Screwing people over for money is greedy. Wanting to have everything for yourself is greedy. Mate, you use Intel and talk about greed. Intel have been a greedy bunch for years.
Wanting to experiment with PC components and trying to really get into the whole matter, doing research, testing stuff and simply trying to get more performance out of your CPU is not greedy. Your definition of greed is wrong. An overclocked CPU will also last "for years". Your 8700K does not fall apart after 2 years just because you overclocked it to 5GHz. I mean, if you want to keep your CPU for like 10 years you might have a point (never had any PC that long), but I don't know any data on the long-term effects of overclocking.

Overclocking is worth it if you have a youtube channel where you can make a video about it and earn money.

@@GifCoDigital Calm down dude. You have to be honest it would be nice if Intel just unlocked all multipliers on everything more powerful than a Pentium. AMD locked down processors in the past but isn't anymore on their RYZEN SKU which is the most relevant. They are gaining market share and they are getting a good image among consumers. It would be a nice move if Intel did the same on their "Core" SKU. It would make Intel a better value oriented brand and overclocking more interesting. Because overclocking would be more interesting there would be more UA-cam video's about overclocking lower SKU Intel which raises product awareness which would most likely boost sales. The problem with Intel however is that consumers would likely buy a lower SKU CPU and there won't be higher sales numbers because they still have troubles with their 14nm shortage. But who knows if once their production shortage has been resolved Intel may change their ways. AMD should still be commended for unlocking most of their processors.

Well it’s made by Id software. Checkout their history, They’re behind quake, wolf and made fps into a genre.
Ah another very balanced opinion. Winning hearts of both sides. Knowing basic (or casual) OC can actually help sometimes. I was going nuts with my 3900X for days. I did not want to get into OCing it because I felt it is just not worth it. But just by going the casual OC way I was able to get a way way better multi core performance on the chip with the same temps I got on stock. I have made a whole video on this actually. It is really beautiful what even a basic knowledge can do. I am not into crazy OC craze but even the basic one helped me a lot. So yeah, OC doesn't mean now that it just about getting more clocks on it. Right on, on at least the ryzen 3000 series, OC means getting same performance on multicore with same temps as stock. :)
most cpus nowadays are hotter on stock settings.

Id like to see what damage to a CPU looks like after overclocking.
As long as your voltage and temps aren't too high, you'll be fine.
If you arent going for extreme overclock then you dont need to worry too much If you are able to maintain your cpu cool, your cpu will becouse obsolete before you need to worry about any issues with it. Tho heat stress is something to worry about, If it heats up fast and cools down fast you can kill any electrical component very fast, so spending in a better cooler and optimizing the fan curve in a way that It maintains stability in your cpu temperature, dropping as slow as possible while not being hot when under Full load is essential If you try to overclock, be that your cpu or gpu

You are an adult now, and so you can make absumptions on topics you know nothing about XD.
If you don't plan on trying to push all you can get out of your cpu and you just want some extra performance, you can OC your cpu with a quick google seach and 5 -10 mins, and get way more than a 2% performance bump.
Or.... just flip the sync all cores switch in the bios for Intel CPUs.... wich takes less than 5 mins.
Except with the new Ryzen AMD cpus, those require to touch quite a bit of things, because they are perform pretty much as good as they can out of the box.
Some of us so this for fun because we enjoy tinkering with tech.
Nothing to do with being an "adult".
If it was only 2%, yeah, I wouldn't bother.
Also, I've been in this a long time.

@@joefmagat5586 fair, but so am I.
I find time for hobbies so I don't resent that which consumes my time.
I dunno. From 4.3GHz to 4.8Ghz and using less power which makes it more silient is quite an upgrade.
Back in 1989, I bought my first PC. A 386 DX with 4mb ram and a 100Meg HDD, operating at 25 mHz. I was able to replace the oscillator with a 32 mHz one. That's an improvement of around 33%. The entire PC only gained a mere 10% of performance improvement.
It really depends on what CPU/GPU you have. I've tried overclocking a Ryzen 2 to no avail. I barely budges by a couple hundred hertz. Now with my trusty 5820k I was able to push 1GHz across the board at virtually no cost, literally .1v and 10-20C higher and that's it. It's of note that overclocking has been getting way tougher across the board recently...
My first Techquickie with no views. I feel honored.
I don't like overclocking, because I always got obsessed with it. I'd rather enjoy my PC, and not be paranoid about it running at the best possible clock speeds.
@KarlKlaus vonS Overclocking is basicly a mindset thing. If you need the extra performance you can get a half decent oc by using auto tuning utilitys in your mb, if you don't need it but still think about it, you're a likely tinkerer and enjoy fixing it if you "break" it
@KarlKlaus vonS True, but note that the more you do video encoding the more an oc worth it, but at the same time, as soon as something depends on your work, e. g. your income, stability gains value too. For some workloads cache oc or memory oc can be worth it too.
@KarlKlaus vonS True, allways just want to call a number and get shit done ^^
@KarlKlaus vonS Just a question from a noob. If you drop the voltage, isn't performance lost in the end ?
some commenters have it completely wrong about our views at intel on overclocking, see we believe that any sort of realistic processor tests should have the intel processors overclocked on ln2, but that the AMD processors should be running with no heatsink and below JEDEC specification memory while our CPUs use XMP on binned Samsung b-dies, as we think this provides the best processor comparison. It is, however, important to note that while realistic performance benchmarks should use overclocked processors, the most realistic way to measure power draw and TDP is at idle.
I have a Ryzen 5 1500x. It's base is 3.5 and it's boost is 3.8. I run it overclocked at 3.92Ghz. It makes a big difference in gaming for me as it would otherwise bottleneck my system. Eventually I'll try my hand with a better cpu but I'm trying to wait for a bit to let Ryzen 3000 drivers mature.

