Disc Brake Rubbing | Stopping Brake Noise with no Specialty Tools
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- One constant of big box bikes, especially off the shelf bikes, is that the disc brakes often rub when not in use. This is often due to either a misaligned brake caliper, or equally as often in my experience - this is due to the brake rotor being warped. Big Box Bikes don't usually have much padding inside the box and shipping can do a number on parts like brake rotors...and that's assuming they weren't put in the box already warped.
In this video I discuss ways to check for proper brake alignment and also how I address a warped rotor. At least enough to reduce or eliminate the rubbing sound - and without the need for specialty tools. I found a way to use my fingers to accomplish roughly the same goal.
Note that this video was filmed to show the concept, not as an actual truing of the complete brake rotor. While filming I am limited in what I can see and do while on camera.

I've been a bike mechanic for like 3 years but still watch these vids just in case I don't know any of the ways
LOVED LOVED LOVED this tutorial!!!! You are a natural, and one of the easiest to follow tutorials I’ve seen. The close up shots stayed in focus the entire time, and I could actually SEE everything you did. Awesome! More please 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Had to do the same thing with my Nishiki Colorado. But that was over a year ago and it is still working fine with no such noise.
Thanks KevCentral!! I just bought a Mongoose Ardor x1 and I was having the issue of both rotors rubbing against one of the brake pads along with the front brake rotor being warped. With the help of this video I was able to fix the issue both front and back! Great video!!
Yay...
warped rotors!
The joys of disk brakes
Yay...
bike actually stops!
The joys of disk brakes
Still better than the rim brake calipers being uneven and having to adjust a lot.
@@doriankelly101you just don't know how to adjust rim brakes
Funny that you uploaded this today, I just finished cleaning and realigning my brakes.
Great video! Thank you for the simple fixes and for all your amazing bicycle reviews! I'd love to see more simple repair videos like with adjusting shifting.
Dude you are the best. I used some home pliers and tools the sort of resemble the park tool rotor truer but this worked the best. Bought my wife the Schwinn Al comp based on your reviews and advice. I love to tinker and your videos give me the confidence to pursue it.
Just bought a Mongoose Mack mountain bike from Wal-Mart because it has front and back disc brakes, and I've never had disc before. Everything was aligned quite well out of the box...all I had to do was adjust the cable a little tighter.
They work well, and I like them. I am still keeping in mind that rim brakes have served us extremely well for many decades. I'm not jumping on the "rim brakes are worthless antiques" bandwagon. But the discs are fine, and the bike is a sweet ride. That was a well-spent $198
Congrats on the new bike.
Thank you so much for this! When I got my bike, the front disc’s always rub. I aligned the calibers, but then when I removed the wheel from the bike for transportation, and when I put it back, the disc always seemed to rub on the right side of the pad. I came to a conclusion that the disc was bent and I had to use this method to fix it. It actually worked! I removed the wheel a couple times and tightened it as I normally would, and checked if it still rubbed. It did not. Thank you for this easy fix! I was thinking about going back to the bike shop to make them do it, but I had to pay on something that took 5 minutes to fix! Thanks again!
If you have one around, a crescent wrench is also does an acceptable job bending rotors into place.
Kev you're amazing keep up the work!
Simple and yet informative tutorial. Thanks👍
This helped me sort out my squeaky front disc from a bike straight off the shop shelf! Thank you!
Looks like we have same bike stand!! Enjoyed the video . Keep them coming.
I'm warming up to disc brakes. They're trickling down now to where even someone like me has a bike with them. They make slightly warped wheels not as bad of an issue, verses rim brakes where even slight warping becomes a pain.
Very nice how-to video. Bookmarking this for reference.
I love it - a week late as I just upgraded to get rid of that noise, but I will remember this for the next time.
Thanks for this helpful tip, Kev.
just breathing on those rotors can throw em out of wack.
Just bought a bike (Cannondale Habit 2).
The day after I Went back to get more psi in my shock, the mechanic noticed a little warp in the rotor 😆 Like WTF?
