I know you'll be really tempted to take those big 20-man crusader blobs, but if he's playing indirect guard don't do it. You're just giving him free shots with his blast weapons. Split them up into 10-man groups. Forces him to split his fire and gives you a better chance of actually getting your boys up into the thick of it. If a unit can take a lascannon, do it. They're free, and we're in a vehicle meta so those high-powered shots won't be wasted. And once you're up close, don't forget about the grenades stratagem. 6 dice and every 4+ is a mortal wound. Should help deal with those vehicles.
Having been a player for 30 years the number one reason people get stomped is they forget the mission and concentrate on killing the enemy. Killing the enemy is a byproduct of achieving your goal not the other way around. I recently played a game with my Tyranids I killed 3 sentinels(in two different squads), the same fiend gun twice and less than a squad of guardsmen. He killed hundreds of termagaunts and most of a squad of zoenthropes but I won 90 points to 35 I played the mission he wanted to clear the table.
I think you are right. I lost nearly every game of 9th edition last year, but my win rate has improved since 10th. I think this is sometimes because my opponents have been eager to try out powerful units (Abaddon in a 1000 pt game?!) and haven't had enough boots on the ground to cover the objectives, while I've been getting cheap light infantry onto those objectives.
@@marasmusine we all do it. its human nature to go "look at the neat stuff i can do!" but watch the best players in your area they will invariably play the mission. honestly i think one of the best things GW did this edition is the mission cards rewarding drawing missions. i think it will lead to more balance lists doing better in turn the meta will skew to all comers lists rather than deathstar or one trick pony lists

I fell in luv with necromunda in 2017 and it all started with underhive genestealer cultists. Now all my necromunda models do time in my genestealer cultists army, so go nuts mixing and matching both systems as I think it looks great!
damn thats a lot of Templars! #LEGEND ! My Dark Angels are just ovr 6000 pts. it consists of all firstborn, and is the full 3rd battle company. Four Predators and two Whirlwinds. Along with full squads of Deathwing Terminators and Ravenwing Bike squads and Landspeeders and Landspeeder Tornadoes for supporting. It looks awesome when all on the table. But 10 000 pts, DAMN!
Heheheh, yup already made my document for model substitutions for GsC, not gotten round to it yet... but it's there for the future. On the subject of Atalan Jackals: Dustback Helamites
I played a 1000pt Black Templar vs Tyranids game recently (I was BT) and the Land Raider Crusader was the MVP. Now that it can carry primaris units, specifically P. Crusader Squads, it is a beast in 10th. Throwing in a Predator tank also helps to balance out the shortcomings of BT melee.
I'm glad ypur playing 10e. My group have been enjoying it a lot, and our armies are becoming more and more thematic. Hope to see a battle report one day.
I've found the trygon works well with the rapid ingress stratagem. Since its after your opponent moves, pop up somewhere they can't shoot you profitably. You'll then be plenty close enough to charge on your turn.
I played a game against guard a few weeks back. I found the best way was to use lots of deep strike and fast movement to play aggressively and force them to adapt to you. If you try and skirt the edges and play defensively they just blast you, aggression is key. Obliterators, possessed and terminators were my best answers for them.
As a guard player I can confirm this! I got some bullgryns just to deal with terminators (hopefully). I should also add that I have gotten really lucky on some vehicle explosions too.
I know what you mean with the GSC. I wanted to build a normal human militia of civilians and scavengers, fighting back against xenos as a last line of defense type theme. GSC with the mining weapons and brood brothers make a great basis for a proxy army. I have bought way too much Necromunda models to use as kitbash/proxys. some fun ideas i'm planning are an Ambot cyborg conversion = Patriarch, Goliath Gangers = Aberrants, Ogryn Servitors = Abominants, and for some extras to use as a tyranid proxy detachment Orlock Wreckers = Gargoyles, Orlock Gangers = T/H Gaunts, Cyber Mastiffs = Ripper Swarms, Scavenged Guard Valkyrie = Harpy/Hive Crone, and some Guard tanks converted into JCB styled construction vehicles as larger tyranids. Gonna take a while, but conversions and kitbashes is what got me into 40k.
I'm convinced adding helmets would do wonders to make them look less silly, yellow/purple/teal with a dragon transfer and mining lights, some hoods too. Necrmd models would work well too, but I'd wonder if it'll look all that different from the basic infantry if they're all the same colour, though the different weapons would look cool.