Really noticeable in Battlefield V in 64 player maps at 1440p 144hz. Tons of physics, high resolution, high refresh rate, highly optimized for multi threaded computing in dx12. I run ultra settings (ray tracing off) for a nominal 144fps most of the time dropping into 120s during heavy battles, which is actually a CPU bottleneck with all of the physics explosions, GPU rarely exceeds 90% usage.
I somehow found it a lot easier to do and understand back when you had to move around jumpers on the motherboard to OC.
After years having my CPU overclocked over 600 MHz, I realized it really wasn't worth it after I had to reset my BIOS, went to default settings and realized I did not observe any difference in my computer's performance. I also noticed a significant drop in the power reading off my UPS. I was burning up all that extra power for nothing. I now have it overclocked around 300 MHz, which small increase in power usage. Sure my file compression, file checksum, and video encoding operations will run a little bit longer (about 10%), most times I just set them to run in the background while I work on other things. Having them complete faster doesn't benefit me. Games perform the same.
it depends on the CPU.
back in the 2000's I had an AMD 2400+ (dual core 3g) overclocked to 4g stable on a full loop which included mobo chipsets. I ran that system 24/7 for close to 8 years and it ran every game I threw at it on high or better. I only upgraded because after 8 yrs the mobo failed, and I figured it was time.
Im not overclocking now because I do a lot less gaming than I did back then.
4:30 just wanted to say, that the performance boost is not "for free" - a lot of times the CPU suddenly draws more energy than before the overclock :)
I mean...I've got a 6700k running at 4.7ghz. So to me a sustained clock speed increase of 17.5% over the base clock is definitely worth it! And as Linus says, it is easy. It took changing, what, like 2 settings in the bios to hit this speed?
Seems silly not to go for that tbh

A good option actually is to just lower the graphics settings a bit for getting that FPS increase you want. It doesn't make that much of a difference at all in the end for the texture quality.
Also, your CPU would last much longer instead of killing it's durability with overclocking. So it's basically useless. But that is just me, you can have your own opinions.

Intel non K CPU : Can't overclock
Intel : Sponsors video about overclocking
bclk is also an overclock
@@aNiTF3 Yes it is, however it has gigantic drawbacks like nvme ssd's not booting. It's also more a tool to get a less than 100MHz advantage out of your overclock where for example 5.1GHz isn't stable but 5.05GHz is stable.
I've never met anyone who couldn't afford a K series Intel proc. So I've never heard of someone not being able to OC 😕
Btw your photo is actually Katy Perry from "Roar"
I OC just to see how much my cpu can do, after that I revert everthing back to stock because it hurts my eyes to see 200w consumption from the wall watching youtube vs 110w stock.
Also it makes my room hotter which means I have to crank up the cooler which raises my electricity bill.
"Anything north of 1ghz is going to be a bit of a challenge..." My very first overclock was with my 9900K, and I added 1.4ghz to the overclock to make it 5ghz stable all cores, at 1.27v. It was not even difficult.
"Is overclocking Worth it?"
Linus : *Well yes but actually No*
Yes, if you intend to upgrade in no more than (10 - x)/ years, considering x is the amout of years since you use the CPU you want to overclock.
If you want your CPU to have a long life, than don't do if.
Of course it also depends on how much you use the PC with that CPU. If you game a lot, then be careful. Everything has a risk.
I still remember overclocking the 1.6A GHz Pentium to 2.4-2.8GHz. Those were the days...
I have an i5-6500 overclocked from 3200Mhz to 4500Mhz
Those were the days of overlapping products and all gains came directly from clock speed.
Back then they'd release a CPU on a new process and ramp up the clock speeds for years before changing anything up. Today they essentially make one line of CPUs and fill in the middle and low range later on during the year as capacity increases.
The baseline Northwood was 2GHz, the big dog was 2.4GHz and the value was 1.6GHz with the previous generation stopping around 2.2GHz.
Today the highest bin is released roughly the same time as the mid and low end and there aren't any real improvements coming until the next generation.

