  • This week, we finally get the front end reassembled on the Patina Rat Rod truck. Now that everything is cleaned and has a fresh rattle can refresh, it can be bolted together with a ton of new parts.
    I got the shock relocation kit and drop coils from Brother's Trucks.

    I grew up and became an apprentice tech when only new parts came in boxes from the dealer. Rebuilding calipers was part of the front brake job. Once apart, you knew why because it's the bottom of the brake system bucket and all carbon, dirt collected here. We used "Flex Stones" still sold today but finish the bottom of the pistons bore with Scotch Brite and had brake assembly lube but you can never go wrong with DOT brake fluid. Flushing the system should be done prior to disassembly to clean out contaminated fluid. It absorbs moisture from the air, thus the rubber expansion seal under the cap. Chrysler products used a "Phenolic based piston" (Note; Phenolic resins where created in the USA by an immigrant engineer in his 7th year of trying in 1908) found to mixed with fiberglass to carbon black gave rise to distributor caps, starter solenoids, telephones, etc., because it was an insulator. Chrysler phenolic pistons where replaced with steel during rebuilding as they would scuff, some say swell, but bind in the caliper. Once the square cut seal was installed & lubricated, install the piston 1/2-3/4 into the bore. This allows the seal to fall over the piston into its groove. We had seal drivers but with metal ring in the boot, a wood dowel, flat tip metal punch could install the seal correctly with practice. Imports had an outer grove that a wire spring would unfold into the seal to hold it. Always use a 6 point socket, wrench or bleeder 90 degree tool to open the screw before starting. Amazing how many tightened the bleeder tight, then more yet which is not needed.
    Great video content and information. DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, retired.

    Nice! I’d like to see the bolt plating process. Building a 85 c10. Thanks for the videos

      I'll get around to making that video after it warms up a bit. Process doesn't come out as good when all the solutions are cold.

      Thanks you! This truck is coming along nicely. The 620 will resume work next month, so videos will follow after the C-10 series is done. I'll tell you this: the 620 rear suspension is gonna be awesome.

    Are those kyb drop shocks? Do you have a part number for those?

    • @tinygaragefab
      @tinygaragefab  2 роки тому +1

      Those are the regular length C-10 shocks. Don't have the part number on hand, but they were easy to find on Rock Auto.

    I did replace the whole front end on my c10 71 , but after one side is sittting one inch lower they told me needs the alignment would that can be the case ?

      I would double check that your coil springs are correctly sitting in the little pockets of the control arm. On mine, I have to do them very carefully and one at a time because they are shorter lowering springs. That would absolutely cause one side to be a different height.

    Are those aftermarket or stock parts

    • @tinygaragefab
      @tinygaragefab  Рік тому +1

      Most of the parts are original. The springs and shock brackets are aftermarket, and the ball joints, tie rods, etc are from Rock Auto.

    Just a recommendation based on what I've seen used by other you tube car rebuilds, they all seem to like QA1 for suspension components

      @tinygaragefab  Рік тому

      The QA1 has it's place, but I think if I do any aftermarket stuff, I'm going to get the Porterbuilt 1" forward arms, set up for airbags.

    What was the part cost?////

    • @tinygaragefab
      @tinygaragefab  2 роки тому

      I haven't really added up the cost of the parts, but the entire front end rebuild was around $500 with the springs and socks included. Most of the work was cleaning the decades of grease and dirt off of it all.
