布光,很有氛围感

The iconic dolly pan around + up from Bad Boys 2 stands out to me.
That‘s a tough comment question! There are so many great ones! I think my favorite one is from IT. The scene where Pennywise kills Georgie.
Favorite hard light scene : Climax of the movie Seven, in the movie Chekka chivantha Vaanam and in Aayirathil Oruvan
where do u announce the winner of the giveaway?
Please discuss difference between fog and haze. Different machines. And how to light it! Spielberg uses that a lot.
"Psst... Scott..."

Light Leaks Thats what i had asked for.. Thanks guys i didnt know the right word for it.. now i know its hard light before the subject :)

I’m waiting your video for long time
I have A question Suppose that you do not have a Window in your scene how you will mimic that your hard ligh is coming from the back
Nice video
Hey! It's the guy from Indy Mogul!
Roger Deakins using hard lighting and silhouettes in the opening scene of Skyfall
In Mad Max Fury Road, mostly day chase scenes, one night scene also where Furiosa and Max Runs in the truck and Immortan Joe's army chases them.
Nice 👍
This segment really went hard... Lol. Thank! #Aputurehardlights
zing!
Great! Good to know.✌️
It's not from the past 5 years, but my favourite hard lighting scene by far is the scene where the fellowship of the ring runs away from the Balrog and Gandalf falls in the Lord of the Rings.
Alien. The original. Lots of great hard light scenes, but I like the last stand scene.
Madam is Very very Creative & Great DOP Nice Lights Effects This is Azlan Arain khan Cinematographer Bollywood.

As for a question, what are your favorite hazers to use on set?
Chivo using the sun to create the visceral, gruesome reality of the characters in The Revenant.
Godfather movies (in Don corleone's office)
Ted is so handsome omg

Anything from Michael Bay.

Depends on the conceptual design of the film, tsawyer!
Aputure Sure thing :) It’s ok if used for purpose, not just for the sake of it, cause it looks cool.
She looks like Lindsay Lohan
