This is Slipknot at their most streamlined. The production is more traditional, the songwriting doesn't have as many "weird" or "strange" moments, and the sound as a whole is practically mainstream metal. I get why some folks might not like it, considering where the band have come from, but I just think the songs and riffs are some of the band's best.

huge amount of credit goes to Sid for his contributions to the band’s sound, but don’t forget about Craig. a lot of the electronic elements actually come from him as well. they both make a great team and add that ambiance that makes Slipknot stand out from other metal bands. Sid does also add a lot of atmosphere with his turntables that isn’t in the form of the traditional scratching that we are used to hearing from him, more along the lines of sampling. all in all great album, and super underrated in my opinion. a lot of people seem to forget about or write this one off for some reason.

So after my friends had converted me to rock with Linkin Park, System, and Slipknot in high school, this album came out like a year later. Psychosocial was the lead single and god I played that song over and over again in repat for hours. The hype was real.
Unfortunately people were just really angry that Corey was singing more in Slipknot. My rock sensibilities had pretty much expanded so I was totally down for this, but some people were so mad 😅
I mean Snuff and Dead Momories are some of my favorite songs of all time just in general. Both which were also singles, which added fuel to the fire.
Found it funny that you said to Gehenna "this is more like it" that's easily my least favorite song in the album 😆😆

I'm a diehard fan of this album, I will never stop defending All Hope Is Gone! "Sulfur" is in my top 5 Slipknot songs, I love every song on this album. AHIG really doesn't deserve the hate it gets, I think people just want Iowa 2.0 so they sh*t on any subsequent album that doesn't match the insanity of the first 2 albums.
AHIG was the first Slipknot album I ever purchased, I discovered them a few months prior to AHIG being released, so I was super excited to go buy the CD on the day it came out! Great reaction as usual Molly! 🤘🤘🤙🤙

As a whole, I really like this album. The title track, however... I hate it. The verse is a total mess, the blast beats are so out of place against Corey's vocals and the guitar tracks... It's messy in a bad way, that's how I feel about it.
But yeah, Sulfur is great, Gehenna is a tasteful detour, Psychosocial is a total hook, Snuff is beautiful... It's great music, a really good album!

I don't hate this album as much as some fans do but compared to their first 3 albums this one just wasn't as good. Some of the heavier tracks on this are favorites of mine (Gematria, AHIG, This Cold Black) but some of the other songs have really cheesy hooks or lyrics that turn me off (Gehenna, Wherein Lies Continue, Snuff, Dead Memories). Unfortunately, this was the beginning of the end of Slipknot for me. I know some fans will hate me for that, but ever since this album their releases have been mixed bags that are a lot of filler, with little killer.

This is a bittersweet album, since it is the last one ever with the full lineup as Paul Gray died of an overdose in 2010 and Joey Jordison left and/or was fired a few years after that(and he died last year😞), one of the reasons for the long amount of time between studio releases. So any hope us fans had of a full reunion of the classic lineup (as close as possible without Gray anyway) really died with Jordison. Thus, the title of their next album is obviously an allusion to their fallen comrade.
Anyway; this isn't my favorite of theirs but it does have some classics like Sulfur, Psychosocial, Dead Memories and of course the song which officially clinched them as a great all-around band and not just metal to the mainstream in Snuff. Can't wait for your continued dig into the one and only Slipknot 🤘👍

ah yes the last album with the original 9 members :) Gehena and all hope is gone are also my two favourite tracks on this album.
By the way, from what I gathered about your music taste from your videos I would recommend you to react to Anaal Nathrakh (that is if you do not listen to them already). They have a lot of very chaotic songs and you like Converge so chaos must be your friend :D they also infuse a lot of industrial noise, which is probably also something that you like since you are a fan of Nine Inch Nails and their discography has a ton of variety, like realy, each album is a different kind of beast.
Anyway I am looking forward to more slipknot, static-x, korn, rammstein, dillinger escape plan or mudvayne :) or whatever other surprise you throw at us :D you have made my wednesdays a blast!

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  Рік тому +1

Nice, we must have a similar taste in music! I'll certainly have to check out Anaal Nathrakh, I'm not familiar with them. Chaotic music is absolutely right up my alley! Generally the noisier the better. Either that or the complete opposite, just really chill instrumental soundtrack-style music that really slowly builds. But thanks for watching the channel! (and it's funny, for me I always upload Tuesdays so you must be several hours ahead of me, haha!)

