Silat Cimande is famous for its expertise in treating broken bones and sprains. Usually Cimande silat trainers are required to master this treatment method because students often get injured during training. I grew up in southeast Asia, and Silat/Muay Thai was my first window and exposure to combat arts. Fast forward to 2024, I am mostly doing silat/escrima, which I am glad I started years ago, as it is harder to do Muay Thai as a 62-year-old. Thanks for the validation of Silat.

Pencak Silat Cimande style is origin from west Java, Indonesia. Abah Kahir is the inventor of that style about 1169 AC. Sundanese people learn it to defend their selves and as art of life. That's style is the oldest one. Actually it's hard to master it😢

Silat was shown in small quantities in the likes of "Black belt Magazine" and "Kung Fu Magazine" in the late '80s early '90s and always seemed like a fascinating system. It wasn't until Iko Uais in "The Raid" that Silat became more globally displayed and recognised, but I also discovered a unique system of Silat as practiced, taught, and demonstrated by Australian Luke Holloway. The system Luke shows seems direct and effective in the empty hand arena, and his knife boxing is superb.❤😊
The first article on Silat in the USA was in the June 1965 issue of Black Belt. Magazine. There were several articles published throughout the 1970's it didn't just appear in the late 1980's it has a long but though not well known history in the United States.
Its Don Draeger from Black Belt Magazine who bring Silat to the world in early 70's. Several decades before, in Dutch colonial era, Silat is much more shrouded and practised underground (and disguised as an artistic/dance style). As the dutch saw it as a dangerous weapon for local resistence & their guerilla warfare system (as similar as happen in Phillipine with their kali/escrima under spanish colonial rule.)
The most effective concepts are typically not shared with the public. 40+ years under my belt and I had to label it Southeast Asian martial arts in order to enjoy my journey through the world of martial arts. as an indonesian, i would say that keris dagger is more often used for a dark magical ritual by shamans (may they be damned) than a close-combat-poisoning fightings. but occasionally, it also used for a wedding ceremonial, yet also to show someone’s status back then (such a kings, sultans, or known figures)

The video was very interesting and one can clearly see the typical fluidity of motion in your silat guru that only high level practitioners of their respective system typically reach. But after all there are too many aspects that I think would likely not stand the test of a truly aggressive and violent opponent (the goal to intentionally engage in short range fighting with long range weapons, blade blocking behind back, etc.)

I met an interesting Silat player from Portland once , around the time they were filming THE HUNTED , before they took out the Elwa dam . Kujang is from West Java, mainly used by Sundanese people as a weapon. Karambit also originate from West Sumatera by Minang People that inspired from Tiger Nails
I love the graceful but swift silat movements. And i love the keris weapons in the background. FYI most malay families/households throughout the malay archipelago have keris in their homes. Often inherited through the generations. The deadliest are often the smaller ones. Women back then used to wear the smallest keris in their braided/sanggul hair like decorations. Salam from Malaysia.

In sundanese silat of west java, theres a pair counterpart for silat (striking system) for ground system : its called Benjang, a traditional wrestling & grappling art. Much like of the pairs of Boxing-BJJ and Wushu-Shuai Jiao.
In the early 18th century on the island of Java there was a mass movement against Dutch colonialism, by a group of people led by Sunan Kuning. This group had extraordinary silat skills that could destroy armed Dutch soldiers in dozens of bases on the island of Java. This made the Dutch Afraid and finally the Dutch decided to share the area of power with other groups who also had troops equipped with great "silat" skills. and that successfully ended the episode of the sunan kuning movement. After that the Dutch had extraordinary respect for the Sultanate on the island of Java. and chose to share power with them, because the Dutch did not want the previous thing to happen again

Thank you for presenting silat, here tough a bit strange since his system is cimande but learn in east java, so it looks as a mix. Hat off to guru darren, i as indonesian see no wrong in his presentation, just a small miniscule remarks. I really like how he understand the application of suliwa the way he use a triangle system. A bit p.s. Kujang is the exclusive weapon used in west java, not sumatera. Kerambit characteristics are the smaller the deadlier, since almost imposible to disarm or block. Celurit is a gardening tool to hack grass, used as weapon mostly in east java. Golok play really sleek, he understand it is mainly for finesse, just slice and slice no need power on it, hatt off. Might be if he visit indonesia, he can visit jakarta where golok play at its deadliest form, full of tricks in grappling range.

Muay thai is more simple on defending & striking for people to learn, but silat is brutal and more complex to learn because they're fully martial art rather than just self defense like muay thai. You learn catching, striking, grapling, etc. At same time for the efficiency of positioning in self defense. For me muay thai is good for basic to learn self defense mindset. But getting expert you can choose for expanding your martial art mindset with silat. And for me the +poin of silat is catching & striking.

