My breeder recommended necks to treat anal gland issues

The only reason I can see for that would be the increased calcium content we see in turkey necks creating harder stools to expel the anal gland contents. They should still be no more than 50% of the overall bone content in the diet to avoid thyroid issues.

Can you tell me if the risk of paralysis is less in freeze dried chicken necks ? Got my dog some . She loves them and needs the dental benefits. But now I’m scared to feed her more because I can’t find a source stating that freeze drying kills campylobacter , which causes the paralysis. My dog is a 6 pound mini chi weenie . I want to help with her teeth because she is EXTREMELY difficult with teeth brushing .I pay a small fortune each year with dental cleaning.

Can I remove the thyroid gland with poultry shears before feeding? -- Either by cutting off that end of the neck bone altogether or by cutting into the soft tissue and excising it. I have a 14 pound, miniature poodle so, because of his small size, am very limited in safe bone choices. The neck vertebrae seem to clean his teeth much better than a chicken wing. I'd have to brush up on my endocrinology but pretty sure that the thyroid secretes an inactive form that has to be converted in other organs to the active form. Also thinking that avian form of pre-active thyroid hormone probably not a substrate for mammalian enzymes to covert to active hormone-- I could definitely be wrong but these are my thoughts and I will do some literature research and get back to you. I might try to correspond with Karen Becker on this.
My poodle eats commercial raw with ground bone and gently cooked, homemade recipes all with human grade, fresh ingredients and very low carb, grain-free variety. And, despite me brushing his teeth twice a day and getting him an annual anesthesia deep clean, his teeth would accumulate brown plaque fast. I did not have this big a problem with my previous miniature poodles. Anyway, the plaque convinced me to get over my fears and give him bones. The duck and chicken necks proved to be amazing and one duck neck removed the brown plaque on his back teeth that even my dental instruments failed to do. The necks work much better for the teeth than the wings and feet.

When you feed turkey wings, do you remove the skin?

I would recommend not feeding cooked. Ones at all. There are lots of good cooked diets out there from people like Dr. Judy Morgan that utilize bone meal.

The cooking is not good even for ground bone according to Dr. Karen Becker because it cross links the structure making it harder for the dog to absorb the nutrients. Grinding it makes it useless for teeth cleaning. Rice is just sugar and has no place in a canine diet and neither does coconut oil. All the hype about coconut oil being good for a dog is BS.

What about smoked turkey necks for dogs? And can they chew on the bone? Or just the meat?

I’m 100% against all smoked bones. Lots of people do it but to me it’s an unnecessary risk.

What are the best raw meaty bones for small breed dogs?

Feet and wings are some of my favorites.

I have a 6 lb dog so chicken necks and chicken feet are the only parts she can eat. I rotate giving only 1 per day so she gets no more then 3 necks in a week, do you think that is too much? I really don't want to get a grinder so I can use other raw meaty bone if I don't jave to plus I like to feed whole raw meaty bones for dental and mental stimulation reasons.

First off, good on you for feeding whole for all the benefits you listed. Additionally, I think that you would do well by trying to incorporate the same parts you are talking about here but from other animals. I.E. instead of just chicken wings, consider adding duck wings, the tips of turkey wings, and so on.
