Nice video. A buddy of mine used Tivo for years and swore by it. Then I bought a QNAP NAS with PLEX built into it and started playing around with it. It's really easy to setup and run via a browser as the interface. Before I knew it I had all my personal videos, movies, TV shows, and music on it. I now have thousands of them literally. The hard part was getting your person stuff organized and tagged. Expect to spend some time doing that. But with content like TV shows and movies PLEX is fantastic. It downloads all of the metadata content and displays it nearly perfect (every once in a while it downloads the wrong content but that is only about 5% of the time). I set all this up and didn't even realize Samsung smart TV had a client app built in! Now I have access to all that content (via my home network) on two Samsung smart TVs! I loved PLEX so much I bought a lifetime PLEXpass and now can share my content with anyone!
I am very happy to see that you went into some depth about transcoding. I see a lot of misinformation out there about this topic and this makes it very clear. Good stuff.
Instant subscriber. Nitty gritty details in a calm manner. Yes. Those below are looking for a step by step and this is more nuanced. Ill be back for more!
Plex is the probably the greatest app I have ever used. It just works, plain and simple. The interface is fast, simple, and good looking. I can stream my media to any device anywhere that I can get an internet connection. Love this app.
Great video. You should do the same on the unRAID, showing the steps on putting different options like transcode on cache and ram since for first users its not straight forward like on windows
The 1gb of ram per TB of hdd space is a Nas4Free recommendation, but also would only apply to FreeNas when you have De-duplication turned on. If you don't have it on, (it's off by default) then it doesn't apply. FreeNas recommends 8gb minimum without de-duplication on.
This was my choice for server hardware, Dell PowerEdge R610, Netapp 24 drive hard drive shelf. Use this for my webserver, home automation and plex server. Not issues. Watch TV and movies and generally use about 24% processor.
I bought a lifetime membership when Plex first began cutting it's teeth, and I'm so happy I did. Thanks so much for all your hard work in making Plex the ONLY mediashare choice that continues to be BEST choice. :)
Thanks for this video! I did this now with my old DVD collection and blu rays on the Plex app and totally love being able to stream them all, and keep them organized on this server. It works great
Finished watching your new video where you put Loki back in the rack and you talk about a new Plex server w/out GPU. I came across this video and it got me thinking on my upcoming build. What would you recommend Xeon or i7/i9 (10th+gen) CPU? Obviously the CPU would be with iGPU. Also would you use the same or different CPU if you where building a diy nas without Plex? In other words 2 servers, 1 for everything else and 1 for Plex only. Thanks
Hey Jason, do you need to add all 4 wd red pro 16tb drives to the Nas ds920+ all at the same time or can you start with one drive and add the other 3 at a later time
Great video as always. What do you think about the Nighthawk X10 R9000 running Plex? I am currently doing so and really haven't had any problems with the exception of remote connection staying connected. I have to port forward from my ATT router to the Nighthawk, so I haven't quite figured out why yet, but the remote server will not stay connected.
I was looking at setting up a Synology NAS server just for storage, I'm getting a SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME Cable HDTV (3-Tuner) XB 360 or if XB1 will work? for media extenders and set up an HTPC with Plex installed what are your thoughts on this. I'm looking to do away with all rented device from my ISP.
I'm considering the Intel NUC7 Gemini Lake Silver J5005 as my Plex Media Server with 8GB DDR4 RAM, Kingston 240GB SSD, and running Linux. You're thoughts?
There has to more to it. I had a low end CPU with a pass mark score of ~2500 unable to transcode 1080i60 file, but a CPU with a score of ~1700 could. Obviously the playback on the same CPU was not a problem.
One Cuestion , for transcoding 1080p one or tow devices , this hardware is good? Intel Core i5 6400 2.7 Ghz Socket 1151, MSI Z170I Gaming Pro AC Socket 1151, Kingston ValueRAM 8GB 2133 MHz and storage two drives, one ssd 240GB for the operating system and 4 tb for the movies,tv shows, etc.. , is totally dedicated for plex server
I know it's an old video but I am running unraid and I am using the linuxio docker for plex. Your channel convinced me to get a plex pass but idk how to activate it in the docker. Any help would be appreciated
I understand why you want the server to be hardwired with ethernet cable. I assume you can cast plex from server to smart tv or other client thru wifi using smart phone, tablet, computer, etc.... If so wouldn't you need a wifi card in server or can you use standard router plex server is hardwired to for your home network? thanks
Hello, I'm sorry if this is a question that you've answered in your videos already. I've seen quite a few of them but to be honest, there is still much I don't understand. I would like to ask what basic NAS you can recommend which can serve as Plex server and storage. Estimating 2 streams at 1080p but mostly 720p within the same network only which is signed on to a plan 50mbps. Currently I use a computer which is setup to be able to handle the Oculus rift, which might be power consuming if I kept it on 24/7 for plex. So I'm thinking it might be better to use NAS so that my family members and I can use PLEX anytime of the day without having to turn our CPU on, since I believe NAS should also be more power efficient. Is that correct? if so, I greatly appreciate your advise. Thank you.
