Dude thank you so much. I've been stressing about applying for the RAF and about the interview. I go to college next year to get the 60 ucas points I need to be a pilot but because of covid it's hindered my study time. This video just took a big weight of my shoulders. Thanks man!

My uncle was Wing Commander Bob Rymarz and base Commander of RAF Hugh Wycombe. My advice - Aim high and you never know what you might achieve. All the best.

Some very good suggestions there. One other thing I may add in the pre interview checklist - read the invitation and bring ALL requested documentation with you and double check you have everything that is on the checklist!

Some quick pointers for the interview:
The more you know the more they'll ask. Whatever your level of knowledge is, they'll keep probing until they get to the end of it. So when asked about aircraft and you say Typhoon, they'll ask what its main role is. If you know that they'll ask what bases it operates out of. If you know that they'll ask what squadrons operate it. If you know that they'll ask what weapons it has. If you know that they'll ask what engine it has. If you know that they'll ask more specific specs. And so on, they'll just keep going until you say, "I don't know."
If you've only wanted to join the RAF in the past couple of months because you saw the advert on TV, just say that. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that answer - that's why they run TV ads, to get people to sign up! If you say you've always wanted to join the RAF since you were a little boy/girl, I can almost guarantee they will respond by asking if you did air cadets. If you didn't do air cadets, their bull shit alarms are gonna start going off.
Finally, they DO NOT have a sense of humour. Don't crack jokes to try and build a rapport, it won't work. A friend of mine used an example of him taking responsibility of the cooking during an outward bound week. He said "I decided to take on the role of chef as I didn't fancy eating salmonella for a week!" They just looked at him completely blankly where he was expecting a chuckle or a smile.

My choice was either to do 2-years National Service or sign on for an extended period, I signed on for 5 years. I would go back to arriving at my first medical posting to RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany, 24 December 1956, in a heartbeat. Operating Theatre Staff. You have a. Few typos in your various card details, easily done, I will let you find them. Regards, ex RAF, my one and only choice.

Hi I just got to the AST stage to become photographer. I am currently researching career options as I finishing my undergraduate degree in photography and feel this is opportunity as I have lots of volunteery experience as international photographer. I presume that as a photographer my tranning will be different and with my degree to some extent very qualified

Thank you so much for this video, I have my filter interview in a months time however this is via phone all due to COVID, I’m positive about my mindset and technical skills but I’m a bit concerned about my fitness, do you have any advice for anyone with regards to the fitness tests?
Glad it helped! And don't worry too much about the fitness, just ensure that you have a regime in place and you're working on both cardio and strength - but mainly endurance. The tests are designed to filter out candidates who give up, so keeping a fighting mentality is important when do the fitness tests to keep pushing yourself. Plan your fitness regime out for a week covering: cross-country running (at least 2.4km), sit ups, push ups, and endurance sprints. Get a copy of the bleep test (multi-stage fitness test) and ensure you get to level 10 at least. @@carbonsports239 hi mate, it went great thanks. The advice I can give is just stay calm, when I was in your position I was very nervous but once the interview had gotten going I had calmed down. As long as you have studied, I can guarantee you you will get through it, the recruiters are there to help you. So again, just stay calm and it’ll be fine, best of luck.

So the interview went good according to the recruiter but I missed the score for my desired role by a measly 3 points. I'll be retaking the test in a few weeks
@@bobgeldof5843 Ah no, I had a similar result. I missed the role by a few points, this was when I was 17 right enough. Planning on going for it again soon though. What role are you applying for?
Hi mate, I was applying for regiment gunner position. I've been thinking about withdrawing my application and coming back when I'm completely ready. What about you?
@@bobgeldof5843 That's fair enough mate. I'm stuck between INT or medic. Doing the same as you though, trying to get more prepared. Mainly fitness haha.
I've got my aptitude test next month and because of Covid my interview I believe will be done over the phone. Should I still prepare for it in the same way? Also upon looking online at the selection process interview it says its covers the same 5 areas that what you put when you applied.
Family, education, work, hobbies and pastimes, and why you want to join the RAF.
Should I have notes written down about the trade I want to do and some back ground into the RAF and their roles etc?
I don't remember having to be this prepared when I first joined back in 1998, but guess thing's have changed alot in the process of joining

Hi, i’m looking to join the UAS and apply for a DSUS to then join the RAF immediately after university. Do you think it would be appropriate to reference responding well to and enjoying the discipline/behaviour expectations from having gone to boarding school if it becomes relevant to expected/past behaviour/environment and such? Or would it be inappropriate?
Here is my view. Referencing your boarding school experience in your UAS and DSUS applications can be beneficial. Highlight how the discipline, structure, leadership roles, and behavioural expectations there have prepared you for the demands of RAF life. Emphasise your adaptability, resilience, and ability to thrive in a diverse community, connecting these qualities directly to the skills valued in military settings. This approach shows that your background aligns well with the RAF's expectations and requirements. I hope this helps?
Is it possible to do year 10 work experience with the RAF?

Hey just need some advice, I passed my interview today but a bit worried for the medical as I didn’t declare to the RAF that in the past I applied for the navy and was medically unfit. I’m all good now, however just worried if Capita kept my history and would get discharged for not telling the raf. Thank you
Hi, if it were me I would disclose it if it was a requirement to do so. If it isn't a requirement to disclose it, then you don't need to.
CareerVidz the career officer did ask if I have applied for the navy or army but I said no. Considering it was a year and a half ago I didn’t think it was necessary.

Do the RAF cancel your application if you fail to meet the bmi target? Is there any flexibility?

5 RAF bases , Lancashire ,Gloucester,maybe in Glasgow ,Coningsby ,that is all I know for now , if my memory serves me correct for the ones I just mentioned , I hope you tell me how many I got right sir.

Correct, but I'd recommend memorizing the easier ones:
Halton, Cranwell, Brize Norton, Lossiemouth, Mount Pleasant, Akrotiri, Gibraltar. These are the key bases for arguably the most important operations the RAF are involved in.

When I joined the RAF in 1999 I never got asked any questions lke this, I did zero research on any RAF bases and if I was asked to name any I would have come unstuck
Yeah, things have changed now.
@@CareerVidz I know people who have done recruiting at the Armed Forces careers office and they told me this video is not accurate

@@CareerVidz I got asked about NATO, RAF bases and current affairs when I joined in 1982. So it not new.
Do you have to know all of that about airbases and everything if i want to join the raf at 16 as an electrician?!

I applied as firefighter (airman role) and was asked if I knew any RAF bases. I think a brief knowledge of RAF bases (RAF Cranwell, RAF Benson, RAF Odiham) and some overseas RAF bases (RAF Ascension Islands, RAF Akrotiri, RAF Mount Pleasant, RAF Gibraltar) will give the recruiter a good impression. Yes mate. If you can display prior knowledge about the RAF that shows that you have taken time to research, and that you actually care about your application, you will be placed in a higher stead.

@@slipperypanda1690 What do you know already? Think of it as the more you know the more impressed the interviewer will be. If you can show you really care about the RAF and wanting to be a part of it, then it will put you in a good place to advance through the selection process. Good luck mate. :)
