Few nights later, I watched through the window, the possum walked up right between the two cats to eat. he didn't care, just strutted up like he owned the place :) One cat just looked at him like what the heck are you, and swatted at him. Possum ignored him and went to eating. Cat just figured whatever and started eating too. Cats are now inside cats, but still put food out for possum-not sure if same one, or how long they live, think it is same one though. So other night, noticed a raccoon eating out there. So put extra bowl out, and was thinking wonder what would happen if raccoon comes up when possums eating. Literally few mins later, it happened. Raccoon is rather skittish, he slowly sauntered up, looking around. Possum looked at him, shoved his bowl away from it, kept eating. Raccoon finally got the nerve and started in on his bowl. Funny too, they don't chow down every bit of food, it's like they leave a bit for the other one. And, they don't care for tomatoes or green peppers-those got tossed out of the bowl lol.

A fed animal is a dead animal. Doing that to any animal will cause them to lose fear of humans. As you can see in the comment sections here, people WILL kill them if they see them, because those people were never loved as kids and take it out on animals. Who knows what they do to kids or their spouses.
Yes. I've had numerous outdoor pet possums over the years who loved to sneak into the house. They loved to take over the cat tree and eat the cat food. I once left a box of cookies on my bed and later I returned to find a very happy possum covered in oreo crumbs.
To a little dog that possum is the size of the giant rat swaps in the Princess bride movie…that little dog is going to have nightmares. I would’ve picked my dog up and kicked a field goal with that possum coming at him like that
Wtf is wrong with you people? The dog is much faster than the possum, and it had the owner right there where it could go for cover if needed. The poor possum was just trying to make the dog stop approaching its ass.
Possums don't carry rabies or any other diseases. The dog and possum here were just curious of one another and only sniffed and ran after each other. If there was something really wrong with this possum, he may have acted differently. No one was bitten or hurt here. It was just a cute little banter of different species.
Why on earth would you think opossum cannot get rabies?!? Please use caution when making public claims, because when they are incorrect, as yours was....that spreads ignorance and might end up getting a child or novice to wild animals seriously hurt or killed if they believe what you post as fact. I love opossum and think they are marvelous animals that get a plagued reputation from most people just because they commonly don't know very much about them....like the fact their version of chocolate is slugs...so if we didn't have these lil nocturnal helpers....people would likely be complaining over the tons of slugs on their property, gardens, et al. Plus, if you've ever done a necropsy on them, then you'd see how very polluted they tend to be from an array of parasites...because of cleaning up carrion. The bacteria levels in the mouth alone are outstanding....so if you do get bitten, you have other worries added onto possible rabies. I don't mention these facts to make anyone fear them in the sense to eradicate them...i say it in the sense of caution...they are wild animals and have their place next to ours....just give them space. While this video may seem cute, what happens if that opossum takes this behavior into practice while some child or elderly person is walking their dog who may not be as fast or ready to deal with a chasing opossum?---not real considerate to others, opossum included.
+megan Mena ,my point wasn't how often it occurs, but the fact that it can and sometimes does....opossum are not immune to rabies...so somebody stating that they cannot get rabies is incorrect and since this is public and read by all age groups...didn't think it was right having incorrect information out there. So, the only misconception really was the fact the person i replied to said opossum cannot get rabies...which, is an absolutely false statement. They have an incredible immune system, also why they can withstand so much exposure (like parasites galore and various bacterial strains) which would otherwise very much shorten or kill most other mammals speedily....much like some of the bacteria found amongst the teeth/gum area of snakes and the komodo dragon...it is more dangerous than the physical bite....but, they get along fine with it...it aids them. I think you misunderstood me though....i'm not saying it is rampant....just stating that they can get rabies....i'd hate for a little kid to have read what that other person said and took it for truth, that they cannot get rabies...because we dont have radar for it in living animals besides some onset behaviors....so what if some kid got bit by one who was rabid and therefore did not get medical attention right away...thinking, cant get rabies...its a opossum!