Thank you. I actually did see that video as well. So based on what I've said, that is what you would recommend? I live outside the US so I need to make sure I get the right unit as I won't be able to return it if it turns out its not what I expected and its a bit expensive. Again I appreciate your feedback and guidance. Thank you.
Great video as always. i set my plex server up and its working like a charm. My external family members signed up for a free account but when they try to watch movies via plex app, its asking them to sign up and pay. How come? Can you or anyone on this feed shed some light?
I make all my users direct play. That's how I get away with a Pentium G3258 A friend of mine uses a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and it works good for him too. Cheap and easy to find CPUs.
I loved plex 2 years ago when it didn't physically block unauthorized channels offered by 3rd party streams, so if plex can't let programing beyond it's control be free from internal control it is just like google.
i bought one of these a week ago, i couldnt get pass the fact the router its self was a P.O.S. lost packets, constant reboots, slow speeds. i can not recomend 500 usd for that router.
I use a Athlon 5150 with 4GB of RAM, even BluRay Rips are no problem (only on one Device of course) I heard Plex is going to get Hardware Acceleration, I hope I can use the HD 8400 of my Athlon to speed things up ...
Mainly to get more experience I moved away from FreeNAS to UnRaid. I can't even run one stream with my Xeon processor without buffering every 20 seconds or so.
I've got a 2012 i5 Mac mini and it streamed perfect to my roku box and then I got a amazon fire tv box now it's forever saying server not powerful a nough ? Any suggestions ?
I'm using PLEX locally on my i7 920 @4Ghz/6GB RAM and CONSTANTLY get buffering issues when playing on my Samsung smart TV, regardless if movie is 720p or 1080. Connection is great, 100% that's no the problem, PLEX is. I've tried every option available, but haven't managed to get it working as expected. Any thoughts? I use PLEX exclusively for this one TV, no other connections to it being made.
I'm new to the Plex Media Server I am looking at getting our first mass specifically for streaming my home media 1 GB of RAM for every terabyte of storage unless I'm missing something that's not even possible most NAS only have a maximum I'm 64 gigs compatibility of RAM finesse I'm looking at has 10 Bays capable of 18 terabytes each so if one turd 1 GB a terabyte it would have to have 180 gigs of RAM this particular system says it can only support a maximum of 64 gig
Widows does seem to playback better than Linux and kodi video quality is a massive downgrade compared to plex. I'd like to try plex on apple if plex is made for that.
if i have an older nas drive and build a small plex "server" can i use the nas for storage of the media and the plex "server" to run plex and let it do the cpu intensive tasks?
You need to map it out first. I mapped it out to a folder on my nas and then I just sort them from there weather if its movies or shows and then just update the database.
Oh my bad i misunderstood the question. Why don't you use your nas as your plex server? From what im understanding is that you have a drive on your pc that is your plex drive and that all your media is stored to your nas. You will physically have to move it there.
Don't use the nvidia shield TV as a plex media server. It can be a fine plex player, however The shield is not powerful enough to support most 1080p playback as a server. Also if you use NAS devices to store your media the shield is known to drop the devices and not pick them back up for weeks at a time providing connection failure messages. Meanwhile Nvidia help desk is useless and won't support. Get a Mac mini
Good Morning your videos are a lot of help Thanks. This first started out for me as a means for my mother to watch videos for free while she is home without breaking the budget I got a Roku Stick added her to my Wifi Hotspot devices installed plex and were all good. Well this now has grown to something unexpected My family knows me to the IT guy of the family anyway I have no server experience at all sure I have built machines and repaired them this is the next level for me and I need some help. What started out a hardrive and a Laptop has ballooned into me having over 10TB of Movies and TV shows with over 40 users all family mind you, so Its time to build or buy a server. First time it crashed was last night while my children had a get together with over 20 guests all on my guest network in addition to 2 gaming systems, tablets and laptops all using Wifi at the same time. Know this before going in: If your internet connection goes down, nobody, even those on your own network connected via ethernet, can access the plex movie library.
Nice video. A buddy of mine used Tivo for years and swore by it. Then I bought a QNAP NAS with PLEX built into it and started playing around with it. idontgiveafork can I stream FLAC files to my phone while I’m at home, or does it transcode it mp3 ?

