The Real Reason I'm so 'Productive'

  • Опубліковано 25 лип 2024
  • I hate the question but it's perhaps the one I'm asked the most: how do you manage to be so 'productive'. And here's my formal answer.
There's a lot of privilege that goes into being able to design your life, I've only been able to do so, properly, for the last few months. But there is a HUGE difference in terms of productivity - I don't feel like being productive, that I am productive, I never really think about it - I just do things that I enjoy, and on the outside, they happen to look like work.
As always - everything is to be taken with a pinch of salt. There are times that I hate things that I usually enjoy, that filming is hard and painting is an absolute pain and the last thing I want to do in the world. This is a generalisation over long periods of time - these are things that I generally find easy and fun.
Hope this helps, and always open to thoughts on the matter :)

I'm so glad you also touched upon the privilege of being able to design your life, I feel like not enough people address this in the productivity realm, we are so fortunate that we're actually able to play 😊

Absolutely! It's a huge privilege to talk about productivity in the first place, I think it's so important to acknowledge that

I in no way mean for my words to seem patronizing - but - the thoughts conveyed in this simple Vlog have hit me like a brick! "The opposite of PLAY is DEPRESSION" - and - "It's hard to compete with someone that is having fun" are both simplistically obvious yet profound. Thank you for this - Regards - Steve

Thanks Steve, absolutely not patronising at all! I find the most profound things are the ones that are so obvious that you feel you always knew them but never verbalised them

Good point Elizabeth - I would also like to add that 'Play' should not be defined as what society deems to be play. For example I only realised a few years ago that I do not enjoy going to the beach but every hol I would go to the beach inline with what I felt was Play (as told by society). Conversely, I think something like revision is seen as a chore by society but you can change your mindset to really see it objectively and start seeing it as 'Play' and not what you are told to by society :) P.s I was in the world of business and am now doing GEM in the UK so great following your channel!

Felt the same way from age 18-28 but at 29 burnout hit me like a wall with physiological consequences. Please take care because it’s a delicate balance and the blurring of the lines you’re talking about makes it much much harder to understand your motivations and notice when it becomes unhealthy.
If someone told me about this earlier I wouldn’t have believed them, so I don’t expect anyone to believe me here either. 😅

So reveling, Elisabeth. I speak 6 languages and I never felt like I had to 'work' to acquire them - It has always been pleasure and I could not but to absorb them with joy. My mother seeing me with my first Duden of 120k terms could not at all understand my joy (I bought it myself). Great advice.

This actually makes sense. If your profession is anything that drives you to work, then 12 hour or 20 hours will be like play. But on the other hand if you don't have intrinsic desire to work or you're not mentally or physically fit for it (Medicine or Engineering) , then you will really feel awful/miserable & just wish or wait your work day to end & just go back home.

I like how you mention privilege by design but there’s also privilege by circumstance when it comes to gaining success. I think there’s luck and getting opportunities from good timing, environment, resources, connections, etc. Then again, it’s the hard work can equal play mentality that can be a factor in helping the success be more sustainable which is why I love the points you’ve reiterated in this video, which looks fire by the way, and you’ve got a new subscriber. 😃👍

This video is inspiring. But I personally feel like it should also be addressed that just because your "occupation" and responsibilities are playtime it doesn't mean that they are not frustrating or difficult. As much as the idea may be eye-opening and quite liberating in a weird way, just because your work = your passion does not mean that your work is always fun and you will never be "depressed" from work. I think the fine line between work and play is not necessarily the type of activity you choose to do but really the caliber that you are required to reach once you take your passion on as your occupation. And the amount of stress you put on yourself to reach that level of excellence in a certain field - in any field not just academic - if not dealt with properly can roll into a mountain of depression and that's when you start to become unproductive and that's when play truly becomes work. Just a passing thought...

If we're still talking about the "Play Depression" line, I feel like your job takes up a section of that line. A good job will occasionally slip towards Depression, but will mostly be on the Play side.
No job feels exactly the same every single day.

I didn't know this was a framework and someone had written about it but I definitely implemented in my life. I discovered that if I didn't enjoy the things that I'm doing, I can be successful but I will be miserable and I didn't want a life like that. So, a little late in life, I change careers and I've never been happier and what I do it's always in a state of flow, obviously there are things in my career that I don't enjoy as much but the majority of it, I'm passionate. And that's the mindset I want to have if I'm able to have it.

Thanks Liz! This video helped me realize that if given the choice, I wouldn't be doing my profession in its current form in my freetime.
I work in IT and with a slight modification I could revive the passion that initially got me in the field.
You've helped me to realize that I can get paid to do what I love if I am willing to make the necessary changes.
I'm currently working on an idea for a personal blog. Once I get that up and running, I see what I need to do in my day job that will compliment my strengths and allow me to do what I love!
Maybe I can have my 🍰 and eat it too! 😉

Great video! I feel like sometimes when you start doing what you love, after a while, especially if it became stressful and associated with a lot of expectations, it becomes less fun, and you may not like doing it anymore. So, I don't really know how would you avoid that. I really loved working with kids so pediatrics has always been my passion, but until I did pediatrics rotation, and worked in a toxic environment, I felt like I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Probably a change of environment would help I guess.
