I had a buddy that would do this on a hot - ish smoker/ grill with wood chunks as a snack at cook outs while waiting on the ribs to get done. Was amazing.
Oh I'm making this asap The slime on Okta is why most people shy away from this vegetable, but this recipe for roasting it will draw new fans for sure !
Wash it in morning and use it in evening.. so that they're completely dry.. Fry them in 1 tablesspoon of oil before using them in any dish.. get No slime
Young okra is usually best for other cooking methods on account that it's tender and soft, not hard. We used to have to keep picking okra that way while they're still young
I made some like this in the air fryer a couple of weeks ago and ate them all, about a half pound 😂 They were so delicious but I learned the hard way what okra can do to the digestive system 😬
We love it from Philippines ,since we dont have oven,we usually put in stew or simply boiled and dip into bagoong or soy sauce🥰🥰i miss life in province 😍
My aunt and my grandmother made the world's BEST FRIED OKRA! They were to die for. I I didn't know you could cook it any other way. Man, I wish I could have it again. They are both gone now. 😓
I grabbed a bag of the freeze/fried okra from Trader Joe’s, ate the whole bag, wished I’d bought at least two more. Okra grows fantastic in my area and I’m here for it! (Don’t mind me while I go buy a bunch of seed packets…)
So excited to try this. I'm always looking for an alternative to my addiction of fried chips and a super way to eat more veg...Win/Win! ATK rocks...10,000 thanks!
Dad was fron Okrahoma and Granny used to fry these after breading them with cornmeal. Yummy. Granny used to say that the problem with Okra was when you stand up, the okra stays on the seat.
I learned the way turkish women prevent okra from getting mushy. You never cut it, and take care to clean the section around the stem without hurting the skin!
I love roasted okra. Try olive oil and add whole or halved garlic cloves. You can also add sweet potato chunks/slices, onions...roasted veggies...mmm...
Okra or Vendi was our almost every week breakfast.. round cut okra + chopped potatoes with turmeric/hot chili powder/salt..fried in oil and served with porota ( oil fried tortilla) … okra can be cook with fish/ lantil / even by itself …
I’d also suggest a Moroccan appetizer made by fried Okra mixed with steamed tomatoes & chopped eggplants and sautéd together plus spices (coriander powder and etc)
Instead of that, slice them in 1/3 - 1/2-inch circles and cook them on high heat in a cast iron skillet. And use a blackening spice blend. Takes a while to get there, but any slime that starts at the onset of cooking is quickly turned into flavor, (And dries up). I've been cooking okra this way, (and in gumbo), for over 30 years.
Well I had high hopes but I covered for 12. Uncovered and cooked for 12…then cooked for 8…then cooked for 4….then cooked for 4 more….then a few were crispyish….then cooked 6 more and most are a little crispy. Oven temp was accurate with a manual thermometer. So needs some tweaking for sure
I have lived all over the world (Italy, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Canada) and all over US (FL, COLORADO, MINNESOTA, NJ, NE and NY from NYC to Western NY to Capitol region and up near Montreal. Have had okra in many forms and types of stews. Never roasted until moved tonGeorgia and then not until going to farmers market where they roast whole okra over open wood fire in a screen bin that rolls them around over the fire in batches. IT IS THE BEST. Can never get enough. Note - when handling fresh okra it has a fine hair on it that some people can be allergic to. Gives you awful itching rash. May need to use surgical gloves. TRY ROASTED OKRA IT IS THE BEST.
I love these people, but covering the okra with foil caused mushiness and didn't even out the browning at all. Do it without the foil and flip them. The truth is that you get slimy okra if you steam them for the first half of the cooking process.
I guess they didn't wash okra at all. Being an Indian I have tried okras in all different ways, and only deep frying has given me good results without mushiness.
You take green banana and roast in same way. Either keep thin or thick as per as choice. Use same method for taro. You half boil taro adding ordinary vinegar. All skin will come out without itching your hand. After removing skin bake it. Add lemon 🍋 or vinegar. Jay bharat.
@@kevinhullinger8743Yeah, happens to me. It's why I don't like eating okra. Didn't used to get a "laxative reaction" from it when I was a kid. Maybe I've gotten allergic to the slime or okra as a whole as I've gotten older?
Is it okay to wash okra right before roasting? Or do I need to pat it dry and give it time? Im Indian and I have always loved the deep fried diced okras. Deep frying wet okras take a lot of time and oil
I have. It works pretty good if you get the okra as dry as you can (pat it with paper towels, remove the ice crystals, etc) and then give it a few minutes in a hot oven to dry it a bit more before you prepare it.
Have you ever sated chopped Kara ~ 1 cm slices with thick slices of yellow onions after getting rid of slime and adding some salt, black and red pepper and say half a lemon juice. Absolutely delicious!
In the summer months, my grandmother would sun roast Okra on her balcony outdoors - under the blazing hot Mediterranean sun
I’d love to do that. But pigeons love my roof. And we have blazing hot sun out here in NM, for months….oven roasted for me
I was literally considering planting okra today, I have been convinced.
I had a buddy that would do this on a hot - ish smoker/ grill with wood chunks as a snack at cook outs while waiting on the ribs to get done. Was amazing.