----then that's somebody's life is very tragically and painfully gone. People getting rabies and not being aware enough to get treatment is not unheard of these days and its an awful way to go..it is more controlled now, but still present. Same as bubonic plague....there are lots of people who think that's been gone AGES ago....it isn't...there are population outbreaks throughout the world....here in the U.S, it is prevalent in pockets of the south western part of the country....some parks having to shut down to control outbreaks. I just dislike incorrect information being advertised in sorts...it would be relatable to me stating here for all to read and maybe believe, that humans can live off ANY water source....then somebody would go chugging some good ole amoeba infested water, get some in their lungs and clickity clack they got some new neighbors renovating their brain....misinformation sucks. ;)
+Heather Lockard that was mostly un necisarry. anyone with a brain knows that nothing is impossible and the likley hood is SO SO low that they can contract and sustain rabies. it's just uneccissary to freak out so badley. please don't act like a social justice hero... " the children " ....
I was kind of shocked and annoyed by his letting his dog be endangered. It seemed kind of reckless, although we can all laugh now that we know all is well. whew
This is insteresting because it shows the possum has a variety of behaviors for dealing with perceived threats. Sometimes they play dead, sometimes they bear their teeth and hiss, but in this case, he charges the dog. Which does exactly what its supposed to do.
Why are you paranoid people in every single comment section of pet videos? You realize an unhealthy wild possum wouldn't be playing around like this right?
Way too cute, I was walking my little Chihuahua mix about 2:30 this morning he saw something and went after it. He ran under a car and I couldn't see what he was chasing. Very relieved to see a opossum come out the other side and this time not a skunk! The last critter he chased got him a bath at 1:00 in the morning. The opossum didn't seem to concerned and just waddled away. The dog didn't bark or try to attack he was just having some fun with the critter he found. I'd never allow my dog to harm any other animal. He has no interest in chasing cat's for some reason. He never chases them. So far 3 opossums two skunks! The skunks always win!
We had an opposum living under our deck, and our mean-spirited little chihuahua decided to try and sort it out. He ended getting chased away from the little hole under our deck, and bit right on the behind!!! He gives oppossums lots of room now! :D
i've seen one bolt for its life cuz i tripped sneaking on a opposum eating in the backyard it was on our table outside and i tripped...they can run reallllyyyy fast
I’ve never ever seen a possum behave like this! This is an incredible video! I think the possum was playing but I can’t believe it actually started chasing the dog. And you saw that the possum didn’t necessarily try to bite the dog towards the beginning of the video when the dog was within striking distance so I really think the possum may have been playing with this dog. Incredible. I have a possum and I love them. They are special, amazing little animals.
Opossums are not aggressive the just balk. Though they rarely carry rabies, any nocturnal animal around the daytime should be avoided. And this is not a recomended interaction
Saw one carrying its babies today while fishing, it’s on r/fishing, posted today if you want proof, but it wasn’t aggressive at all, and I don’t think it had rabies, just searching for food
It’s not impossible for them to have rabies. It its. Rey rare. They can carry rabies. Bieber I too have heard it’s unusual for them to be out during the day also and I have never seen one tbis aggressive Just shows you each one can be very different
whats odd is this possum didn't give the teeth warning, when they open their mouth and hiss showing their teeth...no playing dead... he looks super healthy and very clean it may be someones pet that got out...she seemed out of place too like when she sniffs the area where there was trees and twigs...bet u anything this is someones domesticated pet which explains why she was so brazen
Lol but the way the opossum be opening his mouth though like that was something like for real it felt like me getting bite like no I'm serious if you're in a scary move or Sean you feel like your in it and now my bran be messing me up like oh I'm the dog now like for real
