I think one of the absolute best things about your lessons is the fact that you basically ALWAYS begin your videos by playing what you are about to teach! That allows the more advanced players to go ahead and start learning visually and auditorily without having to hear somebody blabber on for 5 or so minutes only to realize that the lesson is crap!! Other teachers should take note of this and start out the same way!! Best guitar instructor on the net BY FAR!!
@@markjasper1127 yeah but at least if you hear what they're playing first you can compare their version to the original, meaning you don't have to sit through the entire lesson to realise it's a cover or not as good as the original that you wanted to learnm
Marty you are the f**king man. The quality of these lessons is off the charts and the fact that they are free blows my mind. Thanks you so much for the effort you put into this. I've improved so much because of you and I'm truly grateful.
Same here, just picked up the guitar at 50 yrs old, and Marty you are by far the best teacher! I too am loving your you tube lessons, thank you so very much, its much appreciated.
I watched this video a year or so ago and had no idea what I was beginning to learn. Now a year later I can play the pentatonic shapes 1 through 5 all up and down the neck in any key i want. Thanks Marty for being a great teacher, also I love your connected blues pentatonic pattern and love to throw it into my soloing.
"Now a year later I can play the pentatonic shapes 1 through 5 all up and down the neck in any key i want" Thats a cool skill but can you actually solo?
I guess 60 yrs. isnt to late to learn how to play the guitar . Self-taught, and I am getting better because of sites like this one . Fun stuff!! , and thanks Marty for breaking down the Blues so guys like me, can follow along with out getting lost in the shuffle. ( pun intended )
I'm with you. I'm 52 and I've been playing about 6 months. I've been a drummer for 35 years and I finally decided to learn to be a REAL musician. LoL. J/k. :)
John, I also thought at 65 if this was doable, the passion I have in my heart to say words to a love drives me. Marty has open all of us up to what we have in-side of us. 6 good months in to playing and watching Marty's videos I own 2 acoustics and 1 electric guitar and a nice amp. To your replies, my brother was a mad man on the drums, I never thought I has any music in me. A combination of love, passion, Marty and practice, what a cocktail. My special thanks to Geoffery Mays here in Eugene OR for being my personal Marty
Hi Marty, You're such a great teacher and despite nearing 70 I'm up early every day (just like going back to school) to practice and learn from your videos. So a big thanks Marty for making my life more enjoyable through these difficult times.
This video was a huge eye opener for me. The E minor pentatonic reminds me of a good $75 bottle of single malt scotch. It’s accessible, affordable, and why choose a $200 bottle when the right $75 bottle is already a work of art. Thank you, Marty. Can’t wait to go practice this scale with a jam track.
I love how he absolutely kills it for the first 2 minutes and then looks at the camera and is like ''heeeey whatsupp you guys'', like he just sees the camera is rolling hahaha
Hey Marty, I’m 67 years old, played 35 years ago a fair amount not much since. Always loved the blues, not I can learn, you rock. Love your teaching style! A big thanks!!
I´m 66 and just got an electric guitar together. So now i´m starting out with your blues serie, its awesome how much you have tought me in a short time. Keep up the good work.
I love how you just break into the song or jam during lesson. I had to leave my guitar behind when I was moving out from England and I've got myself a new one after almost two years of break. I learned from you back then and now I'm revisiting to get back into it. The moment you just burst into playing Moby Dick I was like "I WANT TO LEARN THIS RIFF". And by looking at your fingers I kinda did. Need to solve the awesome bridge in this song yet but I love how everything is coming back to me and that along the way I learned new lick thanks to you. I owe you rebirth of my passion man :)
I watched several of your videos without having a guitar. I simply paid attention to your excellent explanations and I went out and bought a Martin DSS-15M and started playing E minor pentatonic scales right away. Within two days, I had several songs down and am really enjoying my new guitar. In all fairness, I play classical piano, but have never attempted playing anything other than 250 year old music. Thanks for producing these great videos.
Great, it is a must to learn and easy to practice a lot. ----E-E3----A-A2----D-D2----G-G2----B-B3----e-e3---- So, (because of) E and B have no half notes, they go on the 3th (not the 2nd). Thanks for making these lessons.
I just wanna thank you for doing what you're doing Marty. I've been playing for years and never liked lessons and always played by ear. You make lessons fun again..
apart from being a class teacher he is the one i would recommend to someone who is a beginner in english, his voice is so clear to my ears compared to others on the youtube
I've been taking acoustic guitar lessons, advanced beginner. But Marty's lessons are so beginner friendly but I've learned complicated songs from his lessons. Thanks Marty. You're the best.