I love okra any way you cook it, slime and all !!!
Agreed! Lovely and unique thickener in many Creole and African dishes.
A little vinegar cuts the slime.
That mucilage is so good for your digestive system.
@Billiards42 I'll have to try that !! ☺️
They kept saying it was slippery, and I'm over here going it's slimy! Lol.
Never liked okra until I just sautéed it simply in a touch of oil. Now I love it. Can’t wait to try this. Maybe for Easter 🐣 2024
We dice ours small and toss in oil, salt and cornmeal then roast.
You can also dust some gram or corn flour, pepper and seasonings you Ike to the cut okras and deep fry golden brown.
@@SassyPieHole999 I think it’s corn flour or a variation of it somehow
@@SassyPieHole999 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornmeal
@@SassyPieHole999yes, corn meal is a course grind while cornflour is very powdery.
This is why ppl don’t like them.
I love the purposeful avoidance of the word "slimy"! Haha!
My GF and I have a drink every time that Julia says "Makes sense!" or "Ummm!"
After 2 minutes, absolutely tanked haha

"Veneer!"
Oh hell yes!
@Billiards42 maybe you should try n be a TV personality rather than trolling others in that case. 🙄

Okra is my favorite green thing to eat.
Very pleased to have this recipe. Okra is a super food and prepared this way a great low fat snack. PERFECT!
Ok
I confess
I want to try this
Looks and sounds wonderful
Grilling them whole with just oil and salt is perfect.
Shopping for fresh okra is unpredictable. What you want is tender, small pods, not the overgrown woody ones .
It’s not difficult to grow and yields constantly for many weeks. The only thing you need is a sunny spot.
groww your own, its the most forgiving crop and gives fruit every day or two. good to freeze or dehydrate for winter too.
What you want is to grow one heck of a lot of it YOURSELF.
We love it from Philippines ,since we dont have oven,we usually put in stew or simply boiled and dip into bagoong or soy sauce🥰🥰i miss life in province 😍
Fried okra is just as crispy and delicious!
Thank you for the slim information. I love it slimy, but i’ll definitely try it roasted 🍽️
Roasting veggies is my fav way to cook them! Love this I should have known there was a way to cook okra without frying!
Buy them dried at Trader Joe’s. They are so crunchy and good!
SO GOOD! I am hooked after one bag.
Never knew this! Thank you.
I ate so much okra when I was a boy that my socks wouldn’t stay up. Love okra fried, dried, roasted, boiled, stewed, and pickled.

Never made okra that way. Will definitely try this. Looks yummy ❗️
I first discovered how wonderful roasted okra is when I had masala bindi--okra tossed with Indian spices and roasted. Talk about moreish!
I’ve been struggling to cook okra and make it palatable at the same time 😂 Now, I’ll try this recipe. I enjoy baked vegetables.
I love Okra. But l think my favorite way is to brown it in a cast iron skillet with bacon Drippings.
Absolutely
I learned the way turkish women prevent okra from getting mushy.

It’s due to the slippery texture that I couldn’t plant okra, but now I will plant and use this recipe

My son misheard the opening line and yelled out, "Oh no, don't add Oprah to a stir fry!" 😵
If okra is too large, they become tough, stringy, and tastless. I love the slippery slime in okra, especially in greens.
I learned this trick in Greece during the 50’s, main difference is the okra is left whole, tossed in olive oil with salt
What a diplomatic word, slippery. This is a great idea. I do the same thing with the giant zucchini that others are sure they don't like. Try it.
Thank you!
I’d also suggest a Moroccan appetizer made by fried Okra mixed with steamed tomatoes & chopped eggplants and sautéd together plus spices (coriander powder and etc)
These look so good. I'm going to try this and I'm going to swap the mayo for Greek yogurt.
Best way to have okra is breaded in cornmeal, and slow pan fried until very slightly charred around the edges
I got some of them today, thank you now I know how to cook it, cool and nice video

It's all true. I die to find fresh okra in the grocery store. Just roasted, then salted. No dipping sauce. Yum!
Try an Indian market. Popular in South Asian cuisine.
I love okra any way it's prepared. I even eat it raw when I'm cutting it.
I love okra! I have loved it my entire life…I was the kid whom adored vegetables. 😂😂😂

If you use sour cream instead of mayo it will be less calories for the dip.

“Slippery” is a diplomatic term. I love em, slime and all.

This is very much like the Indian dish “Kurkuri bhindi” (Translates to Crispy Okra)

I bet the texture is nice... I just saw some primo okra in an Indian grocery store 🤔

I wonder if this is something you could do with frozen okra? Fresh Okra not something easily available in my part the country.