@inside_fighting if I wasn't on the other side of the country I'd like to train with him. I used to train in San Soo. It's an amalgamation of various Chinese styles with some western ideas tossed into the stew. So far in my over 4 decades here in earth the times it's come into play have been very few, with two altercations ending right away from a sweep dropping the guy onto the concrete. The largest benefit was controlling the mind better to a faster motorcycle racer. Being able to meld to the machine was the biggest benefit of martial art training for me. I tend to stay away from trouble as best I can out in the jungle. Thank you for taking the time to show Guru Daren to your audience.
Great stuff. 100% of fights start standing. And that statement of 90% of fights end up on the ground doesn't mean both fighters. Your objective in a street fight or combat situation is for you to not go onto the ground but to knock your opponent onto the ground.
In Indonesia, all fights will end in multiple attackers and often with weapons. you drag down your opponent to the ground fighting means you're a deadman.
Traditional silat and muay bhoram (muay thai as we know) are build us as fighters at battle field back at the day when kingdoms are everywhere at south east asia

Love Silat, have been training SBL under Alvin Guinanao, we focus a lot on ground mobility. Being able to strike and move from the ground and from bizarre positions is quite deceptive, and cool. Additionally how quickly one can adapt the motions to weapons is fascinating.
Silat giving ppl option, like u can block with elbow, parrying, striking to the vital spot etc, more importantly is, being healthy and giving confidence in any situation
Probably the most effective for street applications. It is a fighting system that stayed alive until the 70’s where people were clan fighting and defending their village using these arts. Not many fighting system can say they were still being used irl 50 years ago or less. Very different in concept than sports fighting. Also something clear from the demos even if not openly stated is the notion of multiple attacker is ingrained in the practice, something completely lost in sport like bjj and mma. Great video again !

Something that is effective and safe in a controlled environment or one-on-on situation can become a liability in a crowd. When I worked as a bouncer, a coworker who was training bjj had to evict a drunk guy who was semi-passively resisting. As my coworker felt he was loosing his grip and the guy was about to escape him he reverted to his bjj training and got the guy in a rear naked chock as they fell to the ground, only to realize he was now under the drunk guy holding him in a chock hold with 4 of his friends standing around him. Bad spot to be in. Fortunately other members of the team saw the interaction and arrived on the scene to help him and calm down the situation. My coworker quickly realized how training only bjj, although developing certain useful skills, also developed habits that became liabilities in his work environment. You don’t want to start tooling on the ground in a bar with broken glass all over the floor, or when chairs, tables, and people are falling around.

Silat is still used to kill, today. Yayan Ruhian is actually a silat guru for presidential security force. They still use silat to protect the president other than sidearms. So, you can bet that it is still as deadly as it was, and those people obviously know the secret system.

I like when he was explaining the Keris he mentioned about the maker putting the spiritual intent. This is because another important part of ancient Silat that many actually don't mention is also the 'spiritual' part of art.
It's actually a secret but he exposed it. But that's good to know, silat is meant to hurt and kill the aggressors. Mostly commonly used is South East asia

I grew up in southeast Asia, and Silat/Muay Thai was my first window and exposure to combat arts. Fast forward to 2024, I am mostly doing silat/escrima, which I am glad I started years ago, as it is harder to do Muay Thai as a 62-year-old. Thanks for the validation of Silat.

If I were in that situation, I’d rather know silat than judo or jujitsu because those arts weren’t tailored to that scenario. And yeah, I wish there were more places that taught it too.

Pencak Silat Cimande style is origin from west Java, Indonesia. Abah Kahir is the inventor of that style about 1169 AC. Sundanese people learn it to defend their selves and as art of life. That's style is the oldest one. Actually it's hard to master it😢
I studied a sealant style called Pukulan Garuda in the 80s. It was a very interesting fighting style and I liked all the weapons

Silat was shown in small quantities in the likes of "Black belt Magazine" and "Kung Fu Magazine" in the late '80s early '90s and always seemed like a fascinating system.
It wasn't until Iko Uais in "The Raid" that Silat became more globally displayed and recognised, but I also discovered a unique system of Silat as practiced, taught, and demonstrated by Australian Luke Holloway. The system Luke shows seems direct and effective in the empty hand arena, and his knife boxing is superb.❤😊

The first article on Silat in the USA was in the June 1965 issue of Black Belt. Magazine. There were several articles published throughout the 1970's it didn't just appear in the late 1980's it has a long but though not well known history in the United States.
Its Don Draeger from Black Belt Magazine who bring Silat to the world in early 70's.
Several decades before, in Dutch colonial era, Silat is much more shrouded and practised underground (and disguised as an artistic/dance style). As the dutch saw it as a dangerous weapon for local resistence & their guerilla warfare system (as similar as happen in Phillipine with their kali/escrima under spanish colonial rule.)
The most effective concepts are typically not shared with the public.

as an indonesian, i would say that keris dagger is more often used for a dark magical ritual by shamans (may they be damned) than a close-combat-poisoning fightings. but occasionally, it also used for a wedding ceremonial, yet also to show someone’s status back then (such a kings, sultans, or known figures)
true. most of shaman who practiced black magic, they use keris/kriss dagger for ritual purposes in Nusantara area region (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and South Filiphines or Southern Thai)

i'm from indonesian and yes, there's a lesson for that. Because it's often in training we have dislocated and broken bones, and in the past, there's no doctor so we learned how to heal it fast
In actual Silat practitioner, besides learning on how to fight, we learn how to heal ourselves. Its a package. I am not sure about how other silat guru teaches.