@@mollyesanborn I live in the czech republic, I would try to guess where you are from but I am bad at recognizing accents unless they are realy thick :D like typical british or veeeeery thick australian, but your english is crystal clear understandable without any accent that I can hear so I have no idea where you are from :D
And yeah I would say that our taste in music is quite similar, I am also lover of extremes, either chaotic and brutal as hell or very atmospheric with slow build up (that is why I have three bands to suit my needs :D one is grindcore and the other is inspired by deafheaven and deftones and such, the third is deathcore where I can go all crazy with my vocals)
As for Anaal Nathrakh, their debut album Codex Necro is probably the most extreme album I have ever heard, borderline unlistenable at first, a real musical challenge, but once you get used to the vocals it is a blast :) I dont want to spoil too much but their next two cds are not that interesting but oh boy, everything after them is amazing and all very different.

Love "Dead Memories" and "Psychosocial"! They are my two favorite songs on this album!! Fun fact: two songs ("Sulfer" and "Psychosocial") gained Slipknot into a more radio-friendly frenzy again, first time in awhile. Those both also were featured in some video game soundtracks, and record sales stacked up for Slipknot. In order of favored and most listened to, my top 3 albums of Slipknot's I like are:

Listened to this probably the 2nd least behind Grey Chapter, but this came at an awesome time. Saw Stone Sour live during the Come Whatever May Tour and the songwriting on Corey's behalf had really grown. Some of the best lyrics written were on this. Corey got back to a heavier vocal sound but not quite Iowa. I agree it was very clean. Joey absolutely crushed the drumming on this one. It's like they went a little too commercial on Vol. 3 and went woah okay, we need to at least bring back some more heaviness and they did. Love Sulfur! That song was so good live. They really found themselves on AHIG and a household name completely in metal at this point.

The 3 bonus tracks on here are pretty cool as well. Child of Burning Time is personally top 5 off this album, and Til We Die closes it really well. One of them is a remix of Vermilion Pt. 2, and it's easily my least favorite bonus track out of the 3, but it's still okay. I'd totally recommend Til We Die and COBT though!
Also another suggestion: I think you should do the bonus tracks along with the original album reactions instead of doing a separate video or even not hearing them at all. .5 has two bonus tracks, but I think they complement the album very well. However, I don't run your channel. You do what you want, but no matter what, I still enjoy these analyses

