  • Classic Tube Televisions are are great way to game if you are playing classic consoles such as an 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, NES, Genesis, SNES, or even a Nintendo 64. Right now, these TV sets are nearly given away, and they are not making any more. I recommend anyone who would like to get one for their retro gaming setup to pick one up now if they have not already.

Actually my zapper works with a plasma but the input lag makes it really weird and you have to wave the zapper around to get it to work but i think CRTs are better.

Putting the pros of image quality/cheap price aside, CRTs are worth having just because of the 0 input lag. You just can't go back after getting used to it.

Ukraine James I miss the days of 0 lag and instant moving games feel harder to some degree because of the lag now, timing jumps that I was used to for years so had timing down for sure screwed me up for a while.

    • @redavatar
      @redavatar 7 років тому +7

The whole input lag thing is old hat because it stems from back when LCD TVs had really slow response times. These days, that's not the case anymore with a decent LED TV easily reaching as low as 20ms. Another channel did some tests using CRT vs LED TV with a response time app and there was no noticeable difference. Basically, lag is no longer the problem. What IS a problem, is light gun games not working as well as pixels being far too sharp and defined. CRT TVs are great at softening edges which made these low-rez games look a lot better than they do on an LCD monitor.

    • @cheeneybop

I totally agree on all counts. The CRT TV in my retro gaming center is a 20" Sony WEGA Trinitron from 2006, which I think was one of the last years that Sony still produced CRTs. I play everything from Atari 2600 and NES up to PS1 and GameCube on it and they all look vastly better on the CRT than they do on modern LCD/LED TVs, there's just no comparison. Being able to play light gun games is great too!

The only CRT you should ever look for these days for the best picture is no other than a SD Sony Trinitron. Preferably you want the cylinder shaped Trinitron, not the completely flat one since you can have horizontal picture linearity issues with completely flat tubes. I just scored a 35 inch SD Trinitron for 10 bucks with the stand! The TV weighs about 350 lbs but it was worth the struggle to move it as it has a stunning picture. It's weight is also the reason why it was so cheap. Trinitron TVs are twice as heavy than regular shadow mask TVs and people are willing to unload them cheap just to have someone strong enough to move them out of their house. Ofcourse you don't need to get a 35 like I did. A 32 or even 27 inch will serve you well. I don't recommend picking up a TV from the 70's or 80's as their pictures are way more likely to be dim due to wear compared to a late 90's or early 2000's TV.
The best reasons to have a CRT for 6th generation consoles and down are that not only do they look their best because CRTs don't have to process the image like flat panels do, but also because there is absolutely no input lag which can destroy the gameplay of many old school games depending on how bad the lag is. Also all your lightgun games will work on a SD CRT. Hopefully flat panel TVs will continue to get better with picture processing and have minimal to no input lag in the future. Until then a SD CRT is the best and cheapest way to play SD consoles, including the PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube.
About the prices going up, I'm not sure if I'm with you on that one. I actually thought that CRTs would have been going for much more by now but the demand is just no there. There are alot of gamers, even retro gamers that have accepted that LCD and other flat panel tech is the future. Everyone wants space and a streamlined look. CRTs are neither spacious or aesthetically pleasing to most. This is coming from someone who has a 34 inch Sony HD CRT, 35 inch Sony SD CRT, and a backup 27 inch Sony SD CRT in his gameroom. Upstairs I also have a 32 inch Phillips. I just replaced my CRT computer monitor with a LCD about 2 months ago just so I could have a bigger picture. Sooner or later time will catch up to all of us and CRTs will be no more, so the lesson here is:
PLAY YOUR GAMES!!! Don't just sit there and look at them on the shelf!

Best CRT to get is an Hitachi 32- or 36UDX10SA. It's 4:3, 1080i, has every port imaginable, even a VGA port, and traditional curved screen. Puts a Trinitron to shame, but are extremely difficult to locate.

