Here after hearing about his retirement. He’s the last active driver from the Winston Cup days. It’s truly going to be an end of an era. Thank you for all the memories Kevin #4ever
Well if you want to technically even though he'll be only part time Jimmie Johnson will be active. But yeah it's sad to hear that Kevin Harvick decided to retire it was only a matter of time
It was actually the exhaust they made the exhaust in an x shape so it would sound cool a guy on UA-cam made a good video explaining the x pipe it’s a shame they stopped using them
I absolutely love this video. My Mom died two weeks before her beloved 2007 Daytona 500 and was a Harvick fan due to Dale's influence. For those who think that racing is NOT a sport, you're quite wrong. The stamina and mentality alone makes it a sport, and even more importantly the unseen members of the team.
It's not just that, every lap is different and bunches of laps are as well. It's knowing when and when you can run where you can run. It's quite a playbook development that goes to shit about 5 laps in lol. It's very much white knuckling every lap
I'm so glad this is still on YT. It reminds just how much is going on in a superspeedway race. When you watch it on TV it just doesn't look as intense as it does from the perspective of the driver. Constantly changing throttle input, cars dancing all around you, constantly bumping and getting bumped in a car that you have to turn to the right to go straight. I only wish it was shorter. 500 miles every weekend is a little much.
Harvick's insane drive through the field in this race after having to make an extended pit stop under one of the late cautions always gets overlooked by the finish. Glad this video is here to show that.
Three wide- come on buddy! Gives me chills. Can’t imagine how Kevin and the spotter were feeling when he got that last push on the backstretch to take the win.
Love this perspective. I'm an iRacer, let me just say this old Daytona surface is brutal. So hard to keep control with all the bumps when the racing gets intense. Also, it's astounding how smooth these guys are. Guys on iRacing bobble around and suck at listening to their spotters.
I know what it's like, I'm from the New York City Metro Area and I've driven in packs of cars going 65 MPH three-abreast on bumpy freeways throughout the city, and I maintain my cool, I'm not even flinching! Potholes galore in which you hit one it could jump your car! I find it fun.
I miss the old restrictor plate racing noise with the dual exhaust pipes. They need to bring back this package, because this was real restrictor plate racing.
Matthew Kowal plate racing is still good. we have have crazy pack racing now in 2015 :) im not saying this plate racing package sucks, but im just saying its still good.
Matthew Kowal it was actually two U shape pipes welded together at the center of the bends, kinda like an x pipe. a friend of mine named Mark Giles used to be the fan guy for Morgan McClure motor sports back on the 90's when they won Daytona a lot. that team was the pioneers of that sound. search "mark Giles camaro" on UA-cam and you'll see s video of his car on a TV show with that exact sound.
I’ll never forget this 500. Many will for the wrecking at the end (which was awesome) but Harvick. How he stole the show and earned every inch was unreal. Wow.
I remember this race. I was jumping up and down for Mark Martin. After they crossed the checkers my buddy looked over at me and said, “where the hell did Harvick come from?”. His drive through the pack was epic!
I was at this race some 16 years ago. I was 10 years old. Parents took me across country, we sat 1st row coming out of turn 4. Cars fly by and rubber flies up and hits you in the face. Ill never forget those moments. Miss those days alot. Was a jeff gordon fan so it sucked seeing him smack the wall 100 yards from the finish but he still got a top 10.
Also, this was the final Cup race that my late maternal grandfather saw before he passed away on March 1st, 2007. Even though he was still alive when they got to ACS of CA for the second race of the year, he didn't watch that race, and died the Thursday after during the off weekend between ACS of CA and Las Vegas. He said what a finish, and having a finish like that as the last race you saw in your life, that's how I want to go. What's weird is that he died on 3/1/07 and Matt Kenseth won ACS of CA a few days before, and Kenseth was born on 3/10/72. The first four digits in his abbreviated birthday match the date of my grandfather's passing!
This race made me a Nascar fan, I was kinda off and on watching it for a couple years but this race hooked me for life, one of the Top 5 finishes of all time not just in Nascar but in all of motorsport.
God damn, Kenseth with a hell of a save. The TV angle just doesn’t do it justice what these guys are doing in the car. I miss that engine sound and the old Daytona surface too
A lot of people don't realize that these drivers can't see to their left or to their right. They have to rely on the spotter talking to them through their radio to know if they are clear to their right or left.
Thought it was cool in an interview this week Kevin mentioned that Keelan had asked him about his Daytona 500 win, and so Kevin showed him this very video.
Im going to be honest and say. I always thought this was racing for weenies, and that it never looked that difficult to do. BUT, Im now going to say RESPECT! It takes skill to keep this car in the direction you want it to go. Can anybody offer some insight as to what speeds these cars are doing? Whats the engine rpm's on these? Flippen awesome!
Not sure what the RPMs were like on the Gen 4 cars, but on super speedways, they were doing anywhere between 180 and 195 MPH. Today the cars are in the 205-206 MPH range. The engines don't run at full power at Daytona or Talladega. Since 1988 restrictor plates (a plate that reduces airflow to the engine) are used to slow the cars down after Bobby Allison went into the catchfence at 212 MPH in 1987. In 2019, restrictor plates were replaced with tapered spacers (essentially the same thing but weaker) and are now used at all tracks in an attempt to improve the racing quality (which was pretty hit or miss this year). Hope this helps!
It's funny how so many say this was the greatest finish ever of the Daytona 500. It's actually the one I hate the most. I wish Martin had that one. Maybe in another lifetime there will be another driver that has as much class as Martin did.

4:04 That was an incredible save. If Kenseth lost it that would’ve been disastrous
Or if Kevin cutted a tire when he scrapped that wall a bit
If Matt lost it, mark may have won.
He almost cut across McMurrays bumper and McMurray even more nearly cut across the car below him
And for some reason Matt helped push Kevin for a chance to win the 500 🤷🏼♂️
They were going to do anything to get near mark