Excellent quality content. Would have loved to see a recommended build for beginners

I use Plex mainly for streaming to phones and tablets, and a second TV, use the BD discs in main av setup, handbrake with X265 for encodes 👍🏻
I’ve started my first plex server went with lifetime pass it’s gonna be amazing can’t wait
Did I miss the part where he actually gets started on the project?
The 1gb of ram per TB of hdd space is a Nas4Free recommendation, but also would only apply to FreeNas when you have De-duplication turned on. If you don't have it on, (it's off by default) then it doesn't apply. FreeNas recommends 8gb minimum without de-duplication on.

if you can afford the lifetime Plex package i would highly recommend it as i found that a continuous monthly payment does get a bit expensive.
I bought a lifetime membership when Plex first began cutting it's teeth, and I'm so happy I did. Thanks so much for all your hard work in making Plex the ONLY mediashare choice that continues to be BEST choice. :)
I use an old laptop set to run in low power state from bios as an always on plex server :)
I use a 2007 imac with a 4TB 7200 RPM drive and 4GB of ram. It works great no lag and have had the computer on for 3 months now without a problem
thanks this is just the video i was looking for
Thanks for this video! I did this now with my old DVD collection and blu rays on the Plex app and totally love being able to stream them all, and keep them organized on this server. It works great

I would have used your link but I already have my own Plex server and pass bc I love having everything I want/need at anytime I want.
Also if I have to renew my membership once the year is up, will I be able to use your link?? Btw awesome name!! Lol
PLEASE DO A 2020 version. Please consider the following devices too
1. Raspberry pi
2. mini PC
3. NUC
loved the video just curious how do you feel about wd ex2 ultra for a newbie to plex
I'm considering the Intel NUC7 Gemini Lake Silver J5005 as my Plex Media Server with 8GB DDR4 RAM, Kingston 240GB SSD, and running Linux. You're thoughts?
I love plex I'm very tempted to get the lifetime package.
There's literally no reason NOT to get a Lifetime Sub...GET IT!
I'm way beyond this but you make a good video and I wanted to make sure we were on the same page :)

In regards to raid, do you recommend a raid controller, or have you been okay with software based raid?
Amazing video as always Jason!

should be fine for a few streams, yes. Especially if they are in your own home network and can be direct played.

Just hard wire server to your wireless router and it will be accessible on the network.
Great Video. Very informative and everything you need to know about Plex.

any build lists? trying to replace a MacMini server and don't even know where to start! Thanks for the great video.
All 1080p movies in my library are 10mbps+ huge difference compared to the small 2,5mbps movies!
Awesome video... You just earned my subscription!
Well done, thanks for the video
Question I just bought a drobo 5n2...to run plex do I need to used a computer...even though drobo have plex in it?
Starting a plex media server can be comPLEX
To start a plex server, get any pc or Mac, google plex server, download, then and click on run.
No Way!
Kinipshun 😆
could you post links to the various websites that you mentioned in your video?
Great video as always. i set my plex server up and its working like a charm. My external family members signed up for a free account but when they try to watch movies via plex app, its asking them to sign up and pay. How come? Can you or anyone on this feed shed some light?
xeonvirus66 Thanks for the response. They have no problem getting on via browser/website.
I pre-convert everything to MP4 doing this keeps the CPU Low.
Thank you.
I make all my users direct play. That's how I get away with a Pentium G3258

