  • Sign up for a Plex Pass: lon.tv/plexpass - Plex recently made their home theater PC (HTPC) client official and we'll take a look at its features and settings in this video. It supports HDR switching and lossless audio passthrough! More HDR info is below in the rest of the description. See more Plex: lon.tv/plexhdhr and subscribe! lon.tv/s
Additional HDR info from the Plex team:
HDR10: This works when using Windows. MPV creates a Rec.2020 swapchain in D3D11, which outputs to the display. There is a switch in HTPC’s settings to switch the display from SDR - HDR when you play HDR content.
HDR10 with Static Metadata Passthrough: One of the users in the forums has done a writeup on how to use some of the more experimental features of MPV to do HDR10 with static metadata passthrough. So the maxCLL and maxFall values from the content are sent through to the display. See forums.plex.tv/t/hdr-metadata... for more information.

This has been a hit and miss thing from many many years ago and it still gets me to this day. My Plex was working fine remotely right up until about 2 weeks ago then all of a sudden nothing ! Hi Lon! What kind of CPU is required to run the Plex HTPC client? I have an I3-4130T and AMD Radeon 6450 that runs Plex Media Server (for other clients like Android Plex mobile) and the SiliconDust DVR server and it's HTPC client just fine.
However, the same computer/CPU/GPU combo barely runs the Plex HTPC client. I'm trying to understand why there are seemingly huge processing requirements over the SiliconDust DVR server and HTPC application which work fine? Thanks.

Plex HTPC is great, apart from the fact it now is crashing 95% of the time when I try playing anything. The browser version works fine. I even tried downgrading the version installed, but it still fails to work.
It seems the issue started when they updated the ffmpeg version to support av1, but it always crashed after playing HEVC content...

What specific file type does Plex use for movie file with ATMOS? MKV, mp4? As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a mac mini with an attached USB C RAID device with my movie collection from DVD. My TV, Apple TV4k and AVR-Receiver are attached to all of this for audio. The receiver is ATMOS and 4K capable. I have been having trouble getting ATMOS from any of my movie files as I work in the higher res blu ray discs (ripping to create a movie file) working through every option on MKV and also Fab12. I am having no issues with 4K, just the ATMOS part. The Apple TV will play ATMOS from streaming services as seen on the receiver indicator light. Any idea on file type would be helpful. I also noted your response below on getting a Shield.

I believe that is exactly the point of Plex HTPC to use a remote control instead of a mouse and keyboard. I'm a very old plex user with an HTPC ( around 2012). They use to have a windows app called Plex Home Theater. The interface was awesome but it works only with a remote. I have the Harmony 650 remote just for that, I believe they drop that version around 2015 for the current Plex for Windows.