Best tip i saw against guard was asymmetric warfare. Focus on one part of the army and force them to adjust to you. Deep strike and vehicles are also your friend.
I played with guard against space marines yesterday and tabled my opponent no problem even without any artillery. My death korps with characters outkilled the marines in melee and even took down the Ballistus dread. The terminators were shot to pieces with Dam3 shooting from the Rogal Dorn. The sentinels were too much for my friend's limited anti-tank. It was still a fun game for both because every unit got to shine and kill or badly maul something. That's perhaps a redeeming quality of guard: even you lose against them, you can kill a lot of them.
I kit bashed the Atalan Jackals and the Goliath truck from the Genestealer cults with some of the Escher Ash wastes upgrades to form the basis of a Harley Quinn themed Escher Ash Wastes gang and can confirm that Genestealer Cults and Necromunda kits do work well together.
I would love to see a video about kit bashing necromunda models, turning them into gene stealers… I’ve had a similar idea in mind for a while and would love to see your take on it if you should choose to go down that route :)
I like that this is a 40k and miniature games channel and not mini painting channel, but your black templars are so exceptionally well painted. I know you paint a lot, but not that much in most of your videos, so each mini you show off is like this very humble flex. I know you stream painting but due to time zones thats not really viable, and watching live streams as vod always feel a little meh compared to produced videos like the ones you have on youtube. Anyways, just wanted to say that your minis look great, as i am sure you already know, and that the videos you guys make are really great, please keep up the great work!
A rising rebellion army would be cool. Basically Genestealer cult but without the tyranid link. Just citizens rising up, grabbing weapons from anywhere and everywhere. Using construction equipment, cobbled together mechs, aerial work vehicles like the mining pods from Guardian of the galaxy etc. So fun.
For your custom Genestealers: Remember that there are canon genestolen Orks AND some Orks on Armageddon (?) habe adapted to use Tyranid bioweapons. So easy reasoning for using Orks as aberants and such.
Hey I also play Guard and I am wondering if Shan has any 20 man Death korps squads supported by a Death Korps Marshal because he can give them a 5+ invulnerable save and can give them the take cover order so plus the medic who can regen D3 models a turn you can just drop them on a objective and not have to worry as much about them just being blasted off the objective.
Against indirect fire guard, I've had my best results by maxing out on deep strikes & reserves. I usually play a drop pod in my Space Marines to guarantee that a shooting unit can get a good angle turn 1. I'm a Blood Angels player, and I keep finding over & over that unless you're going into your Oaths target and pumping your unit with strategems, you're going to really struggle with killing vehicles in melee. You need a core of shooting in order to make that happen. I've been using a mix of lascannon Devastators & Eradicators. Unless you're really sure you'll live to the next battleround with a unit, or they have a melee cleanup unit babysitting the tanks, don't be afraid to charge your anti-tank shooting into combat with a tank. It makes it so your opponent has to commit more to killing it, which either means they'll undercommit and some will live, or they'll have less shooting to go into the rest of your army.
So, against the Guard you really need MSU over massive hordes. Especially with the blast weapons in play. There are rules to help buff Templar melee with lethal hits, and ways to stack that so melee lethal hits is 5+ not just 6. Might want to look into it. Also, nothing wrong with bringing a vehicle or two of your own to try and shoot back. A repulsor can transport 10 crusaders and a character now. I’m just saying….
The space marine and necron codex will show us what the future of the game play will be for 10th. Being a chaos player I'm content waiting for my book until spring
Tyranids vs IG it's a easy win for tyranids, even with two leviathans boxes you have several models to win playing the mission (control objectives), earthshaker cannon it's not a big deal because if you play units of 10 models it's just D6+5 shoots (8 shots average) and for 1 CP you regain D3+3 models on two units, also indirect fire gives you +1 to save and if you use psychophage you have FNP 6+, scout sentinel are easy to kill so without the bonus, they shoot at 4+ , so 3 basilisk + leontus + 2 sentinels are 630 points, for kill at best 18 gaunts per turn, in 3 turns you can make 30 points with primaries and around other 10-15 with secondaries (cleanse + engage all fronts).
Current Necromunda is fantastic, and the new Core Rules make it even more so! I've been playing it for over a year now constantly and it's just so much fun!
