Well, the bear is obviously hunting the elk fawn, which means it's really hungry. You'd think getting back in the car would be a really, really good idea. Apparently not. Darwin is out there somewhere chuckling.
if that bear was really hungry, he would have gone after the larger elk. the bear was probably just looking for an easy meal after coming crossed this little elk herd with a juvenile.
All these criticisms of the filmers, but they did it right. Stand in a group and don't run. A smallish black bear like that isn't going to attack a large group of humans. That bear looked hyper focused on the elk cries anyway.
@mike t Look at it's shoulders and snout at 39 seconds in, definitely not a grizzly, that's a black bear dude. And that's pretty average to small for a black bear.
@mike t Not going of color dude, that's a bad way to identify bears. It doesn't have the humped shoulders of a grizzly. It's snout looks pretty straight too, also indicative of a black bear.
Yeah, they were very smart. They made the best choice in their given circumstance, stand still, behind a fence. They def could have made it worse by running out from behind the only fenced part of that walkway and right past the bear that is already worked up chasing prey while you hope it doesn't catch you in the 1/4 mile+ that it would take before you get back to your car, if the bear didn't decide you were a much easier catch than the elk, cause you aren't out running a bear.
My wife and I were at Yellowstone National park back a good few years ago. We were hiking a trail and suddenly we were between a few buffalo and a half dozen coyotes. We just froze and kept quiet, they moved on. You’ve got to respect Nature!
So people bashing the poster/tourist for not taking the "proper action". While I wasn't there I know where this took place. It took place in Yellowstone National Park on the West Thumb Great Basin Trail - Specifically close to the Painted Pool. 1. They are a good 2 or 3 hundred yards from the parking lot. 2. The section they are in is one of the few locations that HAS a fence. 3. Returning to their car would mean walking towards where the elk climbed the embankment where there is NO fence. 4. Walking in the opposite direction would take them towards where the elk calf went...where there is NO fence. So now that you have that information do you still think staying where they are at is the WRONG decision? Are you suggesting that calmly walking TOWARDS the prey that has NO fence is a good idea?
@@jeffreyhurst7231 You are correct. That's why that puny fence that is there 24/7 is so broken in the video. Cause bears just demolish it all the time. Also moving forward or back on that trail would lead to where either the Elk or Calf went...I'd stay where the prey did NOT go but hey. You do you.

This geyser viewing area has them trapped in a closed end of the area; leaving for the parking lot forces them to move towards the oncoming bear. But it does reinforce that people are quick to judge things based on zero knowledge.
I don't think it's the situation they are talking about ,I think it's more so the weird ass people telling the elk "don't run this way" and being that close to a hungry bear and still standing there with just a few slates of wood to keep them safe when none of them could one out run a elk and two out run a bear so yea they are not the brightest bunch rather the parking lot is in the middle of the geyser or on top of it .
The bear AND the elk had been there for dozens of minutes, they don't just teleport, they shouldn't have been standing that close to elk in the first place, let alone elk WITH CALVES. Moreover, they had a path that would have led them AWAY from the bear-they were NOT "closed in".