Omg this video is 7 years old. Who gave a toss about building your own home server for movies? I barely had a 1gbps internet connection back then
Hey thx for the video. what about a video for using nighthawk x10 as a plex server
I want to but they wouldnt loan me one :(
i bought one of these a week ago, i couldnt get pass the fact the router its self was a P.O.S. lost packets, constant reboots, slow speeds. i can not recomend 500 usd for that router.

+Brandon Hurst something's gotta be wrong then, that seems odd
Yes. I'm going to run a full memory check tonight and start with that. It's just odd to me that everything worked fine on FreeNAS.
I've got a 2012 i5 Mac mini and it streamed perfect to my roku box and then I got a amazon fire tv box now it's forever saying server not powerful a nough ? Any suggestions ?
Have wanted to use Plex for a while, but am pretty nervous about allowing a third party the ability to view my storage contents.
Do you use facebook
svanur Adalsteinsson No.
what case are you using?
I'm 3years late watching this but I think using a discrete GPU deserves a mention.
I'm using removable Archive drives I do backup Once in awhile for Drive thermal nuclear failure Security
I'm using PLEX locally on my i7 920 @4Ghz/6GB RAM and CONSTANTLY get buffering issues when playing on my Samsung smart TV, regardless if movie is 720p or 1080. if i have an older nas drive and build a small plex "server" can i use the nas for storage of the media and the plex "server" to run plex and let it do the cpu intensive tasks?
+Rorey Foco sure. Your nas can host the files for your plex server easily
That rocks, thanks for the reply, and for the videos they help alot
If I select my nas for where the media is will it download the media from my nas to my plex servers hard drive?
You need to map it out first. I mapped it out to a folder on my nas and then I just sort them from there weather if its movies or shows and then just update the database.
Millergram ya I know that but does it download the files from my nas to the hard drive on the plex server (on windows pc)?
Oh my bad i misunderstood the question. Why don't you use your nas as your plex server? From what im understanding is that you have a drive on your pc that is your plex drive and that all your media is stored to your nas. You will physically have to move it there.
"can be a little comPLEX" lol
Damn you beat me to it.
Daniel Lyons well spamn
@@daniellyons6269 There's a guy that beat both of you guys 2 years ago. Lol
any updates to this?:)
can we build this using aws?
Great content as always, I use a dedicated Ubuntu server
I use a dedicated Ubuntu server as zpool storage very nice ; )
thanks for all your help and videos with plex. I sent bytemybits a friend invite on my plex account just to say thanks hope you injoy

how i look at plex backups is this worse case i have to spend a weekend re ripping my blu-rays so i dont care one bit about redundancy
I deleted my home server on accident, what do I need to do?
I want your shirt!
missed Xigmanas as a server
Dude, you should contact LinusTechTips, and tell him he needs to do his research.
he might as well change his name to Plex. Great video but it seems all his videos is plex talks. either way He gets a thumb up
how do i set up plex to run with a vpn. with my vpn on it shuts off my remote access
i only have gigabit upload
My upload Speed Is 378.9 kbps think it's good enough HD ready😓😧 fuck I really need to move
Does it do wake on lan?
LLCwr41th Yes Plex can work locally
'T is a good video, mate. But can you trust a man who can't shave his neck? Yes, yes you can.
Great video :)
+Peter Clarke thanks! 😎
do some videos of corporate suppression of the internet and our free will and how PLex has gone corporate and shut down all channels anyone watched.
and my speed its 300mb download and 30mb for the uplodaded
Why is this laptop keep buffering
Are you using it as a server or a playback device?
Is it transcoding or direct playing?
....ill just stick to hard copies lol
wish plex would let a gpu in a server transcode 😠

no