Blues lead guitar taught by Marty is right on! He's the only guy I have found on youtube worth recomending. The Blues guitar starts in the key of 'E' & Marty is the only guy teaching it right. It Starts in 'E' then you drift into other keys as get on but I have never heard a blues song in the key of 'A'. These guys teaching to play blues lead in the key of 'A' are steering kids in the wrong direction. Forget about 'A' it's for Rock. Park yourself in 'E' for a while then follow Marty's steering, he will head you in the right direction.
Marty... you are my favorite teacher ever! Ive learned more from you in a few months than I have in all the other lessons I've taken in my entire life! You're just so awesome. Im pretty sure that I can FINALLY become half the guitarist I've always aspired to be if I stick with you.
So, I played bass in blues bands back in the day, I stopped playing 30 years ago. I bought my grandson a guitar a couple of years ago and tried to teach him blues progressions. Needless to say it didn't end well.. he never got it right. He got mad and didn't talk to me for about a year. Well, he shows up for my birthday and hands me a SRV Fender Stratocaster and says "let's see what you got, old man" lol. Here I am 72 years old and learning how to play the guitar. I'll out chop the little punk in no time thanks to you Marty!!
Just turned 65 introduced to osteoarthritis can't afford a les Paul or even a Gibson. However very much pleased with this utube person Marty Swartz es blues guitar A min pentatonic.
Hey Marty! You're the guitar-Guru! Thanks so much for all your FREE!! lessons. I am 59 years and I've been playing the House of the f***ing rising sun since I was 16 and never learned much more. And than Marty came and said: "Let there be light" and it became light. Greetings from Germany. I hope you're fine and please please please keep going. Oli
Thank you so much Marty. I've been learning to play the blues with you since the beginning of the pandemic so I can jam with my buddy when we'll meet again. Life changing tutorials!
I'm 65 and never played. A friend gave me a Telecaster he wasn't using. I found you on line and have not looked back. You and that damn guitar changed my life. I can't thank you enough.
Oh Marty, from 13:10 onward you were just showing off. In a good way though. This way we all get it ... the importance and relevance of the scale. Thank you for caring that we learn.
I love the way you break things down into easy digestible pieces. I am learning a lot. Your a great music teacher and play so fricken great! Thank you for sharing your musical knowledge.
Hey Marty, thanks for the free videos. I bought father a guitar on my 2nd Iraq tour and he loved it. Played it all the time. He passed away last year and I have to guitar that I once purchased for my father. Now, it's my turn. I really enjoy the video and I will keep on watching. Thanks
Marty at about 10:30 you start to branch off the main scale and go to 5th and 7th fret of B, but it works. Is that because you're hitting the same notes you would on the high E?
I recently sent a friend these three beginner blues lessons. I completely forgot how awesome and easy they are to follow along with. Sometimes it's good to refresh on basics especially when trying to get into more SRV
I purchased his blues bundle lessons and I didn’t only learned about the mechanics of playing.. I learned how to play guitar, plain and simple. Marty is the fkn man!
Dude congratulations on your UA-cam channel, I picked up guitar about 2 years ago and watched you for the first time but I got outa the grove, just now coming back and see you’ve really gone far since then. Thanks and congratulations
I was looking for the style of teaching that doesn't scare me off, and here I am I found it. I want to learn NOW. I've been "playing" all night till all my finger tips are hurting / swollen / blistered / cut. even though my guitar is supposedly "soft" = Ibanez RG370DXZ, which I dug out og my closet after 10 years.
Marty, I've been playing guitar on and off for years. After only a few days of watching your videos I have improved more than I ever have and I'm actually making my own blues licks! Wish I'd discovered your videos sooner! Take it easy, peace and love from the UK.
Very nice .I'm learning myself .I have 2 one to one lessons a week and after each lesson, I watch videos like this to solidify what I've been taught and would highly recommend this way for anyone who can afford it .Even if I couldn't afford personal tuition I'm sure Matry's videos would do a great job .
wow, your sound 7 years ago was great. the boogie sounds way better than the katana you are using now... thanks for all the years and the content you give away for free Marty.
Marty, I've been watching in the wings for quite some time now and just subscribed. This is a great intro to the basic E Pentatonic and how to liberate your fingers in solos around the fretboard. Thanks. My daughter comes home from college in May and I'm going to use her electric and practice this so she can drop her jaw and see her "almost 50" father learn this awesome riff! BTW - what looper were you using to lay the background?
looping is built into the Fender Mustang GT series amps, included withe the 200 watt 2x12, but an extra $79 when getting the 40 or 100. The Mustang GT 40 will be following me home soon, and will be snagging the pedal, too. With kids in college, like me, I bet you are not looking to spend the same kind of $$$ Marty can on pedals, amps, and speakers.