I've found a 5 man first born crusader squad in a razorback is cheap and super effective for lots of different tasks. Even at 5 models that squad has 10 wounds so it has enough staying power to grab an objective, and if you put a twin linked lascannon on the razorback it's a super cheap but pretty effective tank.
Genestealer cults should be all painted differently to a point but have something simple that ties them together. I like the idea of using some of them for a imperial ship crew who are thrown together by the navy breachers to fend off a hostile boarding attack
I had some success with a 1000 pts list. It depends on how shooty your opponent is. Righteous Crusaders Detachment (Accept Any Challenge, No Matter the Odds) - High Marshal Helbrecht (105 pts, Perdition's Edge 15 pts), Castellan (70 pts), Primaris Crusader Squad 10 (160 pts), Rhino (85 pts) - Chaplain Grimaldus (120 pts, Sigismund's Seal 20 pts), Primaris Sword Brethren 5 (165 pts), Rhino (85 pts) - Ballistus Dreadnought (170 pts) or Black Templars Gladiator Lancer (160 pts) Both melee squads have 5+ crit and abilities to benefit from those crits. Also both squads can fall back and charge, which is very important for melee packs with shooting support.
Attack Bike Squad x2 (110 pts) + Primaris Invader ATV (80 pts) instead of Ballistus/Lance + Perdition were great, but Attack Bike Squad is in Legends now, so no luck for now.
i would love to see you to pick up the starter box for battletech at target, I love the way you paint, and would love to see you tackle the mechs in BT.
Gene stealer cult is so good in 10th edition! You should be killing it, literally! My advice, avoid melee units unless you are loading the Black Templars up in a big ole Land Raider and getting them up in his face real fast.
I'm just now getting into 40K and I'm having no problem making a 1000 point Space Marine army. The mainstay of my army is a Repulsor Executioner, Relic Terminators, Liberian in Term and Heavy Intersessors. Yeah I won't have many bodies but they will hit hard and not die quick.
Black templars are amazing right now...great melee and tanky ability other great marine faction...deathwatch who have insane shooting and deepstrike/redeploy tricks
I agree the Necromunda Squats are more appealing than Leagues of Votaan. Tech-mite looks a lot like the drones from the classic SF movie Silent Running.
Highly recommend slingshotting your genestealers with a swarmlord to tie up shooting armies. Not crazy expensive and they can hold their own usually. Pair with a Broodlord if you have the points for bonus ouchies.
For Shawn’s imperial guard delete button tank bring indirect fire hive guard! That or bait him out with a strong unit and use a tyrannofex or 2 with rupture cannon to get rid of it
Jay I'd love to see how you get on with the necromunda genestealer cults army. I've been thinking of something similar but isn't there a scale issue between necromunda and 40k? How will the parts work together?
Chances are that new Primaris units that replaces old ones will just use the same rules, just like Sternguard Veterans. They make no difference between Primaris Sternguard Veterans or Firstborn Sternguard Veterans.
Honestly, if you're playing Indirect Guard, you need to do the same. Take a Desolator Squad in a transport, and a couple of Whirlwinds. Grab 2 scout sniper squads and then fill out the rest with whatever you want.
You need some zoenthropes and venomthropes and a tervagon that’s pretty close to my list. 3d3 +12 termagaunts added back to your gaunts will make your opponent twitch.
Honestly my dude, you should try and put those Necrons back on the table. They are really good right now, and even if he kills half a squad they all get back up in your command phase.
Those black templars you've painted look incredible. I'm going to have to check out the stream, I also love arguing about Star Wars lol but what's the argument?
I hear you with the Necrons. I love them but they are kind hard to play right. Though, I do want to try the Royal warden/Chronomancer combo out. Maybe have immortals.
As noted, bugs are about multiple small units now, not one or two big units ... Blast is properly good, and Oath of Moment lets marine players just *erase* one target a round ... so instead of two or three targets, you give 'em eight. As for the parking lot? The big things here are in two flavors. First and foremost, getting a unit into melee turns off blast guns (a vehicle in engagement range can shoot the attackers at a penalty, but blast weapons in particular can NOT be used that way), which will turn off the boom. Secondly, learn to love reserves and Rapid Ingress. The ability to stick a unit down after the opponent's moves end, where it can move on your turn to get close enough for a charge, rather than having the 9" longcharge from Deep Strike, is one heck of a force multiplier. Lictors do it for free, Raveners can come down nearly anywhere, and a Carnifex doing it is just *hilarious* as suddenly this massive monster just trots in from the flanks, looks around, and is, like, "Oh, hey Carl, let me call you back." *boop* "RAWR!" and gets on with his day of smashin'.