Silek Harimau, (West Sumatra) began to appear in 1129 and was first taught by Datuk Suri Dirajo as a martial art for soldiers of the kingdoms in West Sumatra at that time and is still taught today. This silat was originally intended for royal families and nobles. The typical and legendary weapon of this silat is the Kerambit
Brutal is the right word to describe how martial arts were used to repel invaders in our ancestral lands. Not comparable when facing opponents who use long-barreled weapons or steel armor. but we have guerrillas. it looks like a ninja, but it's actually more than that. when ninjas became extinct facing their peak rivals, but in fact silat still exists today.

The video was very interesting and one can clearly see the typical fluidity of motion in your silat guru that only high level practitioners of their respective system typically reach. But after all there are too many aspects that I think would likely not stand the test of a truly aggressive and violent opponent (the goal to intentionally engage in short range fighting with long range weapons, blade blocking behind back, etc.)

I met an interesting Silat player from Portland once , around the time they were filming THE HUNTED , before they took out the Elwa dam . I feel so curious about it but it's super hard to find reliable materials to learn more from. I just received my first levels as "instructor in training" for Majapahit Silat + Inosanto Lacoste Kali and I'm super excited to dive deep in all the systems that South East Asia can offer.

FYI most malay families/households throughout the malay archipelago have keris in their homes. Often inherited through the generations.
The deadliest are often the smaller ones. Women back then used to wear the smallest keris in their braided/sanggul hair like decorations.

In sundanese silat of west java, theres a pair counterpart for silat (striking system) for ground system : its called Benjang, a traditional wrestling & grappling art.
Much like of the pairs of Boxing-BJJ and Wushu-Shuai Jiao.
In the early 18th century on the island of Java there was a mass movement against Dutch colonialism, by a group of people led by Sunan Kuning. This group had extraordinary silat skills that could destroy armed Dutch soldiers in dozens of bases on the island of Java. This made the Dutch Afraid and finally the Dutch decided to share the area of power with other groups who also had troops equipped with great "silat" skills. and that successfully ended the episode of the sunan kuning movement. After that the Dutch had extraordinary respect for the Sultanate on the island of Java. and chose to share power with them, because the Dutch did not want the previous thing to happen again

Muay thai is more simple on defending & striking for people to learn, but silat is brutal and more complex to learn because they're fully martial art rather than just self defense like muay thai. You learn catching, striking, grapling, etc. At same time for the efficiency of positioning in self defense.
For me muay thai is good for basic to learn self defense mindset. But getting expert you can choose for expanding your martial art mindset with silat. And for me the +poin of silat is catching & striking.

I used to train in San Soo. It's an amalgamation of various Chinese styles with some western ideas tossed into the stew.
So far in my over 4 decades here in earth the times it's come into play have been very few, with two altercations ending right away from a sweep dropping the guy onto the concrete.
The largest benefit was controlling the mind better to a faster motorcycle racer. Being able to meld to the machine was the biggest benefit of martial art training for me.
I tend to stay away from trouble as best I can out in the jungle.

In Indonesia, all fights will end in multiple attackers and often with weapons. you drag down your opponent to the ground fighting means you're a deadman.
Traditional silat and muay bhoram (muay thai as we know) are build us as fighters at battle field back at the day when kingdoms are everywhere at south east asia

Love Silat, have been training SBL under Alvin Guinanao, we focus a lot on ground mobility. Being able to strike and move from the ground and from bizarre positions is quite deceptive, and cool. Additionally how quickly one can adapt the motions to weapons is fascinating.

Probably the most effective for street applications. It is a fighting system that stayed alive until the 70’s where people were clan fighting and defending their village using these arts. Not many fighting system can say they were still being used irl 50 years ago or less. Very different in concept than sports fighting. Also something clear from the demos even if not openly stated is the notion of multiple attacker is ingrained in the practice, something completely lost in sport like bjj and mma. Great video again !

@@inside_fighting depending on the reason one trains, this is an important point to consider. Something that is effective and safe in a controlled environment or one-on-on situation can become a liability in a crowd.
When I worked as a bouncer, a coworker who was training bjj had to evict a drunk guy who was semi-passively resisting. As my coworker felt he was loosing his grip and the guy was about to escape him he reverted to his bjj training and got the guy in a rear naked chock as they fell to the ground, only to realize he was now under the drunk guy holding him in a chock hold with 4 of his friends standing around him. Bad spot to be in. Fortunately other members of the team saw the interaction and arrived on the scene to help him and calm down the situation.
My coworker quickly realized how training only bjj, although developing certain useful skills, also developed habits that became liabilities in his work environment. You don’t want to start tooling on the ground in a bar with broken glass all over the floor, or when chairs, tables, and people are falling around.

Silat is still used to kill, today. Yayan Ruhian is actually a silat guru for presidential security force. They still use silat to protect the president other than sidearms. So, you can bet that it is still as deadly as it was, and those people obviously know the secret system.

Great video I trained with Steven Benitez in Silat on a few courses in the UK he has what I feel is the full system and a great person but I defo would not not mess with him. He has video’s on you tube and is so knowledgeable
