I bought one for my son for Christmas and was blown away by how good it sounded. As a touring bass player for 20 years, I kept thinking that I could easily go on stage with just this pedal going straight to FOH and be happy with my sound.
the thing is, there are people who absolutely toured with the POD X3 Live for example back in the day, and the quality of the amp models and effects in this are easily better. We arrived at the point some years ago where cheap modelers are good.
@@SisterRose Absolutely agree, yet many corksniffers poo poo these very capable budget zoom multifx pedals. I have this B1 four and the G1 four and they serve my recording, jamming, practicing and *gasp* live purposes 1000x over. Can't get any better for this money, I wish we had these around 20 years ago.
You can also use the USB port with a power bank to run it - which is what I do. Even a small one lasts for hours and saves having to have a power supply plugged into the mains.
A few years ago I was using Zoom B3 and that was fantastic pedal! It has a lot of sounds you'll not find in other multi-effects (different synths, octavers, filters, fretless effect etc). Yeah, not all of the effects are great but mostly really good ones. + looper, + tuner, + that one was working as a audio interface.
I have the zoom ms60b, i think most of the built effects are the same, I always encourage people to buy one cause they're so useful no matter what the rest of your pedal setup is, or if you have none at all it's a great way to try out a bunch of different things
Vielen dank, boys, a fair review. I got this in the covid boredom but didn’t really appreciate it until my guitarist got one - he raved about the VFm, ease of use and the sounds and he even uses it for guitar at practices now and then. The fact he normally uses a Line6 Helix but was still raving about this pedal made me sit up and pay more attention to what it can do. It’s not faultless, but it’s light/cheap and can easily get put through the PA for those gigs when you just want to get on public transport with just your bass.
the best thing about this pedal - which i wish i still owned! - is how ridiculously customisable it is. if you don't like some of the patches you can easily tweak them so they're more usable, but the way you can create your own is also so cool. plus it's a perfect little practice pedal, given the headphone out and aux in
I have this pedal, and use it for almost everything I record (except for an acoustic fretless Bass, which is straight into the board.) Not so much for its FX, but its amp simulations. I find I use the first 2 settings the most!
I have several Zoom products, (last year I got the B9.1ut; amazing. It's the main reason why I'm not getting the newer B6), and had numerous generations of their lower priced bass multis. I got this last year and returned it the next day! First Zoom product I didn't like! Too many similar sounds, (more than usual, I felt). I have the B1xON which I use for busking and it's great! I might be in the minority not liking the B1xFour, but different strokes for different folks! Still love your reviews and Bass Face kicks ass!
Thanks for the review. I always watch you videos which I find very informative. I own the Zoom B1 FOUR, same model without the expression pedal. I know for sure that you can listen to it by headphones. You can also connect to it an external music source and play along with it. Plus, and I think it's a Plus, you can power it via the USB port even with a power bank. At least it's what i do...
I agree this pedal is good for beginners. I had B1 and B3 and sold them. For bass I recommend Headrush MX5. Much better used interface, better sound quality and better connections options (fx send/return, additional pedal, etc.).
Just recently got the one without expression pedal, as I wanted a smaller and lighter pedal for practice. And that is a really nice practice tool! Output works well through the output. The only real disappointment is an absence of UNDO feature on the looper, which make is incomplete and not as good to use. Also, you can power it up with 5v micro USB cable.
I've never used a lot of pedals, other than the standard. However, I bought this, and I LOVE IT. It's a full clip, locked and LOADED! Thanks, my German Brother ❤
I love my Zoom B1 Four. I use it for home recording and making bass videos. Any sound I need is right in this pedal. I've only been using the presets and they sound great out of the box. It is intuitive and fairly easy to use. And for the price, you get a ridiculous amount of tone. Maybe next, I might move up to the B6.
I have the Guitar version - I really liked it at first as I'd been using the earlier G3 for years and the amp models just felt so much more alive. I'm actually a lot more excited about the bass version as I'd need less effects overall. You can actually swap models between them - I've been using the Ampeg model for Doom tones.
In direct competition to the B1on which is the predecessor to the B1x, I always would prefer the B1on. The sounds are much warmer and some of the better ones are not included in the B1x. Both have the biggest disadvantage in handling and recalling presets which is not intuitive and takes a lot of time in a live performance. Both have no dedicated bypass knob, you need to press both pedals to bypass - an absolute no-go. A solution could be to have 2 or more instances.
I had the old Zoom 505 (I think) it served me well, untill I heard upgraded models and then I quickly wanted to get rid of it. But that's what they are for. Beginners, or stop-gaps.
I have the B1 Four and the guitar version G1 Four, without expression pedal. Headphones work fine on the output jack, nothing to complain about. Shure, these devices don't sound like an Axe FX or Helix... but for the money they are great little gadgets and pack a lot of fun. I mainly use them as pratice tools with a focus on the amp and cab sims. Important to know for the G1 Four: you have to switch on the cab sims in the presets (in the B1 Four they are already switched on). Some of the presets aren't the best with the factory settings, you need to fiddle around a bit to make them sound good. These pedals could be powered by 4 AA batteries, 9V power supply (center negative) and even by USB (powerbank). Amp and cab sims, effects, drum tracks, aux in, looper and tuner - all I need.
I got the G1XFour after B1XFour - then I realised they are basically the same ... so I gave the G1XFour and a guitar to a young lad at our church after I worked out how to turn one into the other. ua-cam.com/video/lmNNdbnqz8c/v-deo.html My guess is it would be easier if we can change something in the firmware. But the above works. I use G5n with all that useful B1XFour FX plus some A1XFour - the nylon acoustic models sound quite good.
Long been a fan of the sound of the Zoom pedals. I have a B3N glued to my board! They sound a lot better and more realistic than most other bass multiFX, IMO. The problem for me is their usability in a rig, as the hardware and firmware is always crippled in some way. E.g. why are some of them not midi-controllable? This makes it hard to run units together. Why are others limited in the number of simultaneous FX models (or why is there not a model with more memory)? Why not allow parallel chains? Why did the B3N remove some of the awesome models from the original B3? Why is the desktop editing software for the B3 no longer supported? Why did the B3n remove bypass mixing from many of the models? Why do the equivalent guitar units have higher specs? I know, they're budget pedals... but it's frustrating because they don't sound like budget anything!
@@socialdef3 No offence, but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't really address my issues with the other Zoom pedals. The 'n is better in many ways, as far as I've been able to tell through in-store testing.

Great video review thank you. I purchased one and when it comes to the Octaver sound, I was surprised at how poor it tracks with this new model. It was going to replace my 708ii (which in my experience tracks and sounds as good as any octave pedal). Any response from ZOOM would be appreciated....

Partly as I'm a clumsy oaf with limited faff time I dislike this pedal, having to negotiate menu's drives me mad and then setting up my basic sound then having to select effects on the fly what could go wrong!!!