I have a couple cheap r7 260x that I love to mess around with but my more expensive gpu’s I don’t mess with. Honestly when you are paying high money you don’t want to risk the life span but if you got older cheaper hardware that isn’t going to kill your wallet then go for it. Can be really fun and teach you about gpu hardware/software. If you want a safe OC for an expensive gpu just get one that is overclocked by the manufacturer. Will have a nice little OC and won’t kill your stuff

Ah yes, fire
It’s like a car engine bro. Can’t have a cold engine, it won’t perform well. So you gotta get that PC nice n hot to the electricity flowing nicely
@@henryorsomething it's especially nice when it makes the monitor have special effects
I overclocked my cpu and the result was that every burned CD or DVD contained some data errors. All DVDs and CDs were burned correctly after restoring original cpu frequency. I don't overclock since then.
Overclocking was worth it when I could just take a 3.8 GHz max boost clock CPU, change the multiplier to make it go to 4.6 GHz all core boost, and not have to do anything else (i.e. the 2600K). Now the performance gains just aren't there anymore, which I'm fine with. I'd rather have a product that's not purposefully leaving performance on the table just for the sake of product segmentation, and will instead run as well as it'll ever run right out of the box.

You have to overclock the RGB first, that way the cpu can sync with it... duhhhh
It was a rainy night in Vancouver's lower East side. A man in an LTT hoodie was walking towards me. His face was cloaked under his baggy hood as his lanky gate continued toward me. As he became closer and closer, I began to see a face appear with each passing streetlight. My knees trembled as I surmised who this might be. It was. OMG. As he passed on my left he whispered, "Don't forget to hit the fucking bell icon, you shit stain". That was the first time I met Linus.
mind that 1ghz OC is about 25% free performance. sure not everyone have won the silicon lottery with 1ghz OC, but even 800mhz which skylake (or something-lake) is usually capable of is a good 20% bump than stock.
I was thinking of EXACTLY this question. Thank you so much for the content!
AMD Ryzens: * overclockable *
Linus [ *sponsored by Intel* ]: "Overclocking is not worth it"
OCed my i7-2700k to 4.5 GHz on all cores back in the days - 1 GHz over base-clock and 600 MHz over turbo-boost clock. It was running stable ever since and is still running as my secondary PC. This made be stick to this setup for 6 years until I switched to a i7-8700k back in January 18. Again, OCed to 4.6 GHz this time on all cores (delidded + liquid metal mod). Unfortunately, I lost the silicon lottery this time, because I know, these kind of CPUs can go as high as 5 GHz. Anyway, I'm still happy and hope, this CPU will stay with me at least 4 more years (if not even more) - Thanks to OC!
I don't get it, the i7 8700k can already turbo to 4.7 GHz.
I overclock and manually set voltage for stability and thermals. Less game crashes than default bios settings.
Intel: no overclock for you. Locked!

@@kot3405 well true
i mean, a320 still bottlenecks it because vrms and stuff
Well I would say increasing performance can be classified in some categories:
1) Fine tunning the system: This is making sure the OS, drivers and programs are performing at their best capacity and there is no software decreasing the performance.
2) Increasing performance stability: It could be decreasing temperature so that system won't reduce the performance, it could be changing system parameters to decrease latency or fix lags.
3) Actual overclocking: Increasing the Clocks of the components beyond the stock levels, this will increase the overall performance of the system. If temperatures or voltages are too high the components will lose life spam.
1 and 2 are always recommended, 3 its more of personal preference, in my case I usually do small overclocks that I know won't hurt components.
I have a ryzen 2700x and I tried OC'ing it as it said that the max boost would be around 4.2 GHz with a base clock of 3.7 GHz. Little did I know that you don't need to OC that CPU as it makes it unstable and even at 4 GHz OC, I still keep getting overheating problems even with a good AIO cooler. Little did I know that when checking my core temps without the overclock, some of the cores literally boost up to 4.2 GHz depending on the load and adapt itself depending on the load without any issues whatsoever even at high loads.
You guys did this video now has me asking, is undervolting worth it?
Depends what it is. In 1 game i go from 124 FPS to 148 FPS with a Vega 64 from only undervolting and increasing the power slider to max. It then goes to 171 FPS after increasing the memory frequency, only. No GPU frequency increasing at all. Less heat, noise and power used is often the case with undervolting. Many other graphics cards and CPU's decrease performance with undervolting. Undervolting performance is largely related to architecture types such as Vega.
Yes but, just like overclocking, If you push it too much the system will be very unstable, I've seen some people posting that it's better to lower the power target, rather than the voltage, you get the same benefits from undervolting while maintaining stability.
Lower temps and equal performance, what's not to love?
Yes it is
I mean personally I think the best idea is overclocking but with stock voltage, unless of course you have problems with temps
While Desktop users seeking overclocking here, laptop users are searching undervolting and underclocking somewhere else.
