thank you :)
Nobody is exaggerating when they say that the "I need a Hero" scene is the best scene in the saga, in Dreamworks, in animation, and one of the best in history.
Movies need to stop using it because Shrek 2 did it perfectly and can never be topped
It was already done better in short circuit 2 back in the 80s
You exaggerating.
Best scene in animation is the chase scene in The Wrong Trousers
Best in Shrek, sure. Best in Dreamworks is a reach, they’ve had a lot of pretty incredible moments.
I wonder if Jennifer Saunders knew that when she stepped in to that recording booth to sing "Holding Out for a Hero" that she'd be singing to one of the greatest animated sequences in history.
She had the energy for it so maybe.
I doubt it. Whenever you hear people talk about producing anything that later became a cultural phenomenon, they almost never anticipated it. I feel like when you try to make something, with the intention of it becoming the biggest thing in the world, it almost always fails
It's honestly become so iconic for me. I prefer it so much better to the original version.
Jennifer Saunders >>> Bonnie Tyler
@@emersoninfinitystone5785 Let's not do this. Jennifer Saunders had immense respect for Bonnie Tyler's work, and for a good reason. Their performances are both phenomenal. It's okay to love one more than the other, and vastly prefer one to the other. But let's not turn it into a "She's better than her!" competition.
@@writershard5065 By all means, i'm not. I'm just voicing a simple personal opinion. Whether you choose to take it literally is your problem. You make it sound like i'm flat out calling Bonnie Tyler bad when i say i prefer Jennifer's cover, and i'll politely thank you to not accuse me of such.
Don't tell me 'let's not do this' when your the one pointing fingers.
The finale to Shrek 2 is unironically amazing. It manages to be epic, funny, touching and thrilling all at once. An underated classic.
one of the most underrated movies. no one likes this one :(
@@DaDaPieGamingwho ever said they don’t like this one lol
@@ChristehzROTMG well surely some people have to dislike it for it to be underrated. you can't have an underrated movie which everyone likes that'd be silly
@@DaDaPieGaming Except it's not underrated at all, Shrek 2 is more liked than Shrek 1. And Shrek 1 was a cultural phenomenon.
@@DaDaPieGaming What makes you think that this film is underrated lol?
22:49 The movie had the 20th anniversary rerelease the SAME week OJ Simpson died so that joke HIT in the theater that weekend 😂😂
That is amazing
I didn't think about that, i wished i had seen it
Wait how did your coment was 2 weeks ago while this video just dropped today????
@@sentaisuper5913 as a yt member, they got early access to the yt video
@@noahwesterberg8566 oh i see this all the time, finally i now know. Thanks you!
The finale is one of the best in all of cinema, and Jennifer Saunders' cover of "Holding Out For A Hero" will never be topped. Also, Larry King as the Ugly Stepsister is hilarious.
Saunders.
The voice of the ugly stepsister and the red carpet host changes depending on where the film is released so I had never heard Larry King do the voice or seen Joan Rivers as the host
Smh after all the times I've watched this how did I not realize that was Larry King 😲🤦♀️
I wonder how many people even remember that the character of Zorro existed, let alone that Puss in Boots was a parody of Antonio Banderas' recent depiction of him in The Mask of Zorro (1998.)
The European fairy tale character Puss in Boots was a talking cat famous for killing an ogre by tricking him into transforming into a mouse and eating him. He was known for his deceitful intelligence and ability to manipulate people, and the strange habit of walking upright in a man's boots. He was often depicted as well-dressed, sometimes with the feathered hat, but the cape, sword, fighting style, and association with Spanish cultures all came from Banderas and Zorro. Now they are synonymous and nobody remembers why. lol
Ummm I should hope so. Zorro was the most educational movie I watched as a kid on the subject of HOT MAKE OUT TECHNIQUE.
@@lafatte24 oh you mean the mouth eating technique, it works depending of the person lol it's also weird to watch in third person
Shrek 2 is the rare instance of when a sequel movie is considered equal to or greater than the original.
Jennifer Saunders kills "Holding Out for a Hero" as the Fairy Godmother.
Not that rare 😅, you have: Toy Story 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, HTTYD 2, X2, Spiderman 2, Spiderverse 2, and Puss In Boots the last wish, just to name a few 🤔.
@CLDJ227 You named what 7 movies? Out of how many hundreds or maybe thousand of movies that exist?
