The Ravens In Winter

  • This is a duplicate reload of the same name cause I had the ravens names and where they were from mixed up in the original's intro. This footage is taken from our most recent 3200 mile Winter Road Trip this last December 2019. What makes this trip different is we that we actually planned a few things ahead of time. First and foremost, I've been trying to find time to go to Ogden, Utah, to meet a fellow raven lover named Jade Goodell, who has been working passionately and consistently with an older raven (about 20) named "Cronk" at the Ogden Nature Center. She's been sharing her amazing journey with me and I want to share some of what she's experienced with you. Then, my Utah visitors to Crystal Cove kept telling me I have to go meet this amazing raven named "Cash." So I'm off the meet her, and her handlers at the Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City.
    Then, there was a dinosaur track site I visited back in 2016, where I photographed tracks that I;m convinced could have only been made by a perching bird. The problem is they are in sediments that are about 40 to 50 million years older than what is currently accepted for the "time of birds." When I asked about them, the museum called them "baby dinosaur" tracks. (I'm not referring to the tracks at 2:04 ) I came home and did a lot of research and came to the conclusion they are definitely bird tracks for no dinosaur has a hallux that is this long and that is also flush with the rest of the foot. (See the series beginning at 45:47 ) As one who tracks birds all the time, I'd say these tracks are identical to what I'd expect to see from modern day jays, grackles and magpies. So! I ended up going to a good number of tracks sites in both Utah and Colorado, and in time I'll share the details of what I've found.
    And then there's the fun of counting ravens in the winter wonderlands of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah & Colorado! Of course! OK, I admit it's a bit long ... no way long, but look, I live at a beach with incredibly mild and almost perfect weather all year long, so even if I'm the only one who watches it, it's worth it to me!
    And for those interested here's the article by Hillary Davis that ran in both "The Daily Pilot" and "The Los Angeles Times"
    www.latimes.com/socal/daily-p...
    In time I will be posting some special footage of both The Tracy Aviary and the Ogden Nature Center and my interviews with raven handlers; Jade, Helen & Jackie.

    Loved your video! I loved that raven that followed your car. Was he alone and lonely? So he enjoyed your company? Beautiful scenery with the snow. We have lots of ravens and/or crows where I live and hike with my dogs. I still have trouble identifying which are crows or ravens.

      It just takes time and patience. Ravens are both extremely curious, but equally cautious. Let us know how it goes!

      David Senn they also love oatmeal ! I just got back from my remote cabin and my ravens were waiting. Usually they move closer to Kenora for the winter but the weather has been mild so they stayed in their territory. But ya oatmeal and mice are their favourites they can’t get enough, nesting will soon begin also. Take care

    I may have missed it, but I can't find in the video or caption an explanation as to why that particular raven was intently following you in your car -- on vacation, no less! Do you travel this road frequently? Does this raven recognize you? Very interested to know more about this.

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries  4 роки тому +4

      Yeah Teresa, I'd like to know also! I went back to this park specifically cause in 2016 one of the wild birds in the park, on Christmas Day ... came and sat on my leg! It was the most unafraid, wild ADULT bird I had ever encountered (young pink mouthed ravens maybe, but a black mouthed adult, this was very strange.) I was curious if it would happen again. So I went back to the same area, and didn't see any ravens in that particular area. But then as we were leaving this ...
      Here's what I can tell you; it's winter time, it's also about noon, so lunch time, and we were almost the only ones in the park that day. When I first noticed it following I slowed down a bit, rolled down my window and spoke to it, and then it kept following. It was strange cause it kept sort of "cutting me off", in fact I turned the sound way down cause my wife kept warning me to watch out. Which I was of course doing but it was getting quite close. So it almost seemed like it wanted us to stop. Maybe this raven has had luck in getting people to stop and feed it? But notice, it follows or leads us, us all the way to a picnic area, and that's interesting cause we had already decided that is where we were headed to have lunch. So, being lunch time perhaps this raven knows that some people will in fact stop and eat there? So perhaps he's a professional beggar? Whatever it was it was an amazing display, and adventure, and a first for me in this kind of behavior to this degree! And although I have had numerous experiences with "professional beggars" before, this one seemed to go to greater lengths. Again perhaps because it's winter and food sources are scarce?
      Thanks for the question Teresa! It really lifts my spirits to see there are some very special people like yourself, that take the time to notice the uniqueness of these one of a kind situations, and ask about them. Your the ones I love to do these videos for!

      Perhaps, but, knowing these birds the way I do I might venture to guess this bird has succeeded in another well known "raven" game? Notice how he gets pretty close sometimes, as if he's learned he can get people to slow down and stop? Also notice he lands right close to the road. It wouldn't surprise me to learn people think it's cute, slow down then stop, roll down the widow and throw food to it? I'd almost put money on it ... !