And I thought I got a lemon...guess I shouldn’t worry... thanks for the comment😉
@@AndreKatov they're lemon rotors
Warped rotors can be caused by the caliper being misaligned and then the pads being too wide open to compensate for rub. If you have some warp then backing the pad up to quiet it can cause you to mess up the whole disc when you use the brake, and then need to painstakingly readjust or replace the rotor.
My process is this:
1. Align the caliper
2. examine and adjust so there's no warp-wobble in the rotor. it does not have to be straight when looking thru the caliper, just not wobbling visibly. A light behind it helps
3. Now the spacing is likely too wide, so it needs to be checked. Loosen the brake on the frame again, insert a piece of card between the static pad and the rotor, and move the pad til it gently squeezes the card between it and the rotor, preferably as far as it will go.
4. Put a piece of card between the movable pad and the rotor, then adjust the barrel adjusters til the movable pad presses against the card.
5. Squeeze the brake lever, and tighten the brake down. Let go of it and remove the pieces of card.
The brake should be well-aligned and have minimal gap. If you want more pull on the lever before full braking, wind the barrel adjusters back in a bit to taste.
Shimming during adjustment always gets you excellent consistency!!!😁👍🏻
I found your video very helpful - Thank you.!
Thanks Kev....love it!!!
You're video was great very helpful was able to fix my noise on my disc breaks thanks!
Thanks, this tip fixed both front and back disc break rub!. Handy to do it with a kitchen towel folded to take away the sharp edges pushed against your fingers
Keep the “low tech” fixes coming! I can’t afford to buy all the fancy “Blue” tools.
Amen
Whoa, this notification popped up right when I was watching the park tool video on this.
Just swapped my rotors and was trying to find a trick to get the calipers aligned fast and easy.
Exactly what I was looking for
You helped me fix my new bike!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're the best thanks for the tips
Excellent video. Not only is this practical for the average Joe bike mechanic, it's also helpful if out on a trail. Less the gloves.
Just picked up a Schwinn Taff and it had this problem. Fixed it in 10 minutes, thanks to this video! Much appreciated! I'd subscribe again if I could, but already am! :)
Thanks man, first method worked :))
I know it's a big box Schwinn...but i really liked those Schwinn logo stamped rotors.
I got very loud noise and vibration, especially worst noise during down hills, when I press on rear brake on my new ebike. Does this procedure work ? What if it is the caliper ?
This is pretty cool. Thank you. I had one bike that had the adjustment wheel to center the the pads to the rotor. The caliper had alot more travel and I miss that. A minor warp wasn't a problem at all but it sucked because Everytime I took my wheel off, I had to adjust that wheel for some reason. It was a mongoose and it was just before the XR line of bikes came out. I didn't have the bike very long because a friend of mine ended up with it and put my car in his name when I was over the road semi driving and we were roommate's. It was a great bike but I don't know where it ended up and I couldn't press charges for anything besides the car and it would have his kids that would have to suffer for that because he was the one that worked. I really wanted to see how good that bike was and I don't even know what it was called. I got it from a bike seller/garage bike shop, so I have no idea if it was a higher price department store bike or if it was a lower price bike shop bike. My Lectric is rubbing and this is my first time dealing with disc brakes without that wheel and I noticed that they don't have as much tolerance for rotor warp. Mine is just touching in 1 spot. I asked online and they said to buy new rotors and your answer to the problem is free and easy. Lol. I appreciate this.
Thanks helped me out a lot
Great advice, I fell if you can achieve the fix or repair of the issue, without special tools, some times simple advice is the best advice, my breaks on my ebike started doing that earlier, I notice the break caliper is out of alignment, the rotor is towards the outside, should be good after adjustment, like I said, great advice for solving an annoying problem
great video. good advice!
Nice DIY video
Heck yeah!! Great help
Hey thank you. Solved my problem.
Great video.