@@mollyesanborn so much love you chnl! Thank you very much for all your reactions and responses! Your work is great!
I have some recomendations for you - some of great speed and thrash metal bands that I really mean you enjoying:
If you want know how the thrash metal has evolved in 90’s in direction of inventing something like canons of heavy music I rec’ listen PANTERA - it’s really quintessence of metal
If want know how thrash evolving in 90’s in extreme direction getting close to some death metal but also some groove metal listen russian band MASTER
If love early thrash and want more stuff like that you need speed metal genre which more ardourful than aggressive thrash, and I rec’ listen firstly band RAGE
If interested how thrash evolving in some prog direction in 90’s listen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, funny ‘cos this band better known as band where was playing Metallica bassist )
If enjoy extreme type of 80’s thrash like Slayer I rec’ you KREATOR
If more enjoy fun type of 80’s thrash like Anthrax I rec’ you TANKARD
      PANTERA
Influential for 90’s metal and also very for contemp’ metal. Inventors of groove metal genre, throwing away all unnecessary from thrash, some ironically beating cliche of metal.
songs: Psycho Holiday '90; Walk '92; Slaughtered '94; The Great Southern Trendkill '96
      MASTER
Glum and shrill russian version of thrash. For me it’s really one of best representatives of thrash genre.
Pay attention on mood, and on sound, how it works to obtain such mood and I guarantee - other thrash after you listened this band will sounds like a toyish )
80’s songs: Мастер (Master) '87; Не Хотим (Don't Wanna), Боже, Храни Нашу Злость (God, Keep Safe Our Anger) '89
90’s songs: Talk of the Devil '92; Beastie Generation, Lock Them in the Graves '94
      RAGE
Speed-metal but some thrashy and progy and always with beautiful melodies. This was my favourite in speed metal genre. Feel free to use it to lighten the mood yourself )
Lider of this band Peter Wagner inspired by Metallica, Rush and Police. I don’t know who else listen together metal, prog and new wave, inspired and made music from it.
80’s songs: Down by Law ‘87; Don't Fear the Winter ‘88; Invisible Horizons ‘89
90’s songs: She Killed and Smiled '94; Sent by the Devil '95; Higher Than The Sky ‘96
00’s songs: Paint The Devil On The Wall ‘01; Great Old Ones ‘03; No Regrets ‘06
      FLOTSAM AND JETSAM
Started on classic thrash, since 90’s use grungy/funky/prog/groove-metal impurities and got a pretty unique style, using sharp thrash-riffs and prog exalted theatrical vocals.
80’s songs: Flotzilla (instr.) ‘86; Hard on You, I Live You Die '88
90’s songs: Natural Enemies ‘92; Empty Air '95; Dream Scape '99
      00’s & 10’s songs: Keep Breathing ‘01; Childhood Hero '06; Better off Dead ‘11
      KREATOR
Art expression of ‘bitterness’ emotionality and aesthetics by means of thrash.
songs: Pleasure to Kill '86; Some Pain Will Last '89; Coma of Souls '90
      TANKARD
Funny and intensive speedy thrash, art expression of drunken stupor condition.
songs: Zombie Attack '85; The Morning After '88; Beermuda '90
      Also I love Big Four.
Personally I recommend you pay attention on those albums by big-four bands as albums that are great and significant in they career and nice to listen videlicet as a whole piece:
      Metallica - Ride the Lightning - 1984
this is first their album with classic band’s style like next two but more freshy-juicy than following two
Megadeth - Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! - 1985
represented unique style of band better than lete works which is more conventional metal
      Anthrax - Among the Living - 1987
all the benefits of band in best condition
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss - 1990
all the benefits of band in best condition
      Metallica - Metallica - 1991
      sounds like Hummer looks
Anthrax - Sound of White Noise - 1993
nice example of such kind of grungie thrash
      Megadeth - Youthanasia - 1994
my favourite their album with Marty Friedman on guitar as whole album, gives me some kind of a trip; it full of catchy melodies and sound

@@mollyesanborn Also hope you make reactions on trip-hop !)
I really think that this kind of music sounds like music should sounds if art of music is translation of emotions and vibe in the first place.
They great in vibe creation - hypnotic like no one else, and perfectionists in every single detail.
If you know and love architectural pieces by Mies van der Rohe and Tadao Ando, or photography pieces by Helmut Newton and Peter Lindbergh -
trip-hop sounds like their pieces looks.
And this genre is really my type of music now more than any other, I love how that musicians work with rhythm and that vocal delivery is most soulful that I have ever heard.
My favourite trip-hop bands is MOLOKO and PORTISHEAD.

I never really came around to this album sadly, it's not even that I'm one of those folks who hate when Corey sings - I don't think he was just 'pumping out more stone sour', this album just really never stuck with me - to this day it's still probably my least revisited slipknot album. Vol3 being my favourite for reference.
You've probably already heard or will hear prior to filming, but the gray chapter is the album they put out after the death of their bassist Paul gray, as such it is a recurring theme and element and probably worth knowing. The death really shook the band, I remember seeing Corey the others barely making it through statements etc - might be worth looking up, if you're going for the full slipknot timeline & experience then it really is an instrumental moment in their journey.

From my experience talking with Slipknot fans this isn't their most popular album, on The Other hand I love it. This was exactly what I needed to hear back in 2008, the solos, the groove and the overall feel is more grown up than their previous joints. From what I remember this was a difficult album for the knot to make and most of the members don't share fond memories, most likely due to Paul Grays passing not long after.

All Hope Is Gone is a unique album for this band. It was their only album recorded in Iowa instead of LA. While it was convenient for them to record an album in their home state, to be able to go home daily was also a detriment. It wasn't their most cohesive album as a unit because it was very difficult to get everyone in a room together. A lot of the album was put together in pieces, through separate recording sessions. Some members recorded their takes and fucked off home while some barely showed up at all. With that said, this album fuckin kicks ass.