I don’t think that’s playing. I get people are saying “Possums Don’t have rabbis” and all that but they are still wild animals.. I don’t think in the eyes of that opossum they where “playing”
Cancer Lost_Soul it was probably threatened since opossums are solitary animals. They probably aren’t very used to such close interactions, especially from another species of animal.
@@natalie9600 I have only just noticed this comment three years later but I cannot resist commenting that it is true that possums do not have rabbis. Possums aren't Jewish.
My yard used to be crawling with snails until a possum came around. It wiped out the snails within a week. Then it ate all the cockroaches and ate the excess fruit that fell from my trees. Very good critters to have around.
I think it's funny watching this opossum on the offensive, for once. Normally all the videos I've seen of opossums they're either incredibly docile or on the defensive. And this one's offensive doesn't make me dislike them, rather in this particular case, I wish I could pick this one up and pet him (or her).
@@shades_of_rad They don't bite? I'll have you ask my dog, oh wait she's still at the vets. Very serious and painful. Do some research on Possum bites.
Leave it alone they are the most friendliest backyard friend ever. You practically can tame these things wild and have them wander your yard and get close to them. They are actually very smart animals
tbh I think this is complete idiocy on the owners part. Does he have any idea if the opossum has any sort of bugs or diseases? Not to mention he kind instigated it. He should not have a dog if he is OK with putting it in possible if not deadly danger.
That is an oddly aggressive opossum, but not overtly so, so it's not like it has rabies, but I've never seen an opossum chase after another animal before, and don't usually see them during the day. Almost seems like it was a pet at some point.
+Tom Leeds It's not being aggressive at all, as it's not making any of the proper aggressive behaviors. Also pretty sure i've seen this opossum and neighborhood by a local breeder. Lastly, opossums cannot have rabies- their body temperature is too low and they have a specific antibody against it. There has not been a single verifiable case confirming rabies in an opossum in world history.
Sin Vraal Well, since you focused on it, I did not say it had rabies, in fact I was pretty clear that was unlikely. I have seen a lot of opossum and the only ones I have seen in daylight have been woken up or domesticated since they are pretty much strictly nocturnal. But even the domesticated ones were far more likely to run away rather than take chase. AND YES, taking chase is being aggressive, unless it is intended as play and that animal did not look like it was looking to play.
Chasing is not aggressive behavior for opossums because they do not do that when being aggressive. They sidle and sway their heads, open their mouths wide without closing, hiss and growl, and feign lunges. None of this was being done by the above pet opossum, so it is overwhelmingly clear that there was no danger here.
i use to feed them at my old house i was a really curious kid one night i over stepped by bounds and i slowly opened the back door, possum eating on our picnic table, and he didn't see me i was gonna stay there but i tripped and holy hell it was LOUD and the poor possum nearly had a heart attack it jumped off the table and ran across our massive backyard lawn in like 5 mili seconds...holy cow can they move! i felt bad i probably scared a year off its little life :(
@@kimmyfreak200 I don't think that's how it works they also have very poor eyesight they will literally just accidentally walk up on you and then freak out because they didn't see you
no, they were not playing with each other. That encounter transformed from curiosity for the dog to terror and from fear for the opossum to intimidating and establishing dominance.
What is wrong with you! That poor dog was scared out of its mind and you just stood there for minutes and watched your dog suffer with fear. You should not be allowed to own a dog. You despicable human being.
The way opossum ambles when he runs is very unique too! With both his left paws then both right paws (as opposed to dogs and cats and other animals who move both front then both back paws when they run)
The owner fucking baited a dangerous wild animal with a toy dog for a fucking UA-cam video..... this needs to be reported that dog was terrified and the owner didn't help him!!!!
After looking at 0:33 again, hard to say what the opposum intended. It still never moved fast as though aggressive. Ended well for both. I still believe it wanted to play. It could have latched on many times (and with THOSE claws it would have)
Oppossums are not normally aggressive. Nor do they chase after threats. It is more likely it got playful. If the oppossums feels threatened by something it will either play dead or run away.

