This was a very popular r&b song way back in 1982. This was his biggest hit.

You can also tell by the instruments and style of this song. British funk and r&b during 80s usually sounded like this compared to American funk.

I remember watching Junior on Soul Train and realizing he was actually British. Loved his accent.

If you play NBA 2K, it used to be on heavy rotation there as well. I would always hear when my son was playing. Most of us didn’t know Junior was British, until he was on Soul Train, & Don Cornelius asked how he got started, & bro that starts to talk wit this ‘Cockney’ accent, & audience started to giggle, & he start laughin. They made the best of low budget video.

When it comes to 70s and 80s Soul, Funk, and Disco, I could go on all day. If you do some of these you I’ll give you more. Peace!

Though he was born Norman Washington Gascombe Jr., he was known professionally simply as "Junior." He was probably the first male British R & B artist to make it big on the American charts (you would never know he was British until you heard him talk). His follow-up song "Too Late" told a very poignant, sad story about physical abuse! Please also check out the similarly-themed "Take Your Time, Do It Right" by S.O.S. Band, who also hit with "Just Be Good To Me" and "Tell Me If You Still Care."

Heavy D used this song for his 1991 Hit "Is it good to you". Also, I think he was influenced by Steve Arrington.

A lot of music you hear from the 70s and 80s, will sound familiar because so much of it was sampled in Hip Hop

That's because it seems like EVERY artist nowadays samples songs from this era, and older. Really very little original stuff being put out these days-I guess they just don't have any creativity to write their own stuff.

I think even the artist "Bigg Steele" has a song with Krayzie Bone called "Let No Woman", where Krayzie Bone uses the hook "mama used to say" in his rap lyrics. Check the song out Just Jammin', I think the song is on UA-cam.

Yep, it sure is crazy how all of these beats, phrases, and melodies were stolen...I mean, sampled. Try "Too Late" by Junior as well. Yes, the time has come for you to explore the British R&B guys such as SOUL TO SOUL and their cuts, "Keep On Movin' ", and "Back To Life". As well as IMAGINATION doing "Just An Illusion" and the Euro pop/soul stuff such as CHANGE (with Luther VanDross) doing "Searching" and "The Glow Of love". This song as well as "Too Late" as I understand were recorded live at a club here in NYC. The audience was unaware that this was going to happen and were hushed constantly and told to be quiet. My friend Frankie Fuentes (THE FF who recorded with a slew of people back in the day. Look it up.), said Junior then came out, this short, skinny Brit, the pre-recorded music came on, and he did the vocals.