Mealyman 94 Nope. If you're playing retro games you DO NOT want a HDTV even if it's a CRT. Why? Because HDCRTs are not compatible with retro light gun games. That is the very reason why I have a 35 inch SD Trinitron on one side of my room and a 34 inch widescreen HDCRT on the other side.

I recently came back into possession of a 1983-model JCPenney 12" CRT television from my mother that we got when I was six years old (I just turned 40), and I have to say, it still freaking looks _GREAT_ (it has a glassed-over front screen, just like the Magnavox TV in your video), and I'm absolutely amazed that it's still operating after all these decades. They just don't make 'em like they used to, any more. I hooked up a PS2 to check the image-quality, and I was blown away.

My primary unit for most of my consoles is a 2006 Sony Triton Sd.

Awesome video John. I just picked up a 32" Sony Trinitron today for $25. Hooked up my Super Nintendo, N64, and GameCube through S-video and it looks amazing. Only downside is it weights 170 lbs I think. I know you said that one should opt for a smaller crt due to weight, but I just get wowed every time I see a bigger crt with retro games on it. Took 3 big guys to carry this beast. That and I don't have the greatest eyesight so sometimes the smaller one cause me eye strain. Great video man :)

Great video JH. I totally agree, the price is only going to go up and they are already getting harder to find. I picked up a Sony BVM a few months back from a video production company down the road that was getting rid of all their old monitors. The 240p output to the production and broadcast monitors looks absolutely mint, I'd definitely recommend a BVM/PVM or equivalent. They cost $6,000+ back in the day and now they can be picked up for about $50.

I think there's some good points you've made here. I was fortunate to buy a Tube tv when I worked at Walmart. In 2007 when I left the company they were phasing out their CRT TVs for Flat screen models. I paid $100 at the time but I'm glad I did, it's SD and 30 inches or so, it's basically the newest model of the TV before they stopped making them.I keep seeing some great prices at Goodwill too and am tempted to have multiple TVs. :)

But then one day I found my 27" Trinitron on the street. I was actually a bit disappointed 'cause it was a flat screen and I wanted a more classic curved tube - but I think it's a really great set, I'm really happy to have it.

I completely agree, now is a great time to get a CRT. I see really good CRT TV's on Craigslist for free all the time, and the local thrift stores are flooded with them.
Personally, I have a 24" flat screen Toshiba CRT from the early 2000's. Got it for $10 at a garage sale. It's got Coax, composite, s-video, and component hookups, so any pre-hdmi system gets hooked up to this guy. It looks great! Even VHS doesn't look half bad on it!
Another thing to consider is that these tv's are pretty much the same resolution at 36" as the are at 12". So the smaller the picture, the sharper the image will appear.
    Great video!

I have a 17" Sony from the mid 80s. I got it for free from a local sale group on Facebook. I always keep my eyes on local sale groups because you can get some amazing deals. A month or two ago I picked up a pretty nice 4 slot Neo Geo MVS cabinet with 54 MVS/AES carts for about $300 after I had the cabinet serviced. I found out about a liquidation sale for an old grocery market here in town and went and checked it out seen the machine sitting there offered them $150 for it. Replaced some of the control switches and the screen and now I've got a MVS sitting in my game room. Yard sales, garage sales, and other local sales are great places for finding awesome stuff.

HD Sony Trinitron don't do 240p really well. They usually do worse than LCDs.
For anything lower than PS2 you'll need a SD television.

I used to pick up tractor trailer loads of trinitrons from a Sony distribution centre. Yeah .. hand bombing those 36 and 40" sets when delivering them to retailers wasn't fun. They were stacked 3 high so you had to sacrifice the first top one by inching it out enough until its weight was on my chest and sliding it down as low as I could and having to let it drop the last two feet. This tv was now a step for the rest of the stack. I only ever had one get smashed when a stack of four 27" fell over. What a shame.