I hand feed the ones that come to my back room window, they can be tamed in a couple days.
A fed animal is a dead animal. Doing that to any animal will cause them to lose fear of humans. As you can see in the comment sections here, people WILL kill them if they see them, because those people were never loved as kids and take it out on animals. Who knows what they do to kids or their spouses.

No, they are like gremlins, never feed them after dark. Trust me. They multiply instantly and release havoc unknown to most

Yes. I've had numerous outdoor pet possums over the years who loved to sneak into the house. They loved to take over the cat tree and eat the cat food. I once left a box of cookies on my bed and later I returned to find a very happy possum covered in oreo crumbs.
Them little legs stomping around,,so precious
she ( I think) had to go home and rest for sure.
People really don't deserve pets sometimes, most people don't deserve the internet.
That possum is like "I WILL bite your butt!" It's pretty cruel for them to not pick the dog up or get him away from the possum though!😨
Right
To a little dog that possum is the size of the giant rat swaps in the Princess bride movie…that little dog is going to have nightmares. I would’ve picked my dog up and kicked a field goal with that possum coming at him like that
Once the possum bite, they won't let go.
Wtf is wrong with you people? The dog is much faster than the possum, and it had the owner right there where it could go for cover if needed.
The poor possum was just trying to make the dog stop approaching its ass.
-possums are sweetheartssss
Dog deserves a better owner
You'd run funny too if you had hands for hind feet. :p
good point. hahaha

+Heather Lockard they very rarely get it it's a very large misconception
Most people aren't aware, but opossums CAN and DO know how to play. I've handled them for almost 34 years.

I was kind of shocked and annoyed by his letting his dog be endangered. It seemed kind of reckless, although we can all laugh now that we know all is well. whew
@@KindCountsDeb3773 I'm watching this thinking the same exact thing
The dog is under distress and they are laughing?
Should’ve just let the possum crack on with it’s day, rather than let the dog linger and mider it just for a laugh

Unusual for an opossum to show that level of aggression. It would've "played dead" had it felt threatened by the dog.
This is insteresting because it shows the possum has a variety of behaviors for dealing with perceived threats. Sometimes they play dead, sometimes they bear their teeth and hiss, but in this case, he charges the dog. Which does exactly what its supposed to do.
Opossum's are not terribly dignified creatures but the are kinda cute. They deserve higher regard than what they sometimes get.
Oppossums have to be one of the weirdest looking animals I've ever seen.

Leave possums alone. They don’t hurt anyone
We had an opposum living under our deck, and our mean-spirited little chihuahua decided to try and sort it out. He ended getting chased away from the little hole under our deck, and bit right on the behind!!! He gives oppossums lots of room now! :D
The dog be like: What da fuk are you
The possum be like: Bitch get outta the the way
That's the first time I see one run

Dog: thats a weird puppy.
Possum: thats a wierd possum
I like how the owner thought it was very funny to see his dog stuck on a leash and crying because it was scared and getting chased by a wild animal
Yeah the owner/leash holder is a cunt piece of shit.
The opossum sensed fear in the dog so decided to assert its dominance
Opossums are not aggressive the just balk. Though they rarely carry rabies, any nocturnal animal around the daytime should be avoided. And this is not a recomended interaction
d y that is an old wives tail....it is very common for a mother possum to come out during the day to find food for her babies

How are they playing with each other? At first the possum was scared of the dog and then the dog was scared of the possum.
This dog owner is a fool.
That possum like why you running lol
My yard used to be crawling with snails until a possum came around. It wiped out the snails within a week. Then it ate all the cockroaches and ate the excess fruit that fell from my trees. Very good critters to have around.
I think it's funny watching this opossum on the offensive, for once. Normally all the videos I've seen of opossums they're either incredibly docile or on the defensive. And this one's offensive doesn't make me dislike them, rather in this particular case, I wish I could pick this one up and pet him (or her).
He wants to play 😂😂😂

OMG SOOOOO CUTE BOTH OF THEM!!
Why on earth are you harassing that possum and putting the puppy in danger?
Awwww, he just wanted to play! 😻
Opossums are semi-arboreal, so they’re built for flexibility over speed. That’s why they run like that. I love hem
tbh I think this is complete idiocy on the owners part.
+Sin Vraal OK, you clearly consider yourself an opossums expert & I am not hear to argue about it.
The Opossum just wanted to be left alone. If it had gotten ahold of the dog, it probably wouldn't have known what to do next. LOL
Possum's move incredibly fast when they're chasing bugs I saw one eating Roaches on my front porch at night

After looking at 0:33 again, hard to say what the opposum intended. It still never moved fast as though aggressive. Ended well for both. I still believe it wanted to play. It could have latched on many times (and with THOSE claws it would have)
"I WAS JUST PLAYIN MAN I DODNT MEAN IT--"
That Possum is so funny.
Oppossums are not normally aggressive. Nor do they chase after threats. It is more likely it got playful. If the oppossums feels threatened by something it will either play dead or run away.
The opossum sin't playing.