@@Taidowerwell, smart ass. Sequels in general are considered better across media, early movie culture and a bad reputation because most movies before Star Wars were book adaptations, generally losing the story of the series in the sequel or changing it for a cash grab. But since Star Wars, there is about a 50:50 sequel beings amazing. If you look at major releases going back since 1980 4:13 (ESB release) you have Aliens, Rocky 2, Halloween 2 and Star Trek 2. There’s a few others on that list considered great sequels, and every year since follows the math, making your argument completely void of logic😂
Are we fighting in the comments section of a m’f’ing Shrek 2 reaction?
@@CLDJ227that's still rare. The ones you named are the exceptions not the rule
Puss grabbing his hat while the door is closing is 100% an Indiana Jones reference
The DVD version of this had a shrek American idol feature and it had Simon Cowell and everything😂 it’s hilarious and so entertaining if you’re able to find it somewhere!
Oh yes, I always loved that part. Great addition
Fun Fact: In an interview, the filmmakers confirmed that Dragon was supposed to come in during the fight scene at the end and reveal that Donkey drinking the potion turned her into a giant, fire-breathing pink pegasus
While watching this i was wondsring was dragon turned into so thank you for this fun fact
I've wondered this for 20 years and now I finally have an answer
Ok but a giant, fire-breathing pink pegasus sounds really cool. I wish we could’ve seen it
Dude you don’t do that to a pregnant woman. Like her body wasn’t going through enough!
thank you and finally, after 20 years, I now know what happened to Dragon, been wondering about this forever
One of my favourite things about the gingerbread man scene is how the castle guard are trained and equipped for this specific scenario. They always knew this day was coming.
i confess it was several years before I got the "White Bronco" joke.
Still dont get it, thats the one reference i dont get, could you explain it maybe🙏
@@divinelangene6813 OJ simpson's car
@@charlieg2262 😂😂😂😂😂
That's a top tier joke. I didn't get the reference when I first watched it because I'm not American and I had no idea about the whole OJ case.
@divinelangene6813 it's OJ Simpsons car chase, he also drove a white bronco during the chase
I'm sad they didn't include the "They don't even have dental" line from them breaking into the factory. One of the best lines tbh!
Fun fact: Godmothers and Charmings voice actors both once auditioned to play Disney villains before. Fairy godmothers voice actress Jennifer Sanders auditioned for Ursula from the little mermaid. And Charmings voice actor Robert Everett auditioned to act as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, he supposedly didn’t get the role because he didn’t sound arrogant enough, he definitely seemed to have token that criticism to heart and improved with this role.
Eric laughing at every little reference makes me so happy. I hope they finish off the series. Shrek 3 isn't great but it's worth it to get to 4 because that was a great ending
Same, I don’t get the dislike for 4, it’s definitely a step up from 3.
@@TheMisterman15i agree. I love 4 just as much as 1
@@TheMisterman15do ppl dislike 4? I thought it was accepted that 4 was better than 3
3 is great, 4 is not. That is all.
@@Kevmaster2000 it's okay to be wrong
There are a lot of little details that point out that the King was indeed the same prince who turned into a frog from the fairy tale. His clothing and the decorations around the castle and in King & Queen's bedroom have lots of green on them and the picture by their bedside has the King walking on a bridge above a lily pond, the Queen's comment on "their first kiss by the lily pond", the female frog recognizing him at the bar, Fairy Godmother mentioning how she helped him get his own "Happily Ever After".
Fun fact, Antonio Banderas has done the English and spanish version of puss since this movie aired, and he said that he liked the spanish version more. Therefore the creators decided to give it a chance at the latin-american dub and have since stayed that that's the best version of the movie, even more than the original.
Yeah, I've heard about it too! I've always only seen the movies in Spanish ever since I was little and the jokes I've heard now in English are really good but they don't compare to the Spanish ones. I believe there was also a story about how the director went to a screening of the movie in Spanish (but not sure if was 1 or 2) and he noticed the audience laughing more than the screenings on the US and had no idea why so he thought they must've done a great job with the dub
The first Shrek was a direct shot at Disney because Jeffrey Katzenberg had left Disney to start Dreamworks. Farquaad was implied to be Michael Eisner, Dulok was Disneyland/World, obviously lots of Disney movie references, etc.
In comparison, Shrek 2 is just a shot at everything. 😂
In 2004 we had two of the greatest sequels of all time: Spider-Man 2 and Shrek 2
We sure did.
Not a sequel but we also got the Incredibles that year too
The fact that Donkey changed to becoming a horse during his "Happily Ever After", that means that Dragon also changed, and she still realized that Donkey was her true love even after her change, so she went to him after changing back.