People flexing by just showcasing how fucking brilliant they are at the beginning of videos really grinds my gears. Unless it’s Marty. Then it’s just fucking cool.
Holy crap! The E minor scale is the only one I know with confidence and you just showed me several tunes that I grew up with, all played within the scale. The loose ends are starting to come together, and may I call you the seamstress (seamster?) that’s bringing them together? Another older beginner here but guitar is fun! So much I want to be able to do, but not there yet. Thanks Marty!
I'm sick of this ad saying you can learn of you tube and use yousician and guitar trick and that UA-cam does not work because there bad lessons that's baloney there only bad if you don't listen to the song your learning aswell
Wow, besides making the guitar look easy to play, your tutorials really have made it easy to learn the basics and this 69 year old guy thanks you for your time and effort. After 3 weeks of hard work I can finally play "Johnny be good", albeit at a medium tempo. Thank you, thank you soooo much, you are the best!
I took me a sailing accident and broken left hand (2 years ago) to dig deeper in into the guitar-scale-univers. Finally I found this video lesson telling me that this is what I'm looking for years and didn't know how close I allways whas. Thanks budy.
At what point do you suggest adding the blue notes to the pentatonic scale? Or practicing soloing with blues notes? My scale work is very rudimentary and mechanical sounding, can't seem to turn notes into licks. Please help.
Thank You Marty, I’m learning guitar after 30+ years of bad guitar habits. This was an excellent explanation with precise camera angles for the E Scales! I’m looking forward to more videos and practice.
Thank you so much for doing this lesson. Someone finally clearly and simply explained what a scale is and how the notes are part of a family which all go together. Basic understanding which everyone else presumes we all know. Many surely do. I didn’t but needed to. Now I do. Thank you and for the great lesson in total!
Covid Sucks so I bought a guitar and thank you so much because I have watched all the accoustic beginners and am practicing daily and trying to get my tiny hands used to stretching across the neck of a guitar. Can no longer scratch an itch cos I don't have nails anymore
Alright, honestly Marty , my pinky is thrashed from all the fighting I've done over the years so I can't use it, My ring finger has to work twice as hard. So it would be a pleasure to learn all that I can using only my 3 fingers. And thank you for your videos, highly informative.
Dear Mr. Marty, I have learned to play songs on the guitar from your videos, and I still check in here at your channel from time to time. I just wanted to comment that many years ago I learned to play the guitar by ear from my older brother several decades ago way back in the 1960s. Then, when I taught myself to read music, especially TABs on the guitar, I watched UA-cam videos where there is an encouragement to learn pentatonic scales. I have done this since more than five years ago. I did master reading guitar TABs, but I was never fast in playing these pentatonic scales. However, I think that focusing on those pentatonic scales did not help me to master guitar playing especially the new music of blues that currently interest me. I think that these pentatonic scales have slowed my progress in learning how to play blues. I have noticed that I make much progress if I focus less on music theory. I think feel that I make noticeable progress if I focus on videos where the players show how to play any music be it pop or blues and then go back to the pentatonic scales to find out where the notes come from that I play in my blues arpeggios. That is my experience with the pentatonic scales. I am still having problems finding UA-cam videos where it is clearly demonstrated how the pentatonic scales can be used to play the blues music that makes sense.
Here I am, back in MartyLand, learning the proper way to do something. I have played by ear and by mimicking for so long that I finally ran into a whole bunch of brick walls. Thanks for helping me to break through those.
Dear marty, im currently 23 years old, im really good at guitar i guess you can say im a little bit more than intermediate, but ill never forget that i learned pretty much all the riffs that i know from you, 10 years ago lil me, just thank you
I’ve been watching Marty since I was 16 I’m currently 25 just getting back into playing I’ve always loved his lessons I feel like I can grasp it very well
I absolutely love your channel Marty! Literally been watching your videos since I was 12-13… I’m 27 now, and still learning 😅 Thank you so much for all that you do!