I managed to snag a a giant 32 inch or so JVC CRT TV for free from Facebook when someone in my local Facebook page asked where to recycle it. It's not a flat screen, but it's still fantastic. Anything with AV, Component, S-Video, and Coax goes right in to it. Only thing is it didn't come with a remote. Luckily the face buttons do everything I need them to.

I have a number of CRTs, been picking them up for years. A NEC monitor style 9", a Panasonic 9" with built in VCR, a 32" Toshiba, a 26" Philips widescreen, a 13" Samsung, & about 3 20" of various other makes ( I know one is a Zenith from the early 80's), there is a 27" too I think. None of them are currently hooked up since I don't have a game room anymore at the moment but they're all ready & waiting.

I have two CRT televisions, however the best both support is composite video input. I've always though that from the NES on, composite signals just don't do the consoles justice, and so have been looking for something that supports svideo and/or SCART. Especially when you see captured footage using these, it's just brilliant and IMO a great way to give new life and nostalgia at the same time.

I have a 27 inch with S-video for my classic systems. It's some off brand, but it looks great. I had an HD CRT, but I lost it in my divorce....a bitter disappointment. Another couple of things worth mentioning: CRTs won't have lag that's caused by the upscaling and other processing that happens when you plug a classic console into a modern HDTV. You can use light guns with them. And also, you touched on how good they look, and it's the imperfect way that they display the image that gives kind of a natural anti-aliasing effect that makes old games look better than they do when you see them pixel perfect on a modern TV. Anyways, good video.

I have a 32" Sharp 32R-S50 that I got for free with the remote a few years ago. I use it for my NES on up to my Sixth Generation consoles and I love it! I wouldn't downgrade the size myself, retro games deserve to be displayed on as big of a screen as possible. :)

I really thought about getting a tube tv for my PS1,2 and NES, SNES, N64 systems. Currently I have the N64 (AV) and PS2 (component) hooked up to a 47" LG HDTV and I am pleasantly suprised how well it looks. No need for an HDMI converter for me. I'm not ruling out an early 2000s sony WEGA tube if I come across one though!

It is primarily that CRTs never have display lag. Also, most light gun controllers relied on the cathode ray timing, so the CRT type monitors are necessary for them.

The score is like cut in half? on Ghouls and ghosts on genesis and gradius 3 on snes for example, my tv you cant adjust picture much but if i play in 16:9 ratio its fine. Any ideas why this happens?

I picked up a CRT last year from the salvation army for $19.99 because I was itching to play Duck Hunt, Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, and House of the Dead 2 and it is wonderful. 19 inch flat screen Daewoo with component and s-video ports. My Genesis and SNES look AMAZING on it with the component HD Retrovision cables. I believe Part the NES punk has the same CRT in the background of his podcast videos.
Edit: Just remembered that I posted a picture of it on my Instagram: instagram.com/p/BKDgdqfD8K5/ running Sonic through the component ports.

I got a Daewoo DC (2006?) with built-in DVD player from a department store that was closing down. Sound is so-so and the picture distorts a bit if the brightness is set too high, but it was cheap and picture quality is very good. And a random forum told me how to make the DVD multi-region. Next plan is to get an RGB scart cable for my Gamecube, which will cost 3x what I paid for the TV!

Hey John! Love the video. I completely agree that a tube TV is essential for any retro gamer. Those old consoles were designed for the TV's of the day. Plus now a lot of people are just throwing them away. I absolutely love the CRT and it saddens me to see them go way of the buffalo. I have 2 CRT's for my collection: a 20" Sony Vega for my NES, SNES, Genesis and a really nice find on Craigslist: 34" Sony XBR Widescreen CRT (paid $75). I bought that to play music/rhythm games with. Mainly because the tv has no lag issues. I liked your comment about being stuck with a huge CRT. My mom said the same thing to me when I told her I was buying one, but it's fucking awesome so I don't care!