Apparently she was originally supposed to show up during the final battle as a giant fire-breathing pegasus or something like that
12:50 Fun fact: depictions of Puss in Boots from the 1800s and Zorro from 1900s usually have a cape or cloak. But it was really hard for animators in 2004, so they included for once single scene, in which Puss throws the cape away. No more cape for the rest of the film.
23:00 I love that scene! Shrek (white man) being pepper sprayed with a mill, Donkey (Eddie Murphy), a black man, having multiple knight officers forcing onto him while shouting “police brutality”! and Puss in Boots, a hispanic, having “catnip” planted onto him 😂
If you look real close, you can see that the knight already had the catnip in hand- he planted it on Puss.
WHAT! Colour me racist because all these years I never once questioned that it was his catnip 😂
LOLZ
That Fawlty Towers joke is incredible, if it weren't for you I would never have noticed it.
"I need a Hero" peaked here and it was the first mainstream use of it in movies
Short Cuircut 2 begs to differ
@@MegumiMary you don’t know how much I cringe when anything else - like especially Mario - uses the song. It just doesn’t compare people.
I would consider Footloose to be pretty mainstream.
@@Depth217 I think the only other time I liked it being used was in the Knuckles show but that was because it was supposed to be so cringe
It was like they were admitting "We're never going to top Shrek 2 so let's lean into the fact that doing this is cringe"
@@JL-zw3tj Short Cuircut is already considered a "Cult Classic" meaning it doesn't have mainstream appeal
A sequel to a Cult Classic has diminishing returns
Shrek and Shrek 2 were big Box Office successes at the dawn of the internet age- doesn't get more mainstream then that
I'll never not laugh at the catnip ''Its not mine'' 🤣🤣🤣
The KNIGHTS scene may be the funniest scene ever put into a children’s movie.
The white bronco, and pepper grinder kills me everytime 🤣🤣
I hope to god that at the opening of every Shrek reaction, by asking "When did Shrek come out?" and Rick taking out his phone to look it up.
The white bronco joke is gold!
Shrek 2 is one of best sequels ever made.
1:49 Eric is still traumatized by the deaths of Mama Bear, Farquad, and caught the masturbation joke in that scene 😂
This is the single best version of Holding Out For a Hero. I always laugh when stuff like Mario or Loki tries to use it, because it will NEVER compare to the Shrek 2 cover. 😤
Loki never used it😂 and there’s better uses, this is good, but only because it’s ripping off the movie that did it better
@@cl4-tpgaming
The series ‘Loki’ the song is used in one of the episodes.
@@Darceus2000agh, your right, I remember now, still doesn’t change the fact that this is great because it’s a parody, and no one under 25 could tell you what it’s a parody of
@@cl4-tpgaming being old isn't much of a flex. Most of us get there with no effort on our part.
As for "better", it's subjective. I prefer the Shrek version, both as a scene and musically.
@@Darceus2000Season 1, Episode 2, 3 minutes 26 seconds in.
It’s interesting to see how many people watched Puss in Boots but never watched Shrek. It’s like watching Lightyear without having watched Toy Story. I get that some people didn’t watch Shrek, grew up and had children during the release of Puss in Boots but still
I really cannot unsee Jaime Lannister from Prince Charming HAHA
This is one of the best sequels ever! Like, as a child, Shrek 2 is more iconic for me and more memorable than the first. Not that the first is bad, they are equal in greatness
“That’s Jamie Fookin’ Lannister!”
Prior to this, I never knew that the sequel to an animated film could surpass the original. Animated movies always had “direct to VHS” sequels that never lived up to the originals. As a kid it was hard to be excited for this movie. I literally walked out of the theater with my life utterly changed. Everything I thought I knew about what an animated sequel could be was completely flipped on its head. And studios realized the new reality of what they could be as well. This changed so much in the entertainment industry for the mainstream.
"Once you watch Shrek, you have to watch them all" - The writers
Jennifer Saunders absolutely killed I need a hero, and the credits cover by Frou Frou is a mood on its own
I like how dark and ominous the Frou Frou version is. It sounds like it should’ve come after a much darker, epic film, and elevates Shrek 2 even more.