Sir my mtb with mezzano t40 21 speed gears microshift. Was on defaul 1*1 gears. I shifted. But display on shifter says 7 but chain on 6th rear. I have not been able to ride out of fear if chain cuts. ( Just riding my bike in my backyards) should I try pushing shifter to try moving from 7 to lower one?
Thanks, i can use all the help I can get!
I have the same bike that you used in the video and was wondering what RockShock fork model it was?
Thanks. Great video
any chance we could see some bikes from Target? ive noticed they have completely gone to tourney shifting at the low end
Good job
I just upgraded to disc and I’m glad I have this problem now no more rim brakes rubbing after jumps
Plan right now is to replace the seat, grips, and shifters on my bike. Even if I can't ride it on the road it might be useful on a (VERY LIGHT) trail or something. Plus gets me out of the rut I'm in of just hanging around the house.
You master bike rider now? How has it been going?
@@jorgeo1492 riding on field grass kinda sucks, but slowly hoping to get myself in some kind of shape before spring.
You have no idea how perfect the timing of this vid release is. Is Kev God?
Oliver’s Sends That’s what I said!!
Nice one
Do you know how to fix a loose brake lever on my hydraulic brake levers
Once you straighten out the rotor and align the caliper, you can then adjust the gap between the pads and the rotor. With mechanical calipers, just adjust the barrel nut. On hydraulic brakes, it is slightly trickier / riskier. That might be a good subject for your next videos!
Crazy 8s Drums Most modern hydraulic brakes have self adjusting mechanisms.
@@MaplePanda04 Not all of them do and we are talking about Big Box and low end bikes. The cheap hydraulic brakes don't always self-adjust. You need to take the wheel off and very carefully squeeze the brake lever to move the caliper / pads just slightly closer together... If you do too much, the pistons can pop out and will need the caliper to be reworked.
@@MaplePanda04 It is not such an easy task, which is why I recommended it to Kev to feature as a video.
I have hydraulic brakes on my Talon 3., what’s tricky about it?
Crazy 8s Drums sounds like sram codes. Pads are too far from the rotor and feel spongy. Have to pull the pads out, push the pistons out a bit, put the pads back in, then bleed it. Then they feel solid. This is new out of the box brakes.
How about disc brake squealing when modulation? Pads? Thanks!
Thanks Kev🙏
Great video ☆☆☆☆☆
is it normal to have a bent rotor that you just bought and installed? I haven't used the bike yet and I have this problem. How do I know for sure it's the rotor and not the wheel that is out of true? I've just been trying to true the wheel but it doesn't add up
Thanks for the vids
Thanks for watching
You are definitely not crazy, I have done this several times when out riding, but I also have truing stand from Parktool, and the rotor truing add on, so I true the rotor in the stand, and use adjustable pliers, this makes it easy.
Done this b4 and works great
If it looks weird and it works, it ain't weird.
My brakes on my and my girlfriends aventure.2 ebike do the shing shing brake rubbing sound but only at exactly 16 and 17 mph. I can't imagine how that's possible.
Thank you teacher.
It's here!
THANK YOU !
YES!!! Thank you
Thx you so much
can you review the schwinn s29 please?
Thanks for this vid I will try out your tactics, my brakes always scrape and it’s embarrassing when I bike to school or with people I know
How do you tell if the rotor is warped or the rim is bent?
Great video Kevin!!! Perfect timing as well!! Took my new 2020 Talon 3 out for a 15 mile ride today, and I hear my front rotor rubbing just a tick. This video came at just the right time.
I’m sure the shop I bought it from will be happy to tweak it for me, but I’m gonna do it myself. Need another decal for this bike, you still have any cassette ones left?
I only have the diecut currently.
That’s fine
I recently messed up the setup on my derailleur. Both rear and front. Now it won't shift properly.
Had to do this first thing on my big box Mongoose. Next bike I got was a a used bike with rub brakes. Not convinced that this new tech is so superior after all.
This is funny. I received today the ParkTool tool to true the rotor. I did it one time with my hand and it was faster than the tool ha.