I think we are similar players in that we are painters that get really excited to paint cool guys and start more armies. I actually haven’t played a game since 2nd edition and I won ONE game ever but my army always looked better.
Im a Guard player and dont play artillery (mainly because i cant get ahold of any) i absolutely love mech guard and sending my boys, tanks and sentinels up the board but i went up against a parking lot guard player at my local GW Store and got wiped off the board very quick, even my tanks could only hold out so long 😅
Played 3 games so far, my deathguard have got slaughtered each time. Eldar for 2 and Tyranid for the last. First Eldar list was fluffy not particularly tailored, for the second the opponent tailored his army down and I still had no chance getting wiped both times. Tyranid I just wasn't mobile enough and couldn't do enough damage.

I'm super new but could you try deep striking terminators into the backing to tar pit the indirect fire weapons?
I don't know who this Sean guy is but I'm pulling for you to kick his ass. Go bugs
Jay you best make that gene stealer kit bash video !! Hope you do it soon don't keep us waiting !!
Black templars are amazing right now...great melee and tanky ability other great marine faction...deathwatch who have insane shooting and deepstrike/redeploy tricks
Little robo looks like robots from movie Silent Running.
I agree the Necromunda Squats are more appealing than Leagues of Votaan. Tech-mite looks a lot like the drones from the classic SF movie Silent Running.
You know what you need Jay? SOME LAND RAIDERS! Roll them bad boys right up to his line and mess them up.
The term you were looking for to describe those squats is "retro sci-fi", I think.
That or bait him out with a strong unit and use a tyrannofex or 2 with rupture cannon to get rid of it
At least your army is fully painted!
Its okay jay we all struggle from time to time
Because of our old codex, and me liking tradition, the Emperors Champion is an auto include in every list I make..
Jay I'd love to see how you get on with the necromunda genestealer cults army. I've been thinking of something similar but isn't there a scale issue between necromunda and 40k? How will the parts work together?
Hallo!! love your vids!!
Very nice Grimmy. Now show us the Servitors!!
I'd totally come play with you, with no indirect fire, I got a steel rain list/ Uriel Ventris/ sternguard list I want to try haha.
Those black templars you've painted look incredible. I'm going to have to check out the stream, I also love arguing about Star Wars lol but what's the argument?
Which Necromunda gangs do you think make for the best Genestealer Cult kitbash units?
Mine is Delaque, Cawdor, and Escher.
123 baby!!! as a bug person I find that you should swarm, overwhelm your opponent and objectives.
3:01 gotta add that to my dreadnought collection as a leviathan and give it that Big Daddy face. Maybe some cherubs as Little Sisters
I had an idea to use Necromunda models for an IG army who’s theme is they were recruited from a penal colony.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
123 episodes?! It seems like episode 69 was just yesterday.
Good luck with your games. I've never been a player of 40k, just a builder and painter, but maybe I'll give 10th edition a shot
It's definitely an edition that is centered on vehicles now.
I'm just saying. The Little squat bot has like hat above his eye, and I love it. Big Wallie vibes.
Make 6 termagant units, 6 hormagant units, and 6 units of gargoyles and watch your opponent run out of activations as you run out of units!
I think we are similar players in that we are painters that get really excited to paint cool guys and start more armies. I actually haven’t played a game since 2nd edition and I won ONE game ever but my army always looked better.
Necrons are amazing now! Please read the rules!
2:22 industrial era called and they want their idea back
i love the bases you use but i struggle to make them any tips?
I think the super high tech look of the Votann is waaay cooler.
Im a Guard player and dont play artillery (mainly because i cant get ahold of any) i absolutely love mech guard and sending my boys, tanks and sentinels up the board but i went up against a parking lot guard player at my local GW Store and got wiped off the board very quick, even my tanks could only hold out so long 😅
I used the necromunda scum for loads of my GSC
HEY!! Auspex Tactics uploads every ten minutes!! get it right!! lol