No idea y but once the credits rolled when I went to the theater to rewatch this on a theater screen after 20 years I started tearing up also ngl that movie remix to your so true just makes that song better. But I do wish it would’ve been a remix to the entire 3 minute song so it wasn’t so short
@@ghostphoenix666 that nostalgic feeling😩🫶🏽
I like to think thats exactly how Eddie Murphy would be on a roadtrip
The wolf in the bed is always so funny to me idk why
Now Eric shall realize how truly necessary Shrek 2 was!
Y’all NEED to do a video reacting to the Shrek Karaoke Dance Party from the first one and then Shrek Far Far Away Idol from the second. Those are both essential viewing when watching the first two Shrek movies!
man when 'i need a hero' starts playing i always get emotional about how good the ending is, it's so well made. This whole movie is dope.
That dove crashing in the wall is the biggest laugh I've ever seen in a theater.
Also everytime I see Shrek in english it reminds me what an amazing job the mexican dub did, every single joke and line localized in the most perfect way
Standout performance in this HAS to be Jennifer Saunders as Fairy Godmother, she absolutely slays Holding Out for a Hero in one of the greatest final sequences of all time, absolute gem of a Comedian and Actress
In Puss’ original story, he’s known for killing an evil Ogre by tricking it to turn into a mouse. Don’t know how that works in his own series and films.
The best way to describe Shrek 2 is Dreamworks’ Guess who’s coming to Dinner with some fairy tale references.
Also, Holding out for hero is one of the greatest climatic scenes in cinema history.
I only learned recently that the actress who voiced the queen is Mary Poppins
Jennifer Saunders (Fairy Godmother) KILLED IT singing "I Need A Hero"! I remember this movie was how I was first introduced to the song and I absolutely loved it! 💜 💚
Can’t wait for your upcoming reactions on “Godzilla minus one” and “ Kungfu Hustle “… those will make my best days in a while
I always laugh at the pepper grinder bit. It's one of my favorite bits from the series.
“He croaked” 🐸
The one thing I’m shocked the sequels never touched on is the witch that cursed Fiona. I really expected her to come back as a future villain.
Wasn’t ‘the witch’ the godmother? It was her plan on how to make Charming the king
Well there’s gonna be a Shrek 5
@@bandlover341Honestly, if not for how great the new puss in boots was, I would say I kinda don't want it.
shrek 4 was a REALLY good wrap up, so I'm not sure if 5 can leave it at a note that is even half as satisfying.
I love Eric being so conflicted watching thr fairy godmother. Like its like going to another earth with an evil version of his mom. Like you look like her, but you dont feel like her
"LOOK OUT SHREK, HE'S GOT A PIECE!!!" 💚 💜
Happy 20th Anniversary to one of the greatest DreamWorks movies ever! IT'S SUPER AWESOME!!!!!
And Jennifer Saunders NAILED IT singing Holding Out For A Hero, and the whole sequence is still one of the greatest in animation history!!
This brought back the memories of playing Shrek 2 at summer camp 😂. The potion stealing scene and the finale 😭
Finally The Best SHREK Movie is here
This is certainly a film I appreciate much more as an adult for all the gags that went over my head in '04.
Also had another phenomenal dvd extra in the original release too, with Far Far Away Idol w/Simon Cowell as the judge
Puss in Boots is a great additional to the cast
It’s great how a simple zoom in made Eric’s look at 11:25 so much funnier😂
its really cool to me how explicit they make it that fionas dad jumped in front of the spell for shrek, because fiona was completely out of harms way
Man shrek 2 is just non stop jokes hit after hit after hit. Its by far the best. I like them all. Probably my order is 2413 but 3 isnt terrible. Ive never seen any of the puss in boots movies. I heard the most recent one is really good. Maybe I should hit those up this weekend.
41:21 David Bowie did perform in this version of Changes :) he’s just not super audible in the film but in the soundtrack he’s perfectly audible
From what I heard, it was originally just a cover, but Bowie heard it and liked it so much he wanted to do a duet.
The part where Mongo tells Gingie, "Be good!" is from a mini-series that came out around the time of this, called "Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story". You learn the giant that Jack supposedly kills had a son, and he actually slips, and the son catches the father. Right before the Giant Father falls to his death, he tells his son to be good (become the friendly giant) in the same slow, monotone that Mongo does.
This is inarguably the best sequel ever made. The internet and society decided this. No sequel ever tops this film.
Finally, Blind Wave reacts to Peak Fiction.
The I Need A Hero sequence will forever be the best sequence in cinema
Shrek 2 not only my favorite film in the franchise but it’s easily one of the greatest animated/Sequels of all time. Also it introduce my favorite character in the whole franchise aka Puss in Boots.