Now the tool is sturdy and easier but still need to learn how to use it properly.
Covers less area than the fingers.
thnx a lot.
u. r awesome
You are amazing
My 2016 GT Nomad has Tektro hydraulics and I am just ready to change the pads out of normal maintenance. The rotors are still true and only lightly warn. I have the Park tool but have not had to use it. I am a total believer in disc brakes.
I agree with some of the people I think it would be a great video to go over the entire brake pad adjustment on disc brakes mechanical that is because if you're not familiar with them it can be a mystery I myself know what I'm doing but I remember how it was before I had the info and it was frustrating
Kev central I have an Ancheers ebike. Do you have a list of upgrades to make it better.
I left it as-is and didn’t have any issues.
Hey Kev, are you able to do a video on removing a cog without that fancy vice grip that most people use?
Christian Peters You will need a chain of some sort to wrap around the cassette to immobilize it. Otherwise the cassette will just spin when you try to remove it.
That's a nice "Technique" to know!
Is that the Schwinn aluminum comp? Can you do a video covering how to adjust the front derailleur so it shifts correctly? I recently got an aluminum comp from walmart but the front derailleur on this bike won't shift correctly no matter how I adjust it(I've already watched the typical youtube tutorial on FD adjustment btw).
I cannot get all the gears in the front chainring to shift correctly. Fixing one problem always seems to introduce another. In my case shifting 1->2 (smaller inner to middle ring) fails to make the shift(a lot of chainrub in the process). But if I tighten the shift cable, it'll make the shift but then the cable becomes too tight going from 2->3 and downshift fails or it goes straight to 1 skipping over 2. If I loosen the cable tension enough so it can downshift 3->2 again, well the upshift 1->2 problem reappears.
Been at it for 2 weeks trying to fix it. Also I've returned 2 aluminum comps to walmart for an exchange because of the FD shift problem. I'm on my third aluminum comp now that still exhibits this problem. I'm starting to think it's a component issue. The only thing I haven't checked is the bottom bracket and the distance between the chainring and the frame.
Did you ever experience those problems on your aluminum comp? If so how did you fix it? This problem is driving me mad so frustrating.
The front derailleur is already off it, but those are finicky.
Keep up with maintenance videos!
Is that the same bike shown for front forks and rear wheel? I.e. rockshox forks at the front but a freewheel at the back and solid axle. Unless its a solid axle but a 7 speed cassette. Normally you get a solid axle to try and strengthen a freewheel at the rear. Strangely configured bike if it is.
Yes. Upgrades
For bent rotos, get a Knipex 8603125 or similar. Handy for those large hex-cap nuts, too, and probably obsolete most collections of wrenches.
I did the same. It could be axle alightment. Still its fun and easy video.
You should do a review on one of the Diamondback Atroz bikes compared to the XR pro! It would be a great comparison!
Hey kev could you make a video on how to change out the stupid 3x on most walmart/ big box store bikes to a 1x
Yeap
Way to go Rj, I mean Kev ;))
Ha!
@Aditya Wardhana Who hurt you?
just a warning to new bike mechanics, keep your hands away from the rotors while they are spinning. You can easily lose a finger tip.
You should review the Huffy Scout 26 inch 👍
I would like to see a you prepare a video of your top 10 favourite bikes to ride kev. 😅

Nice
Wonder if I could buy better rotors or am I just stuck with what it came with?
160mm 6-bolt rotors are standard, do better quality is always an option. I’ve found Shimano rotors to be superior to genetics and Tektro.
What bike has cable disc brakes and a rock shox fork?
Upgraded fork.

Bend the disc with a adjustable spanner. Worked for me
Iv just bougt a marlin 4 2022 yesterday and the breaks are making like a rubbing grinding noise wen u pull the break and arnt slowing you down very good do u think they just need worn in or should i complain to the shop
Definitely a setup issue. They shop should fix that. Part of the high price of bike shop bikes is good setup, so don’t settle for anything less
