    This is one of the saddest episodes of Doctor Who I've seen. So many deaths. I was pissed that the asshole survived but it gave me relief to see the old man live with a chance at a better life. I'm excited for the Partners in Crime reaction.

    I don't understand how he can be this confused by one word. It's not a reference. There's no layers to it. There's no context for it. It's exactly what it seems to be. It's just a fun way of saying 'let's go'. I've never seen someone's brain reject a single foreign word this hard, and it's been going on for two seasons.

      Late reply. As a Brit I feels like it’s the nature of being American that is confusing them. Until 2010’s when the teaching of Spanish became more widely done I feel like most British people learn remedial French compulsory where as my understanding is in America (because of Mexico) it’s more common to learn Spanish, so perhaps if it were ‘Vamos’ they’re get it more I don’t jnown

      @@tree1568 Spanish & French are equally common languages to learn in the american school system

    • @hdns4
      @hdns4 Рік тому +12

      @@maurice9766 That's definitely not true. According to American Councils for International Education, 69% of K-12 students enrolled in a language are enrolled in Spanish, while only 12% are enrolled in French. This is probably because taking a language class is a requirement in many high schools and Spanish is often known as the "easier" language to learn compared to the others. However, even putting that aside, you also have to take into account that Americans are simply exposed to Spanish in general more than any other language. The U.S. borders with Mexico and is home to a lot of Mexican immigrants. As a result, Spanish is by far the second most spoken language in the U.S., with 41 million speakers compared to the third most spoken language, Chinese, with only 3.5 million speakers. And French, by the way, is only the sixth most spoken language in the U.S. with 1.2 million speakers.
      And yes, for the sake of moving back towards the original purpose of this topic, it definitely seems as though French is spoken a fair bit more in the U.K. than it is in the U.S., though I'm actually having a bit of trouble finding a good source on specific percentages. But Rowan's reasoning for why Americans know a lot more Spanish and British people know a lot more French seems sound.

    Remember how in Utopia the Doctor said that the human race always tends to return to the basic humanoid form, regardless of whatever other mutations we might go through, since it's basically just the optimal, most efficient way to construct a body? The implication is basically that a lot of other species are like that too, which is why there's so many "humans" on other planets which are technically other species, but basically evolved to a similar stage of existence.

    • @somerandomguy2073
      @somerandomguy2073 6 років тому +22

      Wolf6120: The expanded media gives another explanation. At the start of Time Lord civilisation Rassilon was *slightly* egotistical and as well as doing a ton of other, slightly insane, tyrannical nutjob stuff, he distributed the template for the Time Lord appearance across time and space. That triggered parallel evolution and caused thousands of different species to evolve to resemble them (and him, particularly). As the Doctor says, he doesn't look human - we look Time Lord. That explains why the variety of intelligent life in the Doctor Who universe is slightly narrow.
      I think it makes a bit more sense that it's just a powerful nutjob with a God complex altering the universe than the idea that we are somehow 'perfect'. Scientifically, our appearance isn't so incredible that the universe would agree and make every other species resemble us.

    This has to be one of my top episodes, certainly among the Christmas specials at least. It's always great when you get a cast of one-off characters, because you have no guarantee that they'll be okay, which this episode uses to perfect effect by making them all distinct and likable in a relatively small timeframe. It's so sad and beautiful all at once, plus the Doctor has that awesome speech midway.

Love how hyped it gets me for the episode! Also, I love how Eric just doesn't get the whole 'Allons-y ' thing which is funny but I hope now he just now enjoys it cause after all, it is an old earth saying ;) hehe

      It was a happy accident not only has Cribbins been in Who before but he was written in to replace Donna's father seen in the runaway bride. Sadly the actor passed away unexpectedly in real life and his passing is referenced in the end of time pt2 "Have that, have that on me" beautifully done it was.

    2:28 Eric just said what I've been puzzling over for years. The TARDIS has so many incredible features, and it doesn't have a "return to owner" protocol (chained to either a key or the sonic screwdriver)? Considering the number of times the Doctor gets separated from it, either by time or space, I'd think he would have added one.

    • @Hanmacx
      @Hanmacx 6 років тому

      Donald Watson there where a few scenes where the tardis did teleport to the key if able

    Even though the TARDIS originally lands in the future, the furthest back in time 'Doctor Who' has explored at this point is in 'The Girl in the Fireplace' (unless you count the brief Earth creation in 'The Runaway Bride').
    (edit: No, Shakespeare came before Reinette so the earliest point in time visited by this point (discounting 'The Runaway Bride') was in fact in 'The Shakespeare Code'. Thank you, Ian :p)

    • @erosion271

      Well yes, obviously. I'm referring to the 'Doctor Who' they have watched ("at this point" meaning at this point in their viewing).

    • @iancossey105
      @iancossey105 6 років тому +1

      'Girl in the Fireplace' is 1700s; 'Shakespeare Code ' late 1500s/early 1600s.
      Also, as erosion271 says, Classic Who went ALL OVER the place in history - Stone Age, French Revolution, Roman Empire, Wild West, C13th China etc (and that's just the First Doctor) - so it's kind of weird seeing them semi-complaining about the show not going to more diverse places/times. But, bless 'em, they're not to know...

    • @ojwh1933
      @ojwh1933 6 років тому

      Ian Cossey Original comment has been edited, thank you.
      Having checked:
      The first past date of 'The Girl in the Fireplace' is confirmed as 1727 and of course, that changes as the Doctor jumps years ahead.
      And the Doctor guesses 1599 as the date in 'The Shakespeare Code' but he obviously can't be far off enough for it to be post-1727.

    • @iancossey105
      @iancossey105 6 років тому +1

      OJWH Thanks for checking the specific dates - always interesting to know! Shakespeare was born 1564 and died 1616. 1599 was around the height of his fame and output (I believe he finished Hamlet around 1601), so I guess that all makes sense, although...
      Macbeth, which is obviously heavily referenced in the episode, was a few years off (1603-ish) - since most people believe its Scottish setting (and possibly its themes) were 'inspired' by / a reaction to the ascension of James I to the throne after Elizabeth's death in 1603 - so... I think maybe the episode's history is a little off.
      That plus, if I remember rightly, amongst all those lines Shakespeare gets quoted back at him (and writes down to use later), I'm sure at least a couple were from plays he would've already written by that point. (I'm a bit of a Shakespeare groupie, can you tell?) But hey, its Dr. Who. If we can swallow the existence of Carrionites, a year or two's discrepancy shouldn't be anything to get too worked up about! Thanks again. :-)

    What's hilarious is that he said he was there at the story for Christmas & is Crowley who apparently helped make gallifrey... So those are two separate times where the doctor could have seen Crowley and used that face to remind him that he is a demon... Because of the things that he has done.

      Elana: He has done in New Who, as well. Jack is from a human colony in the 51st Century. And he also mentioned in a Big Finish play that he isn't even certain that his ancestors were human at all. We just assumed that they were because he looks like us (but so does the Doctor).

    • @elana1463
      @elana1463 6 років тому

      For the alien thing I was referring to times he traveled only with non humans..not crews mixed with humans and non humans or stuff that only lasted for one episode.
      And of course talking about nuWho in the comments has always the difficulty that I have to be careful not to use any knowledge from future episodes, which can be difficult sometimes(in the sense of "did that happen already"..not in the sense of it being hard to not want to spoil anything)