Between this and Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight I’d say it’s the best sequel to a movie ever. Also has the best cover of ‘I need a hero’.
One of the greatest films ever made. Genuinely.
Not him screaming “DON’T EAT IT!” at Shrek before he growls at the dog! 😂😂😂
In the Puss and Boots fairy tale, the cat kills and ogre, so having him being hired to assassinate Shrek was so clever.
41:15 fun fact, when I was in college one of the producers for this soundtrack gave a guest lecture and explained that David Bowie only agreed to have this song used as long as he was able to record a new version with the female artist. So it is actually him, just a remix with new vocals. Pretty cool.
25:30 ALL RISE FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
Shrek 2 is legit one of the funniest animated movies ever, it threads the line of being for kids.
So many Friday nights in fall 2004 after this came out on DVD, we’d come home from school and watch until Friday night pizza arrived. ❤
It's never stated, but a lot of people think it was Fairy Godmother who cursed Fiona in the first place. She was the one who 'advised' Harold to lock her up in a tower and planned for Charming to kiss her and break the curse.
I think it's mostly a fan theory, I don't know if it's been confirmed any, but a popular theory is that The Fairy God Mother was likely the one who cursed Fiona. Which when you think in that context, she may be the very reason all the major fairy tales exist, she basically made her racket by basically false staging events to work out into being the fairy tales we expect.
Along with Gremlins (my favorite movie of all time/highly recommend watching it if you haven't already), this is one of the movies from my childhood that I've seen the most in my life. As well as the first SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the live-action Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Gremlins 2 (also deserves a watch), Jim Carrey's Grinch, and Over the Hedge. 💚
Oh i love Shrek 2! I can’t decide if I prefer Shrek 1 or Shrek 2, either way I really love them and i really love listening to I Need a Hero by Jennifer Saunders, it’s so iconic!! I remember on dvd i use to play Far Far Away idol, that was fun also. Oh also the Uk version of the film as different actors (for example, the Ugly step sister is voiced by Jonathan Ross and the Red Carpet Announcer is voiced by Kate Thornton) some of the dialogue is altered too.
34:05 - That is actually only the most obvious of the clues that Harold is the Frog Prince. If you look around his bedroom, there is a clear Lilypad motif, and when the queen is talking about their courtship, she talks about their romantic walks _by the pond._
The fact that none of y’all mentioned the Queen Julie Andrews is criminal (all jokes aside, it was a delight to watch you guys enjoy this)
This is probably one of the few sequals that is just as good if not better than the first.
33:05 the old crusade injury joke is also probably a reference to Monty Python and the holy Grail because, ya know, the crusades
And John Cleese who played the King is a member of Monty Python
I've always wondered if the people who worked on this movie knew that they were in the process of creating not just one of the greatest sequels of all time. But one of the greatest animated movies of all time with an incredible finale of I Need A Hero.
"Theyll write your name on the bathroom wall" is a crazy ass line for a kids movie and i love it 😂😂
Shrek 2 is one of the best sequels to a franchise ever made. It was the biggest box office film of 2004. DreamWorks had struck gold with this. Easily one of the greatest and funniest animated movies of all time!.
Eric’s face at the donkey/dragon baby reveal was perfect 😂
The real question is if Fiona transformed when Shrek took the potion what happened to Dragon during that time….
someone above said that in one of interviews authors said that it`s supposed to be giant fire breathing pink pegasus)
the amount of memes comparing charming and jamie lannister are amazing.
I remember around when season 2 of Game Of Thrones aired everyone posted out that Jaime Lannister looked exactly like Prince Charming from Shrek 2. Clearly cutting that pretty boy hair style is what turned him good.🤣🤣🤣🤣
The union bit is the most underrated joke in the whole movie
When my kids were little, we always did the Are we there yet skit on car trips. That scene always brings a smile to my face. Eric, after the ending when the king turns into a frog, did you connect to the tavern scene where the girl frog asks him if they have met before?
Finally I've been waiting for u guys to react to this I already know it's going to be good
THE BEST SEQUEL IN ALL OF CINEMA!!!
The white bronco easter egg gets me to this day 😂
13:06
donkey: did I miss
Shrek: no you got them
that kills me every reaction 😂
it has finally been long enough to be forgotten. So many reactors have mentioned when Charming first reveals his hair how he is Jaime Lannister, but that connection is gone.
If only there were a way to show Eric the Far Far Away idol form the special features