Hey! It's Rumble. I learned to play that before I knew what a scale was. And if you're still confused about what a scale is you won't be if you learn Rumble (the first distorted guitar song) first. It's the Pulp Fiction Jackrabbit Slims song. Not the dance but when Vincent is checking out the restaurant.
just wanted to say, I've been playing for about two months and this video gave me the direction and confidence to start messing around with soloing. thank you :)
Thank you Marty... I'm just a guitar hack. Do some things really well. And other things I am still working on nailing. I never think I'm good enough at playing guitar. The math allows for so much more.
just turned 62 beat cancer so i bought a gibson and i'm learning how to play thanks
I'm happy for you, good luck! 👏
Good luck!
hell ya dude good for you
What an amazing attitude, I imagine its very easy to just get in a slump in a situation such as yours.
Congrats man hope u learn well

I have a contrarian point of view. I want the instruction without first watching it played, which is hard to follow and imitate.

Park yourself in 'E' for a while then follow Marty's steering, he will head you in the right direction.

looping is built into the Fender Mustang GT series amps, included withe the 200 watt 2x12, but an extra $79 when getting the 40 or 100. The Mustang GT 40 will be following me home soon, and will be snagging the pedal, too. With kids in college, like me, I bet you are not looking to spend the same kind of $$$ Marty can on pedals, amps, and speakers.
mustang is garbage.....go get yourself a Boss Katana 50 or 100....way more worth your money.
@@Wes5501 You might not like it with your personal opinion but it's definitely not garbage.
People flexing by just showcasing how fucking brilliant they are at the beginning of videos really grinds my gears. Unless it’s Marty. Then it’s just fucking cool.
Just watched the first 2 mins and if I learn this I've got to buy one of those shirts
How ya doin on guitar now
Thanks Marty!
thank you so much for these lessons! have helped me out so much
Bought an acoustic, then an electric, then an amp, then found this.. it all makes sense. Thanks Marty.
I would like to request a set of lessons on "High Water Everywhere" by Joe Bonamassa
Please help.
anytime you want Ron!
Yay , the blue note will always sound right . Let your ears be the judge of what you play .
@@craigstratford5086 I'm already adding the BROWN note after a day.
@@markbell1982 you can seem to find a Brown note all over the neck unfortunately.
Thank You Marty, I’m learning guitar after 30+ years of bad guitar habits. This was an excellent explanation with precise camera angles for the E Scales! I’m looking forward to more videos and practice.
2:25 is when he starts the lesson, ur welcome
Marty,
You are a great guitar teacher! I am a singer/songwriter and you've really expanded my horizons with your videos. Thanks you, Amanda Garrigues
My guitar teacher rocks
That's you Marty haha
I'm jammin n drinkin lovin itj
*sadeth*
Thank you so much for doing this lesson. Someone finally clearly and simply explained what a scale is and how the notes are part of a family which all go together. Basic understanding which everyone else presumes we all know. Many surely do. I didn’t but needed to. Now I do. Thank you and for the great lesson in total!
Wait does the first riff from sweet home Alabama come from this scale too? Lol
not exactly but it does share most of the same notes!
Covid Sucks so I bought a guitar and thank you so much because I have watched all the accoustic beginners and am practicing daily and trying to get my tiny hands used to stretching across the neck of a guitar. Can no longer scratch an itch cos I don't have nails anymore
9:20 lmao
Alright, honestly Marty , my pinky is thrashed from all the fighting I've done over the years so I can't use it, My ring finger has to work twice as hard. So it would be a pleasure to learn all that I can using only my 3 fingers. And thank you for your videos, highly informative.
I love the pants off of you. your awesome!
ice pol That's gay wtf man
ALRIGHT!
LOVE THE FIRST LICK!
HAHA
Here I am, back in MartyLand, learning the proper way to do something. I have played by ear and by mimicking for so long that I finally ran into a whole bunch of brick walls. Thanks for helping me to break through those.
Dear marty, im currently 23 years old, im really good at guitar i guess you can say im a little bit more than intermediate, but ill never forget that i learned pretty much all the riffs that i know from you, 10 years ago lil me, just thank you
great channel!
I’ve been watching Marty since I was 16 I’m currently 25 just getting back into playing I’ve always loved his lessons I feel like I can grasp it very well
I absolutely love your channel Marty! Literally been watching your videos since I was 12-13… I’m 27 now, and still learning 😅
Thank you so much for all that you do!
I picked up the guitar again after 30 years of not playing...not quite like riding a bicycle...LoL. I really enjoy and appreciate your videos! Thanks
I played since 2014 and just learned this. You've taut me plenty buddy. Thanks
I learned this scale by learning to play Shakin All Over by the Guess Who. That particular song basically runs down this scale over and over again.
You’re a legend dude! Blues will never die
I know you read it and hear it all the time but thank you for posting these videos. They have been a great big help on my journey learning.
