When nanami said he “I shouldnt” to haibara it confused me too but he didnt want to give yuji his last words thinking he was protecting yuji but actually he was protecting himself as he likely heard haibara last words he was traumatized him and geto on the morgue in season 2 episode 5 its was the beginning of his downfall he left jujutsu behind.

Mahito and Yuji are more alike than they want to admit, Mahito knows that but Yuji does not.
They both do what they feel is right. One exorcises curses while the other uses curses on humans. My boy Yuji has been through it all.
I imagine that Nanami was afraid of burdening Yuji with the thought that he didn't want to come back to being a Jujutsu sorcerer, he wanted to be in Malaysia and just chill. Had Yuji heard that, he'd probably feel guilty about Nanami's death. Most sorcerers never dies without regret.

Yes they are definitely alike! The moment Yuji accepts that is 🤯
And I agree, I definitely think Yuji would have felt really guilty if he would have found that out about Nanami

Akutami decided that he would kill Kento in the Shibuya arch, because he exhausted his resource and himself as a character, this can be understood, the hero of the second plan became a mentor, a teacher to the protagonist and gave him the right motivation while fulfilling his duty by profession, for Nanami is first of all the standard representative of the first class of magicians, in the battle with with Dagon, he perfectly coordinated the movements of the entire team, made quick decisions and showed his leadership qualities that came with experience, even after the colossal damage received from the vulcan, he did not give up, but continued to carry out the task, being with one foot in the grave.
*a spoiler that will help you understand the whole picture*
One day, Mei Mei told him one thing, if you want to bring back your old self, you have to go South, if you want to become a new person, go north, Nanami didn't know what he was trying to do, where should he go now?
Haibara showed the South, from which Itadori's escalator came, against the background of that warning. This is a double meaning of the choice that Nanami makes - to become his past self, while entrusting his duties to Itadori, without burdening him with a dying wish or curse.
Nanami Kento is a visual aid for how a minor character should be created that has a short timekeeping and is of great importance to the protagonist, literally a sample cheat sheet for the authors implemented in the plot - 100%

Goat'd summary. I think he's prime example of how gege writes in showing more than telling and building the bond of a character through that way. His characters have an implied internal life that doesn't require exhaustive exposition - just the behaviors, decisions, and small glimpses of thoughts. I first knew I was gonna like jjk when Itadori came back from defeating the young transfigured humans at the highschool and how that whole moral dilemma happened off-screen. I think Nanami's story was so well done in this way, like he had his own life and mind that was secret from us - that not all is told until it has to be said. Really good analysis of the character :)
